I'm about to cry when I watch this video, I live in Vietnam and about to go to the US to study, I feel so happy that's everyday I still have chance to have nice time with the Buddhism without any defence from the other and have good chance to study it. I also want to cry cuz even you're having hard time, your love with Buddhism is still go on, not any knowledges is more important than your love and practice to the Buddhism. Don't worry, you're doing better than even some people live in my country, even if Buddhism is part of their tradition and they have good chance and Buddhist knowledge, your love and practice to the Buddhism mean more. Namo Buddha. Nam Mô Đại Bi Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát, xin Người phù hộ cho chàng trai trẻ này!
When I was a Buddha noob and knew nothing about anything I found this video very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to film, edit, and upload this for me to see. Have a nice day.
This is just lovely! How fascinating it is, to see a video from 2012 on a subject like setting up an altar at home. It's informative, simple and straight forward. Thank you for sharing your experience.
What I love about Buddhism is that there are many variations to everything and it doesn't matter as long as your sincere and follow the eight fold path. Good video
Just to add, I want to first say, as a Chinese born Canadian from a traditional Chinese religious household, I really value and respect your decision to follow this path, and i think it's awesome!. And in regards to who's shrine is simpler to who's, it shouldn't matter. We all have our own ways of practicing the teachings of the Buddha with our devotion. And every way practiced is unique and special and shouldn't be criticized. That's just how i feel.
This is a great video. I’m new to Buddhism but my mom had always been interested in the culture and moral ethics of Buddhism. She even went as far as to give me many statues of shakyamuni that she had collected in Asia. I now have a nice collection and have been looking to build a nice peaceful altar. Your video has been amazing and by the way I love the Guan Yin statue, I don’t see many people with statues of the Sangharama bodhisattva.
you can make a travel alter too if you always travel a lot you can make it materials: 1.a small Buddha statue any type Thai Tibetan Chinese you can get it online or dharma shop 2. you will need a medium box metal or wood 3.you will need tons of incense sticks if you don't have a pack of incense sticks buy a pack at a Buddhist store go check if they have it once you have the incense sticks you take a few out maybe like 30 or 40 if it can fit you will need to cut it like 3cm or how many cm you like if your box is medium maybe you don't need to cut so on to the candles part you will need skinny candles it must be yellow or red you can get the short ones in Thailand or online or you can cut it yourself 4.water cups you can get one in online or Buddhist shops but not to big a small one now offerings you can put it in your back pack offering must be only one fruit coz your shrine is small 5. if you have a small incense holder bring it with you if you don't have one bring a play dough make a round ball of it and bring a candle holder too 6.bring a cloth red or white or yellow and you are done put every thing in the box and your ready once you reach destination you put all the things you have in your box place the shrine on a rock or on the box if you want to be placed on the box put the cloth on the box because it may damage the box
Like this video! These are the Buddhist basics no one teaches you unless you visit your teacher on a frequent basis. I been studying to be a Tibetan Buddhist (under the Dzogchen lineage of teachings) and have been looking for tutorials on aspects of Buddhism like this.
In 1:46 minutes into your video you mentioned those plastic candles with dragon design. I live in the UK, so where would I be able to find them, or could you provide a link where I can buy those online? Thanks in advance.
I'm guessing electrical Candle warmers are good too, I have a camouflage style candle warmer that has a bulb in the center that melts the candle, so it has lights and scent(s). The scent i have is pine right now, hope that's fine.
interesting learning about mahayana shrines, cause i'm thai buddhist and my shrine is a chinese monk, a small thai angel statue, maneki neko, an offering bowl, an incense holder, and a holy picture.
bless you brother however late, this video was very succinct and helped me learn many things, your humble attitude about your parents was beautiful to witness, hope the world is seeing you well and happy
Hi: I am a beginner on my Buddha shrine I read that you can offer your Buddha rice, candy fruits, water. can you tell me what else can you offer. your shrine is very beautiful and I love the way you give us instructions of how to make your own shrine. THANK YOU
Why I found in the internet, the Buddha is the tallest one in shrine (on the platform)the Buddha's and bodhisattvas are not on equal level, the other site says the tallest statue is at the back,in your altar, Guan you is at the back, Shakyamuni Buddha is at the front, the japanese style is a shelf-like style with doors and many levels (not to be confused with the Shinto altar which is kamidana or your shelf),each levels has a hole where you can place sutras or mantras inside, the flowers are arranged, there are 7 or more bowls, some shrines contain different foods in the bowl, tea, mochi, most common is water,etc...,the vajrayana practice however has a large container to put the water from the 7-8 bowls and use them for watering plants and many other more, your altar have a little vajrayana practice in it, Tibetan Buddhists often put a thanka(painting of buddhas, bodhisattvas, dharma protecting deities and so on and so forth)at the back of the altar, again with platform, but Tibetan Buddhism or Vajrayana Buddhism has a little different structure of the altar they often have a stupa(pagoda in Chinese)which contains relics or Sarira of gurus or Buddha himself, they place the pagoda or stupa at the left of the statue/s (please don't be confused with the actual pagoda, not the Chinese building or some stuff ok but the dome shaped or bell shaped structure, small ones are placed in the altar, big ones are buildings already) they also place a Dharma book at the right side of the statue/s...
