@@thecosmicbug It's common sis! My language on this video is to help so please do not take offense. I had to get my point across is all to the ones who needed to hear it! 💕 It's all with love! s.n. you and your locs are beautiful 😍
It used to be Amazon and fashion nova, but when I went through my budgeting app and saw all the waste I was spending my money on it really helped to open my eyes. Thats why people keep talking about having a budget because it also helps tell you where you are spending your money at and if it is worth it to spend your money at those places.
In the early 2000s we were complaining about pop up ads. When those went away, I never imagined how much worse it would become. And while pop up ads were universally hated, people now spend hours watching ads willingly.
@@blueminto7 oh yeah for sure! It’s me, I am people lol I used to jokingly make that comment all the time until I stopped and thought about how it really sounds and what it does to your psyche saying those words.
Oscar Wilde already said it back in the day: “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”
Your videos are one of the reasons I successfully paid off $7000 (yeah…I know. Bad.) of credit card debt in under 10 months. Rice and beans, ramen, no “fun nights out,” limited makeup, etc - but we made it. Now onto the student loans and my car. I’m 27, and my goal is to be debt free by 30. Seeing people drop OVER A GRAND in one shopping trip actually hurts me for them now that I know how hard I had to work to pay-off the cards. Thank you for the reality check! ❤
I heard it's near impossible to get out of student loan debts in US. I owe like $90k to the Australian government but there's no interest, it's just indexed and they recently lowered it to 3%
Yep I got into money instead of stuff even though I secretly do love high end makeup but it's so useless. I got so much into money that I mastered the frugal lifestyle and started doing the math and I will actually be a multi millionaire when I'm a bit older if I can live frugally now and be smart with investments and inheritance. I really want a good life for my children so I'm going to keep living frugally for now.
I spent $149 on a new carpet cleaner with a heat setting because I was thinking about getting new carpet so I saved over a thousand dollars and I'm sure it will be around for years.
That one girl saying she’d rather be “broke and happy than depressed and rich”… but she’s not actually happy. That’s not true happiness hence the need to buy things and spend money in order to feel a rush of dopamine… then it fades, she needs to spend more, and so on… so truthfully, she IS depressed AND broke. So, joke is on you sweetie. Find true happiness. Experiences, not things. ❤
I really hope she finds what she's looking for. I wish her the best but It was a wild statement. I have other videos up where women have said almost the same thing. And it's concerning. We may think it's just words but I know it's deeper for many who say that. I know people who REALLY think JUST like that. They'll buy all these things and say that same statement while financially struggling. I use those clips because this is MANY peoples exact thought process.
right! like if you want to be "broke and happy" you can go broke into therapy! LOL. at least that can give you more meaningful things to pursue than just aimlessly spending your hard earned money!
Good point. Another way to look at it: If she were so happy, why does she need to buy so much stuff that she doesn’t need? What void is she trying to fill?
Also there's so much passive stress in being broke, even if you can make ends meet, when you don't ever have any money left over or in a savings account, you're at least subconsciously super stressed out and it can lead to all kinds of issues. Stress manifests in the body!
My sister complains 24/7 about how they have no money. She’s a stay at home mom and her husband makes more than me and mine combined. They just constantly buy things that they can’t afford like upgrading cars and electronics all the time, eating out every meal etc and she wonders why they’re broke 😂
I believe it. Me and my ex husband both have depression and anxiety and when we both would go through a depression season i remember we went out to eat everyday for two weeks straight and we had one child at that time. And had the nerve to wonder why we were broke. When I’m depressed I try to find ways to make me feel important or happy and he would match my energy and we both do something to feel happy. I’m divorced and in therapy now. When I go through an episode I talk it out to myself and take notes. I also spend time around our children
Former shopping addict here- I found myself buying impulsively when I was feeling my lowest and emptiest. Compulsive spending is an addiction. It offers short term joy but compromises your long term happiness. I overcame it when I dug deeper and asked myself what was I actually missing in my life? Are you unhappy in your relationship or career or are you shopping to escape a problem. Also its so dystopian how social media is basically used to sell things under the guise of getting to know others.
