The trail provides, sometimes not the answers we want but an answer to work with and to lead us along our personal journey. Great attitude and plan for 2024! It’s all a learning curve and not competing against but flowing with the trail, both in nature and in town.
I feel like stopping when I did saved me from a serious injury. Now I gotta get healthy and then start preparing for next year. Thanks for the support!
My last pair of jungle boots wore out in the 1990s. Around 2007 I was working a construction job that required a lot of walking on large sharp rocks. Regular work boots were torn up in less then 6 months and I was in agony. Tried orthodics which worked for a few weeks before they would break. Eventually, I went to Ocean State Job Lot and bought a bunch of surplus USAF combat boots that were on sale. They were the answer. I've worn out three pairs and have 2 pairs left. My podiatrist said that the punji plate made the difference. Now, I'm having knee problems but since I'm retired, I just take it easy. Last August I did Trail Magic on the AT in CT. I had a good time and helped 3 NOBOs, 4 SOBOs, and 5 day hikers. It was a very dry time so the water and Power Ade were helpful. One day hiker came in on the verge of heat exhaustion. A bottle of ice cold water and another of ice cold Power Ade revived him. I was very worried about him. In 1974, at Ft Dragg, our BN CDR was a jerk. He had us do field exercises on a CAT IV day. By mid afternoon the Dustoffs were coming in fast and furious. We had 25 heat strokes and got a new BN CDR. From his air conditioned office he couldn't understand the problem. I put the cases of water and Power Ade in the freezer the night before so that they are half frozen. I had gotten some cheap trekking poles at OSJL years before for my Boy Scouts and brought them. 3 hikers had broken poles so that helped. When you feel better consider a day of trail magic. I hope that you heal fast but don't push it. When I was recovering in WRAMC, an idiot NA pushed me, tearing a muscle in my groin that hurt for years. Thanks for letting your subscribers know how you're doing. Check in every month or when you find something interesting. If I can figure out how to do it I'll post some info on my kits. Have fun. Good Luck, Rick
Thank you for sharing! The folks doing trail magic are awesome and I’ll be doing some later this year. There are a few folks I’ll really be watching so we can meet up and get them drinks and food along the way.
@@TrackingHopper If you really felt better by August, you could SOBO from ME to NY and have a third of the trail done. Next winter NOBO to NY and just be done before August. There is a train station on the AT in NY but it has limited days when the train stops. Good Luck, Rick
I truly enjoyed following your 2023 AT journey. You were the bright spot on the TH-cam dial. Wishing you and your family all the best, and look forward to seeing you next year. Cheers!
I hate it for you man, but I applaud your decision. I hope that you are able to overcome this and return successfully next year. I started section hiking in 2015 with the goal of finishing in 2019, but that didn't happen. Looking to complete my journey this year.
You're super calm and pragmatic about the issues you are going through. You know the problem, you have a plan, and you are set to execute. Loved following you and know this is disappointing, but you'll figure it all out. Looking forward to 2024 and following you again. Thanks for the update, be well 😊
Thank you. It’s been a rollercoaster but life doesn’t always follow the plans you made. Things will get figured out though and I can’t wait to get back on my feet and moving forward again. I truly appreciate the support. Thank you!
So sorry you are having this problem, but there is always next year. Get yourself better is most important for you and your family. If all is good, we'll be here waiting for your next adventure, good luck. Blackritz
What a blessing, and yes it might look that way right now. You were able to train, prepare for, and after a month in trail discover an issue that had been in place and hiding before it became something that perhaps could not have been treated. Now you are building a plan to keep moving forward to be back on trail, healthy, happy, and in a better place to continue to Canada. I am looking forward to following you in the next 11 months and seeing you standing next to an AT sign and putting your foot on the trail.ans heading north.
Thank you so much. I’m looking forward to getting back on track and training. I miss the trail but know by slowing down and getting reset I’ll be better off.
Sorry to hear you had to get off the trail. Like everyone else I think you made the right decision and I’m glad that you are planning to get back on the trail in 2024. That is my goal as well to start my Appalachian thruhike in February or March 2024. I’m dealing with a little bit of foot issues right now and trying to get them under control. Best of luck to you🙌
I hope you’re able to get the foot issues under control and learn what exercises/stretches work for you. Good luck in 2024, maybe I’ll see you out there!
Nothing sadder than a hopper that can't hop! I am so sorry you are not going to be able to continue this year but there is nothing else you can do. You could really see the pain on your face in that last hiking video and there is no way to hike through that. I am so glad you are plowing ahead with plans for 2024 and are willing to bring us all along for the ride. I am looking forward to encouraging over the next 11 months and celebrating your start in '24. Thanks!
G’day Hooper mate, glad you are doing well even if you are not out on the trail. Least you now have a much better understanding of your foot and possibly a way forward and have a very achievable goal I reckon. I know you have the will and fortitude to make the changes to get you back out there. I am for sure not unsubscribing cause I want to see you hike it from Go to Whoa now even more and maybe the shining light is your best mate, Nate maybe able to get out next year?
I'm glad you're sticking around. I always enjoy the positive comments and support!! Nate and I haven't talked yet but if we're both healthy next year I'd love to have him out there with me. When we talked after his injury he said he wouldn't be able to do it in 2024 due to business/family but who knows. Maybe I can talk him into it. ha ha
Hey Hopper, Frank here - no trail name yet. I'm gearing up and planning an early 2024 departure NOBO next year. I'm thinking Feb 25th to March 5th as my launch date from AF. I'll be looking for you next year and hope to catch up w/ you on the trail. Keep on Keeping on man!
