      *If generation tech actually did any research on how EVIL Samurai were,* he would know samurai in the Warring States (Sengoku) period were taxing people to fund their pointless wars. In the "peaceful" Edo period after, they were pure evil enforcers quelling the population from uprising due to heavy taxes. *Under the Samurai oppression, every year 1/3 of the Japanese mothers had to kill their own babies in a ritual called MABIKI.* Google it. It became so commonplace until they didn't even feel bad about it, and rationalized it as "killing a baby is not murder, they are not full human beings, so it is merely returning babies to ghostly spirits." In the 300 years of the Edo Period, the Japanese population increase rate was close to 0 because of such heavy taxation. The "peaceful" taxation of the people was because Japan didn't have a strong enough central government system, and let feudal lords set tax rates however they wanted.
      But at the same time, the central Shogun wanted to prevent lords from amassing private armies again like in the previous Warrings States period, so he heavily taxed the lords. The lords of course just raised taxes of the people to make up for lost money. To quell dissent, Kirisute Gomen was given: the license for samurai to kill peasants under whatever perceived slights. Still in the 300 year "peaceful" Edo period, over 7000 local revolts happened when peasants were backed into straight up starvation, and 100s of Uchikowashi which is a whole peasant town raiding a rich samurai or merchant's home and raping the family and tearing down everything and stealing all their stuff. For centuries, in Asia, Japanese were known to be short people because of their general malnutrition.
      Samurai were so hated, that samurai never let themselves go into alleys in cities because peasants would be waiting to swarm them and kill them.
      Ofc, this is nothing compared to what Okinawans had to do from Japanese raids and taxes. Think Viking taxation of the English but 10 times worse. Records say just to decrease census and being taxed by headcount, they pushed pregnant women off cliffs, and bashed babies onto rocks when it was around time for samurais to threaten Okinawans to pay up. The Ainu natives on the mainland were killed and the survivors forced to pay even more taxes than the general Japanese colonizers. They fled to the cold northlands of Hokkaido, but in the 19th century Japan properly invaded and took over Hokkaido and Okinawa anyway. Pockets of Ainu live on in Hokkaido or in Russian Kuril Islands, fleeing from brutal persecution.
      Jedi are more like Shaolin Monks, who ACTUALLY meditate as part of their life, and as Buddhists, they are forbidden to kill living creatures, even to the point that some sects don't eat meat. They aren't part of anyone's government either, and from time to time they did spread influence independent of the government and the government outsourced a few projects to them.
      Plus, they also were more acrobatic with their martial arts and wore robes. Samurai wear expensive armor paid with the taxes of the overburdened peasants and NEVER jump around. Monks would never commit suicide, Samurai commited harakiri to uphold their lord's honor and in exchange for killing himself his family got heaviliy rewarded to encourage the samurai to go through with it, and this made the lord look like an awesome person who had men willing to die for him at his beck and call.

      A slug thrower would have been better, actually. Lightsabers don't work on bullets, and Grievous couldn't stop them with the Force. He'd have been dead long before ROTS if they'd done that.

      James LeDuke lightsabers kinda work on slugs, if blocked you won’t get hit by the slug proper, but get showed in liquid slag. But Grievous was mostly covered in armor so he could probably ignore it. What you need is to fight him with something forged with Cortoris.

      @@crowsenpai5625 It may _possibly_ melt the slug. While the general consensus is lightsabers are focused plasma blades, we're not 100% sure of the full mechanics. Considering the speed at which bullets travel, and depending on the material they're made of, it's possible they might not melt (or not entirely) and could hit the lightsaber holder mostly unimpeded.
      There's also the possibility of the slug travels too fast for the force user to react in time. Our bullets travel over 100X faster than blaster fire, and they aren't actually easily visible to the untrained naked eye.
      I think the best material to use in a projectile against a lightsaber wielder would be some kind of alloy consisting of Cortosis and a (relatively) strong metal. The Cortosis could potentially cause their lightsaber to short out for a bit and allow other attacks through their normal defense even if the initial attack was avoided.

      @@jamesleduke873 Lightsabers do work on slugthrowers, they just get overpowered easily, and only throw back liquid bullets that don’t go far. However, I’m not sure that Grievous’s armor could be breached by a slugthrower.

