I grew up on Hercules, it was my very first big coaster and it made me a coaster nerd. I have such fun memories of riding that with my dad. When Hercules was taken out, I refused to ride Hydra out of loyalty to the coaster that made me. Then, I moved an hour away and my hubby, kids, and I started getting season passes and I knew it was time to give it a go. It blew me out of the water and I think it's a great ride. I don't feel the shakiness, nor the headbanging on it and we ride it every time we go. I just wish I got to ride it with my dad before he passed, but I got to have that experience with my own kids, so I'm now the parent making those memories and I think he'd be proud of it.
It was a DEFINITE SHAME they took out Hercules. That coaster was awesome. I loved the g force in the turn at the bottom of the hill for sure. It was also a fairly long ride,at the time, for Dorney Park also. Is the Comet still in operation?? My first wood coaster ride in my life....will never forget that 1st ride! That coaster would beat you up if you sat in the back! Was awesome!
This was the first B&M floorless coaster I’ve ever done! I can now say that I’ve ridden this ride over 20 times since then and I enjoy every second of it!
This was the coaster that got me to like coasters. My friends took me to Dorney in 2019 and peer pressured me to ride this and then I ended up riding more than 4 times that day and loved it. Got back to Dorney in 2023 after riding it for that first time all those years ago and I got to ride this again, and while it was different that what I remembered, (the shakiness) I still appreciate this ride for what it has done to me with liking coasters!
I finally got to ride Hydra a couple years ago, and I loved it for what it was - the most quirky B&M I'd ever been on! It was great that it didn't contain the "standard" inversion elements. And I have no memory of it being rough (and being in my upper 40's at the time of riding, I would've remembered that!)
Poor Dorney. They debuted Talon only to be upstaged by Nitro. Then they built Hydra only to be upstaged by Kingda Ka. At least this year Iron Menace has a shot at being the one to upstage Flash.
I think B&M Floorless coasters overall are underated at least for what enthusiasts give them. I'm glad you reviewed one of them. This looks super fun and unique.
@OklahomaCoasterFan Kraken And Batman The Dark Knight Are Definitely More Underrated For Me And I Have Hydra As The Best Coaster In Dorney Park And 11th Best In The State
I remember always being afraid to ride Hydra. Then, one day, I said to myself I’m riding it and ended up going back in line three times in a row! Now, it’s one of my favorite rides at Dorney Park.
Hot take, this is my favorite floorless. I haven't ridden it since 2017, but it was running very smooth with some good airtime sprinkled in. It feels like a nice breath of fresh air from all of the cookie cutter floorlesses
ANY B&M Looper Or Just Floorless Coasters? Because I Feel Like All Dive Coaster First Drops Any Wing Over Drop Kumba's And Incredible Hulk's And I Can Go On Forever Since Every B&M Invert Also Has A Better First Drolp
Living only 40 minutes from here and actually working there during the haunt one year and being there many times, i love dorney and especially hydra. My favorite coaster there by far.
I rode it last summer and it was extremely rough and it felt like the train was struggling to make it through the layout as it was pretty slow (rainy day with only a couple riders). It’s definitely a beautiful ride though!
Dorney and Hershey were my home parks as a kid, so I haven’t really had the chance to try other B&M’s. I’m glad I at least got to ride the one with the Jojo roll, I love slow inversions!
The Jojo roll was added to emulate the initial run from the station that Hercules had before you got to the life. Also, if you like rough coasters, you would’ve loved Hercules, especially before they started modifying it. The curve over the water after the lift hill was INSANE.
Fondest memory was on Hydra was losing my phone on the jojo roll. Dorney retrieved it after the park closed and mailed it to me the next day. I can’t wait to head back to Dorney this summer!
Very accurate rating and review. I was not blown away by this when I rode it about 10 years ago. The Jojo roll was very cool and different, but after that, I agree with the 6 rating. I'm someone who never gets tired of vertical loops, so the lack of one on here made me miss it. And yeah, Steel Force and Talon were definitely my top 2 when we went.
So I rode this very early in it's life and it was glassy smooth then, and what I like about it so much was the feeling that I could ride the whole thing (after three jojo roll) with no restraint and just float through the whole layout. It's lack of forces we're actually appealing in a weird way
I assume all the weird elements on Hydra were purposely made to cut corners on budget. This ride replaced Hercules, one of the tallest wooden coasters ever built. It being so sunken and awkward wasn't because of a height restriction- it was to save cost.
i agree ive noticed for a smoother ride on it like as close to the middle all of my middle rides were fairly smooth not talon smooth but a lot better then the back and front. i like hydra more then possessed but its dropped a lot as its just so rough and sshakey now they 100% need to get it retracked like hulk