Hey Frank! That’s a good timeframe to go. A little before the bubble so you have some time to get out ahead of it. I’m thinking about starting earlier in Feb next year than I did this year but haven’t decided. Gotta get healthy first.
I sticking around hopper I enjoy your channel. I am learning a lot through you. I started section hiking the application trail in 2021 and have made to deep gap NC and like you was sideline by my ankle as well. I am hoping to pick up wear I left off and make to the noc this yr. But as you pass you show me the trail ahead of me in real way witch most TH-camr don't so thank you and get better soon men .
Thank you for the update. You are doing the right thing. I will be looking forward to watching your hike next year. Keep us posted on how you are doing. Sending you good wishes on a full recovery.
You continue to inspire us Hopper! We've followed your trek all the way and are sorry you've had to pause under such circumstances. Can't wait for you to pick it up again in '24, it's a heck of an adventure and this pause will only make you even more determined to beat the A.T next year 👍🏻
Go hopper. You'll be hiking the same year as my husband and I. I have MS and am spending a year in physical therapy to prepare myself. It hurts to move everything ahead but I will succeed just as you will. God Bless and go get well first.😊
Sorry to hear how things played out... But, it's better to hash those things out now, tweak your routine, get a few longer hikes in (once you get the right shoe, insert and orthodontics lined up)... If there's one around look into "The goodfeet store". We will be here when you're back on trail to follow your journey, you truly are a great embassador for the trail and good heated people in general, your approach to this is the right one, sure it's not the way you wanted it to go, but that's life and you're going to make it work out. Side note: WHEN you're getting things ready and getting in some training, we suggest you consider hiking the FTC (Foothills Trail), it's here in SC and a great training trail for the AT.. HYOH and keep tracking... Semper Fi
Thank you both!! This has been a real rollercoaster but it’s all part of my journey I guess. Suzannah and I have already talked about doing some additional trails in preparation and that is one I’m thinking about.
It’s a great hike, depending on how you pace yourself it can be done in as little as 3.5 days or 7+ (We’d recommend taking your tie and pushing it out to a week)… lots to see and tail is about as close to AT Vonda’s they come. If we can help in any way, you have our contact information and we’ll help in any way we can… God speed and hoping for your quick recovery.
Experience is often the best teacher. Now you have another year to gain more and more experience that will help make 2024 even better! Hope you continue to take us along your journey!
While it stinks that you cannot get back on the trail this year, it gives you the time you need to tackle it in 2024. Thank you for sharing. I look forward to the next update. Peace and Safe Travels.
So sorry you are going through all of this. I'll still lurk in the shadows, waiting for your inevitable comeback. You've got this! Maybe I'll see you out there next year.
Hopper, so sorry to hear you can't continue this year. But cheers and encouragement as you begin to prepare for 2024. I'm not going anywhere. Will be right here with you for whatever and whenever. Stay safe.
Hey Hopper, I know I will definitely stick around and will look forward to following your adventure next year. Big kudos to you for doing what’s right for you personally. Listening to our bodies is so important. If you had kept going with the medical issues you’ve now found out about, it could have taken you off trail for good. Now you have time to work through the issues and be ready for a successful hike next year. I have no doubt that you’ll do it. It has been a pleasure to meet you and help you with finding the right shoes. While tomorrow is my last day at that store, I will always be happy to help with any questions you may have. You know how to reach me. Cheers, brother!
I real appreciate the assistance the other day. The new shoes are helping but I can tell it’s going to be a long process. It’s awesome you were able to help out other hikers before you head back to the other gig. Good luck and I’ll reach out if I have questions. Take care!
Glad to hear you are getting answers for your foot problems and formulating a plan to avoid future pain! (You are making lemonade!) I look forward to following you in 2024 - heck I might even be there with you! Take care. Thanks for your service! God bless you and your family.
thank goodness no stress fracture. good call on the speedgoats, they got me through PA. i had developed a stress fracture on my 2019 thru hike attempt at the 1100 mile point. just had to convert to a LASH hiker. only have two more states to complete the trail and that will happen in Aug. looking forward to your adventures
Sorry to had to go through that injury. If I was that far I’d be doing LASH as well but being only 115 miles in my he goal is to go back and do it all again.
I'm so happy you didn't go back on with an injury I know a handful of people that have gotten permanent injuries from minor stuff because they didn't stop also since you have time to prepare for next year you should look at those LiteAF packs if your pack gave you any problems the delay is like 2 months to get one right now I don't have one but I wish I did lol
Appreciate this update Hopper and glad for your AT transport system (your feet) to get much needed attention before carrying on in 2024. Will stay subscribed and look forward to your progress...
I’m sorry for your health issues. I hope you can get your feet healthy for life and hiking. You have been very positive about all this. Maybe I’ll see you out there next year. I too had to postpone my hike. Froggs unite. Take care. Heal well. 🐸
Froggs unite!! Ha ha. Life throws things at you and you gotta roll with it sometimes. I went through my anger and frustration phase and am now looking forward to getting healthier, stronger, and moving forward. Good luck on your training and getting out there in 2024!!
