I've been practicing the Martial Arts for 50 years. We used to do knife sparring (knife and defender). No one ever escapes unscathed.
A guy in the UK did an analysis on knife attacks there. Based on CCTV footage, private security cameras and smartphone video he complied some statistics from 270+ videos. The #1 attack position was a belly stab from low position. The knife is brought up from hands at the sides and a straight thrust. The #2 position was overhand attack "the Chucky" to the chest from shoulder height. Those made up something like 60% of all knife assaults. The other 40% was everything else. It has been about 5 years since I saw those stats so the numbers are approximate but it gives an idea of prevalence.

That would coincide with what I've seen in life, it's always knife cancelled and upwards under the eye level or to the throat with usually a cutthroat razor, popular back in the day. I grew up in London's tougher areas so I've seen a lot. Now I live in Rural Canada and never thought my fighting days would return in my 70's, but the wolves are hungry.

Professor David and Shihan Ken once again breaking it down for us all to digest and learn. Very grateful that such high quality instruction is made available to all for our learning to save our lives against possible threat. I've noticed that Filipino systems typically take a "self offense " position. Defense, is the "other guys problem" they say.
Professor David and Shihan Ken are two of the best at what they do.
Much love & respect . Ous.

    Excellent SIr,
Self offence is both some control of the weapon and counteracting the mind of the attacker!.
Trying our best to attack at the same time, plus the follow-ups. He, the attacker is turned into self-defence mode. The mnindset of attacking the attacker, causing that man some pain!
SImilar things I have learned from getlemen Fairbairn and Sykes, already before the WWII era teaching not to try take away the weapon, just detour it or simply get out of the line of cut or stabbing attack.
With my age, 68, however I would also add some environmental weapons like using our bag, scraf or umbrella to fend off and run away or as you put it, changing the situation from self defence to self offence.
Best regards. Paul, 68, retired instructor of Karate

    Professor david,
I'm from Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. I come from a long line Military ( Marine's) (NYPD) Midtown. I have mastered many forms of Martial Arts /Self Defense, close quarter comabat training. Being from Irish Descent, guys would come up to me and say can you teach me to fight. I said No, Never. If you want to fight I know some boxing gyms you can go to. I have never studied with pads, you didn't even start out with a white belt. You had to be sponsored and and show that you are dedicated, I swept the floors, emptied garbage pails, brought my Kioshi a half lemonade half iced tea. He'd look at me and say you want to work with the intramural session. That was Yellow to Black belts free for all. I never one a tournament, we didn't even attempt. I can entertain people, show some kicks , roundhouses and the audience would oohh and ahh. That's not practical. I have to meet up with you I learned street tactics, real and like you say keep it simple. I thank you and your protege' Kenny, you ae the epitome of grace under fire. I have between 1000 to 2000 followers and share all your classes, unfortunately, I'm a Christian as well and worked closely with Times Square Church, even Pastors are told you have to keep your messages less than 45 minutes, it's probably even shorter, I have to share your videos and they have to be 10 minutes or less. It's a damn shame.

Thank you for applying the mindset of JKD principles..Attack the Attack..Stop/Hit.disrupt.move,attack, move, attack, move. If you can run then run..But if you cant run hopefully you can find an equalizer; if those fail or not possible, then this. It all takes lots of practice, mainly the fear factor cause blades are seriously scary; hopefully your training will kick in if or when such an situation arises.

You're street Guy's, surely you know you only feel a Knife or cutting implement, never see it. I've been in 3 Bladed conflicts, and I never saw the Blade. I think you guys do a great job at teaching self-defence, but I disagree with this constant visible threatening position. My experience now is to assume every attacker has a Knife, it's pretty standard that they're all armed and proceed accordingly. In only one attack, I stood to allow my friends to escape as it was myself and another Guy with no training and a Girl, walking home from work in daylight, tried to escape but they pursued and as it started over them throwing half house Bricks they had it seemed stupid if we all run and trusted to luck. So I ended up facing the two of them, and one was clearly armed with a steel pen, as soon as he went for that and moved I hit them. I still think I did the only thing we could, but I ended up facing very stiff charges, The Cops don't care, about right or wrong, just who can they charge and with what after that it's down to the courts, job done. I finally got off thanks to witnesses coming forward on my behalf, but it nearly cost me a lot of cash and my profession, and it never went away.

