Hi people, I have suffered from a fear of flying for a long time. My symptoms would start around a week prior to a flight. They would become worse as the days leading up to the flight drew nearer. To the point I would not really sleep the day prior. This is before a 14hr flight mind you! As you can imagine it's the worst possible lead up to a long haul flight. I got on that plane and traveled from Sydney to LAX all in one piece and it was a great flight (minimal turbulence) I have since flewn many international flights and domestic in my home of Australia. As we speak I'm in NZ. I flew 4hrs from Adelaide to Auckland... Then flew to Wellington then to Christchurch. Will be flying back to Adelaide in 11 more days. My point being that there was a time when I would cry to myself on the plane. Every moment in the air... Every noise that I heard was a catastrophic failure about to happen to the plane. I would watch the air stewards move about the plane and if they weren't smiling or they looked busy, I was certain they had been told by the pilot that there was something wrong with the plane. Any beep, any change in pitch in the engine noise meant something was wrong. I call this behaviour "scanning". It's looking for something you consider out of the ordinary and then creating something out of it. It's your anxious mind trying to confirm your belief that flying is unsafe. It isn't unsafe! On the contrary is very safe. Turbulence is another one we struggle with. Planes are designed to fly through ALL levels of turbulence... Even severe turbulence. Here's a fact for you. The last time a plane crashed due to turbulence was in 1966. It was a boeing 707. It was due to a pilot deviating from his actual flight path. Partially due to design standards not even remotely close to what they are today. That's 51yrs ago... Do you know how many flights there have between in 51yrs around the world? Every day? 24hrs a day? The number would be staggering. Man I never meant for this post to get this long! Haha. Anyway, I'm trying to help that person that TH-cam'd "fear of flying". That person that has an upcoming flight and is starting to panic slightly. I'd sit with you and share my knowledge with you during the flight... Hell... I'd hold your hand. I actually do have an anxiety disorder and if I can do it so can you! I've had panic attacks before a flight. At the airport... On the plane. You name it I've had it. And I'm in New Zealand right now. Don't let it beat you! YOU CAN DO IT!! ✈️ I dunno how TH-cam works but I'd be happy to chat if you need more convincing! Send me a message... Should get it through Gmail. 💕 And ✌️
For me it's not about fear of crashing, it's about the sheer height of the thing. For me, being 35,000 feet above the earth it terrifying, just sheer bloody terror. Hope to one day overcome and fly again.
To those who are still scared. Relax guys ... Just don't think too much. You'll have a lovely flight. Just play soothing music and doze off. Trust me it's gonna be a lovely flight :) Happy flying everyone
Flying is statistically the safest way to travel long distances. Also if you do have a fear of flying, remember that pilots have to train for many many months, even years, before they can fly passengers. Planes have to be maintained to such a high standard so I would never worry about them falling apart midair. Flying is such a fun experience and it's going to be the beginning of your holiday!
I watched this before my flight today. The thing is, I don't have a problem with the noises. I know what it sounds like when the flaps are extended and the landing gear is deployed. What makes me nervous is the way the plane moves during take off and landing as well as in flight turbulence. I understand how planes work and the odds against crashing but it still makes me nervous.
that video was inspirational. i have a phobia of flying but not anymore. tomorrow i am going on a 10 hours flight from canada to england and this video has taken most of my fear away. thank you for this amazing video
Oh my goodness, this is wonderful. I'm autistic, and I'm flying alone overseas soon on a Virgin Atlantic flight. I've never flown before and this video is actually super helpful. Thank you so much!
Thanks. Flying alone without a friend or family on board is not a very comfortable experience especially when the turbulence comes. I can just remind myself that the pilots know much much better than me, and they have families as well as I do.
Probably a major contributor to the anxiety air travelers feel is down to the feeling of not being in control yourself, unable to do anything about it. Everything relies upon the skills of the crew, ATC and the engineers....I think its called trust.