I'm sticking around, no question. Still Tracking and looking forward to whatever comes next. Good luck, hang in there and all the best in however it all goes. Jack NYC
@@TrackingHopper, Your Welcome, I had Achilles tendinitis and had to have surgery back in 2021. My orthopedic surgerion had to take a cintemetier of either bone or tendon. So I walk pretty good now. And I wish you the best. I enjoy watching the Maine Cabin Masters on TV 🙂🙂🙂👍👍
You did your very best to resolve the issue with your foot and get back on trail. I look forward to next year and seeing you on the AT going for Mt. Katahdin.
Yeah foot issues are a pain (literally and figuratively). I had similar issues w/that tendon. I am strung tight (like a violin) so a zero drop is not an option, but it took me a lot of trial and error to get it straight. I was never fortunate enough to receive any kind of shoe recommendation os anything along those lines... Part of my issues were caused by a too tight toebox...So make sure you have plenty of space, I've not worn Hokas. I tend to have almost all Merrells and Salmings (that IS spelled correctly, Salomons tend to be narrow & I had to give up wearing them) in case you need to explore other options. I also always wear shoes w/a rock plate. GL !
I love the wide toe box that Altra’s give you and wish other brands had the same thing. Hoka’s aren’t as wide but not that bad. It’ll take some getting used to but I have time.
Best decision ever! 👏 Sending you healing blessings and looking forward to your return. Like me, it sounds like you have an amazing spouse, doctors, and support system! Keep us updated and share any new gear etc. I'm not a gram weenie but I have to be as light as possible (under 20 lbs fully loaded) for my back injury. Maybe this year, you can switch up a few things for lighter stuff. Less weight on your feet, the better. I'm praying for a Feb 2024 start. My birthday, the 19th🤞 Hopefully see you out there.
I have a very good support system and am very thankful for all of them!! Wow, 20lbs fully loaded? My base was about 21 and with 6-days of food and 2L of water I was 33. That’s with 10 degree quilt and warmer clothes for the weather. I was going to swap out after things warmed up which would save me a few additional pounds.
Thank you for sharing your list. I’ll take a look at it today. I didn’t pull the spikes out but judging the weather I’ve seen other go through this year there might have been a few spots where I would have. Some people mailed their cold gear and spikes to Fontanta Dam so they didn’t have to carry them until the Smokies. I carried my stuff.
I just shared your video with my wife. She’s an excellent PT and she said you need to see a specialized PT, not a general PT. And she would recommend a consult with Mike Mullen in Portland.
@@rootsandpeaks Thank you! That's one thing we'll be talking about next week. The podiatrist knew if that I'll need a specialist if this goes to PT. I'll give him the name. That's about a 90-minute drive from where I'm at but I doubt there's anyone closer. Thank you for giving me the name!
Oh wow! First of all I am so impressed that you could pronounce all those crazy words. I'm sorry this hike didn't work out, but I am sure you will get out there 2024. Best of luck!
I'll stick around for sure! I'm very sorry for your foot but it is so painfull when you continue to walk on it. Thanks for the detailed explications. Come back if you dayhike too, let us know how you're doing! Good luck 😊
I’ll be doing more videos and will take everyone along for the training and additional hikes once I get this under control. Thank you for sticking around!
Delay of GA-ME… Stopping when you did was wise…and likely avoided a lot of future issues. Despite the situation not being what you envisioned, I think you learned something important about your feet that will help you greatly when it’s time to take another shot at this. I’ll be coming the other way in late ‘24…hoping our paths cross at some point. 🤓
Hi Hopper. Many thanks for the update and whilst I feel for you having to make the decision not to go back this year it sounds like it's on sound medical advice and will be much better in the long run. Really pleased that you seem to be maintaining your motivation to return next year and I'll look forward to your updates and possible new gear reviews in the interim. God willing your recovery goes to plan and all the best, yours, Bill
Thank you Bill. The short experience I had on the trail made me want to do it even more. It’s going to be hard waiting until next year but it gives me time to get healthy and prepare better.
Tht is great they got you in so fast and are working on fixing it. Just think your oot will hopefully that much stronger and more prepared for hopefully your trip next year. You will still have us to cheer you on when it happens., but right now take the time to get mended and we will still cheer you on. You can do it.
I followed you on the AT last year and really enjoyed it until your feet problems made you stop. I hope that is all healed up and you are able to hike now! I have decided to make an AT thru hike attempt starting at Amicalola Falls on February 21, 2024! I hope you and your family are doing great! Take care.
Thank you for the support! Unfortunately, I'm still dealing with the tendon issues. I pushed a little too hard before I was ready and it set me back quite a bit. I won't be back on a trail for a while and the AT isn't going to happen in 2024 for me. Maybe 2025. It's awesome that you're getting ready to head out and experience the AT. Very excited for you and wish you the best! Take it slow and enjoy the heck out of it!
@@TrackingHopper So sorry to hear about your setback! Injuries and recovery can be so frustrating. I hope you heal fast and can get back out in 2025. Take care.
I have been watching you and I feel your pain. I had to get off trail as well due to an injury that occurred before I started on trail that developed into a stress fracture and tendinitis. It's disappointing but like me doc said, the trail isn't going anywhere. I hope to be there next year starting in February. HOPE all goes well for you! Thanks for videos and you will be back!
I backpack in the white mountains in NH, around the appalachian trail. love the area go every so often but never long distances. most ive done with my gear is 5 miles but i dont do ultralight. Im messed up from military (just wear not war wounds) so i do what i can.
I purpose stayed away from any trail that was a part of the AT. I wanted to all be new. I’m still battling these tendon issues and won’t be going back in 2024. I’m working toward 2025 now.