    As someone who has done a lot of fencing in his life, I would like to add that when a "bullet" leaves a gun, there is no real connection to the target. In fencing,when you best your opponent "run him through, cut him down" you are for a brief moment connected to the other end of that weapon as they are cut down. It can be a very personal moment when you know beyond any doubt, that YOU are the person that took them down.

      As someone who's had to open fire on another human being trying to kill me, it's not so simple to put a living thing in your sights and apply five or more pounds of pressure to the trigger knowing once you pull said trigger, the sear, hammer/ striker drops, there's no turning back, even if your life depended on it. Once you see that bullet hits its target you know beyond all doubt you spilt that guy's guts and destroyed parts of his vital organs and very good possibility of killing him if not killed outright. It's not any easier even if the guy deserved it or if it was self-defense or defense of innocent third parties and it was you/innocents or them.
      Even in war it's not so easy to shoot someone, even if they are the enemy and he's trying to kill you.

      Gentlemen? I suspect my soon to be ex has been using my account to cause drama. Firstly, I am a woman, so I wouldn't have said, "in his life". Secondly, I am a fencer, while he hasn't picked up a sword in almost a decade. He just likes to shoot his mouth off. Thirdly, while I am reasonably successful in my sport (18 years worth) I am smart enough not to bring a sword to a gunfight. While my skills may have been of some use 500 years ago, I'm certain there is a world of difference between a sport and actual combat. And should you be so ignorant as to assert that a woman cannot defeat a man in a sword fight, I can assure you that a great many women are perfectly capable of doing so. I could provide you with historical examples, but you don't strike me as the sort who would be interested in that sort of thing. I wish you well , but I have no interest in an argument that someone else caused.

    From what I put together, the concept was meant to be inspired from how a samurai cherishes and carries his sword. The elegance they describe of it is that you give that sword purpose, and treat it as a physical extension of yourself. Even when more efficient firearms were coming out you never saw samurai permanently exchange the sword for a rifle. This was Lucas's original inspirations of the jedi however when preparing the series. Just as you would know a samurai by his robe/armor and sword, you would know a jedi by his robe/armor and lightsaber. The other aspect of the reason they do not carry blasters is because of how soldiers and criminals carry them, they must stick to tradition and not be seen as a soldier but a peacekeeper.

In the "peaceful" Edo period after, they were pure evil enforcers quelling the population from uprising due to heavy taxes. *Under the Samurai oppression, every year 1/3 of the Japanese mothers had to kill their own babies in a ritual called MABIKI.* Google it. It became so commonplace until they didn't even feel bad about it, and rationalized it as "killing a baby is not murder, they are not full human beings, so it is merely returning babies to ghostly spirits." In the 300 years of the Edo Period, the Japanese population increase rate was close to 0 because of such heavy taxation. The "peaceful" taxation of the people was because Japan didn't have a strong enough central government system, and let feudal lords set tax rates however they wanted.
      But at the same time, the central Shogun wanted to prevent lords from amassing private armies again like in the previous Warrings States period, so he heavily taxed the lords. The lords of course just raised taxes of the people to make up for lost money. To quell dissent, Kirisute Gomen was given: the license for samurai to kill peasants under whatever perceived slights. Still in the 300 year "peaceful" Edo period, over 7000 local revolts happened when peasants were backed into straight up starvation, and 100s of Uchikowashi which is a whole peasant town raiding a rich samurai or merchant's home and raping the family and tearing down everything and stealing all their stuff. For centuries, in Asia, Japanese were known to be short people because of their general malnutrition.
      Samurai were so hated, that samurai never let themselves go into alleys in cities because peasants would be waiting to swarm them and kill them.
      Ofc, this is nothing compared to what Okinawans had to do from Japanese raids and taxes. Think Viking taxation of the English but 10 times worse. Records say just to decrease census and being taxed by headcount, they pushed pregnant women off cliffs, and bashed babies onto rocks when it was around time for samurais to threaten Okinawans to pay up. The Ainu natives on the mainland were killed and the survivors forced to pay even more taxes than the general Japanese colonizers. They fled to the cold northlands of Hokkaido, but in the 19th century Japan properly invaded and took over Hokkaido and Okinawa anyway. Pockets of Ainu live on in Hokkaido or in Russian Kuril Islands, fleeing from brutal persecution.
      Jedi are more like Shaolin Monks, who ACTUALLY meditate as part of their life, and as Buddhists, they are forbidden to kill living creatures, even to the point that some sects don't eat meat. They aren't part of anyone's government either, and from time to time they did spread influence independent of the government and the government outsourced a few projects to them.
      Plus, they also were more acrobatic with their martial arts and wore robes. Samurai wear expensive armor paid with the taxes of the overburdened peasants and NEVER jump around. Monks would never commit suicide, Samurai commited harakiri to uphold their lord's honor and in exchange for killing himself his family got heaviliy rewarded to encourage the samurai to go through with it, and this made the lord look like an awesome person who had men willing to die for him at his beck and call.

