    This is pure genius. I didn't like the stand not having a stable base. But turning the tin into the base really makes sense. I'm totally blown away by you taking common items and making useful gear. You are spiritually blessed. Thank you James.

    very nice. I really like your informative videos. I just went thru hurricane ian and got hit pretty hard. no power for 3 days. other people complained about no way to cook or make coffee. appears their propane didn't work either. I got out my Sterno/grill combo and made breakfast. they laughed and walked away. by noon they came back and ask to borrow mine. I did. I then got out my twig stove and have been cooking well ever since. power came back on this am. I really enjoyed my little SHTF scenario. kind of sorry to see it go. but with 9 trees down and the loss of 3 outbuildings @ 70+ yrs of age. it's time to run away from the farm. taking the Yorkie and miniature pet goat with me. THANKS FOR ALL YOU TEACH US. IT IS VERY ENJOYABLE LEARNING. THIS LAST WEEK, THOSE SKILLS I HAVE LEARNED THRU YOU AND PRACTICED BECAME USEFUL IN THIS UNEXPECTED CRISIS. WE SHOULD ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR THE UNSEEN CHALLENGES. I WAS PRETTY COMFORTABLE AND ATE WELL. MAYBE A LITTLE BORED. I MISSED MY WAYPOINT SURVIVAL AND PAUL BEGLEY VIDEOS UPDATES. WE ARE ALL GETTING TOO SPOILED OVER THESE COMPUTERS AND EASY WORLD ACCESS. TIME TO CUT THE UMBILICAL CORD. EXCEPT FOR WAYPOINT AND BEGLEY. i MUST TAPER OFF SLOWLY. BE PREPARED.....SEMPER FI....

    James, may I say "wickedly cool" on this project. We have three favourite backups for when an open fire pit is not allowed or inadvisable. One of those backups is folding Esbit-style pocket stoves. They can be true multi-fuel stoves. We have used solid alcohol cubes, bulk gel chaffing dish fuel from a restaurant supply shop, several homemade fuel cubes and assorted liquid alcohol spirit burners, all with great results. People have used these stoves with small twigs and wood scraps, scavenged for free. We are always on the lookout for small burners that will improve the efficiency of our pocket stove cooking. Thank you for posting man. God bless you. We are watching from our retirement hideout on Luzon island in the Republic of the Philippine Islands.

    For those looking for aluminum for the ring insert, and want something thicker than a soda can, I'd reccomend trying a wet petfood can, or a sardines can since these have a high likelihood of being made of aluminum. Some of these may have a BPA liner inside, which you may want to burn off safely outdoors before making your stove. If you have canned food and are uncertain if the can is made of aluminum, just use a magnet to see if it sticks or not, if it doesn't stick then it is aluminum. I believe some brands of vienna sausage also come in an aluminum can.

    • @angusmacgyver3673

      depends on the sardine can, some are steel. moist kitten food can sounds like a good idea for an alcohol stove, small, light, easy to take with, and might fit the stand used in this video. probably take 2 of those kitten food cans and some cotton or fiber fill to hold the alcohol. might also make for a neat/cool video.

      Most brands of Vienna sausages are in aluminum cans.

    • @MatoNupai
      @MatoNupai 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Completely unnecessary. Alcohol is a SUPER CLEAN burning fuel.
      I have an ultimate stove (which I designed) made from bottoms if cans the size of 8.4 ounce Red Bull cans. I have an ultimate stove which has 700 burns on it. My only consern about this project is the amount of fuel it can hold

    • @Eidolon1andOnly
      @Eidolon1andOnly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@angusmacgyver3673 Like I said, using a magnet is the best way to determine if the can is aluminum or not, though I don't think I've ever found a sardine can that was made of steel.