Definitely sticking around! So sorry you are going though all of this, but your grit, determination and optimistic outlook will get you back on trail! Plus your videos with inserts from your wife were just the best! Looking forward to 2024!
Hi Hopper. I enjoyed your videos before and during your hike. I found your channel while researching gear (tent, pad, etc.) I don’t recall that you discussed your gear once you were on the AT. I’d be interested in a video about how well it worked for you, what you didn’t like, what you would change, etc. I appreciate all the time and effort you put into your videos. Sorry your thru hike ended early.
Lisa, thank you for the comment! I am working on some ideas with health updates and some gear reviews. Things kinda fell behind but things will be coming out in a few weeks. Thank you again for the support!!!
I been wearing Hoka Bondi for about 5 years. I love their shoes. My last shoes were Speedgoats. You are doing the right thing. You will be able to do some testing. Good luck. Please give us a update. 👍👍
Hello Hopper; Very sad to hear about your painful struggle and your disappointing decision. But, you seem to be getting great care to get you back going. I'm very happy for you and optimistic for your success next year! Question: What is your philosophy regarding starting in February? Are you concerned about the colder temps effecting the tendons (etc)? I'm just curious about your reasoning and even if you will be considering a later start date for any other reason. Just curious and interested. (I have significant chronic nerve damage from my back to my toes and have been receiving good care for it. Can I learn from you and your process?) Thank you very much. I'll keep watching and cheering you on! ~Matt in SC.
Hey Matt, thank you for the kind words. I’m he reasoning for Feb is based on giving me enough time to complete it if I go at a slower pace and also a less crowded trail. That gives me about a month or so before the masses really hit the trail. I haven’t thought about that he cold impacting the tendons yet but I guess I learn more this winter. I have actually pushed back the hike to 2025 due to some family things and to give myself more time to heal. My PT process is moving forward but I still don’t have the stability I need to get on a trail. I haven’t done any videos because things seemed to change every week. I’ll drop an update when things settle down a bit and I have a plan.
Dang it! I was living vicariously thru you and you let me down. Lol. Seriously, I hope you get that foot healed up and can get back on the trail next year. You do a good job of explaining and documenting the trail and you seem like a good family guy who leads by example. I will remain subscribed and hope to watch again in 2024. Good luck!
Thank you! I was hoping and praying but it’s just not in the cards this year. There are positives though. I’ll be around to meet my first grandchild. I get to help coach my youngest sons football team. And I get to help my stepson get moved up here to Maine. Oh, and I have a lot of home renovations to work on.
Thank you. I’m still recovering. PT is helping a lot but the mix of being unable to get on uneven ground and some family issues will keep me out of 2024 as well. I’m now working towards 2025.
I know you are heartbroken. Praying you recover well and can achieve your goals. You can always section hike over several years. Still walking the same miles on the AT
Glad you are getting answers. I had similar issues, ended up being calcium deposits in my tendons and foot bones tearing tendons. My resolve was/is vitamin K2-D3, magnesium, apple cider vinegar every day 1 tablespoon. Watch some utubes on these and maybe they can help. Carry on
Sorry to hear that but it’s great that you’ve found something that works for you. I’ve been going down a lot of TH-cam rabbit holes the last few weeks and will add this to the list of things to look in to.
Better to find out 115 miles in than to make it all the way into Pennsylvania before it gives out on you, right? Take care of yourself, keep smiling and keep the dad jokes coming. I'm looking forward to the very special episode of Tracking Hopper where you climb the sign on Katahdin.
I’ve heard from a few folks that had issues at 1,000+ miles and it has to be so dang hard. 115 was tough but just the tip of the iceberg. I can’t wait to film that episode too and am very happy you’re along for the journey.
They put me in Hokka gaviotta’s for home/work and speedboats for hiking both with green superfeet insoles. Has worked well for 1 1/5 years now until I started wearing my none hokka winter boots ( Merrill Moab’s) oops. I feel your pain as last year cost me through hiking the NCT in Michigan. Good luck
@@TrackingHopper had pt for about 7 months and was able to hike late summer/fall. Feet felt great until I started wearing the Moab’s to work outside this winter, now some pain but stretching & religiously wearing the gaviottas for work and home so we’ve been able to start day hiking to prep for a weekend outing in late April. Speedboats are working for day hikes with little to no pain. Good luck and you’ll get there. Looking forward to any updates.
It sounds like you and I suffer from the same problem. My podiatrist gave me 2 weeks of steroids and showed me some different stretches. I had been stretching only the calf muscle. I have started stretching my Achilles tendon. The pain is not gone but it is tolerable.
That’s great that your doc found something that’s helping you. Unfortunately my podiatrist just got Covid and my next appointments is now a month down the road. I’ll be trying over the next week to work with his team to find the next step for me. My pain hasn’t really subsided when I’m walking so I need something different than what we’ve been doing.
Been thinking about this one a few days. Let me first state I am in no way a medical professional but it’s interesting that you served a career in the military. Me too, and when I left I also had some problems with my ankles. Tendentious etc etc. 25 years of in the main wearing boots with good ankle support likely didn’t help build up my ankles. I still hike today but with hiking shoes with more ankle support. It works for me and I’m 57. It sounds like you’re getting good advice and have plenty of time to remedy this problem. On a more serious note, it’s also very possible that it was just your feet complaining about being put into “Crocs” at the end of the day. I did warn you 😂
Maybe it was the children throwing rocks at me. 🤣🤣 I definitely need to strengthen my ankles. I was doing a lot of exercises for my hips and knees using bands but I didn’t focus on the ankles. That’s going to change.