    Another good reason: like the Samurai class in the Edo period, maybe they are now carried specifically for dueling other force users - i.e. force users are a dueling culture.
    Hence why the Sith don't use blasters either despite being a violent Order - it is not only symbolic, defensive, stylistic, but also part of a ritualized system of honor/challenge.

    Strangely enough, in The Star Wars RPG revised edition, all Jedi classes start off with blaster proficiency.
    I think Jedi in general are trained how to use a multitude of weapons, just in case they're put in a position when they may need to use a different weapon

    I always thought that a jedi dual wielding a lightsaber in one hand and a blaster of some kind in the other would be pretty brutally effective against most opponents. It would definitely be more worthwhile to two-hand the lightsaber against certain opponents, like the more advanced droids or other force users, but against many opponents, it would easily improve their combat effectiveness, especially given training by those who have been able to use blasters effectively using nothing but the force to wield them.

      Gups not really if they simply had shields and turtle formation, which would’ve allowed them to endure the Jedi’s fire power whilst retaining the ability to shoot, whereas jedis would’ve had to chose between firing and defending themselves (for most of them). And Anakin could’ve acted as a tank, being able to parry many incoming lasers as well as closing the distance, forcing the other Jedi to draw their swords. It would’ve certainly made it more difficult though.

      Jon Umine well... I would say that considering they had a thousand years of peace and absolute dominance, you could tend to be a little more lenient on the defenses... But considering the Sith raid on Coruscant, and the fact that they were at war during more than 10-15 years prior to the temple slaughter, and the fact that there was a separatist attack on Coruscant mere month or so prior to said event, and the fact that they knew about the existence of the Sith resurgence since years, decades in fact, and the fact that they knew their connection with the force was clouded by a master of the dark arts, and the fact that they knew the senate was controlled by a Sith on Coruscant... yeah, they are indefensible, they should’ve had transformed their temple into a fortress.
      I mean, some droid sentinels, automated turrets, some people to tell everyone about dangers, and a security team wouldn’t have been too much to ask.
      I say « droids » because clones were better used on a battlefield, and apart from them, I can’t see anyone the Jedi would’ve wanted to be allowed in their temple 24/7.
      And some security protocols as well as a place to take refuge in in case the temple was attacked.
      Well... I guess that’s one more problem in SW we’ll have to ignore or to come up with a mildly forced explanation for ^^

      The clones that went too raid the temple were trained to overwhelm Jedi with numbers. Also most of the Knights and masters were away doing battle. Ask that was left were the guardians of the temple and Jedi trainees

    I’ve always found the excuse that the blade has no weight to be rather empty. The lightsaber makes a noise as it goes through the air. And as we clearly see the saber cuts through hard material by burning through it. So as it cuts through the air, it’s going to super heat the air, hence the hum of the air exploding. This will have a kickback. Thus the blade moving through the air will have a locating feedback.

    Against average non-force-using foes - Why carry your own blaster when your lightsaber can just as easily bounce the enemies shots back at them?
    Against other force-using foes like Sith - Why even try to shoot someone that can use their lightsaber to bounce your shots right back at you?

    You see a Lightsaber: You all open fire or Run
    If you're wielding a Lightsaber: Keep that thing off till u can get close and then ignite it. Makes u less of a target long range, and 7 get a scare factor when u ignite it 5 feet I front of a group of enemies.

