My Buddha statue was given to me by a monk after I told him I’m scared of monsters at night. He gave me the Buddha to let me know that nothing will harm me because buddha is watching over me

The thing to consider when buying a buddha statue is, "Does this statue add to my sense of peace?"
If the answer is yes then it's the right Buddha statue.

We had Buddhas in the house when I was growing up. Though we are Catholic, my mother liked them and was always picking them up when she saw them at flea markets and antique or thrift type stores. Her father liked the image of Buddha too and considered them good luck....but my mother, referring to the expression on Buddhas face, says that they also make her feel peaceful. So I feel as if the Buddha has always been present in my life, and that may be one of the reasons for my interest in Buddhism. This past Mother's Day, I bought her a beautiful large stone sitting Buddha for her garden that I found at a local garden center. It looks so beautiful with her flowers growing around it.

When the Buddha was alive, and for many decades after he was not depicted in statues. Siddhartha Gautama didn't like being represented directly and preferred to be shown as a footprint, the wheel of dhamma or an empty throne. Statues showing him came long after his death. I agree though, personal feeling is important, as long as you have respect.

    • @jamess8175
      @jamess8175 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

BroccoliRocks Well, to clarify, if the statue is a fat Buddha or some call it the Smiling Buddha, his actual name is Mettaya Buddha (in Pali) and Maitreya Buddha (in Sanskrit). The meaning of the name is Loving-Kindness. As for Siddhartha Gautama whom you mentioned, his name is Sakyamuni Buddha (in Pali) and Shakyamuni Buddha (in Sanskrit). Sakyamuni Buddha is the current Buddha while Mettaya Buddha is the next successor Buddha in the future.

Would you please explain the difference among statutes made out of wood, stone, metal, bone, etc? I notice that all the Bhuddas I saw in Japan where made only out of wood. In Tibet I noticed that all the Bhuddas were made mostly out of metals. Is there a meaning in the materials used to make a Bhudda statue?
    I love your video!!!

I am curious..Buddha never travelled to China but It was Hu yen Sung….who came to India and carried
buddhism to China….Hi Mindah ..anyway Thnx for beautiful presentation..I find Vaishnism and buddhism similar….the way you are saying ..catches attention…..let me mention..without mind and spirit….any worship becomes ritual than spiritual..so mind has to be engaged always in His service…..cosmic connection…If anyone is seriously engaged in Buddism…I request ..please visit sarnath…where Buddha first gave his preaching to famous five deciples……….one of his deciple was King Asoka
Buddha born as prince at Kapilavastu…was so moved by human suffering at tender age…he left palace, beautiful wife, wealth and went to Bodh Gaya (India) for self realization…..where he obtained Siddhi…There one girl from lower level fed him rice pudding….then he came to Sarnath to start preaching meaning of human birth in this world, nonviolence….If one practices and follows ..His/her mind and soul will be enlightened….he will never be able to envy anyone….it gives you absolute mental strength…you will enjoy meditaing more yourself rather enjoying partying ..It makes you very balanced one… WE keep specil place called temple room at home….which is very imp

Nice to find some super informative videos about Buddhism, they have been really helpful!

I just bought my first Buddhist statue. Ive been a Buddhist for 25 years and finally bought a medicine buddha brass statue. Ive been using incense holders inlue of a statue. My ex wife forbidden Buddhist items in my household. But its 30" tall and 24" wide. I will be holding a over night visual and fasting for 3 days with candles and incense. Because of the world situation in 2021 im not able to have it blessed, but a visual is almost the same. It's going to be in my bedroom because im always sick (lung problems) and medicine buddha should be where you heal. Thanks for the great video, im excited.

Hi Mindah-Lee :) is there something meaningful about the posture of the small statue I have? The figure is kneeling, using his one hand to balance a bowl (for a tea candle) on his knees. Until this video I always thought the Buddha statues were portrayed as wearing a headdress of some kind. Is what I am thinking of really very thick curly hair tied in a top knot?
What about the Thai Buddha statues with the spike on top. Is that supposed to be part of a helmet or a headdress?
Why would the Buddha be portrayed with hair if the Sangha shaved their heads?

I accidentaly got the Buddha meditating with a bowl in his hands. I don't care if it might not be the acchual Buddha, but I use the bowl as a candle holder (LED, I put him on a wooden shelf, where I made a mini shrine that I don't want to catch fire to). I use the light to remind me that Buddha is the light.

I always buy a Buddha that feeds my soul. I have recently taken to buying Monks. Too many people have preconceptions of each Buddha. With a monk...not so.

Shakyamuni didn't want images made of him, yet a statue of someone sitting reminds us to take the time to sit. All become Buddha as as "bodhi" means innate intelligence, which we are. Enlightenment, beholding light within, is realization. Even the Epistles of the New Testament says, "God is light." God just means the highest good. We continue to discover exactly what life is...

I have a locker at my job, is it okay to put my Buddha statue in there? Thanks for the video and the information. As a beginner Buddhist I'll definitely subscribing to you.

I love this, I have had buddhas for years and I knew that they were all a bit different, but it's great to know what the differences are. I am looking for a buddha statue for my community garden because I feel it's missing something and I think this will complete it. I need to find a good one that will make the garden look tranquil and I am planning on putting it near a water fountain, will this be ok?

As far as I was told by a Theravada monk, a Theravada Buddha has a sharp point on the top of the head. A Mahayana Buddha is rounded. The one behind Mindah in the video would be Mahayana.

Hi thanks for the very informative video 🙏🏼. I have a question, I have a standing Buddha statue that had his left hand raised and facing outward, like semuii-in but performed using the left hand, however yogan-in is not performed. What is the significance of the left hand being raised instead of the the right. In Hinduism blessings are always given with the right hand. I hope you can help. Thank you