I’m sorry you are having some set backs on your journey towards your goal. I think the best thing you could do is loose 30 pounds and take all that stress off your feet and knees. Every pound off your waist is four off your feet and knees. It’s not easy, if it was everyone would be skinny. Use this set back to motivate a larger improvement in your health and wellness
Just met the Dr again yesterday. He says I’m doing better than he though I would be but it’s not that great in my eyes. Orthotics are helping but making my knees and back hurt. Still no real stability so anything other than flat angers the tendons. I start PT next week and am looking forward to it. Overall things are getting better but I’m not a good patient…because I’m impatient. 😂😂😂 hope you’re doing well.
@@TrackingHopper Doing good other than a back issue (L5-S1), fun times... But getting ready to head out to Montana 15June for 19 days (Montana, Wyoming, SD & ND)... We are going to hike the foothills trail in Mid-July (Luckily we already live in SC, so the sun melting the ground is normal for us). Hopefully things will turn around sooner than later, if we can help in any way, let us know...
Sorry about the back issues. Your trip sounds like it’s going to be awesome!!! Let me know how it goes and how the foothills trail in the July heat is.
I think you’re being wise for sure. I had plantar fasciitis surgery on left foot and Haglunds deformity surgery on right heel. At all possible do not do surgeries. I had mine done in 2020 and I’m still struggling. I hike non stop and I’m on my 4th pair of shoes this year already just trying to not have pain. I’m wanting to do AT in 2024 on my 60th bday. I’m going to bring hiking hard and long distances here at home this year to see how that goes before I know for sure I might be able to handle AT. If you knew the amount of nights I’ve not slept with feet problems since I did those surgeries then you would know why I would practically beg anybody not to go that route. You can get it figured out. For me it was flat foot zero drop altra shoes that are working best for me. Hokas almost killed me. That’s me not someone else. The barefoot is a lot to learn about but helps stretch your tendons better. I can step on a root and work on the bottoms of my feet and keep my hamstrings stretched. Go watch Chase Mountains channel. He is incredible. Look through his videos list. He is very knowledgeable when it comes to problems with knees and feet.
I’ve heard that many foot surgeries end up causing more problems so I want to avoid that. Sorry you had to go through that. I wore Altra Lone Peaks as my everyday shoe and my training shoe for 7-months. Apparently they don’t work for me. Ha ha. You’re right, some things work for some people and not for others. The trick is finding what works for you and it sounds like you’ve done that.
Hey brother, just checking in on you. You were one of my favorite vloggers last year, and was curious if you have any updates for 2024?! I'm headed out on my first thru-hike attempt in late February, thanks to inspiring folks like you.
Hey Flash, it’s so awesome that your thru-hike is just around the corner. I wish you the best. I won’t be going back this year. My tendons haven’t fully healed and I’m still unable to walk on uneven ground for and real distance without pain. My medical team has really stressed stretching, rest, strengthening exercises and staying off of trails. It’s been a rough deal but it is what it is. Will I go back? Yes. I haven’t set a year yet though. The AT is in my mind everyday. I loved my short time on the trail and I want to be out there, just need to get myself to a place where my body is responding right. Good luck man. I’m rooting for you!!
@@TrackingHopper Sorry to hear the news, but as you said, sometimes "it is what it is". Thanks for the vote of confidence...I'm getting pretty excited. All my best for continued healing and strength, and I plan to follow along once you're back out there.
Was hoping for a different outcome for you, but it sounds like the right call. Maybe we'll bump into each other on trail somewhere, although I don't intend to start until March '24, most likely.
Hi Hopper, it's been 10 months and I'm wondering how you are doing my wife is all healed up and we went for a 5 mile hike Saturday it was rough she been idle for too long plus she got RSV a while back and although she not sick it left her lungs week but she pushed her self through I'm very proud of her any way like I said how are you feeling not concerned about you hiking anything big just want to know if you're back on your feet
I’m glad that she’s back out there and pushing herself. Hopefully she continues to improve and get stronger. I’m still off any trails. The tendons were getting better and then I pushed a little too hard which set me back months. I’m on new orthotics now and fingers crossed they help. I don’t know when I’ll go back to the AT but I will go back. Just gotta keep getting stronger and get this inflammation figured out.
Do you think this issue with your foot was there awhile and just not noticeable until you got on trail? Sure do hate this happened, but at least you now know what you are dealing with, and wishing you the best with therapy and custom inserts. Thanks for the update. I for one was wondering what the end result would be. I was thinking stress fractures. You will get back on trail!
It sounds like the issues were creeping up on me. I was having some tenderness over the last month or so before leaving and then it really exploded out there. Luckily no fractures or breaks so this gives me time to heal up, get stronger, lose some weight, and get back out there next year.
