  • Amish and Bhavna have once again joined forces, following the tremendous success of their collaborative venture, 'Dharma: Decoding the Epics for a Meaningful Life,' which boasts a remarkable 6 million copies in print. Their latest book, 'Idols: Unearthing the Power of Murti Puja,' serves as a companion volume to 'Dharma'. It explores the profound reasons behind idol worship. Amish is one of the best-selling authors in India, renowned for his works such as the 'Shiva Trilogy' and 'Ram Chandra Series'.
In the latest episode of the ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, the brother-sister duo delves into questions surrounding the enduring practice of idol worship. They unravel the mystery of why people continue to embrace this form of worship despite centuries of violence against it.
Amish and Bhavna also discuss the benefits of bhakti and explore the role of religion in individual lives and society. They ponder whether such worship can guide individuals towards discovering their true purpose and ultimately lead to peace and prosperity.
They also share their views on the ongoing debate over Sanatana Dharma. Amish and Bhavna also talk about the impact of foreign invasions on society and reflect on their own family background, and how it nurtured and shaped their careers as authors.

Despite horrendous Marxist control over Academia, I'm glad that Indian youth are finally getting their knowledge and wisdom on Dharma by such wonderful people..
My story, I was a Western style atheist untill I start reading about my own history and Dharma.. Now I know what Hinduism is all about. I'm a Dharmic Capitalist Hindutva'ite
That's why Left hates popular podcasts because they are giving space to Hindu voices

Reasoning, debate n diverse way to belief is the pillar of Hindus. The philosophy sorrounding the activities we perform is more vivid in this religion.
Leftists have their own agenda. Erase everything from slate of mind of individuals , write their own dictat n make them believe so that resistance to its existence n continuity is not a challenge.

Didn’t know that no new temples were built for centuries in North India. Amazing to understand the possible reasons behind puja ghars in North Indian homes and their role in preserving Hinduism in the face of Islamic influence over centuries.
Thank you Amish and Thank you Smita for getting interesting guests like these.

I always say that south India should thank North Indians that north fought and prevented Islamic invaders go south in force and allowed to protect magnificent temples of south. India many magnificent temples of north and west including Dwarka, Somnath, Kashmir, Delhi, Mathura, Ayodhya...not one left standing. That is why I respect Swaminarayan BAPS who build magnificent Akshardham in Delhi. South , North, East and West Ll Hindus must awake and realize glorious past.

Many Hindus are not aware of Pran Pratishtha. This important spritual ceremony needs to be told to non hindus who treat idol worshippers with contempt.

    • @gbhatia9809
      @gbhatia9809 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

There is a distinction between "worshiping through Idols" and "idol worship". Worshiping through Idols is sanctioned in Sanatan Dharma, whereas Idol Worship is not. Idols are consecrated & installed by recital of hymns & specific prayers (Pran-Pratistha) so that they bestow specific blessings, powers & inspiration of God on the devotees.
Idols per se have no such value - so you find firecrackers with pictures of goddess Laxmi being burst during Diwali, Ganesh idols washed ashore after immersion or torn pictures in the dustbin.
There are many Gods & Goddesses in the Hindu religion because requirement of blessings, power & inspiration are different in different individuals & also vary at different life time of the same individual. A student recites prayers invoking blessings of Saraswati to enhance learning power, a soldier prays before Durga, a ruler before Lord Rama, a craftsman before Lord Vishwakarma & a singer before Saraswati or Mother Sharda - all to acquire excellence for the purpose of their being, their existence in the world - which is their true Dharma. Such prayers have potential to bestow excellence to all segments of the society unlike other religions where one-size fits all.
Traditionally, the eyes of the deity were not fully carved until all rituals were performed. In the modern times, the face of the deity is covered till its installation at designated place with specific hymns & rituals or prayers. Before rituals & prayers, the idol is merely an idol. Afterwards, the God or Goddess is seen as residing within that idol..

