27:01 I love this. I am not a diver, but the second she says "I'm starting to panic", everyone's head lamps shoot right to her, and as soon as she says "I can't", immediately everyone swims over to help. I know that this is exactly what this video is about, but it really is beautiful to watch.

The fact that such an experienced diver panicked so quickly to me shows how quickly everything can fall apart even if you’re confident this would never happen to you. She would have died if she didn’t have tons of help.

@@DIVETALK You showed a cool head in your DPV class. I hope, like your magic sinuses and ear canals, that will always be the case. I would be very interested to see if she ever reviewed the video herself and said why she thinks she got so flustered that time. I’m sure she’s had an equipment mishap at some other time. Interviewing these divers to talk about their own mistakes would be fascinating and helpful.

@@The_ZeroLine When I took my dive training they talked about perceptual narrowing. Basically as the stress level increases you tend to perceive less and less of your surroundings and start to focus on the source of the stress. Clearly this can be problematic when you have multiple things to be monitoring i.e. air supply, navigation, buoyancy, deco limit etc.
The other thing is CO2 buildup brings about the sensation of panic. I believe rebreather divers actually learn to identify this as a warning sign their system may not be functioning properly. Unfortunately things spiral when you panic. The stress from her equipment malfunction and the kicking effort to get to the surface would have undoubtedly increased her breathing rate. This could overwhelm the ability of her regulator to deliver enough oxygen on top of the fact she was breathing the cave air which it seems did not have sufficient oxygen. The CO2 buildup would spike her heart rate even higher continuing to make things worse.
Her buddies did the best thing possible by staying calm and giving her firm directions to start taking the steps necessary to start unwinding the multiple issues.

Love said,"if you can't find time to do it right the first time, where will you find the time to do it right a second time!?" I find that counting my breaths or counting seconds while watching my watch helps slow me down. Good decisions count most in high stress situations. Panic is always the enemy that kills. Count three good breaths, then make a decision. Good decisions that cause pain are better than bad decisions that kill you.

I used to be a very active diver, but haven’t done so in 20 years. I accidentally stumbled across your videos. You’ve really put cave diving into perspective. By reviewing these videos, I am learning so much, not only about cave diving, but regular diving. I’ve found a good instructor 45 mins away from me. I am re-certifying to dive again with a goal to work towards becoming a cave diver. You guys have taught me that as long as I dive within my limits and practice what I have learned regularly, I will be fine. Also that there are procedures and solutions for emergencies. I am learning a ton by watching you guys review emergency situations and providing the solutions which is fantastic as I learn best through applied situations… maybe that’s the critical care nurse in me. I can’t thank you guys enough for all of this. May I please ask for your email to ask a few things? Best regards and much gratitude, Terri from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Cave diving is amazing. It’s honestly not that hard or scary, as long as you get educated completely, take the classes and have all the right equipment. (3 lights, drysuit, sidemount with 2 tanks, 2 reels, 2 spools, 2 cutting devices, backup mask, etc etc).
Also note… when you’re new to cave diving, I recommend sticking with caverns at first. Even after you’re certified, doing lots of practice in cavern areas will help you gain practice. And when you do actual caves, do the spacious open ones that have NO SILT, in Dominican Republic and Mexico. Don’t do restrictive caves or silty caves until you’re a pro (I still avoid silty caves, they’re just a no for me). And until you’re an experienced pro, always do your cave diving with a guide who knows the caves well! It’s honestly not hard at all if you have a good guide and stay calm.

Loved the description of using the smb as a buoyancy device as I had a similar issue and my smb was what kept me buoyant. My inflator didn’t come off completely but was so loose the bcd wouldn’t hold air. I felt like an idiot when I was back on the boat that I didn’t check that my inflator was secure, and having my BCD useless at 80 ft was pretty unnerving. Sure makes you appreciate the buddy check before splashing. Ever since I double check everything before entering the water. But man, watching this video gives me a chill regarding how much worse my mistake could have been.

Unfortunately, I have PTSD which has nothing to do with water however as a result, I'm extremely claustrophobic with many triggers, that provoke full on panic attacks so unless there's away to overcome this, I most likely will never dive! Interesting to see, i always have a tendency to view situations through my own experiences and attitude and seeing somebody with so many dives panic about a situation like that really makes me wonder. I personally have had my dump valve of my wing fall off, but i wasnt carrying that much weight, but still i didnt think of it as a crazy problem. Its good practice to not expect ppl to react the same way u would do and to keep a close eye on your buddy, u never know if they will panic super hard to a situation that u find very managable.

Sooo I’ve been quietly watching for almost 7 months now, just started commenting recently. Just to preface, I never have dived, never will dive. You couldn’t pay me to dive. I had a near drowning experience when I was a kid, so diving is just not in my future. BUT I love your react videos. They’re incredibly educational and on a weird level, have helped me get over some of my fear. Because instead of it just being this foreign, complicated and dangerous activity, you explain everything in a way where someone with zero experience can understand it. And you have taken that unknown fear, because you go through these videos and explain what went wrong, what could’ve been done to prevent it and you also explain your gear. Probably doesn’t make sense that your videos Interest me so much, because I’ll never step foot in a large body of water that’s not a shallow pool, but I just wanted to share how much you’ve helped me without even knowing it. Your teaching style is very pleasant and easy to follow. What I wanted to say about this video specifically, I love that you went through her background and experience. You explained the organizations and certifications as well as the awards which helped put her level of experience into perspective. I like that you don’t have this attitude of “I’m the best I know everything there’s no one out there better than me”. You honestly admit your level of experience, which makes me trust what you say even more. Because you have no reason to keep up with a lie, since you put all the cards on the table. There’s a very fine line in reaction videos that hardly any creators walk very well. Usually they mock the people they are reacting to, only try to boost their own ego and how people perceive them, show zero compassion and act ignorant. But you explained exactly what happened, the things she did that you didn’t necessarily agree with, how to prevent that from happening in the future, all the while remaining respectful and compassionate to her situation. You put yourself in her shoes and were completely honest about the fact that you understand it’s a very scary situation and you probably would’ve reacted the same way at first. It’s just really rare that someone on TH-cam, reacting to something they are educated in, doesn’t act like they are perfect and would never make mistakes that any human could make. You know when to point out actual idiots that are endangering others with their reckless behavior as well as content that is riddled with falsities.
I know you’ll probably never see this, but for the slim chance of it happening I felt like I had to tell you thank you for taking some of my fear away. ❤️

I'm not a diver and have no experience in this realm but it's a growing interest with that said toward why an agency not part of the coucil(random thought) is politics(who you know) and fees. One my interest is power lifting and some item may not be certified for one reason or another under what ever organization you lifting for. Not because the equipment don't meet standard but it costs alot to be certified. There's some cheaper powerlifting plates out there(I forget there name) there not certified for meats because they choose not to pay for the certification. Just a thought.
