    HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
    I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

    Hey guys n gals how are you all? Great I hope🤔 now today I'm not really sure what I'm melting down but that's half the fun of pulling these pieces apart as you never know what to expect but I saw it at the scrapyard it was very heavy and I thought it'll be a fun little project. Almost 5 kg of metal to add to the stack so very happy with the end result. Now I did stamp the bar incorrectly but you'll see that in the video. Ok it's time to sit back enjoy the extra long video today and I will see all you sensational subs next Friday. And as always have a happy safe weekend😀👋🏻

    Hey there
    bigstackD Casting, thats a very high power inverter, those IGBT (Insulated gate bipolar transistore) blocks & capacitors If they work which they probably do are worth a small fortune, the logc boards often blow on these but the main switching gear survives, i used to love taring down or fixing things like this but my hobby has be taken away from me by silly men with clipboards.

    New neighbors had to replace their water heater. Was sitting in their back yard for about a week, and I offered to take care of it for them.
    Pulled 7kg of copper, 5kg of brass, and 4 kg of bronze out of it. Think I'll make a BBQ out of the shell. . .
    Cause of failure? Galvanic corrosion of the thermocouple. Copper, bronze, brass, and steel all in contact at the one spot at the base that has electrical potential.

    I really like these videos, i don't know why. That said seeing the recycling process really makes a point of why reusing comes before recycling. Even when it is totally justified because none of them work anymore, its heartbreaking seeing all those components and parts used just for material when you think about all of the energy, time and cost went into making them. Also how much value, including but not only monetary, is lost when something breaks and can't be repaired so the only option is to salvage it.

    • @capomundial86
      @capomundial86 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Forrest Farris I totally agree, and that's why reducing waste, IE not buying wasteful / obsolescent items , is the first part of the chain.
      IDK, maybe it's just that the gearhead in me get all "lets fix this" every time i see some rusty bucket of bolts so It just breaks my heart seeing machines left to rot to the point they are only worth the salvage.

    Looks like this unit was a variable speed motor controller. Took AC power in on the left, went through a big transformer, rectifiers, and large capacitors to make high voltage DC, then went through an inverter to make variable speed 3-phase AC which output on the right. The rectifier and inverter modules were bolted to the aluminum heat sink. Transformer was on the bottom left, capacitors on the middle right. Several circuit boards controlled the motor speed, power, and enforced protection for overcurrent, overspeed, etc. Control panel looked like it had buttons to manually raise or lower the speed.

      I’ve never ever considered using a Crucible as a mold although I have had a lot of metal freeze in the bottom of a few but basically you’re only looking at a small rounded ingot full of holes and doesn’t look very good at all. Maybe a small Crucible would make a better mold but until my small crucibles are at their end I’ll just leave that for now.

    Watching the aluminum melting,
    reminded me of the last scene in the "Terminator" movie. Also brought back memories from when I was in junior high school, had the chance out of 40 other students to work in our small foundry. We did aluminum ingots. Turnnig them into various art molds. Whole process from shifting the sand , moisture check on sand, ramming the mold, final pour. It was great going into the next class all sweaty.

    Another pleasant morning watching BigstackD melt useless equipment into usable blocks of metal. The Videos make for a good start to a Friday morning ( along with a good cup of coffee) today is the first day in a long time I was able tonwatch the whole video on my front porch without freezing to death or having my coffee cool down to an undrinkable state since Coffee must be consumed hot ( IMO ).
    Hope everyone had a great day!

    When you get the scrap from the scrap yard, do they charge you scrap value or a set value for the stuff you want?

    • @MasterBlaster3545
      @MasterBlaster3545 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They obviously put a percentage mark up to make some profit but he probably gets what he paid for. If the scrap amount in the object is worth $50 then that is probably what he pays. The scrap yard paid $35 and made $15. Stacked probably ends up behind for usage of gas and stuff but makes a killing on Ad revenue. Win win all around.

    • @robertfurlow4230
      @robertfurlow4230 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bigstacked said in his past videos. The scrap yard he goes to gives him the stuff for free. As long as he is not going to sell the metal afterwards. I'm pretty sure this is the deal he has with the scrap yard..

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually Robert your half right, on a local industrial site when I go through the scrap bins my mate is the boss and he lets me take everything for free as long as I melt it down on a future video and keep it in the stack but at the scrapyard I basically pay close to what they buy it for, they look after me as a few of them watch my videos👊🏻😁

    I seem to have an obsession with collecting brass. The idea is to eventually buy a furnace to melt. My mrs takes the piss when I find some brass and say “that’s a nice bit of brass.
    You dismantling that unit and saying the same thing, you’ve gained a subscriber 😂
    As I’m a mechanic and love brass I have a suggestion… you should cast some 10mm sockets out of brass!

    @ 9:58 when you were putting the circuit boards aside, that gold colored object on the one board is a heat sink. Usually made of aluminium or copper. if it isn't screwed in place, simply pry it off to break the adhesive, maybe even heat it slightly with a heat gun first
