    If I go and do the Appalachian trail, and I not a particularly large person, is the extra weight and cost of a 2 person tent make up for the extra room over a 1 person?

    • @TrackingHopper

      I think of you can get away with a 1 person tent go for it. I will say that having a little more space is great but it does add ounces.

    Hi Hopper, it's been 10 months and I'm wondering how you are doing my wife is all healed up and we went for a 5 mile hike Saturday it was rough she been idle for too long plus she got RSV a while back and although she not sick it left her lungs week but she pushed her self through I'm very proud of her any way like I said how are you feeling not concerned about you hiking anything big just want to know if you're back on your feet

      I’m glad that she’s back out there and pushing herself. Hopefully she continues to improve and get stronger. I’m still off any trails. The tendons were getting better and then I pushed a little too hard which set me back months. I’m on new orthotics now and fingers crossed they help. I don’t know when I’ll go back to the AT but I will go back. Just gotta keep getting stronger and get this inflammation figured out.

      Thank you for the support! Unfortunately, I'm still dealing with the tendon issues. I pushed a little too hard before I was ready and it set me back quite a bit. Hey Flash, it’s so awesome that your thru-hike is just around the corner. I wish you the best. I won’t be going back this year. My tendons haven’t fully healed and I’m still unable to walk on uneven ground for and real distance without pain. My medical team has really stressed stretching, rest, strengthening exercises and staying off of trails. It’s been a rough deal but it is what it is. Will I go back? Yes. I haven’t set a year yet though. The AT is in my mind everyday. I loved my short time on the trail and I want to be out there, just need to get myself to a place where my body is responding right. Good luck man. I’m rooting for you!!

      I have a need to leave and arrive earlier than others so I didn’t have a space issue. Some folks that rolled in later in the afternoon or early evening had a harder time. I was also starting out in Feb with less people. If you go out in late March with the bubble space I’ll be at a premium.

    Hi. I watched this with interest I was recently I had some severe heel pain. I am also retired veteran, as well as a massage therapist. I think your doctor is telling you some wrong things. Using ice is no longer recommended after the first two or three days. it’s only used to reduce the initial swelling and pain. After that it has been shown to hamper healing. This is kind of old news. It doesn’t seem like he is up-to-date. In addition to that you would be better off with shoes with a much higher drop, 12 mm. Because that actually lessons the stress on that calf and the Achilles tendon so it doesn’t pull as much on the heel. Because it puts your calf into a little more relaxed state. You can Google both of these things. I’m also of the strong opinion that going backpacking for many days is not a good idea wearing lightweight trail runners. Unless maybe you’re 25 years old. They just don’t provide support for that activity. They made for running, not hiking with a heavy weight on your back. These shoe companies spend a lot of time and effort engineering shoes for a specific purpose. Shoes made for backpacking are typically much stiffer. And have good torsional rigidity. Grab the toe of the shoe and heel of the shoe and twist it. If it twists easily, then it’s not good. When you are walking on that uneven ground with a pack, your foot twists left, and right, which puts strain on it. And tires it out.

    • @Dave_Outside
      @Dave_Outside ปีที่แล้ว

      Putting additional cushioning in the heel compared to the forefoot was done to reduce stress on calf muscles and Achilles tendons, says Jonathan Beverly, author of Your Best Stride and former shoe editor for Runner's World. “In general, a shoe with a higher drop will be easier on the lower leg-foot, ankle, Achilles, calf-while directing more stress to the knees and hips," Beverly says. “A lower-drop shoe will typically spare the knees but put more stress on the lower leg." Of course, everybody’s issues are different. But switching to a hiking shoe with a higher drop certainly helped me.

    • @TrackingHopper
      @TrackingHopper ปีที่แล้ว

      This is all great info, thank you for sharing. When I filmed this the docs were trying to get me back on trail in a short window. We didn’t know at the time that my tendons were as bad off as we later found out. I’ve been in PT for 4+ months and wearing some inserts. Having a higher rise is benefiting me but I have a long way to go.

    Interesting video. I started my AT thru hike on 16 Feb 2023 so a couple of weeks ahead of you and finished 18 Jul 2023. You mentioned several times you had more stuff then others and I have to agree with you. From my own experience, you were carrying too much weight. I also noticed you were not carrying a water bottle that was reachable. I carried the same pack and no way could I get to my water bottle without taking my pack off, so it was on my shoulder strap. I did watch all of your videos before posting so I saw at day 19 you got off the trail for good. I’m sorry you got hurt and hope you decided to give the trail another try, but please consider reducing your weight. My base weight before food and water was 12lbs. I had two Smart bottles but only filled one unless I was going through a particular long dry stretch. Remember, a 1L bottle weighs almost 2lbs. As for food, I tried to limit my weight to 1.5 - 2lbs per day and tried to carry only four days worth. There were stretches early on I had to carry five but as I got comfortable on the trail, my max became three days. Best of luck in your future adventures.

    • @TrackingHopper
      @TrackingHopper ปีที่แล้ว

      Congrats on completing the trail, that’s so awesome! I kept the water on the sides because it forces me to slow down, drop my pack, and stop for a few minutes every hour. As for the weight, I ended up being 34lbs with 5-6 days of food and 2 full bottles of water. It was still heavy but not where this video was at. Ha ha. I’ve been working with my podiatrist and physical therapist and trying to get back to where I was pre trail. I have some hip issues that have always caused me some problems and that kinda translated down the legs and into the feet. I did a few hundred miles of prep hikes but as many say, nothing compares to actually being on the AT. I won’t be going back in 2024 because of ongoing tendon problems. But I will be going back. I think about it everyday and miss it. When I do go back I need to be lighter, both physically and gear wise. I also need to wear a mid shoe so I have more ankle support. Thank you so much for the support and advice. It’s truly appreciated.