Hi. I watched this with interest I was recently I had some severe heel pain. I am also retired veteran, as well as a massage therapist. I think your doctor is telling you some wrong things. Using ice is no longer recommended after the first two or three days. it’s only used to reduce the initial swelling and pain. After that it has been shown to hamper healing. This is kind of old news. It doesn’t seem like he is up-to-date. In addition to that you would be better off with shoes with a much higher drop, 12 mm. Because that actually lessons the stress on that calf and the Achilles tendon so it doesn’t pull as much on the heel. Because it puts your calf into a little more relaxed state. You can Google both of these things. I’m also of the strong opinion that going backpacking for many days is not a good idea wearing lightweight trail runners. Unless maybe you’re 25 years old. They just don’t provide support for that activity. They made for running, not hiking with a heavy weight on your back. These shoe companies spend a lot of time and effort engineering shoes for a specific purpose. Shoes made for backpacking are typically much stiffer. And have good torsional rigidity. Grab the toe of the shoe and heel of the shoe and twist it. If it twists easily, then it’s not good. When you are walking on that uneven ground with a pack, your foot twists left, and right, which puts strain on it. And tires it out.
Putting additional cushioning in the heel compared to the forefoot was done to reduce stress on calf muscles and Achilles tendons, says Jonathan Beverly, author of Your Best Stride and former shoe editor for Runner's World. “In general, a shoe with a higher drop will be easier on the lower leg-foot, ankle, Achilles, calf-while directing more stress to the knees and hips," Beverly says. “A lower-drop shoe will typically spare the knees but put more stress on the lower leg." Of course, everybody’s issues are different. But switching to a hiking shoe with a higher drop certainly helped me.
This is all great info, thank you for sharing. When I filmed this the docs were trying to get me back on trail in a short window. We didn’t know at the time that my tendons were as bad off as we later found out. I’ve been in PT for 4+ months and wearing some inserts. Having a higher rise is benefiting me but I have a long way to go.
Mark, I really appreciate it but unfortunately I had to make the decision not to return to the AT in 2024. Partly due to my tendon issues, but mostly due to family (good stuff). I’m looking at 2025 now, but you got this. There are fantastic people out on the trail so if you don’t find someone to start with, you’ll find someone in a few days. I recommend getting into the Facebook groups for the AT, like the 2024 page. Very open and supportive groups. I hiked with folks between 65-72 years old and they’ve all done very well. I wish you the best.
Unfortunately no. I’m still not able to walk long distances on uneven terrain. I am going back but it’s going to be further down the road than I wanted.
That is a very good question. After he got hurt he said he wouldn’t be able to go in 2024 due to family/business but im going to talk to him about it. Maybe things will change.
The trail provides, sometimes not the answers we want but an answer to work with and to lead us along our personal journey. Great attitude and plan for 2024! It’s all a learning curve and not competing against but flowing with the trail, both in nature and in town.
It’s a journey for sure and mine is taking new paths I didn’t expect. 😂 thanks for the support GBolt!
Watching you handle this with grace and optimism is just incredibly inspiring. Go Hopper go!
Thank you so much!!
@@TrackingHopperHow about 2024.
As heartbreaking as it is, you definitely made the right choice. I'll be looking forward to seeing the updates and your adventure next year!
I feel like stopping when I did saved me from a serious injury. Now I gotta get healthy and then start preparing for next year. Thanks for the support!
wishing you a speedy recovery with your foot. looking forward to your return to the Appalachian trail in 2024.
Thank you!!
Prognosis for next year sounds good! You’ll be the first person I follow in 2024. In the meantime, train well and be happy!
That’s awesome, thank you!!!
I truly enjoyed following your 2023 AT journey. You were the bright spot on the TH-cam dial. Wishing you and your family all the best, and look forward to seeing you next year. Cheers!
Thank you, that’s awesome to hear. If I can get these feet to cooperate I’ll be back!
I hate it for you man, but I applaud your decision. I hope that you are able to overcome this and return successfully next year. I started section hiking in 2015 with the goal of finishing in 2019, but that didn't happen. Looking to complete my journey this year.
Thank you. Wishing you the best and hope you’re able to knock it out this year.
I am sorry to hear so, but you will get it in 2024! I will keep all my fingers crossed 🤞 and you will absolutely keep my support.
Thank you!!
Thank you!
Hoping things are progressing better then expected... I'm sure your eager to get on trail (Any trail) at this point, keep us updated.
Slowly but surely. Two Doc appointments next week to see what the next steps are.
So sorry you are having this problem, but there is always next year. Get yourself better is most important for you and your family. If all is good, we'll be here waiting for your next adventure, good luck. Blackritz
Thank you. Things are progressing…slowly. Ha ha. Still not all that mobile but getting better and hope to start training again by June.
Thanks!
I’m glad you’re sticking around for the journey. Thank you for the support.
I hope you’re able to get back out there pain free and knock some more sections out.
You got this Hopper!
Thank you! Keep kicking butt out there!!
Thank you for the update. You are doing the right thing. I will be looking forward to watching your hike next year. Keep us posted on how you are doing. Sending you good wishes on a full recovery.
Thank you!!
You continue to inspire us Hopper! We've followed your trek all the way and are sorry you've had to pause under such circumstances. Can't wait for you to pick it up again in '24, it's a heck of an adventure and this pause will only make you even more determined to beat the A.T next year 👍🏻
Thanks guys. Hope you’re doing well and we’re looking forward to what the big adventure is this year.
Wise move. There is more than one way and more than one time to experience the Appalachian Trail in all its wonder. 👍
Very true!
Go hopper. You'll be hiking the same year as my husband and I. I have MS and am spending a year in physical therapy to prepare myself. It hurts to move everything ahead but I will succeed just as you will. God Bless and go get well first.😊
You’re an inspiration and it’s awesome to hear that you’re taking on the A.T. with MS. What are you doing for training?
