HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

And we’re back again for another scrapyard salvage. On the way Into town I thought I would stop and grab something that I haven’t done before from the scrap yard, so a welder is today’s melt. It was found in a puddle & a little bit crushed but that doesn’t matter at all to me. Now Sit back relax and I hope you enjoy today’s video. I love the many nuances of your videos. The melts of course, snack time with the boys, trips to the scrapyard, "finding" food in unusual spots, the ice melt and smash, the boot kick and festive sock reveal with a proper toast after a successful melt, and the overall setup of the garage. Has a very "fallout" kind of vibe to it if that makes sense. One of my favorite channels on youtube for sure.

The "Holes" are forming when you pour the molten copper. The air is been driven in and under the molten metal that is already in the mold. Then it expands to make the holes you see. Unfortunately the air can't escape through the molten copper fast enough before the copper solidifies. If you could keep the copper hot enough so that the air could escape, or vibrate the air out while pouring the copper you would probably get a cleaner result.
Also if you watch the pour again you will see that the air forms directly under the area that you are pouring the copper. You moved the pour around alot and that is what caused the area with holes to be so large. Try keeping to one spot as a test in one of your future pours and you might see a smaller area with these holes.

@Cameron Lichtenstein I was thinking the same thing but “dirty” molds could be a contributing factor as well as the air being forced into the molten copper as it’s poured
I've been watching this channel for a while now, and I was wondering why I like it... I mean it's literally the same thing every single time and there's no commentary... but that's it right? he's not trying to fill our head with breaking news, opinions, politics, or any of the rest of the bullshit we get from everywhere else! He does his thing, consistently (which means he probably enjoys it and the videos are a window on his hobby not like most channels) and yeah... it's quiet, relaxing, I get to vicariously feel like I'm a pro smelter when I really know nothing about it. Anyway cheers for all the videos mate, it's much appreciated here!
Watching something that is familiar is very relaxing. That’s why people tend to put on their favorite movies/music when they’re scared, stressed or panicking. That’s also why chillhop all sounds very similar.
You like it because it is putting something in order, or making it like new again.

The flux they use in a welder to attach the thermals is probably the reason the holes was in your copper, still a nice piece..

I’m still curious: how does the price you PAY for your scrap metal compare to the value of what you salvage? It would help those of us interested in melting decide if investing in the tools would pay off in a given amount of time. And accepting the labor involved, which you kindly show us.
I know this is an 11 month old comment, but I just watched this video today! I don’t think this is a very lucrative hobby. If you’re looking to sell copper it would be better to just salvage and strip it first. Melting it just costs you money in propane and time but won’t make the copper more valuable to a scrap buyer. This is a labor of love I believe. TH-cam is our man’s money maker. He figured out how to get paid to do what he loves!

Awesome video. Love the longer videos, especially when you tear things apart in more detail. Very nice addition to the stack. The bars look great. I have one question for you. The vent hose you use when sanding and polishing, how do you have it set up? What I mean is does it go through a filter or something so you can filter out the metals for collection to melt later? You never show what you do with it. Once you showed taking it down but not everything associated with it. Have a great day and thank you for sharing.

I suggested that a while ago, but it's much more complex than that. There are numerous causes for porosity. There are whole specialties that deal with this. Mostly in his case, it seems to be impurities in the particular metal he is melting. A simple vibrator may not do much. A lot of it has to do with unexpected hydrogen, nitrogen, or oxygen. Also, the amount of dirt and random elements seems to contribute. Water is the easiest to get rid of.

Boubles form when liquid hot metal hit some impurities in the graphite layer you use. Maybe there are some silicates that vaporize judging by the colour on the mould. You should show us how do you prepare the mould to be certain about this