    • @chaosncheckt9356
      @chaosncheckt9356 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TrackingHopper All good and while dropping that initial weight to 34 was good you were still pretty heavy. You have some great lightweight gear but def too much. As for conditioning, I hear you. I spent time on a treadmill at it’s highest elevation and walked at least an hour a day but that wasn’t enough. I dropped over 60lbs in body weight on the trail and while my pack was light, every time I went into a hostel or hotel my bag exploded and I went through each item. As a AT thru hiker from 2022 told me, if you haven’t touched/used it in three days dump it. As an added note, I was 66 when I started the trail and turned 67 by the time I hit Harper’s Ferry (my goal) and I wanted to finish in under 6-months and I did but even now, months later, I feel my knees and back are just getting back to normal.

      It’s interesting because initially my goal was to do the trail when I turned 50. Then my buddy talked me in to going earlier…and then he got injured and couldn’t go. The way things are going with my feet and home stuff I’ll probably be going back on the 50th like I originally planned. 🤣🤣

You can tell what he did because he didn't bother mentioning his footwear which is probably the most important piece of gear. Another way you can tell us because he has a Garmin. A Garmin isn't needed on the AT It's absurd how much money and space was wasted.

    Great video! I got this tent for me and my girl for long hikes, and just for myself for camping. But I must say, for a thru-hike, if it was just me, its 1,175 grams for the tent and 10 stakes, + 245 grams for a matching tyvek footprint, thats a total of 1,420 grams, plus some added lines and add-ons you are looking at about 1.5 kg for a shelter. Two people can split the weight, but one person, its a bit much for your body. Although truly an epic experience once its set up, its a fantastic tent. But I would go with the x-mid pro 2 here, yes its double the price, but for a thru-hike its really needed, its 695 grams for tent and 10 stakes, + 245 grams for a matching tyvek footprint, thats a total of 940 grams, plus some added lines and add-ons you are looking at about 1 kg for a shelter. That half a kilo difference matters.

      I actually switched to the X-Mid Pro 2 before I got on trail. Cut the weight in half. Ended up with more condensation but there are trade offs to everything. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

      Mark, I really appreciate it but unfortunately I had to make the decision not to return to the AT in 2024. Partly due to my tendon issues, but mostly due to family (good stuff). I’m looking at 2025 now, but you got this. There are fantastic people out on the trail so if you don’t find someone to start with, you’ll find someone in a few days. I recommend getting into the Facebook groups for the AT, like the 2024 page. Very open and supportive groups. I hiked with folks between 65-72 years old and they’ve all done very well. I wish you the best.

    Hello Hopper; Very sad to hear about your painful struggle and your disappointing decision. But, you seem to be getting great care to get you back going. I'm very happy for you and optimistic for your success next year! Question: What is your philosophy regarding starting in February? Are you concerned about the colder temps effecting the tendons (etc)? I'm just curious about your reasoning and even if you will be considering a later start date for any other reason. Just curious and interested. (I have significant chronic nerve damage from my back to my toes and have been receiving good care for it. Can I learn from you and your process?) Thank you very much. I'll keep watching and cheering you on! ~Matt in SC.

    • @TrackingHopper
      @TrackingHopper ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Matt, thank you for the kind words. I’m he reasoning for Feb is based on giving me enough time to complete it if I go at a slower pace and also a less crowded trail. That gives me about a month or so before the masses really hit the trail. I haven’t thought about that he cold impacting the tendons yet but I guess I learn more this winter. I have actually pushed back the hike to 2025 due to some family things and to give myself more time to heal. My PT process is moving forward but I still don’t have the stability I need to get on a trail. I haven’t done any videos because things seemed to change every week. I’ll drop an update when things settle down a bit and I have a plan.

      Just met the Dr again yesterday. He says I’m doing better than he though I would be but it’s not that great in my eyes. Orthotics are helping but making my knees and back hurt. Still no real stability so anything other than flat angers the tendons. I start PT next week and am looking forward to it. Overall things are getting better but I’m not a good patient…because I’m impatient. 😂😂😂 hope you’re doing well.

      Unfortunately I had to come off the trail due to an injury so only have about 115-miles of experience with it out there. Also, I switched to the Durston X-mid 2p Pro. Saved me about 20-ounces. It held up on a few windy and rainy nights but did have a bit more condensation than the X-Mid Solid due to being a single wall tent. I saw a few others out there with the same tents and they all had good things to say. I’ll be taking it out with me when I head back in 2024.

      @Tracking Hopper I saw you came off but was hoping to get your feedback with the miles you got with it since there aren't many reviews of the xmid solid. Very heavy load and the overfilled chest pack and waist packs are blocking your vision. You’ll have to be very careful of watching your step. One misstep can ruin a trip. If you want to cut weight, cut out extra clothes and extra camera gear including that giant battery pack. No extra fuel canister. Carry no-soak/cold soak food as back up if canister runs out. If you have lots of experience thru hiking with your heavy set up, great. But people I’ve seen with set ups that heavy tend to bail out, get injured or dump gear in hiker boxes or send stuff home to lighten up. Hope this set up works for you. Good luck.

    Been thinking about this one a few days. Let me first state I am in no way a medical professional but it’s interesting that you served a career in the military. Me too, and when I left I also had some problems with my ankles. Tendentious etc etc. 25 years of in the main wearing boots with good ankle support likely didn’t help build up my ankles. I still hike today but with hiking shoes with more ankle support. It works for me and I’m 57. It sounds like you’re getting good advice and have plenty of time to remedy this problem. On a more serious note, it’s also very possible that it was just your feet complaining about being put into “Crocs” at the end of the day. I did warn you 😂