If we can help in any way, you have our contact information and we’ll help in any way we can…
God speed and hoping for your quick recovery.
Experience is often the best teacher. Now you have another year to gain more and more experience that will help make 2024 even better! Hope you continue to take us along your journey!
Couldn't agree more. Experience is awesome and I learned a lot in a short amount of time out there. Looking forward to the next chapter.
I'm sticking with ya! HEAL-RECOVER-RE-TRAIN-HOP BACK ON!! 2024!! keep us updated!
Thank you. I like the plan you've outlined. ha ha
While it stinks that you cannot get back on the trail this year, it gives you the time you need to tackle it in 2024. Thank you for sharing. I look forward to the next update. Peace and Safe Travels.
Definitely. I was hoping for a quick recovery but my body doesn’t want to cooperate. This gives me time to heal up and figure things out.
So sorry you are going through all of this. I'll still lurk in the shadows, waiting for your inevitable comeback. You've got this! Maybe I'll see you out there next year.
Lurking in the shadows. 🤣🤣🤣. I’m happy to have you along for the journey.
Hopper, so sorry to hear you can't continue this year. But cheers and encouragement as you begin to prepare for 2024. I'm not going anywhere. Will be right here with you for whatever and whenever. Stay safe.
Awesome, thank you!!
Looking forward to seeing you in 2024. Be well.
thank you!
Taking care of your body is number one. You’ll come out if this preparation stringer and we are on for the long haul. Cheers!
I sure hope so. The big blessing is that there's not breaks or fractures of anything.
Sad news but glad you have a solid care team helping you get back on the trail!
Thank you. I'm a pretty impatient person so being able to get in to the doctors so quickly has been great.
Best of luck to you 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I hope you have a full recovery.
Thank you
Hey Hopper, I know I will definitely stick around and will look forward to following your adventure next year.
Take care!
We will be sticking with you in your preparation for 2024....looking forward to watching your future videos!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Glad to hear you are getting answers for your foot problems and formulating a plan to avoid future pain! (You are making lemonade!) I look forward to following you in 2024 - heck I might even be there with you! Take care. Thanks for your service! God bless you and your family.
Lemonade for sure! Ha ha. That would be awesome. Are you already planning for next year or a later year?
I'll be waiting. Good luck!
Thank you!
thank goodness no stress fracture. good call on the speedgoats, they got me through PA.
i had developed a stress fracture on my 2019 thru hike attempt at the 1100 mile point. just had to convert to a LASH hiker. only have two more states to complete the trail and that will happen in Aug. looking forward to your adventures
I like my pack but met a few folks with the LiteAF ones and would love to try one out.
Appreciate this update Hopper and glad for your AT transport system (your feet) to get much needed attention before carrying on in 2024. Will stay subscribed and look forward to your progress...
Thank you!
Wishing you a speedy recovery. I know you got this for 2024.
Thanks Heather!
Jack NYC
Thanks Jack. I always appreciate the support!
Good luck getting your feet right so you can get back out on the trail next year. Take care of your feet first and stay warm and get better.
Thanks 👍
@@TrackingHopper, Your Welcome, I had Achilles tendinitis and had to have surgery back in 2021. My orthopedic surgerion had to take a cintemetier of either bone or tendon. So I walk pretty good now. And I wish you the best. I enjoy watching the Maine Cabin Masters on TV 🙂🙂🙂👍👍
You did your very best to resolve the issue with your foot and get back on trail. I look forward to next year and seeing you on the AT going for Mt. Katahdin.
Thank you!!
I think a lot of us will stick around with you :) Awesome work you and your family and your doctors are doing to keep you as well as possible.
Thank you so much!
Maybe we'll see you out there next year.
Maybe!
@@TrackingHopper you're welcome. I want to carry my stuff too and not mess with mail drops. Keep in touch with all of us! Healing blessings 🙌
You’ve got this! 2024 is your year!
Once your feet are ready, come train in the whites with me. We can do a presi-traverse or a pemi-loop.
Thank you! Maybe we’ll get out into the Whites this year (I don’t want to step foot on the AT) and finally hike together.
@@TrackingHopper 100%. We will make it happen once you are feeling good. Take your time. The foot stuff is no joke.
Well I had to write them down and practice them a few times. 😂😂
Yes we will be crossing paths!
So very sorry! I really hope you can get your feet worked out during the rest of 2023 so you can get back out there in 2024. Best of luck to you!
I hope so too, thank you!
Good luck. Take care of yourself and take your time. Do it right. ⚔️🇺🇸
Thank you!
The trail will be there! Get fixed up!!
It will be there.
Tht is great they got you in so fast and are working on fixing it. Just think your oot will hopefully that much stronger and more prepared for hopefully your trip next year. You will still have us to cheer you on when it happens., but right now take the time to get mended and we will still cheer you on. You can do it.
Thank you! The resting part is killing me but I know I need to do it. Hopefully things calm down soon and I can start back on training.
Take care.
Thanks! Good luck on your recovery - I’ll be praying on that. God Bless.
Sorry you’re having to go through this too. It’s hard to deal with but I hope you’re able to get healthy and get back out there next year.
I backpack in the white mountains in NH, around the appalachian trail. love the area go every so often but never long distances. most ive done with my gear is 5 miles but i dont do ultralight. Im messed up from military (just wear not war wounds) so i do what i can.
Sounds like a beautiful area to hike. We visit the Whites sometime but I haven’t hiked there.