I am a food addict and have several disorders. I shop like that when I’m not exercising daily or traveling. It’s just part of my mess. The only way I make it work is by checking my bills and accounts a lot because my husband never does lol. 😂 I’m Somehow doing okay but I still hate my spending sometimes
This is so right on point! I do this so often. I actually go shopping for things I don’t need because I was sad. I use shopping to escape my personal problems. I really needed this wake up call. Thank you for sharing your story
That's why I am trying to reuse my items. Last time I wanted to buy a blush. But I had an old eyeshadow palette, which I barely used. It has a pretty red, violet and pink. I use it as a blush palette, because I don't think I need a blush, when I have this palette. It also has a pretty gold shadow to use as a highlighter. I don't need an expensive contour, when a cheap eyeshadow has a perfect shade and works just fine. Cheap ass Primark eyeshadow under $1 does a very pretty makeup without much effort, if you like some blink blink. I have just one foundation, one concealer, one highlighter, one face powder and one SPF 50 because I don't think I need more.
They don’t realize that the influencers they see pushing these items received them for free. They get sent these items from the companies, and Sephora has partnerships, so they provide influencers with gift cards to use these items. Lastly, a lot of influencers that have small followings buy this stuff and RETURN IT.
Thats 100% the problem, we see them having all this, we think its normal then we buy it but the rich got it for free while the poor (me) starve to have everything
I just paid off my student loans at 22y/o, making me totally debt-free less than a year after graduating 🥳 thank you for the videos you make!! Our culture is severely lacking in financial education
Money lessons my family has taught me that I always think about before I buy something non-necessity: -if you can't afford to buy it twice, you can't afford it -how many hours did you work to make the money for x item, and is it worth it? -sleep on it, and if you forget abut the item in a couple days, you never really wanted it
When TH-cam beauty gurus were hype, I was a Sephora addict, had a 10-step skincare routine, and wore makeup daily. I bought what they mentioned in their videos. I stopped shopping at Sephora when I saw my beauty insider rewards; I was spending $1000 and more within 3 to 4 months. Money was an issue that stopped this habit, but my skin was another reason. It felt like a never-ending cycle of makeup. Makeup breaking out my skin, I purchased more skincare products to clear my skin, but they were ineffective, and I had to use more foundation. I watched a video of a dermatologist saying that you need to reduce your skincare routine. I've been using serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen. I stopped wearing foundation for five years, and my skin has never looked better. Just stick with the product that works for you. Influencers do not have the same skin type, nor are they dermatologists. Also, I'm saving so much money!
So true! I go see a dermatologist and esthetician. They know WAY more about my skin then anyone online and they give professional opinions on what they have went to school to study. Way cheaper than buying every new item the streets say is "the fix".
I'm very glad I no longer shop at Sephora. I quit that trend a long time ago. Back then, I loved shopping/browsing in store and online...not anymore. It's just a place for impulse shopping for stuff you don't need.
@@SocialSymone Yup! Whenever someone does that finger tapping thing, I already don’t want to watch the rest of the video. People have no originality in videos anymore. Everyone is just imitating whatever the “in” thing is. It’s refreshing when I find people (like you) who have their own way of talking and doing their videos. I don’t have TikTok and I don’t think I have the patience for it. Everything is so fast paced/quick, I don’t know how people get any useful information. I already get annoyed by YT Shorts, when the captions are so quick that I can’t even read them. 😂
Lowkey I think social media is what keeps people broke. You are constantly being bombarded with products, influencers, people looking like they are living a life of happiness, food, promoting digital products/courses, cars, everyone looks flashy, Stanley cups LOL .. yeah are trying keep up with the Joneses. My question is what do the girlies do (in like money) to be constantly doing photoshoots all the time? Because unless you do your own hair, makeup, nails and return clothes, that’s ALOT of money to be spending. I think a lot of them be sleeping with photographers or something. Like I know there are IG models that get paid for photoshoots but idk I have so much questions. 😂
I agree, social media and propaganda have done a number of people. I had it bad for natural hair products at one point in time myself. We can get into deep quickly without recognizing the Overconsumption we are taking place in. I hope we all can be more cautious and invest into our own wealth and funds and not just making everyone else rich 💕
THIS!!!!!! I cannot stress how much leaving social media has made my life so much more peaceful. I became so mindful with my expenses that I became a pain in the ass when it comes to buying clothing, makeup etc, because I'm SO PICKY about the quality of these things and think a lot if I actually need them
People don’t understand a lot of folks get the products for free while you have to pay for it and the Sephora workers push the credit card with that high ass interest rate … I go to Sephora but I use my Rakuten and my cash back card and I buy the stuff I want and wait till it’s sale time to buy my essentials
Okay finally someone mentioning this!! Also notice how they are always traveling around the world, staying in hotels all the time, tropical vacations 24/7 it really makes you wonder! I follow a Ukranian Instagram model who visits a different place every week, it's not normal, also why are they always around the world and never ever going back home, why is no one talking about this topic?! It's a mistery to me, it's weird it's like we all see it but we are under a spell and we never discuss it! And it's concerning because Vice made an interview to a hotel employee saying what happens inside 5 stars hotels, wild rich parties with all sorts of demonic ish going on, who pays for these trips, the makeup and hair, the clothes? Things were going on about Dubai porta potty, probably escorts, they also have OF or Telegram but I have a feeling there is something more sinister to the story...