      Mr. Llama that’s if you play like a dummy. Always approach in a flanking maneuver, then ignite, that way they don’t hear you until it’s too late and they are less likely to see you without a glowing death blade. If you don’t have the elements of surprise, ignite, play defensively and close the distance or just leave.

    So, are we going to be forgetting the stun setting on blasters? I understand that not all blasters had a stun setting, but you can just buy one with a stun setting. Then you don't have to worry about cutting off limbs, you just stun them.

      to be fair. He used it like a baton during the stormtrooper fight, and just a stick to block stuff during the kylo fight. Basically what you expect a normal soldier to use it as. If he got cocky and did some spins then yeah no more arms.

    The complete star wars encyclopedia also said that the lightsaber mirrors the jedi mentality, they are passive and would rather defend than attack, but that still doesn't explain why more jedi didn't use a concept similar to Ezra's lightsaber, a combination of a lightsaber and a low powered blaster

      immortalfrieza something like that if recall they could. I honestly liked the fact not all Jedi used exclusively lightsabers. Battle masters we’re just as good with swords and the independent Jedi sects are amazing as well. If I was a Jedi I’d use both a blaster and a lightsaber.

      That's no more valid an excuse for Luke's ability than for Rey's ability, and even if it was we didn't know what difference that made until Empire Strikes Back was over and STILL nobody had any issue with Luke being great at everything before then and still don't. Luke has 5 minutes with a lightsaber and no actual pilot's training and he's using the Force to blow up the Death Star. He then has a couple days worth of training at the most and he's matching Darth Vader blow for blow for most of their fight. At least Rey has the excuse of being a scavenger fighting for her life every day, Luke was just some farmboy with a relatively cozy life before A New Hope happened and he's shooting down scores of the Empire's best like he spent his childhood as an elite commando.
      Again, Luke did the exact same instant expert crap but nobody gave the crap then, it shouldn't be an issue now that Rey is doing it either. Hell, EVERY protagonist in all of fiction is an instant expert just like Rey and nobody gives a crap either.

      @@immortalfrieza That's what was shown ON-screen, what about whats off-screen? It was in legends(true canon) though I don't know which book. That Luke was on Dagobah for maybe 2-3 months before the cloud city incident. I don't know about the pilot training though. Luke has ACTUAL character development, unlike Rey. He had his hand cut off by his OWN father, then later after he does the same, Luke then resists the pull of the dark side. This is because Luke sees himself in Vader, and he does not want to BECOME like Vader. Luke had the motivation to fight against the Empire because(spoilers for a close to 20 year old movie), the killed the people who raised him. Rey however, has no motivation other than 'go with the flow', to fight the first order.

    You mentioned that the sabers have no weight but it seems now they do in canon, in an exchange between Kannan and Sabine she mentiones "It's heavier than i thought" and later kannan remarks that the blades are attracted to each other (like magnets or currents).

    This gave me an idea. Maybe the Jedi and Sith should have worked together as separate branches of one whole organization. The Jedi acting as the keepers of peace, balance, and order while the Sith acted as the more aggressive militant branch that's sent to destroy hostiles where the peace keepers that are the Jedi could not.
    The Jedi could use lightsabers as a symbol of their role as peace keepers while the Sith could have used blasters that were specially designed to use kyber crystals, like "Farkiller" or whatever it's called that was built by that one guy. The Sith could even have their own martial arts specifically designed around using their unique blasters, which could have bayonets or something attached or could be used in tandem with something like a high tech riot shield.

