We're back on by a lake, back with the swans, but instead of the ID.4, this time Robert's taking out the hotly anticipated Skoda Enyaq iV for a drive.
Skoda's first purpose built, all-electric vehicle is spacious, comfortable, nicely designed and has a good range. But here's the question - why would you choose this over the VW ID.4 which is built on exactly the same MEB drive train, has pretty much the same range and efficiency but comes in cheaper than the Skoda?
However, if you like proper big, beefy cars then the Skoda Enyaq iV could be the EV for you. Sadly, though we don't think it will be featuring on Robert's EV Christmas list, not this year anyway.

1 kWh smaller battery, but better aerodynamics lead to an overall loss of range !
Did you miss the umbrella in the door and the ice scratcher in the trunk door ?
Great design and not so strange curvy like the ID.4 - and a lot more extras for the base line model Enyaq 50.
Also the interior has a better look and feel than ID.3 and ID.4
Unfortunatelly totally overpriced compared to the US prices of the ID.4 where they offer them for 30% less than in Europe.

2:33 - Škoda cars were never made in Plzeň (Pilsen), but Mladá Boleslav (some even in Vrchlabí/Kvasiny). Only Škoda buses/trams/trains were (and are) made in Plzeň.
The original company that was founded in 1895 was named Laurin & Klement. It started off with bicycles, later it made motorcycles and since 1905, it has been making cars. In 1925, there was a fire at the production facility in Mladá Boleslav and Laurin & Klement had to be bought up by another company, and that was a company from Plzeň named Škoda.
In 1991, the VW Group bought up the car division of Škoda and since then, the car company is named ''Škoda Auto'', with Plzeň's ''Škoda'' being a separate company with a very similar logo.

Thanks Evolt, at last, someone who knows what he /she is talking about. That is why the MB1100 was called such, Mlada Boleslav, not "Motor in the Back"!! In fact my Grandmother visited the Skoda tank works with Lenin when it was taken over by Russia. The Czechs were certainly the greatest engineers/electricians in the AustroHungarian Empire.
Having owned an original Octavia, which enabled a Czech family to "escape" to Belgium. UMG 43B, apparently it ended up back in Praha. So, if someone knows the whereabouts of a 2 tone, white/red Octavia with Maserati airhorns, please let me know for a finders reward.
I actually entered CS from Linz during the Russian invasion in my right hand drive Skoda complete with Dubcek/Svoboda posters. Ended up in a camp site at Ceske Budejevice & passed many Russian tanks, Panzerbrat, on my way to Hradcanie Castle to help hide all the works of art from the Russkis.

Robert, when comparing the Enyaq 80X to the Ioniq 6 LR AWD, using the EV Database, the range on the Ioniq is only 5km more. And the Skoda has 40l more boot space. That loss of range is a small price to pay if you need the space if a larger vehicle.
And when you compare the price of these 2, the Ioniq is £8000 MORE.

But the one in this video is fully optioned and costs £52,000 so it is significantly more than the Ioniq 5 which basically has no options other than colour. The extra 40 litres of boot space is not much and the Ioniq 5 can charge at 220kWh which makes up for the slightly lower range.

Blessed fully charged but they've missed the point with the Skoda. If you start from a base loft or lodge 60, it's under £35k and still qualifies for the government grant of £2.5k. you can then add the specific add ons you want and it'll probably be a very big and affordable SUV.
Concentrating on the fully specced one is down the wrong path of this great offering from Skoda.

Reviewers don't usually get a choice in what model they are given, and even where there is a choice at the venue, they may not be able to get hold of a certain car when in competition with other reviewers/time constraints, etc. Manufacturers will also obviously tend to provide their top-of-the-range models to make the best impression on journalists. I very much doubt Robert had any choice in car here.

I’m going to have to agree with others, the comparison to similar vehicles at the end isn’t really fair, especially when you consider the other batter sizes available, an Enyaq 60 vs Ioniq 5 is 195m range at £31995 vs 205m range at £37000. I need to consider the whole package with my next purchase, range, towing, space and most importantly price! To say the other models are competing on price is misleading!