I'm still using eye shadows from a palette I bought at Sephora.....in 2012 😂 I think a lot of people vastly overestimate how much they will actually USE cosmetics that aren't daily staples like foundation, powder, mascara, etc. It takes years to get through a blush or bronzer, and I wear makeup most days of the week. The overconsumption has gotta go!
Aint nothing wrong with that use it up until it's gone. You would have saved so much money doing this then buying every new eye pilot that has came out since 2012 😂
This was my wake up call 10 or so years ago. I had at least 10 palettes (60 dollar palettes) at the time and I was only using one of them consistently. It’s a sickness and I’m glad I’m over it.
But please because careful because these products do have expiration dates and can give some individuals chemical burns and break outs without precaution
Same!! And let me tell you the lie they tell you that “makeup expires” really only applies to liquid and cream products. Products in powder form, especially eyeshadows, will last you for many many years as long as they are kept in a cool dry place. Also if you periodically sanitize them with an isopropyl alcohol spray and keep your brushes clean, you would not have to worry about any eye infections ever. I say this as a former independent makeup artist. Never had an issue!
I usually don't comment on social media but recently have come to terms with my shopping addiction, I have started a no-buy challenge. Your videos are really helping me stay on track. I watch your videos when ever I feel the urge to shop. Please continue to make videos on over consumption and frivolous spellings. The way the world is set up atm makes it difficult to stay disciplined.
I am so grateful that my videos are helping you and I definitely will. We all have our battles in life,It is good that you are self-aware and willing to make the adjustments that is a huge thing and you should be very proud of yourself. We have been taught to Just keep buying things in our society. And there has not been nearly as much talk about financial literacy and it is consuming a lot of people. You taking accountability means that you are on the right path. You got this 💕💕💕💕
I'm NOT defending the Sephora card, but at least a credit card apr you can just avoid by paying the card off every month. High interest rates on stuff like car loans or student loans seem designed to drain you dry
I’m over here with 20%, dealing with paying off 1,400 off, UNEMPLOYED job searching, after being fired from a contract job and being a Full time grad student. I used to think I was a mess but DAMN 30 % FOR MAKEUP?!?!
It is so REFRESHING to have someone with my mindset and spending habits. I ALWAYS have to remind myself how HIGH EVERYTHING is and how I want to be real rich, not fake rich, meaning HELL NO to spending like crazy.
Im so grateful I kicked my Sephora addiction. I used to literally max out my cc just on makeup. After I got myself out of the hole I realized that my financial future was more important than the retail therapy. It’s possible. Changing my mindset from consuming to actually enjoying more free activities.