Hydra was the coaster that I looked at when I first started becoming an enthusiast. It may just be a run of the mill floorless coaster, but I’m pretty excited to ride it.
I grew up right by Dorney. I don't like this one ONLY because I miss Hercules so much. It was my first coaster I went on time and time again while I was there as a kid ❤
I did not have a very pleasant ride experience on this. I only rode it one time and thought it was extremely rough. It was probably just a bad ride but the head banging was not good. I’ve done many old school B&Ms but this one seemed rougher than most. The layout on the other hand is very creative
Honestly hydra was pretty smooth for me, it’s very unique but also at the same time the zero g roll is pitiful. The ride is a 6/10 for me because it’s so unique but it just doesn’t have forces asides from the jojo roll. My entire visit was pretty bad so hopefully I get a worthy round 2 for this park. It has so much potential. But my visit was not great.
I guess I’m a little different than most enthusiasts because I love Hydra, easily my number 1 at Dorney. Talon comes in at second. Steel Force just doesn’t do much for me. Maybe it’s the uniqueness of Hydra that really shoots it up there for me
I love how quirky and different it is. I like that it's not intense, as many intense floorless coasters give me headbanging. Hydra doesn't. It's easily my favorite ride at Dorney Park. On the subject of inversions, it either has 7 or it has 4. 3 of the inversions, including the 2 in the cobra roll, just barely reach the 135-degree mark. If you want to be technical, which is what I do, it definitely has 7. But then, Storm Chaser and Iron Gwazi would also have 3. If you go by feel, then you can start disqualifying some inversions, but that will also be very subjective person to person. rcdb should be technical about it across the board, but they aren't.
@1:02, Actually, no. Hydra was second. THE first Star Plat- ... (ahem) Jojo roll was Supersonic Odyssey at Cosmo's World in Malaysia, which opened about a year before it.
This was the first coaster of our 5 park trip last summer. The Jo-jo roll was unexpected and we were very much "What the f*** was that?" Dorney overall, though, was way better than our expectations. And for me- 1. Posessed, 2. Talon, 3. Hydra 4. Thunderhawk 5. Steel Force.
i feel like an extra 10ft in height to get a few more mph would’ve really helped. i was pretty disappointed when i rode it, especially considering it was one of the first coasters i saw on the internet
I'd personally say you can count an element as an inversion if the track banks beyond 135 degrees. And I don't think that arguable inversion goes beyond that.
I think Hydra would’ve been a snappier ride, had Dorney been able to make the lift hill and first drop higher. Otherwise, I agree, it’s good for what it is!
Wikipedia lists that "inversion" as an inclined dive loop, and claims that GateKeeper is the only other coaster with such an element. But you clearly go upside down on GateKeeper's. Hydra's never inverts. It's more like a tight overbanked turn, not dissimilar to the one found on Mako. If people want to give SFOG grief for calling Mindbender the world's first triple-inverting coaster despite that second "inversion" never going upside down, they ought to give the same consideration to this inversion on Hydra. (And, what do you know, RCDB and Wikipedia both list Mindbender as having two inversions).
If you’ve altered your “upright” orientation beyond 90 degrees, you’re no longer upright, so you must be upside down to some degree, even if not completely. Partially upside down is not at all right side up, so you’re definitely upside down. 😂
Crazy you think it's rough cause I've always thought it was the smoothest floorless coaster out there. I don't think there is one floorless that isn't rough tbh.
This is one of my local parks, and god this ride looks awesome, but man it’s so disappointing. I don’t enjoy this ride that much. So fun to look again though, I could watch it go around for hours.
To be fair, no floorless is worth the drive out of the way. Even top tier ones are just supporting coasters. Superman, seaworld orlandos, bizzaro, etc.
WARNING: Biased Review…. If Hydra has that seventh inversion, then Millennium Force has like four of them.

1. Not an inversion.
2. This might be my favorite coaster at Dorney. Got more airtime on the first drop of Hydra than at any point on Steel Force.

Planning on going to Dorney this year, excited for this, Steel Force, Iron Menace, Talon, Possessed, & Thunderhawk!
That shot of Possessed is GOLD! Love that camera angle too!
My understanding is that the layout was changed because the township wouldn't let them build over the water like they previously did with Hercules!

Hydra

This seems like Batman The Dark Knight with the size but it's way more bizarre.

Hydra the Revenge is the only B&M floorless with no vertical loops

The quote unquote inversion isn't an inversion otherwise Silver Star at Europapark has an inversion !

I rode it when I was there 10 years ago and it is not as forceful and impressive as it appears.
If you’ve altered your “upright” orientation beyond 90 degrees, you’re no longer upright, so you must be upside down to some degree, even if not completely. Partially upside down is not at all right side up, so you’re definitely upside down. 😂