My first ever car I bought was a 2006 Skoda Octavia vRS Estate (still have it) 4 years ago (and I'm just over 40). Have driven family or company cars up until then. I went with Skoda because of the boot space (and secretly because it is bit of a Sleeper Car and faster than you think) - most people don't realise is that the Octavia has a much larger boot/trunk than most of its competitors (in larger vehicle size brackets I might add). Plus, lots of rear legroom etc and the small design touches that I like and are well thought out. No surprise that the Octavia and Superb are fairly popular with Minicab drivers given their size inside. But, I'd like to get an electric car next, or at least a Hybrid as a stepping stone. The new Hybrid Octavia vRS is very tempting (great performance), but I quite like the look of the Enyaq and great to see their foray into the Electric car market - a good start I say. A first generation model won't be as polished as some of its competitors, who are already putting out their 2nd or 3rd generation electric vehicles, but you need to start somewhere. The size of the boot and internal space of the Enyaq would be huge pro points for me once I go 'down this road' in the future.

Robert, I have enjoyed watching videos from this channel in prep for buying my own ev for family use and was encouraged by your review of the VW IV4 as you seemed really excited about it. Given that this has the same platform I was a bit deflated by your non-enthusiasm. As a teacher with a family wanting to buy a versatile family car my options are limited by what I can pay. In this review you compared this to the VW and the Hyundai and said they were both less expensive - but you failed to mention that this was comparing this fully speced car to pretty much their floor price. Family’s such as my own may be off put as a result when the reality is you can buy one for nearly £10000 less than either of the cars you compared it with. You can also up the specs as they are not counted in the ceiling for ev grants. I think this review would have been more helpful if you had given it more of a family car focus with awareness of family budgets.

Surprised that the review wasn’t more positive, for one of the year’s biggest EV releases! I suspect the £50k odd value of the model tested clouded the overall view, when you can perfectly spec an 80 with heat pump, leather and fast-charging for around £42-43k. The Enyaq’s more competitive at that price.

Thanks for the quick review! Will you do an in depth review of this car as well at some point?
    Two things really suprised me:
    1) Is the Enyaq really advertised with 150 kW DC charging in the UK? Because so far, everywhere else is just stating 125 kW with an OTA update option for more later on.
    2) It's rather interesting to see that Skoda UK had to price this car so unbelievably high. In Germany, for example, the Enyaq is actually a bit cheaper than the ID.4 and certainly cheaper than Nissan Arya, Ioniq 5 and the likes - and this is also the appeal of the whole brand. Reliable, clever details, but cheaper than VW for roughly the same car. It would be very interesting to know why that pricing changed so much for the UK.

This is one of the few cars that has the potential to be practical for my requirements. I wish our Federal Government weren't such luddites and showed some leadership in Climate Change in general and electric cars in particular because right now they are discouraging the auto companies to release these electric cars in Australia.

I've driven Skōdas for years now. Love 'em for their practicality and sturdy reliability and the fact that you get so much more room to the £. Don't care about top speed or 0 to 60 just need it to fit the two of us and the dog, some luggage and my fold up electric bike! Plus be able to shift the odd wardrobe when necessary! This is on my wish list for when the day comes that we can afford a new car. However I think brand loyalty might have to take a back seat if they're really playing silly buggers with their pricing... They are quite famous for advertising the top spec and then charging an arm and a leg for the "extras" but it looks like they might have outdone themselves this time!
Having said that I did see a review the other day that said you still get the govt grant if the car you choose starts at below £35.000 even if you add on extras. The '60' is below the threshold so if you take the Loft edition and add the heat pump for example which will take you over you still get the benefit so might not be so bad after all. Need to check out the space in the Nissan though....
Thanks for a great review, you gave us something useful that others haven't mentioned and that was the satnav showing the charging network, well spotted, really helpful to know that.

Hmmm, not one of this channel's better reviews and am pretty sure some of the statements were a little inaccurate. Personally, I love the design inside and out and find it way way more appealing than the ID4. This is a very cool car.

I’m sorry but the Enyaq is not able to charge at 150kW DC and only the smaller battery (the 50) has a 7,2 kW charger.
The videos from FC are getting quite shiny but with no real information at all, they are like a prospect from the car brand.

Mind you it is also refreshing and entertaining to watch Robert struggle to get to grips with car tech!

