    59 KG Motor Find and Melt - Real Trash To Treasure Copper Bush Bullion
    Holes in Bar.
    i believe the holes in the bar were from the copper freezing/solidifying while i was pouring as the holes only appeared on the end of the mold that the copper was poured directly into it would also help if the mold was super heat , no doubt im wrong but this is my guess.

      The holes are similar to surface porosity holes in a weld. You're casting pure copper with no degassing. Copper loves to dissolve hydrogen and oxygen from the air, and as it cools, that hydrogen (and some of the unreacted oxygen) pops back out of solution and causes those voids. Your other bars have porosity as well, I've noticed. Get some anhydrous aluminum chloride and drop it into the bottom of your melt in some sort of graphite vessel. It sublimes, so it'll bubble up through the melt and pull the hydrogen out of solution. It'll deoxidize the cupric oxide floating around in the melt as well and create some aluminum oxide slag, but it won't mix with or contaminate the copper. It's the next best thing to casting in a vacuum chamber.
      Here is a paper on the process:

    I remember our 7th grade metal shop teacher pouring aluminum as part of a demonstration. As soon as it solidified (a few minutes) he dumped it on the floor. He asked who thought it was cool enough to touch. He took a pencil and touched the casting. The pencil immediately caught fire. A great lesson to show that just because the metal is hot enough to hold form, doesn't mean it's cool enough to touch.
    My father was also an industrial arts teacher and warned me of the dangers of hot metals and from the machines in our home wood shop. I never used anything without him either there or teaching me how to use the machine the RIGHT WAY!

    I don't know if anyone else knew about this but about 6 weeks ago the failed Melbourne Printing Museum had its contents put up for auction by Gollant Auctions in Footscray. Anyway, the bidding was fierce and I couldn't afford most of what was offered but I did secure a galley cabinet full of 170kgs of lead fonts in a cabinet, only to discover that there was a second cabinet in that one lot with a further 297kgs of lead spacers (called furniture by printers). So, it cost me $350 to win the auctions plus about $70 in fuel but, I sold the lead for over $600. Anyway, just thought I'd share as there's money to be made in Australia from scrap.

Since melting all those metals can’t be that profitable in today’s spot prices. When you factor in your labor & material costs. Having a shelf full of shiny brass & cooper in coin or bullion also makes for great conversation piece. It also gives out a grin of satisfaction in illusion in one’s mind that i’m rich!

    Back when I did casting work I found copper was tricky to cast without holes, Molds needed to be very hot, and I think tapping the mold seconds after pouring helped fill them. It was a fine line :)

    Nicely done!! Hey Bigstack, I had my first melt last night. A 6.3 pound and a 5.1 pound Brass bars, and a 2.2 pound aluminum bar. they came out great!!! But.... while taking a short video of my work, I chose to stack on a stool and slowly spin them around, so the sunlight would glisten off them. at the last turn they fell off the and my aluminum bar broke in half.

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bugger oh well at least the other two bars are complete😁. I actually just bought a spinning turntable off eBay to show off my final results but it probably won’t be here for a month🤷🏻‍♂️. Feel free to send me the link to the video on my email or send a few pics to my email🤔👍🏻.

    The white metal looks like die cast metal. An alloy made out of zinc, aluminium and copper. Used a lot for making toy cars.

    • @Pennsyltucky84
      @Pennsyltucky84 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Die casting is a process. There's some junk called 'pot metal' that's a mix of different metals.
      Die cast toys are usually steel.