This is an old comment, but yes, exactly. I have GAD (general anxiety disorder), and a big part of my particular experience with it is that I'm a perfectionist and a bit of a control freak. Anxiety strips that away and makes me feel helpless. I don't even like riding in cars with someone else driving unless I know them really well. I always just assumed it was due to my control issues, but you've nailed it by pointing out that it's about trust. Like, riding with family or close friends? I don't think twice about it. Riding in a car with someone I don't know all that well driving? I'm tense the whole time. This translates into flying as well, even though I know I am in NO way capable of flying a plane and that the pilot and co-pilot do this all day, every day and are infinitely better qualified than I am. It still bothers me.
Thank you. I haven't been on a plane for 5 years .. I was 11 , now I'm 16 & I'm terrified completely. This calms me down and even gets me excited lol 😁
Nice video. Someone I know went on a Flying Without Fear course and loved it. She said they kept it all really light-hearted, and only one person out of the entire class of previously very scared people was unable to go through with the flight at the end
I have over the years developed a fear of flying. I'm ex-airforce and was an avionics engineer so I know what all the noises are already. I've flown all over the world and now work on yachts. I used to love flying but over the years started to get nervous. Now I really struggle whenever I'm flying. It's really frustrating as when I do long haul which I do often I can relax four hours. It's the windsheer/turbulence that does it I think.
Statistics show that, unless you're REALLY unlucky, you would have to fly all day, every day for 15,300 years before being involved in a fatal air crash. BOOM.
I have been flying since I have been a baby. While I am not afraid of flying this is a great video. It took me many years to figure out what all those sounds were. This video is great to explain what is going on for the average person.
You're exactly right :) There could be a go-around for any reason, from obstructions as you said, or simply too high an airspeed or angle of descent. I am a student pilot, and the main rule is to be stable by 300ft, or you go-around. People at my airport sometimes don't listen to the tower, so I have had to go-around then. To the people who are scared on go-arounds - don't worry, the pilots are choosing the safest option.
It's amazing how the pilots can see microscopic cracks in the wings during visual inspection or a worn wire that might set off a fire in the fuselage. Great eyesight guys.
i hate the take off and the in the air part but i always love the fucking landing not because its the part where we get to finally get off but because it's so much fun and i love the feeling
Light Yagami taking off is more fun then landing cos u can feel the power of the plain and it pushes u back in to your seat. I find landing hurts my ears a lot
I don't like turbulence. I have a 10 hr flight from JFK to São Paulo, Brazil on Saturday and I'm really nervous. This is my first time flying alone. Wish me luck!
this is an excellent must-see for first time flyers. almost every time i travel i encounter a newbie who is absolutely panic stricken at every bump and noise, especially during decent through the clouds when you can't see anything through the window.great job!
This is an amazing video, even though im not afraid of flying i still find it a great informational video. Im going to be sending it to all my family, they're all still scared of flying!
for me, when I am scared, that moment when your up after about a minute is when my adrenaline sorta chills a bit. I put my life into the hands of the pilot. I usually trust them immensely and I am able to because they have managed to get this huge machine into the air
This video helps people who have great fear of flying and helps them how to overcome their fears. plane rides are much safer than driving cross country for few days. They have safety rules on every airlines. I flew on planes about 12 times since I was 3 yrs old. When I flew for the first time, i felt a little nervious but I felt better and enjoyed the plane cuz I love flying and never had a fear of flying before.
I usually board the plane last as it helps me to not have as much time to sit and worry. Also, I always shake the pilots hand if possible, as this usually gives my mind less to worry about, about who is behind that door getting me home safely. Makes the flight feel a little more human to me. I usually bring carry a carry on with snacks, drinks, music, magazines, everything needed to keep my attention from the take off, and initial cruising. I actually enjoy night flying better, as I can see less of what's going on with the plane, while watching the ground, wondering where all the people are going.
Adrian, you've flown twice and you're nearly a pro now. You'll be fine. I got over my fear by telling myself how much I loved to fly and how cool it felt to take off. I kept telling myself that over and over, and it worked. I really love to fly now. You'll do great. ;-)
The Runt Project Turbulence is just like driving down a bumpy road. You're flying so fast that a few little pockets of air could never disrupt your flight. Yes turbulence is completely out of the blue, but if you expect for it to happen and think about it the way I described it above, you should be able to conquer your fears!