Yes no child is born who listens to Ramayan for the first time.. I would sing one old marathi song "कौसल्येचा राम " when I pregnant for the whole 9 months it made me calm... After my son was born he would instantly sleep after listening to that very song..😊

Speak for yourself then. I come from a Punjabi Hindu family and my mother would read Ramayan, Gita, etc during her pregnancy & so did most women in our area. It was considered auspicious and focusing on good samskaras to impart on the child. It's pretty common for us to hold 3 day or even 7 day kirtan & the whole pind would come and listen to chapters of the Ramayan or Gita from start to finish along with music in between. Funnily enough if I can't sleep to this day I listen to Hanuman Chalisa or kirtans on TH-cam. Your child learned what you taught it. Had you taught them Ramayana or Gita in the womb they would've been predisposed to it hence what we call samskara.

Superb Amish and Bhavna ji- on the comparison between western and indian systems. Good explanation on the lineage of change of notions of divinity. It always infuriates me to see western indologists and their obsession with genealogy of the gods in terms of linear time, when these are obviously deities who transcend linear time and even physical limitation of the visible earth sphere. I have tried ‘ writing back’ but I am exhausted by the pervasiveness of the bad faith with which they control our narrative. Happy to listen to this discussion. Like a breath of hope and fresh air.

And my parents and grandparents generation are the one's who have very little knowledge of this topic as there were no podcast who was this accessible.
Please try to bring podcast which can be translated to Hindi Audio.

Yes. The days people have mostly faith. But if we look for dharmic books, real sadhus, rishis they know the actual reason why murtis, temples are actually built. People don't try to read or know about it and they aren't able to understand it's logical essence. 😢. Our Dharma has so much knowledge, our life will be done but we won't be able to read all

Thank you Smita for this excellent and informative podcast. So many gems of Sanatan Dharma were discussed. Yes, there are malpractices in it as well since the practitioners of this and any philosophy are flawed humans. Recognizing those wrongs like casteism and then accepting the weaknesses and then, working to redress or correct them is the path forward. Rejecting an entire rich and wise philosophy is like throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Instead we should reexamine and revise so that our great culture is not lost to the new generations around the world; not just in India. Both the guests are creatively engaged in that very endeavor and I thank them for it.

The Islamic Conquest of India is probably the bloodiest story in history. It is a discouraging tale, for its evident moral is that civilization is a precarious thing, whose delicate complex of order and liberty, culture and peace may at any time be overthrown by barbarians invading from without or multiplying within.

    Hello Smita Ji,
I refrain myself from subscribing, I refrain from writing any comments, but can't hold myself from commenting now..this episode and many like this before on your podcast have been truly amazing and like to thank you and your team for bringing this to us.. The way you interact with your guest shows how well you and your team have prepared for the show. Also the way you interview in a personal sense gives your perspective but does not overpower the guests view is truly remarkable and absolutely enjoyable conversation.. I did not know of you even though u were in the reporting business for decades, but anyways it is really nice to know you through your show... I can keep going on about the show and your way of interviewing but for another time. Keep up the good job and continue to bring personaloties from various section of the society
    Cheers

Caste discrimination is rooted not in religion but culture. Caste was an ancient system of occupational class delineated in Hindu texts that over the years developed into a rigid social hierarchy. The lowest castes, or untouchables, were marginalized and faced persecution. Caste-based discrimination is not intrinsic to Hinduism and should not be thought of as religiously sanctioned. the poorer workers involved in 'unclean' occupations such as sweeping or leather work were historically segregated and banished outside the city limits. Over time, personal cleanliness came to be identified with "purity", and the concept of untouchability eventually spread to the rural areas. Manusmriti text was never implemented as a law code in ancient India. The caste system as it exists today is the result of developments during the rise of the British colonial government in India. The British Raj furthered this development, making rigid caste organisation a central mechanism of administration. By 1860 the British formulated the caste system into their system of governance, granting administrative jobs and senior appointments only to Christians and people belonging to certain castes.

Absolutely and political parties have minted this issue far too long it's time for society to venture out which I think next generation is doing so well..they hardly know there frnds second name... I m sure with time those talking caste will be eliminated or will fissle out from system..coming years are the key to this ews is the way forward.

True!! Perfect understanding. A simple comparison with the European social classes and still how the monarchy works there should clear the picture of who actually came up with the "Casta or chaste" system, which means race.
      - Upper class - clergy, nobles, royals and knights.
      - Middle class - merchants, doctors
      - Lower class - peasants (which is still a slur used today) , serfs or slaves of royals.
There was no mobility between these classes, and was already determined by birth, ( ALL this is historically accurate)
      - the dynamics started to change with the increase in black slave trade.
      - And a new concept of racial superiority took over, which led to persecution and genocides for 100s of years.