I can recommend autogefuehl who do the most detailed reviews of cars , while Fully Charged are great for cars in context to the bigger EV / Green / transition. Bobby is an excellent emotional reviewer of cars, and how they make him feel, which is also important with cars.

This video feels very fast and loose with comparative specs to alternative cars which gives an overall impression the Skoda is vastly overpriced and woefully inefficient. Which is misleading. This is basically identical to the VW ID4 but with alternative styling, lower price and much higher starting spec and stats. Just like the difference between Skoda superb and a VW Passat. In that context, it is arguably much more competitive than an ID4. When throwing stats around, it does not help if like is not being compared to like and undermines the rest of the review.

Strictly speaking, Skoda's first ground up EV was a 1939 beer delivery truck, it had a bank of lead acid batteries.
They, like Mercedes and others had experimented with wood burning powered, or petrol generator, combinations for a while.
If you've never driven a Skoka before, perhaps go have a look at an Octavia or Superb, even if it is the PHEV versions, I don't think I saw a single thing mentioned that makes this different to a VW, which is not that surprising when this is not a car review channel. IE, the Umbrellas in the door, the parking pass holder built in, load covers that fit under the boot floor, an ice scraper built into a fuel filler cap (typically), in this case, built into the door lid next to the Enyaq logo. All which gives the "Simply Clever" branding meaning.

  • @amipal24
    @amipal24 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I've been waiting for the Enyaq reviews, as it is top of my list for my first EV. As others have mentioned, the price comparison isn't quite right - no way would an Ioniq 5 be cheaper than you can get the Skoda for.
As for the ID.4 vs. Enyaq debate, the interior is what clinches it for me. The ID.4's is too cheap for a car at that price point, same as they've done with the ID.3, and neither of the VWs have interior upgrade options which fix that.
Also, the ID.4 is simply more practical than the ID.4 - the boot space is astonishing, and would definitely be a direct replacement for my 2016 Sportafe.

We are almost there... I think 3-5 more years and the batteries might be efficient enough for North America. When I visit my Grandmother is is 450km. Which mean the trip takes an extra 30-40 minutes in a EV Growing up in Northern Ontario we regular drove 800-900km sometimes more to visit family. For that a stop or two for 30-40 minutes isn't a big deal. But in a 4.5-5 hours trip a 3-4 minutes tack on is a bit much... If they can get a 500km real world range I think more people would be good with it. Enough to get a reasonable distance and get to your hotel charge up or take a rest stop and charge up... and be ready.
200-400km ranges is good as a local car that isn't going on a journey. But as a primary vehicle I think 500km is the sweet spot.

Not at the top of the list but why?
It's too big? No, it's almost exactly as big as the ID4.
It's too expensive? No, it's cheaper than the ID4, the Ioniq 5 and the Ev6.
It's doesn't have the range? No, that is identical to the ID4 according to EV Database.
Don't like the interior? If not, what is wrong with it? You didn't say.
Is it just the exterior styling?
I have looked very hard at this car as I am (still) planning to buy one. I can't find much to complain about tbh.

Poor coverage of the car , the base model iV60 is £34000 and with the grant it`s £31500 and you get leather interior with that, 200+ miles , driving assistance and emergency braking systems. At that price it is a lot of a car for that money considering towing , boot space and general interior comfort.

    • @JohnPadgett
      @JohnPadgett 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @dyyd0

Loft interior is not leather. It has some elements of fake leather. And to tow you need to pay for the hook etc so the price does quickly creep up. Also many of the driver assistance features are not included in the base trim I think.

    • @redbooll21

Hum. It is at the tippy top of my list: I like the space, I like the drivetrain, I like the interior very much.
Will I buy it over the Hyundai Ioniq 5? Now THERE is a question. I appreciate the the interior effort in that but less impressed by the materials, based on videos I've seen. Also less interior space. But I love the exterior, I love the drivetrain more, I love how they've really thought it through.
Only thing to do is test drive them both!

  • @ThorRavnsborg

So many great EV's coming now. Currently the Enyak and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 are my favorites on the European market. I love the interior of the Enyak and exterior of the Ioniq 5 which makes it hard to choose. I think the Hyundai might have the edge for me since the exterior of the Enyak is not my cup of tea but it's wonderful to finally have a selection of really good options in this class. And let's not forget Model Y and a number of exciting models coming from China too.