Hey! I am new to buddhism, Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhism, but I have no one to teach me. Im hoping i get some help soon lol. Anyways, I love your altar! Keep up the good work and may you be blessed in your future!
Who are you? If you are VN, you can connect on FB with me to talk about buddhism by vietnamese, I'm vietnamse buddhism. If you are UK, US or some where not VN and don't have FB, you can connect with me on Skype. I think i can help you because that is a way to got good karma
You have a lovely altar. I suggest u use a red cloth to cover the altar, like a curtain. When u are not praying, close the curtain. Because it's considered as quite disrespectful to change your clothes in front of buddha.
Hey. Very good video. Sorry for my bad english but I am from Germany and some words are difficult. :-) I have a question about these five little white glasses around the candles. You talk about it, that bigger is not better. For what are they? Did I put something in it or did I just leave them there? And the meditation bell. Did I ring it before the meditation begins and when I stop my meditation. Hope you can help me a little bit with these questions. I am at the beginning to learn.
Hello TheBuddhaNex This is the first video that I watched from your channel,I noticed in your altar that it is in Vajrayna Buddhism (the one in Nepal and Tibet) because they use mandalas at the back.
I think, in all of Mahayana altar or Chinese altar, all statue's face must facing forward, nor back or side. Especially in Indonesia, the chinese altar in house, we have to choose the most neatly room in house. Most of altars in Indonesia, we build one special room to make an altar. For the table, we usually use glass to avoid the burn of the table, and also we used the red clothe, because red in chinese is like a happiness, not white, white in chinese is sorrow when there is one of our family is death.
for western people white is purity of soul, perfection of beauty. bride wears white because she's pure and beautiful. Red is a color of passion and even wrathful.
I would like to know Setsabbati's learning origin of his/her teaching of the Buddha? I would also, lie to remind him/her of the basic teaching of compassion. If you find something that maybe wrong in this young man's presentation, be a teacher. Do not ridicule, or degrade. That is not the Mahayana way. I would like to ad that the Mahayana tradition is practiced in many different countries of origin, including, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Japan. Each add cultural variances to the tradition and alter settings. There is nothing wrong with this young man's alter and I applaud his resourcefulness!
Hey mate, just wanted to say your videos are so helpful!! Thank you for sharing your altar setup tips with us; it really helps strengthen our dhamma. Also, you're an excellent presenter - really natural public speaking style with a brilliant vocabulary=) Are you Canadian, by any chance?
very nice bro!! do you know any of the liturgy yet?? what culture do you practice? chinese, korean, japanese or viet? if u practice chinese i can point you in the way of some recordings for chanting the three refuges, heart sutra, and the great compassion dharani along with some other stuff.
im not very sure about the cooked or uncooked rice. But one thing i can be sure of is that it is common to find cooked rice as an offering. It's recommended. A respectful heart towards buddha is the most important ingredient in setting up an altar. Did u ask why you cant offer uncooked rice?
Is there enough room for you to properly use that Shrine? For prostrations and offering ceremonies? After all, the Shrine is something for your mind to use to further your practice. Perhaps you should make another video in which you state the purpose of the Shrine to the viewers.. anyway, just a comment I thought would help. Also, don't mind all their bullshit - anger is just attachment not getting what it wants.
As far as i know, theravada is a buddhist practice that is known as the smaller vehicle, meaning that the teachings are for u to get enlightment. On the other hand, mahayana means great vehicle, u are supposed to help people around u when u are enlightened.
your sakyamuni statue is very lovely, i feel like such a Noob asking this, but what is the reason for having an altar and making offerings? is it to invite the spirit of the eternal Buddha into your home?
No spirit, Shakamuni Buddha died over 2500 years ago and taught "annata" or "no self". There is no spirit, and for Shakkamuni, no karma, no re-birth, he left this world of Samsara, this world of dissatisfaction. Buddhists don't pray to the buddhas. He died but left the dharma, the teachings to follow so that we may also extinguish our karma and become buddha. As far as having an altar, it is not necessary, but many find it a way to focus orur practice of the dharma. Again making offerings are again to strengthen our resolve to practice by honering the teacher. Traditional offerings are water, food, flowers, light, incense ... we offer them to represent parts of our practicing the dharma. e.g. we offer fire/light as it symbolizes illumination of the darkness of ignorance .. it allows us to see all the dark corners of our mind and gain wisdom..
I don't know. I think it will be a bit awkward. I've never seen a oil burner in place of the incense in a Buddhist temple, so sticking with the incense will be better.
Mahayana, hinyana and bajrayana all are nice. buddhist monk should be pureveg and live simple life.this is major rule of buddhism. buddha Said if you don't have any food to eat then you can eat meat. This comment is from the land of buddha lumbini nepal south Asia.anyway good information
I like this phrase from you: "The size of your offering does not make you a better person." Words of wisdom indeed! 🙏

