    I have an alcohol wick candle, but never thought to cook on it - it doesn't throw alot of light, and is pretty tippy, so haven't used it other than testing, needs a gasket to stop leaking. I'll have to retest it 👍

    Cute little kit! Not sure I'd use steel wool though since that can burn (maybe not likely, but why take the chance?). Rock wool insulation (or maybe even fiberglass) might be a good alternative

    • @MIKESWILDWORLD
      @MIKESWILDWORLD  ปีที่แล้ว

      Steel wool is a lot cheaper. I’ve never had any problems. I have used it with my Ferro rod and with a battery. Fascinating watching metal burn.
      I saw my neighbors cars burn to the frame. Nothing left but metal. The wheels had a lot of magnesium in them and once they started the Fire depart couldn’t or wouldn’t put them out. Thanks for watching! 😀

    Honestly, seeing as I'm an avid coffee drinker, drinking 3 cups a day, this would be excellent to have. Instant coffee and regular coffee have different levels of caffeine. Great show as usual Mike!👍🏻😎 I do have a couple questions. What does the steel wool do? Absorb the fuel and produce more heat? I will have to try that. I've made a few similar stoves , but used Perlite pellets. They are small pellets that you use to fill flowe pots. A bag will last you a life time and inexpensive. My other question is what size pan is that? And would you be interested in a small one if i have one? I picked up a couple and thought of you. That was a dandy looking lunch.

    • @MIKESWILDWORLD
      @MIKESWILDWORLD  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Chris!
      As far as I can figure the only thing the steel wool does is creat a baffle holding the fuel in. I tried pouring it out at about 40 degrees it wouldn’t run out. And the screen holds the steel wool.
      I’ve got a few too many pans now but thank you.

    Very pleasant presentation.
    I stopped worrying with the alcohol stive/cups and candles when i got a $8 BRS stove. Stove and 100g butane can fit in my cup along with a sachet of coffee.
    I don't perk, i just put the coffee in the water and boil. The cup is my boiler, so I just let it cool a bit on the rim or add a spash of cool water at the rim. Bottom keeps the coffee warm for 30 minutes.
    My complaint with alch was the wind screen requirements and the stoves kept burning dry before finishing breakfast or dinner. Too much fiddling.

    • @MIKESWILDWORLD
      @MIKESWILDWORLD  ปีที่แล้ว

      Extended Trail cooking is definitely small gas cylinder and my breakdown burner. 👍

      i've got a trail recipe that may do ya a good one. take a snall box of jiffy corn muffin mix, add in some chopped cooked bacon, some dried green onions, a pinch of garlic, salt and pepper, then do the pan fried drop biscuit trick. it's basically old corn pone (johnny/griddle cakes) with a kick. fry an egg or two, or some fresh caught pan roast fish. awesome campfire eats. can easily swap out the savory on the corn cakes for sweet by mixing a handful of rasins, some brown sugar, or other minced dried fruits into the batter before frying. gotta love a jiffy mix...it's about the most versatile product for making easy breads with lots of flexibiity in the recipes. still remember taking jiffy biscuit mix as a kid and making a thick dough (boyscout style) to wrap around smoked sausages my dad would then spit on sticks to slow brown around a campfire. what dough didn't get used up on the sausages was bannock'd on a spare board to toast by the fire.

    If you do some research on Cold handle Fry Pans they are well over 100 years old and once seasoned work as well today as they did for families Way Back In The Day, I'm one when I see a dilapidated old barn by the side of the road say to myself, "If only that barn could tell me it's story, who bult it, how long did it take, what humans and or animals did it provide shelter for," the same goes for your Cold Handle Fry Pan (s), who used them back on the day, what was cooked in them providing nourishment and joy to it's users for it's many decades of life in someone's cabin kitchen, etc. Be & Stay Well my friend.

      So true. Some “cold handle “ type pans where made in the early 1900s. No makers mark don’t help much. I have my mother’s cast iron pan that she got from her mother. I still cook in it.

    With the candle, is it possible to put the flame out part way through? Or does it always have to burn out?

    • @MIKESWILDWORLD
      @MIKESWILDWORLD  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can put it out anytime but you’ll have to store the remaining fuel in another container. That one leaks on it’s side. It needs another O ring in the top cap to seal up.
      Of course, I have 3 other stoves that are full sized like the Trangia and they leak to! Not even designed not to leak. It seems that the one that cost the least, works the best. In this situation only!!