Thank you, this helped me a lot. I haven't been on a plane for a few years and I'm going on one in early January. The last time I was on a plane, there were extreme weather conditions and the plane made a lot of strange noises, this really helped calm me down, thanks again
I am a bit afraid of flying... The bigger the aircraft is, the more afraid i am. I just had shorts flights (not more then 4 hours) in small aircrafts. I wanna so more 'far away' countries, but I am nerveus for the flight... this movie helped me to understand flying a bit. Thats good! Thanks for making/uploading.
As much as this helped, for me it's mainly the G forces and the fear of getting plane sick that is why I'm scared of planes, but this also helped to explain the sounds so thanks.
I really had a bad case of fear of flying until I understood these things. I specially abhor the small turbo-prop ones but later I was at ease with them just the same. In inclement weather though I still have the jitters, specially when all you see in the windows are white clouds or rain trickling.
This was really good and informative ive just done a fear of flying course (Australia) and this just tops it off.....altho still nervy this helped a lot..Thanks so much
Im scared of flying Im flying out to Toronto next week from the UK. Suffice to say Im not looking forward to it however for me its not so much not being in control, its my lack of understanding of what goes on on a flight and those weird (to me) noises and bangs as described so this has helped, thanks.
I wish I was flying with Virgin but aer lingus Is a safe travel company. This has helped me quite a lot. Who else is watching this because they have a flight in a few days 😂
Owen Murphy First time on a plane on the 2nd and I'm shitting myself 😂😂
Owen Murphy yes !! Yes I am !!!
Owen Murphy I have a flight in August and watching it now!
yup
Owen Murphy me lmao
For me it's not about fear of crashing, it's about the sheer height of the thing. For me, being 35,000 feet above the earth it terrifying, just sheer bloody terror. Hope to one day overcome and fly again.
This should be available to watch on planes, it would really help!
I'm not scared of flying, it's just when you are climbing altitude and you hit air pockets and the plane drops, always gets me
I hate the takeoff until cruise altitude. I'm fine with cruise altitude and the landing but I also hate turbulence.
Fletch same!
I'm the exact same way!! I squeeze my poor boyfriends hand to death when we take off but give it 10-20 minutes after take off and I'm totally fine
Fletch taking off is the best bit . turbulence is fun 2
I hate landing
Same here
I'd need to see hundreds of this videos to remove years of Air Crash Investigation and Seconds from Disaster.
To those who are still scared. Relax guys ... Just don't think too much. You'll have a lovely flight. Just play soothing music and doze off. Trust me it's gonna be a lovely flight :) Happy flying everyone

You'd think airlines would have these type of videos on their on-board programming, I'm sure it would help lots of folks new to flying.
I have over the years developed a fear of flying. I'm ex-airforce and was an avionics engineer so I know what all the noises are already. I've flown all over the world and now work on yachts. I'm glad you guys cover the Go-around. People freak out when that happens when this procedure is done for safety!
I've been flying for years and I still get anxious. But this makes me feel much better about those bumps and grinds. Thank you for sharing!
I get very nervous in takeoff and turbulence
going on a plane tomorrow but this helped loads thank you so much

Adrian, you've flown twice and you're nearly a pro now. You'll be fine. I got over my fear by telling myself how much I loved to fly and how cool it felt to take off. I kept telling myself that over and over, and it worked. I really love to fly now. You'll do great. ;-)
This is by by far the best video I've seen to help quell my fears, good job! Thanks for sharing.

Best place to sit if you're nervous, is the wing like they show here. Every noise you hear, you can actually see, and not guess what is happening.
Virgin are the best airline in my opinion. Their service is phenomenal :)
Thank you so muchhh sir with the cool British accent! I'm not able to fully get rid of this fear but I guess I feel better now.
ı have been on a plane about 13 tımes thıs really helped as ı stıll get quıte nervous but thıs really dıd help thank you x
I really had a bad case of fear of flying until I understood these things. I specially abhor the small turbo-prop ones but later I was at ease with them just the same. In inclement weather though I still have the jitters, specially when all you see in the windows are white clouds or rain trickling.
I am afraid of flying. I am afraid of crash landing part. This video has helped so much thank you