Lovely video. As a Buddhist myself, I was really touched at the enthusiasm that you have. May you receive all the blessings and joy from Buddha.

Very nice. I like to setup the altar before each daily 5am meditation, it becomes a ritual in itself and part of the meditation.
You're such a great narrator. :D
i do admire your initiative and hunger to learn and teach others so keep up! as for me the best is your desire to seek enlightenment.

3:32, if you happen to live in a cave or desert...lol
You might be surprised. Monks, rishis, bodhisattvas and others tend to be found in such places.
I am thinking about turning an attic into a prayer room with shrines

I like the altar and thangka, all items are beautiful. I'd prefer more expensive things for the altar though

Where is Mahayana Buddhism practiced in India? In Bangladesh, West Bengal, Tripura and Odisha, Hinayana Buddhism is praciced? What about Bodh Gaya?

No, but in China were he features in Daoism, many Buddhist temples feature his image. He's very highly respected in both faiths.
Is the anime poster being higher than buddha considered disrespectful? or only real images of people etc?

Do the candles and lights have to be real?
He is a Bodhisattva which is also a venerated deity. He is also one of the most venerated in China, as he is a national hero.
Great video. Thank you very much! :)
You should always use red candles for the buddha or Bodhisattva and white lights for ur ancestors
good job :)
Shout out to the Dollar General 😄😄
I thought this statues can only be placed at living room, how come you can put them at bedroom?
The only taboo I've heard is that you shouldn't set up an altar in a couple's bedroom.
You can put statues as long as they aren't blessed, but your should NEVER put an altar in your bedroom. The energy can impact your sleep
the chinese characters on the piture are the name of a buddha i think it says shakyamuni but i am not sure i cant read it clearly
the buddhist communist the Chinese words say amitufo which mean amitabha
Thanakrit's vlog and buddha videos no it doesn't say amituofo
thats written like阿彌陀佛 but there is something else written on that poster
the buddhist communist where
Thanakrit's vlog and buddha videos on the upper side of the poster on the wall behind the shrine
the buddhist communist ohhh I see it its the the red words I can't read it its not too clear