I used to work at Sephora, and hated pushing that damn credit card on customers. I think they knew hated it. That's probably why they didn't keep me on after christmas. They literally make the entire shift complaining that we dont have enough sign-ups like its our fault.🙄
I worked at sephora from 2014-2022. I was there when they first came out with the credit card and they repeatedly said it wasn’t going to be a metric😂 what a crock of ish. I never pushed it. I’m not about to influence an uneducated 18 year old to ruin their credit scores for makeuo
I refused to push the credit card. Idc. I left the company a little over a year ago to work waxing brows at benefit and it’s so much better and I feel so much less slimy
The credit card is messed up. I once paid it off, then they charged late fee on it even though it was 0 balanced. I didn’t even know thinking it was paid off and found out when receiving some random calls. I had the pay off the same amount I already paid to pay it off and close the account. I only got it because I wanted an easier process to buy things I always use.
I worked at ulta for a while and got written up because I wouldn't push the credit card. I'd tell people to skip the sign up and not to go in debt for make up. Like this $13 an hour job during college is not my end all be all, sorry... 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ I was gunna give the people the truth
I used to be a big makeup hoarder years ago until i learned the hard way that makeup (and skincare, haircare, perfume, etc) expire. Sitting on all of this stuff just to have it go bad isnt just a huge waste of money. Its a health risk that can lead to rashes, eye infections, and much worse. Im all for people getting things that they like and will actually use but it kills me to see people use items that pose a huge health risk just to make the cost worth it.
“Grow up.” Yass girl! Not just with this but like EVERYTHING. I see folks complaining about their mental health and it’s like…you just said you’re doom scrolling on TikTok for hours…maybe log off?
I have seen a girl the other day on a video with 120 blushes. How? And she was very proud and the viewers were hyping her up because apparently it is a normal collection. I thought i was in the twillight zone!
Even a make up artist doesn't carry that much makeup...there is no way anyone could use up that much blush before it goes bad. This is just so wasteful and bad for the environment
As a former makeup artist, even we do not have that many of one item! There isn’t a need to carry that many. Most of us had products in our kits that multi-task or are tried and true items and customized palettes. When you are lugging your kit around for jobs no one is wanting to haul around excess like that! The whole deal with these influencers is truly a consumer based scam. It’s excess to the highest levels. Very toxic.
I have a shopping problem. I know why too. It's because I am alone and locked away in my dad's house. I'm disabled and can't go out by myself. I am alone 10+ hours a day. I want to stop but it's hard. I do art most of the time but sometimes I get hit by shopping. Now I only by stuff once a week $20 or less and that's progress I'm proud of
lol I also am so fed up with the finger taps. Idk how it started but its just so unappealing to me. Also its kind of unreal how irresponsible it is to spend $1200 on different colors of the same product when you can just save $500 of that and be immediately doing better than a lot of other people, and just get less stuff. Not no stuff, just less stuff. And its more sustainable too!
Thought I was the only one 😂 And I agree! That's emergency fund money, which 49% of Americans DONT HAVE $500. Not saying these women dont but there are NORMAL women who do this same stuff!
I think it originated from asmr videos and when that got more mainstream it sorta bled into more regular tiktoks/videos cause theres a lot of makeup focused asmr content and that way the tiktok girlies get to tag their video as asmr as well (probably) so thats potentially more views
@galepollard5968 I’m waiting for the finger tapping trend to die. Whenever someone does that, it’s NOT soothing to my ears in any way. I immediately want to stop the video. It’s as grating as dragging fingernails on a chalkboard.
You are so good. Just wanted to say, girls, the only “investment” in yourself is education. If you want to spend, get that diploma, it will pay off, Sephora won’t
I work at Sephora….lemme tell you every thing you are saying is true. I have people flooding into my store and buying out everything cuz they saw someone raving about it on tiktok, only to return it the next day…
@@SocialSymone we check the returns and if an item was untouched then we can put it back on the floor! But if it was used even once then we have to mark it as damaged, then those damages get organized into different categories. There are certain items that are eligible for reuse or recycling (which gets handled by the cosmetic company) but plenty do get thrown :(
I saw this comment on another video and I’ve been trying to apply it: “when you see an influencer’s video on social media that’s showing you products tell yourself ‘this is marketing, this is marketing, this marketing’ and stop watching.”