@TrackingHopper once you do the whole Appalachian trail you'll have the chance. Im still envious.
Thank you so much!! The fam will make more cameos as things go on.
Sorry to hear this but I think it is a great decision to POSTPONE not cancel your hike. Good luck my friend.
Thanks guys. It was way to early to call it off for good. Life happens but for now and the foreseeable future I'm shooting for 2024 and a thru hike.
I will definitely be sticking around 👍
Awesome thank you!
Good luck Hopper!
Thank you!
I share your pain. Operation on my left foot in May. Going stir-crazy.
Oh no. What issues are they going to fix?
I’ve heard a lot of good things about Hoka and I’m really hoping that the orthotics help out too.
I’ll be testing everything out and doing updates.
Good luck to you Hopper. I’m still Tracking. Will be watching for updates. 😊
Awesome! Thank you!
Alqays enjoy your vids Hopper! You're the man! Good luck next year. You made the right decision pushing till next year. Best of luck brother!
I appreciate that!
I hope you heal quickly and am looking forward to seeing you prepare and get back out there next year!🙏🏼
Thank you!!
Dude...heart breaking. It is evident to Oatmeal and I that you are tough as nails for driving on as far as you did. 2024 sir...2024.
Thank you. I’m still recovering. PT is helping a lot but the mix of being unable to get on uneven ground and some family issues will keep me out of 2024 as well. I’m now working towards 2025.
Thanks for the update. I hope all goes well with you and that 2024 will be your year!
I hope so too!
I know you are heartbroken. Praying you recover well and can achieve your goals. You can always section hike over several years. Still walking the same miles on the AT
It’s a difficult thing but getting off the trail was the right thing. My goal is 2024 now.
Just checked my schedule…I have time to follow you in 2024! Here’s to your foot health success my friend🍻
Thanks for penciling me in for ‘24😂😂
Hope things are progressing in a positive way... Sending you good vibes
Not as good as hoped. Dr appointment got pushed back a month and still dealing with a lot of pain. It’ll get better but taking longer than hoped.
@@TrackingHopper well damn... Hopefully it will turn for the better, sooner than later. Let us know if we can help you with anything
With you in 2024 mate 👍
Thank you!
Good luck
Oh man, sorry you went through this. It frigging sucks.
Did switching bring back all the pain?
Did you do any exercises, physical therapy?
@@TrackingHopper had pt for about 7 months and was able to hike late summer/fall. Feet felt great until I started wearing the Moab’s to work outside this winter, now some pain but stretching & religiously wearing the gaviottas for work and home so we’ve been able to start day hiking to prep for a weekend outing in late April. Speedboats are working for day hikes with little to no pain. Good luck and you’ll get there. Looking forward to any updates.
That’s great that you’re able to get back out there and hopefully things keep getting better for you.
I definitely need to strengthen my ankles. I was doing a lot of exercises for my hips and knees using bands but I didn’t focus on the ankles. That’s going to change.
@@TrackingHopper yeah, maybe carry a shield next year? 😂
I know I need to drop some pounds. It would help everything out. It’s one of the primary goals moving forward.
How is the recovery situation going? Hope you'll be able to get back out soon, even if for just a bit... Keep us updated
Take it one step at a time and enjoy it!!
Bummer! Custom insole will help a lot. Keep positive!
Fingers crossed!
Was hoping for a different outcome for you, but it sounds like the right call. Maybe we'll bump into each other on trail somewhere, although I don't intend to start until March '24, most likely.
Thanks man, I appreciate it. I have a lot of time to really solidify a starting date but for now I want to go out early Feb. That kay change though.
@@TrackingHopperGreat to hear back from you so soon take it slow and listen to your doctor I'm rooting for you 👍
Do you think this issue with your foot was there awhile and just not noticeable until you got on trail? Sure do hate this happened, but at least you now know what you are dealing with, and wishing you the best with therapy and custom inserts. Thanks for the update. I for one was wondering what the end result would be. I was thinking stress fractures. You will get back on trail!
It sounds like the issues were creeping up on me. I was having some tenderness over the last month or so before leaving and then it really exploded out there. Luckily no fractures or breaks so this gives me time to heal up, get stronger, lose some weight, and get back out there next year.
Very early stages of a plan for 2/24.
Yes, very very early.
Hey you have a plan at least. The trail will always be there
Thank you!
Just checking in to see how your foot is doing?
Very little improvement but heading back to the doc today. Tenosynovitits in two tendons on both feet. Hopefully I get a way forward today.
“A lower-drop shoe will typically spare the knees but put more stress on the lower leg."
Of course, everybody’s issues are different.
Out of curiosity, which shoes did you start out in?
I wore Altra Lone Peak 6s for about 7 month. Wore them as my everyday shoe and for all my training hikes.
I would like to hike with you on the A.T in 2024. I am 69 years old
Mark, I really appreciate it but unfortunately I had to make the decision not to return to the AT in 2024.
@@TrackingHopper okay, Thank you for replying.
You're welcome. Let me know if you have any questions. you can email me at trackinghopper@gmail.com
@@TrackingHopper Thanks
are you hiking the AT 2024?
Unfortunately no. I’m still not able to walk long distances on uneven terrain. I am going back but it’s going to be further down the road than I wanted.
Does this mean you will be hiking with your friend that couldn’t go this year
That is a very good question. After he got hurt he said he wouldn’t be able to go in 2024 due to family/business but im going to talk to him about it. Maybe things will change.