A pretty long podcast. Very informative and makes one wear a thinking hat. Appreciate it.
Coming to some points (I have not gone through the podcast completely yet), before I forget, here are a couple which would need a relook.
    1. Satyam bruyat - explanation was off from the original. It is from subhashitani not what tge author mentions.
    2. Pooja room in the house. Maybe being unaware of how things are down in the southern part of India (not south india). We have had pooja rooms in our homes from ages. I still remember my grandfather doing pooja daily in the pooja room. If he were alive, he would be about 150, maybe. So please check it out.

Lord Rama took birth as a human and lived like a human. We prey and look up to him for his divine qualities. Yesterday Modi ji visited a poor family and a old woman who looks to be an illiterate made only one statement addressing Modiji “You are like God” These 4 words are probably the most important words that describe prime minister Modi. This knowledge to this woman can only come from wisdom gained over years of hardship and hard work. Bhagwan Ram took birth as a human and went through many difficulties, fought and defeated evil forces and established good governance in ancient Bharath. What lord Ram did is not too different from what Mr.Modi is doing. Modi ji is born as a human being, grew up with many difficulties, fighting many evil forces who destroyed India for decades and establishing good governance and working for common man. What you are witnessing right now is this punya Purush in action working round the clock to restore balance and to defeat evil people ( asuras / rakshasas ) whose forefathers have been plundering Bharath, destroying its thousands of years of rich heritage and knowledge and exploiting poor for many hundreds of years. In Not too distant future Mr.Narender Modi will be rightfully recognized as another avatar or a sage in long line of sages who kept the longest surviving culture on this planet intact. I salute 🙏🏾 Modi ji.

Sanatan Dharma (Eternal Religion) is the real name of Hindu religion. There is no word Hindu in any Hindu scriptures. In Sanatan Dharma, one-size doesn't fit all. There are many Gods & Goddesses in Sanatan Dharma because requirement of blessings, power & inspiration are different in different individuals & also vary at different life time of the same individual. A student recites prayers invoking blessings of Saraswati, a soldier prays before Durga, a ruler before Lord Rama & a singer before Mother Sharda - all to acquire excellence for the purpose of their being - their existence in the world, which is their true Dharma (Religion). Such prayers have potential to bestow excellence to all segments of society unlike other religions where one size fits all.
In Gita, Krishna finally revealed himself as the divine Vishnu & directly gave sermons to Arjuna about life & duties of an individual emphasizing the principles of creation, preservation & annihilation. It is considered as the real revelation & guidance from God without distortion through intermediary prophets. For this reason Krishna is also called Jagatguru (Teacher of the World)..
Sanatan Dharma combines duties with spirituality. Duties are defined in Gita & other scriptures, Spirituality is in temples & prayers.
In Sanatan Dharma, among the fives senses, visual connect (darshan) to the Divine at temples is given primacy where the idol has been installed with specific rituals (Pran Pratistha) to invoke presence of Deity in the temple giving specific blessings & strength to the devotees. No wonder devotees wait for several hours, even days to get Darshan of their Deity. This peculiarity of Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism) can be facilitated to create massive domestic tourism at imp religious sites generating huge employment & catapulting economy.
In Gita Krishna proclaims that those who revere me with devotion (Bhakti), they are in me and I too am in them. In the Bhagavad Gita (IX. 23-25), Krishna also proclaims that the devotees who worship other deities are in fact worshipping Him; and that those who offer worship to various other deities or natural powers reach the goals they desire. Bhakti (Bhajan, prayers or singing) along with visual connection (Darshan) to God became important part of Hindu religion.
Before war of Mahabharata, even Krishna prayed before Durga to bless him with victory which symbolized that various deities represent specific powers, blessings & inspirations of God which the devotees must seek in the fulfilment of their duties (Dharma).
There is a distinction between "worshiping through Idols" and "idol worship". Idols per se have no such value so we immerse idols.
Klaus L. Klostermaier, former director of Oxford Centre of Hindu Studies, said : “Hinduism has proven much more open than any other religion to new ideas, scientific thought, and social experimentation” & “ It would not be surprising to find Hinduism the dominant religion of the twenty-first century.”