I think next time you can tell how the interest actually works. For example for a 1000 dollar haul, with a 31% interest, it would be 1000 + 310 dollar to give back!! I think people really need to get this in their head
I do go to Sephora pretty often, but I come with 1-2 things I actually need to replace because I’ve used up the entirety of my stock. If I have a bunch of beauty products I don’t use, it’s just clutter and it stresses me tf out!
I was in the make up haul culture so deep back in 2018. I made a rule to myself “unless it pans, I’m not going to buy another product of it” and it really helps.
this video is SO good! i was up to my eyeballs in debt a few years ago (5-7), but almost completely quit "boredom shopping" & now i have in savings what i used to have in debt. it takes willpower but so worth it to climb out of that sinkhole
I'm glad you found the video helpful! It's amazing how small changes can lead to big results. I am so happy for you that YOU made he changes to now have saving and get out of that hole!
@SocialSymone thank you! i still have to watch out to make sure i don't get sucked into consumerism too deep again. you got an instant subscribe from me! keep up videos like this- you're amazing & we need voices like yours!
It didn’t used to be that way. You can get it free in the store and I swear years ago online it just had to be any purchase not $25 amount. I repurchased something I was literally almost out of to get it online but it’s still stupid.
NO, COME HERE! 😂 😂 😂 but in all seriousness I'm glad you have made that adjustment! That would've been a costly road to go down. Glad you put YOU first!
sephora pisses me off so bad. it's even worse in my country. i live in türkiye and they literally don't even give you any gifts on your birthday. only like 10% sale. the worst part is CHILDREN are bullying each other for not using sephora products, mind you they are extremely expensive here. min wage is 17k₺ while a single bottle of water is 7₺. for example one rare blush is 1100₺. fenty foundation is 1420₺. can you imagine earning 17.000 dollars in a month and giving 1100$ or 1420$ for a make up product? yeah these 12yos are bullying each other for not using sephora/fenty/rare make up products. we're so cooked bruh
Thank you for sharing your perspective on the high prices and challenges with makeup in Turkey. I never knew it was so different over there! THAT IS WILD!
@@SocialSymone yeah no inflation is through the roof here. that's why usually europeans and americans come here for inexpensive plastic surgery or vacation while we are fighting for our lives with shitty wages lmao
Girl your videos are fire 🔥 where I come from girls will have their eyelashes, nails, and hair done before they can pay bills. My cousins constantly call me plan, but my bills are paid so idc 🤣
Thank you so much! I appreciate you 💕💕💕 We love a plain girl, Nothing wrong with being normal. Just be true to who you are. I'm plain, basic, boring (to most) etc. Wouldnt have it any other way! You might be all those things but your bills are paid! And if your not in debt and have real assest, even better!!! 💕💕💕💕💕
@@SocialSymone I’m in college at the moment, but I worked my ass off for a full ride. No assets yet, but I’m debt free!! You are the kind of person more people should look up to. Being financially free will always be worth it in the end💕
Influencers aren’t our friends either, not even small influencers. They are all product demonstrators and salespeople; nothing wrong with that but stop calling them “your girl” and acting like y’all are friends being so heavily invested in their personal lives. Your girl doesn’t know you exist or just cares about your money and the views you give her.😂😂😂😂
LOVE THIS!! I've been talking about this for the past seven years, and it's crazy how bad it has gotten. My biggest advice for someone who keeps buying stuff they don't need is to focus on your main essentials and save the rest of your money. People often forget that products, especially beauty products, expire quickly even if they're not opened. Also, store credit cards are a waste. Learning how to utilize a real credit card and build credit is the best way to go, unlike store credit cards, which just encourage more unnecessary purchases. Less is truly more, and I hope more people understand this moving forward because this over consumerism isn’t it.
I don't mind $200 or $1,000 spent at Sephora if the products actually improve your hygiene (skincare/haircare) and if you will use the perfume and makeup everyday, but to own 21 lipsticks, 50 eyeshadow, and 150 nail polishes is stupid. A woman should have no more than 3 makeup looks at most: work, days off and special occasions.
@@blacklightfreakout825 I agree, I tend to spend more for a good quality skincare product that I know works so that I won't have to worry about buying makeup for blemishes that I won't have☺
I just found you and love your videos like this about financial literacy and wake up calls. 🎉 I used to spend 100’s at Saphora and now I don’t go there at all unless something I use runs out. But sometimes I still need a reminder, it keeps me focused because I still struggle with buying clothes 💜 Thank you!
