"This axe jumps out of the wood." Don't learn the hard way that a Fiskars does as well...and it will spit out of the wood and bust your teeth if you're not holding that head end when you push down on that handle! Man, i want one of those Buckin' axes! Splitting wood the most cathartic activities a man can do. Love it!
I’ve gained invaluable insights from these two incredible gentlemen, whose vast experience, knowledge, and wisdom resonate with people of all ages and backgrounds. Their guidance is truly inspiring and enriching.❤🙏🏾
More great footage with the Essential Craftsman. Thank you for the Axe Splitting tips. Appreciate you explaining the how of Splitting. Love the job Scott ,and yourself did on Myrtle.
@5:15 "I just let my hands go. I let the tool go in my hands." The flick technique is the most efficient piece of advice I can remember receiving regarding body mechanics relative to using long-handled tools. I've become an incredibly capable axeman because of it. Additionally, this technique has been equally as effective while using a pickaxe to excavate rocky soil in my yard: * When I let go of a handled tool, my body doesn't react to that tool's impact on rock, soil or other surface. This maximizes the ability for the tool to do the work it's designed for; with the least amount of necessary physical force needed to do the job. Thank you Buckin', for showing the simple and deep joy of our bodies using practical tools in sustainably enjoyable ways.
Priceless content as always, its full of little tricks and the finess of our experienced elders, that is bringing us power and knowlege, thank you Buckin!
I accidentally figured out how to do the Buckin Flick. I was fatigued using an 8lb maul so my grip started getting laxed in the swing….which led to a “flick”. BINGO!!! Loosen my grip and let the maul or axe do it’s thing. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Have just split 10 cubic meters of Australian gum by hand over a couple of weeks , maybe 2 cube on my splitter . By hand is very enjoyable and your tips are always in my mind . Knots down , work the edges and the flick . Cheers
Fun fact in that the Jatoba used in the axe handle is also known as Brazilian Cherry from S.A., but is much harder than domestic cherry due to the higher silica content and has a density closer to a rosewood. Its not only hard but also beautiful with pretty ribbon grain ranging from tan sap wood to deep reddish brown heart wood colors and is used in high end flooring and architectural wood working.
It takes a hefty full swing and a big wide maul to split most of the wood we burn here. Ponderosa. Stringy, sticky, pitchy... I don't think the bullet would work here. It's not uncommon to successfully split the wood, but it's still stuck together with a bunch of overlapping stringy stuff. That's where a big wide maul is necessary to drive through the split again and rip and cut everything apart.. Anyone used one of these in ponderosa?
I have a chopper 1 USA axe for splitting wood it's awesome. I have a small wood stove to heat my little 1985 Toyota van wagon that I camp in. Been cutting at Central Wood Products in East Bethel Minnesota for 3 years now. I've cut ash, cedar, oak, maple, poplar, basswood, cottonwood, birch all sorts of wood. Mostly use birch and oak for the stove.

Hey Buckin! Would love one of those axes but out of my current budget. Would you consider raffling one from time to time? Would open up to a lot of us and I imagine you would make a lot more than usual! Thanks for all the wisdom and inspiration over the years you have changed my life!

Me too! I’ve split many cords with an X27, but I must admit, I’d sleep MANY nights in the doghouse for one of those Wood Bullets! 😂

I remember Buckin describing the Jatobi handle swings like a Rock in a Sock.😆
My brother in law Nathan works for Liam Hoffman making axes. Top notch axes! Great video!