    Talk about a micro stove! Man that thing is little bitty ain't it I guess it's a pretty light too so it really won't put a lot of weight in your pack and it would be great for emergency situations. What an excellent tool for the toolbox, that was pretty clever James thank you so much for showing that. That would also make a nice little project for children that may be getting into Woodcraft. 👍👍👍 .. another cool project .. thanks.
    Problem is that I have just run out of space for another 'project stove / whatever' so I'll just enjoy watching this one.
    Living in a 3rd floor one-bedroom flat (apartment in USA-speak) has it's challenges 🙄. Adding to that, 'gear and stuff' dating back to the late 60's (I don't like throwing away stuff that still does the job) and then one can begin to understand .. 😏.
    Speaking of home-grown alcohol stoves, besides the 'Fancee Feast', the best and most-used little Burners I have are made from 200ml Aluminium Energy Drink Cans.
    1. One Can only (salvaged from a refuse bag at a local riverside recreation park) and some Ceramic / Glass Wool / Fibre Glass (building sites are a good source thereof).
    2. Punch some additional holes in the top around the edge opposite the drinking slot.
    Cut off the top and bottom (at a suitable height .. trial and error will show how much you will need) and remove the rest of the tab fom inside the top.
    3. Fill the top with the Glass Wool / Whatever. Carefully (and slowly to prevent tearing .. slightly 'fluting' the Top Section helps) press the Top Bit into the Bottom Bit.
    4. Done!
    A little folding Tripod made from 2mm SS Bicycle Spokes and Aluminium Ferrules (Barbecue Skewers work too and are often cheaper) completes the setup.
    Once again, another nice little little project .. thanks for sharing.
    Take care ..

    Pretty slick project. I'm a big fan of alcohol stoves. I use a knockoff Trangia stove when I motorcycle camp.
    You're project is very reminiscent of the famous pop (beer) can alcohol stove, but more compact. Could see how this stove setup would be great for backpacking.
    Kinda thinking about doing one just for fun. I think I've got everything but the can already kicking around the garage. Pretty sure I can score a can from work when we run out of WD-40 again. Thanks for the good ideas.

    I love it! It looks easier than my soda can stoves. They want to rip when I marry the tops and bottoms, no matter how carefully I cut and fold the tabs out of the way.

    Would you consider making a comparison video: fuel tabs versus alcohol? Which is best for lightweight, minimalist camping? Measuring cost, weight, volume, efficiency, effectiveness... Thanks again for sharing all your inspired creativity. Thanks also for setting an example of praying before meals and giving credit where credit is due (when passing along other people’s ideas...). God bless!

      We have tested many assorted fuels and burners in Esbit-style folding pocket stoves. A little research shows that high purity ethanol has the most energy per volume/weight of all alcohol fuels. In the Philippines, we were able to obtain ethanol at approximately 95% purity from a young lady selling ingredients for manufacturing cosmetics. In our folding stoves, with assorted burners, this fuel outperformed all other fuels in boil tests. That makes sense because high purity methanol is listed with less energy/pound than ethanol. None of the fuel alcohols, fuel cubes or gel alcohol were as fast as the high-purity liquid alcohols. This also makes sense, the gel fuels and solid cubes have other components in the formula that make the product into a gel or a solid cube. You will see the residue left after the burn on the bottom of your stove. Yes, you can use 70% alcohol/30% water drugstore alcohol in an emergency but it will not produce the same heat as the high purity alcohols. For backpackers wanting to use a spirit burner, the high purity ethanol offers the best performance at the least weight and volume to pack and carry. Hexamine is far superior to solid alcohol cubes and the gel we purchase in bulk for practice with our young troops. Hexamine will store well for long periods but it is super expensive in the Philippines due to shipping and import taxes. We stick with the inexpensive bulk gel fuel for practice with the kids and 95% ethanol for all other purposes. Forget about the laboratory grade near 100% pure ethanol unless you have a budget comparable to NASA. BTW, we use the bulk gel chaffing dish fuel for practice with the kids because it will not spread if a stove is knocked over. Remember that you can not see alcohol burning out in the daylight. Spilled liquid alcohol will rapidly spread but you can not see the flame in daylight conditions. Hope this helps

      @@NewHampshireJack Thanks! Does anyone know the cheapest way to get high purity ethanol in the US?

      @@bryceherrmann1141 I have read there is a product called "EVERCLEAR" that is high-grade drinking alcohol. I believe it is often used for spiking the punch bowl. Other commenters have mentioned dry gas, which I would think is mostly available in colder areas of the USA. You could try industrial supply houses and chemical suppliers. We used to purchase alcohol and castor oil in small drums to manufacture our own fuel for model airplane engines. We were also able to purchase either at decent prices from these sources. I have purchased smaller bottles of alcohol at paint stores in the Philippines I am sure you could do that in the US because the alcohol is used to thin shellac. Remember that denatured alcohol will work but ethanol has a bit more energy. Use what you can find until you get the exact product that you desire.