So glad to have you here, WELCOME! and I appreciate your kind words! We all need a reminder from time to time. I get in my feelings too and have to reel it back! I'm glad you are doing what works best for you to not overspend in their. There items are pricey too because they are a luxury retail store so I know many people may accidentally spend more than they wished in there 💜
Thank you for your honesty about this! It's seriously out of control and the fact that people are not feeling like total fools for admitting they are going into debt over buying shit they don't need (and probably already have way too much of) is embarrassing. Some of these people actually seem to be proud of having a problem...what a weird world we live in. I normally wouldn't have much of an opinion on what other people do, but when this behavior is normalized and even encouraged for young viewers we have a bigger problem.
I appreciate you so much for being real and saying it how it is. You have just given me the biggest reality check as I sit here with £1.62 in ny account until pay day in a couple of days, and I was thinking of all the things I was going to buy with that money when it comes in. I'm then broke for the rest of the month and repeat the cycle...this is not self-care, it's self-sabotage.
I’m so glad that phase of my life is over. I used to be obsessed with makeup and bought way more than I could ever use. I really just ended up with a bunch of expired products and money I’ll never get back
God, I fucking needed this video so, so bad. THANK YOU. You have no idea how much I'll be hanging on to this video for dear life as I fight every current (skincare and makeup 😭😭😭) and future adhd-fueled obsessions
Hell no! I HATE this video. I’m a shareholder of LVMH which owns Sephora and this is not good for my future returns sis ! 😂 On a more serious note, thanks for delivering such an important message.
It not what the big influencers/ or small influencers are telling people to do. They just say buy this..They don't really know how bad some people have it with spending and how to make em think different. If they said that, THEY wouldn't get paid much. I'll LIKELY never be sponsored by alot of brands cause i'm too honest but i made this channel to help people and I this effects too many people to just ignore to push products.
For me, it was the haircare products. I have curly hair and I started learning about how to take care of it, but suddenly I needed 10 products that are each $50 and run out in 2 weeks! Not to mention the time lost to the entire routine...
I CAN RELATE! This one one of my reasons I got microlocs. I WAS A PRODUCT JUNKIE! It can be overwhelming when you realize how many products are needed for a hair care routine! I didn't NEED it all but I was looking for "the best" product for my hair and everytime a new on was out that the natural hair community hyped up I wanted to try it. I know have barely any products I use and save soooooo much on hair care!
I have been the person who didn’t have a savings account, or an emergency fund. Well, one day out of the blue, my husband lost his job! We were literally freaking out about how we were going to pay our mortgage and our bills! Thankfully, my in laws helped us out and my husband got a new job a month later. We decided right then to never be in that position ever again. We started saving money and became more responsible with our finances. My husband was able to retire in November and now money is not a worry.
This is one of the biggest reasons why they don’t raise wages. Non-essential industries are booming so why would they raise wages when it seems that people seem to have no problem parting with their money on nonessential items?
Inflation still isn't under control, the fed is trying to get it right but if we get another hike...NORMAL PEOPLE WILL FEEL IT FIRST! this is not the time to be fake rich!
Capitalism propoganda. The idea that workers get rewarded for their good consumption behaviors is ridiculous. We aren’t getting fair wages because it benefits the company and those at the top. But yeah it’s the workers fault we’re getting taken advantage of. Right
What’s sad is that half of the skincare/makeup that they buy are going to be untouched, past expiration or thrown away barely used. They waste so much money on things they might forget about. Believe me I have done it myself, I would forget about a beauty product and then find it but it’s to late to use it. Untouched and money wasted on things.
