The Ghost House of Sussex: £40million mansion is still being built by property baron and friend of Robert Mugabe 31 Years after work first began.
Nicholas Van Hoogstraten began the construction of Hamilton Palace in 1985 but work appears to have now ceased.
The British property baron's half-built home has now been nicknamed the Ghost House of Sussex by local residents.
Now living in Zimbabwe, Hoogstraten is an associate of Robert Mugabe and has invested millions in the country.
Stretched between rows of ancient trees and sprawling over green fields, this is the so-called Ghost House of Sussex - a massive £40million mansion left incomplete after work first began in the 1980s.
Property baron Nicholas Van Hoogstraten, who began the construction of Hamilton Palace, near Uckfield in East Sussex in 1985, has long since left British shores to further his business interests in Zimbabwe.
The controversial businessman, who was once jailed for paying thugs to hurl a grenade into a rival's home, started building the home - complete with its own mausoleum - in order to house his vast art collection.

Whatever one thinks of it's owner, this sure is one hell of a property! One of the largest properties in Britain. I wonder whether the building will ever be completed. Great video, with a good supporting Hans Zimmer track, thanks for sharing.

It was never finished in the first place. Started in 1985, and still not finishes, or even being worked on, it's a folly and a mere shadow of what it could have been if it had been done properly. .
Probably will never be completed and used to write off company expenses. Lovely structure

It's rather ugly and how big does a house need to be. Don't get me wrong I love a good old stately home but christ this one is a monster and an ugly one at that.

@@saber_life So, I wonder where the beauty in smallpox was to be found? The place was conceived by an odious individual, which is not, in itself, a bar to artistic merit. However, in this case, this edifice is just a concrete monstrosity, which sits badly in the landscape, and we are even denied the prospect of it being a romantic ruin.

I live in a one bed, with 5kids and hubby, it's sad that there's so many homeless people out there, or over crowded yet places like this is jus sitting empty

The owner pays for the education of 100s of impoverished south African children, he doesn't want British homeless living here, that's his choice, no more so than the royal family want homeless in any of their dozens of unused mansions and houses they own.
It's pretty obvious they'd end up vandalised, destroyed or set fire to.
I've work in building renovations and came across places that had been boarded up, but broken into and used by the homeless, what should have been simply redecorating, turned into a major building project, plaster smashed off walls, doors torn off hinges, human excrement on the floors.
Copper piping ripped up along with flooring and sold for scrap I presume.
One place an 80 bedroom ex hotel that was fully operational, complete with indoor pool, sauna and everything, was sold as a viable business, by the time the new owners took over, just 4 months later it was so badly damaged, it was bulldozed and a 8 million pound insurance claim was made
Am i the only one who thinks this is an awful monstrosity? The setting is beautiful but the building is awful.
A crass looking foley. The size of the building is out of sync with its surrounding land, being the land is small whereas a stately palace would have dozens of acres. Mr Hoogstraten has poor taste and little architectural foresight though he is good at making money through intimidation of his out of luck clients.
The architectural style is too jumbled and lacking in proportions. The tiny domes look ridiculous on a building that big. If they stuck to the neo-Georgian style of the main block it might have been beautiful. Why do billionaires always have such bad taste?

The Mugabes new that once the deal is unearthed he will loose the property any. That's why it was abandoned in early 2000s during the British led sanctions against Mugabe and ZANU PF

Why people like me work hard and buy our own homes! Why just because people are to lazy to get a job they should get a house? This nice home would be full of druggies and single mothers if it was turned into a council home

You dont have to be a smackhead or single mother (I dont quite know why they've been vilified) to not be able to afford to buy a house anymore. In the past the state helped address this problem by building council homes which meant people could pay more affordable rent. The safety net of the government is important and requires people to pay taxes to help. One day you might need an expensive medical operation. Some people will take your stance and say: 'I'm hard working and looked after my health why should I pay for some fat smoker to live longer?' That's the point of taxes people pay for things that will improve the wider society. Or you could keep all your money and buy another car or another tv that you will never use.

Why it was abandoned?
It's not abandoned,its belongs to a UK property millionaire and the police as well as government officials have always had it in for him.
When they realised there is no other way to get to him they just legally forced him to stop construction.
I just look at this and ask myself why would any business man or entrepreneur want to live in England?

I can't see how this can be Hamilton palace considering the real thing was way bigger than this and was demolished over a century ago
You realise that this is a completely different place in Uckfield, Sussex England and nothing to do with the demolished building of the same name that previously stood in Scotland.