Hey, on the street anything goes, and this technique focuses on self-defense not fighting, or knife fighting. That is why you need to know and try to make this about self-defense, yet still practicing self offense. Cheers.

Thanks for the advice, but I was situationally aware, and at a work function, in a conference center for engineers. when I got the worst wound severing my Thumb.. I survived two years of Gangs waiting to prey on us! As we left Night College, 4 nights a week, It was a rough Area. Now I'm old and Disabled, they see me as an easy Target? They think. I was simply pointing out that when a real Knife attack occurs you rarely see a blade only feel them! They are too easy to conceal.

@@iancooll12 you have to see it before the brain can process it and the body to react to it naturally.
The only way to see it is to "have a focused center" say the ancient masters, simplified, the meaning lost in translation, is to "focus on the center of opponent to protect your own center.
Remember that the body itself is the Center, so focus Chudan center mass solar plexus area.
In this manner, one can see everything from the top of the opponent's head to the tip of his toes. You can see the shoulder movement, arm movement, hand movement, waist and foot movement of all around you.
      Never cross your arms.
Learn to strike whatever attacks you, learn to strike the hand with ippon nukite.
Learn to focus on the center of all around you with your peripheral vision to cut down on ambush or blindsided attacks.
Learn to stop opponents arm before the elbow leaves their side. If the arm or hand disappears behind them, you can expect a weapon and a lunge.
Use reflections in windows and mirrors to view potential threats around you.
Learn to read people's body language to your own advantage.
Been in many serious situations around the world and these things are life saving. Actually works.
Learn to use human shields. Take the first attacker, cause them pain from behind, drop them or shove them in the path of the next attacker, repeat the process to fight each individual one-on-one. Divide and Conquer.
      Try them for yourself.

@@carsonwood3605 My friend, I grew up in post-war East-end London, one of the roughest areas on the planet, I was friends with relatives of the Kray twins. I started at Judo in and around 1965, then moved to a little Boxing, and back to Shotokan under Ticky Donovan when I could. I then left the UK at the completion of my engineering Qualifications and apprenticeship, the way it used to be done! Then I got back to Shotokan/Ju-Jitsu, at Wong's in Toronto, until they closed. In those days, there was little to none sports in the subject, it was all self-defence, fast attacks disabling your opponent or opponents, both in Judo and Karate, very similar to what Professor James teaches today, which is why I enjoy watching them. As to being aware, if you think you can survive that environment a day, without it, well. I still have a built-in sixth sense at 70. Unfortunately, I now need it again, due to all the ridiculous "Homeless and Druggie encampments" that Trudeau has thrust upon us, this was, a quiet Tourist, Residential and large retirement scale area, now fairly expensive and before this voted the best place in Canada, in the most scenic part of Ontario. I thought my fighting days were over at my age, but now being elderly using a stick to walk, and with two very nice dogs, they think their little gang can catch me out, not so far.
I was only trying to point out that in Blade attacks, that I've either been a part of or seen, you don't get time to see a blade, or in my case, I believe it was a cutthroat razor, a common weapon back in the '70s, it came in as a punch, I was aware of him, even though I was working at an engineering conference, as a young engineer. I blocked what looked like a punch, overhand to my throat/Face area, and after throwing him over my shoulder via the high side hard, I had his wrist bent back to the point of Breaking with what I thought was both thumbs well dug in! It was then I saw the blood spraying out from somewhere, pulled his arm up and kicked him to render him unconscious. I still couldn't see the weapon in all the blood, not what I wanted to happen in front of my Boss and our clients. The second time, was when I had just returned to Canada, into a massive recession, and with my out-of-place accent, I was resented, having just taken a very good paying Job while others were getting laid off. They attacked me, I expected it, and I was ready for them, but I still didn't see what kind of cutting implement it was, I was too busy, and I still have all these scars and in any book I was successful, I walked away. If you really think, any of you, that the weapon is going to be waved about, and you could have done better, good luck. I recently went out, to a local Martial Arts club and took on the Master's protege, with a Knife, he Knew I had it, He knew he was safe and the attack was imminent, I went straight threw him at my age, and he didn't even see the move, He wouldn't believe it, if the master, a 10th Dan wasn't standing watching. while I simulated cutting his throat open, going up and back down, we'd still be there arguing. You feel Knives you rarely see them!! Watch most CCTV knife attacks, they're just the same.