    "Why jedi didn't use blasters." Before even watching this video I can come up with a LOT of reasons. First, I will start with the practical reasons, and then I'll go into the moral of troops, and meaning of a lightsaber. First of all, a lightsaber can deflect blaster bolts, if you're running with a blaster unless you have some sort of shield, you can not deflect the bolts except with the force. And I imagine that it would take IMMENSE concentration to use the force to move the bolts out of your way, more so than deflecting the bolts with a lightsaber. Second of all, traditional armor and metals are designed to protect against blaster bolts, not a lightsaber. And that's not even mentioning the fact that a lightsaber can go much deeper through armor and flesh, and that brings me to my next point. Third of all, a lightsaber can melt through doors and tanks and stab through cover. Obviously, if you were to try this with a blaster, the cover would make the blaster useless and the blaster would have no effect on the tank, and unless the cover was thin enough, or the blaster was heavily powered, or both, it wouldn't be able to pierce through. Now, I would make these separate points, but they all relate to each other so it will be a really long point. Finally the lightsaber it self, a lightsaber makes a jedi stand out. Imagine these two scenarios, scenario A, you see a jedi running through the battlefield with a blaster and only robes as armor and he has to find cover like every other trooper in order to not waste his concentration to use the force to move the blasts and not get hit by a blaster. Now scenario B, you see a jedi running through the battlefield with a lightsaber, he deflects every shot back at his enemies charging through the battlefield, easily cutting through the armor and tanks of the opposition. Which scenario's jedi is more intimidating? And a jedi's lightsaber makes them stand out amongst troops and it rallys there allys, boosting the morale greatly. A good example of the jedi boosting the morale of troops is in OG SWBFII in the campaign, on the battle of kashyykk the morale soared from thinking that it was a suicide mission, to a winnable battle when master yoda arrived, and as stated, a lightsaber in the hands of a jedi is far more powerful than a blaster, the morale wouldn't be as great if they weren't using a more powerful weapon, and if they weren't using a weapon that makes them stand out like a lightsaber. That is one of the powers of a lightsaber, it boosts morale to the people who side with the jedi and it strikes fear into the hearts of the enemies of the jedi. A lightsaber is not a tool like a blaster, it is the call sign and symbol of a Jedi knight, a symbol of hope, peace, justice, freedom, protection, and a symbol of good. A jedi's blade is awe inspiring and it designates the jedi as peacekeepers of the galaxy. A lightsaber is a symbol, a blaster is not. A lightsaber is in a way, a symbol of the jedi philosophy, to not engage fights from a distance, but to defend yourself if necessary. A lightsaber is designed not to kill, but to protect. And THAT is why a jedi does not use a blaster, they wield a lightsaber not just for practical purposes, but because a lightsaber is more than a tool like a blaster, but it is a symbol of the jedi and their philosophy.
    Bonus point: Imagine how weird the lightsaber battles would be if they were gunfights.

      The most obvious reason, blasters can't shoot straight. You could be 10' in front of somebody and the blaster bolt would hit the ground or a hook right or left and not hit them.

    if you were wearing a sword during feudal times, in most society . it meant you were someone of status with the right to kill people as you sore fit with in the laws or sometimes above the law. its the same for the jedi. when you look at it from a certain point of view..

      No, it just meant that you probably lived outside of one of the cities. Gambesons and swords were fairly common, being used to defend yourself against whatever may be between your house and the closest market.

      @@danese1636, swords could be carried by almost anyone. It was a good self-defence tool, if you were able to use it properly. Thing is, people who could actually use the sword to great effect were either (ex-)military, guards/militia, and aristocrats (who traditionally received some martial training by default). Do you really think that all these armed guards or mercs were of noble blood? Majority of ordinary folks used axes, maces and clubs just because swords were more expensive and you won't be spending a big sum of money for something that isn't your tool of trade.

      I wish more Jedi carried weird sabers in the movies.
      Like with all the alien species they only have regular sabers and double bladed sabers. I know there's like a Pike lightsaber in the games but I feel like there should be cultural variants. Like what if some blue dude just pulled out a lightsaber Katar, or like a bow that fired mini sabers the jedi could retrieve with the force. Stuff like that.

    I like how much thought and effort you put into the reasons a fictional order of space wizards do stuff. I do the same thing. I have a theory that the reason for the WW2 naval style of space battle is because between tractor beams and jamming missiles are ineffective and you need line of sight turbo lasers.

      But I don't think it's imposible to lower the "Power" of it. A Jedi makes his own Lightsaber, and the Kyber Crystal itself can't do anything, is in how the Saber is made that gave it the "Burning" power. I belive it can be modfie to be less harmfull.
      And about the "Can't have a hero of a kid show killing people", we may not see them killing directly, but the main "heros" are always Killing with explosions. I guess explosion just make it look less Explicit, but they had kill, like a lot xd

    In my last Star Wars d6 game, I played a Mandalorian-force adept who’s favored weapon was a saberpike/electrostaff with a blaster in the pommel.
    The majority of the heft was made of baskar. So even unpowered it was an effective weapon against a sith or jedi.
    When stowed, the weapon would collapse shorter and fold in half, making not much longer that a double saber.
    When used as a staff, it was a rather effective blunt weapon. When used as an electrostaff, again it was effective as a blunt weapon with the added damage of the electric shock. When used as a saberpike the energy blade was projected as a semi flat blade with two dagger like side blades that were about 40* off to either side.
    The lower half of the heft held a blaster that fired out the pommel that was the equivalent of a heavy blaster.
    He also had many of the other tools mandos used, the gauntlet, jet pack, etc. he also trained in various forms of unarmed combat.
    Pretty much, he was a weapon in many ways. And prided himself on efficiency capturing or dispatching his target, per the client’s preference.

    Plus in star wars legends. Their are few jedi who use blasters during the clone wars and old republic. But the counsel disproved of them.

    The Jedi, since the end of the Sith as a whole, have never been trained to fight a trained military. Mace took his strike unit into Geonosis the first time completely unprepared. The Jedi thought they were just that good. At least some kind of armor, homespun can't even stop dust. Maybe they should have taken blasters as well. In my own opinion, Mace should have at least thought that there was a chance they would be out numbered

      Yeah I would use a non-lethal blaster if I was a jedi. It would be much easier to defeat villains and public gangsters.

      Yes i beleive i heard that in the original they supposedly used a rotating mirror which would reflect light as it spins, the camera would just see a bright line. There is the kenobi vs vader duel where you can see the light saber has a little cable/wire run from the light saber into the sleeve (this wasnt meant to be seen but it still is there) powering the little generator in the handle to make the mirror spin so the camera would see a "light saber blade".

      after the OG Trilogy, computers were able to paint a neon light over a steel rod, which were what was used most of the time afterwards.
      On a side note, rotating mirrors seem a bit fragile to be wacking against each other.

      I doubt the force could be used that way. You can just the force to stop blasters or create a deflecting barrier, but not to actually change a laser's direction.

      @@olafgurke4699 Problem being redirecting a blaster shot midflight is probably far more difficult than just deflect it by touch. One can do that with a rocket, most likely, but I doubt anyone is strong enough to do it with a blaster shot.

    Concept of guns being avoided dates back to Paradice Lost by John Milton. In this epic poem, Milton describes a battle between Micheal (with his angels) and Satan (with the fallen angels). The host of heaven used swords and the host of hell used cannons. Using cannons was considered as a symbol of cowardice, of recklessness, and of a lack of concern for life. To use a sword ment you had to look your apponet in the eyes and watch the life force leave him or her while your blade was embedded in your apponet's body.     I want to see a story about a jedi, one who had a rough childhood and mastered blasters at a young age before becoming a jedi, during a difficult time in the galaxy (for example the great purge, clone wars, galactic civil war, etc) and see him/her carry 2 blaster pistols. Maybe even be a jedi sentinel, who practices with blasters and maybe other scoundrel types of things, I want to see this jedi criticized by jedi peers for being too unorthodox and dark, then eventually fall to the dark side and maybe do some criminal sort of stuff? Like maybe bounty hunting? Just a rough idea but i think that'd be neat

    4:45 Thank you I wish Disney and Finn would realize this. I hated that scene when random Joe blow Finn can just pick up a saber and fight Kylo like it's a regular sword. If anyone can just pick up a saber then Fuck the Jedi apparently.

    I saw it as practical.
    1) Light saber can deflect blasters and slug throwers.
    2) No stray shots.
    3) Courage. One must approach and stand at arms length do do harm.
    4) Possible redemption. Being so close allows for conversation and asking why the violence ?
    5) Less practice. Blasters require training . Perhaps the Jedi can see ahead as to when the aim is right. Earth "slug throwers" move when the trigger is pulled. One must train at keeping the aim through till recoil hits.