10:09 FACTS!!!!! And what people don’t realize either is you can literally buy stocks and mutual funds that include these companies and make THEM work (ie. through dividends) for you!!! It’s insane how much influencer culture has such a chokehold over people yet financial literacy is still not widely taught in our schools Edit: Just made it to 11 mins and saw you made the exact point! Love it 😂😂😂
I really am thankful that I stumbled across your page and this video. I had healed my relationship with money and had spent a lot of time off social media and paid off most of my debt and saved a bit. Then I went back on til Tok and had a bad break up and wanted to invest in skincare and makeup as they said "glowing up will help" I spent a lot of the money I saved and realized if I keep going with this pattern I will get myself back into depth. There is an element of guilt and frustration that I feel but I know after watching some de-influencing videos that most people fall prey to this stuff. I am so glad I've come across this stuff as this is a time where I really needed to hear it before I went back to old ways. I also am trying to get my algorithms to adjust to videos like this so I can change my habits.
Fantastic video! I have a ridiculous amount of makeup, very little of it from Sephora mostly from TJMaxx, which charges about a third of what they are charging literally down the hall at Sephora. I have been working on using what I have & have stopped buying palettes…so many colors, many similar and many that I would not use. Thanks for this, new Sub!❤
You are absolutely right! I am one of those who got easily influenced to buy a lot of unnecessary makeup. Neither do I know to use these products very well nor does my skin agree with any of them(other than lip products) You also are very right about the fact that sometimes we end up spending on the wrong things and wonder where the money went. And these things don’t bring any happiness at the end of the day. Only a high when you purchase!
As person with far too big perfume and makeup collection I agree. I am lucky that have a 401k, money for emergencies, HYSA, and money in my savings. Y'all don't need that much.
You tubers like Laura Lee who have rooms dedicated to products and I glamorized that. I would treat myself weekly to Ulta and Sephora...I knew it was out of control when i was approaching Rouge status at Sephora and the time the Ulta associate said "You have $70 in bonus point money to use." The amount of money we neeed to spend just to get huge bonus points is ridiculous! Its the same thing as gambling and comp points earned....
My girl coming in hot again! Hitting us with the facts. You have in fact changed my life and de influenced me on some of the nosense I was mindlessly spending on. Thank you Symone. You're the hero we need
Sephora wasn’t one of my problem areas, but I feel like this topic can also translate well to books and the similar pattern of being influenced or the fast fashion aspect I’ve seen happening with the larger book hauls and the way people also admit they are spending far beyond their means. This year I am changing my own shopping behaviors especially when it comes to books and beauty, and mainly challenging myself to ask what the need is ( like am I buying this curly hair product because I need it or is it because I’m trying to change myself out of insecurities) I’ve also been trying to practice staying grounded and being realistic with a product and what it is intended for instead of placing it on a pedestal for being a “cure” for an uncomfortable feeling. Great video! I learned a lot and it gave me a lot to think about in looking at my own shopping habits.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences! I'm so glad the video resonated with you and making you consider your shopping habits. That is what it was meant to do! ❤️
I really wish people would understand that this all boils down to morals and what you value. If you have to explain to someone that things aren't their value as a human being, their parents have failed them. These are people that value what they value. They're SPIRITUALLY lost.
something i always keep in mind is that just because something is on sale, doesnt mean i need to buy it (especially if i wouldnt buy it otherwise). spending $0 is a real sale!!
I love this girl ! Thank you for telling the truth . My friends are there going in trips and always posting about buying stuff and I’m here like thinking if I should buy a 6 dollar shirt at Walmart ! I think about the economy, the future . I get scared !
I’ve gotten into project panning and low or no buys because I was influenced to buy buy buy and it has taken me a year... no joke to use up just HALF of my collection... that is just sad. I just want to watch a TH-cam video without getting pushed to buy and your Channel is always reminding me why I will not go back to buying or getting things I only NEED!! It’s just sad how our younger generation is falling into the consumerism trap 😞
Does Sephora or another store have you in a chokehold? If so, what are you doing or plan to change? Also what's your phone on? I'm on 90%
Ulta and Amazon had me in a choke hold for a hot minute! It was definitely a toxic relationship 😂.
@@thecosmicbug It's common sis! My language on this video is to help so please do not take offense. I had to get my point across is all to the ones who needed to hear it! 💕 It's all with love!

It used to be Amazon and fashion nova, but when I went through my budgeting app and saw all the waste I was spending my money on it really helped to open my eyes. Thats why people keep talking about having a budget because it also helps tell you where you are spending your money at and if it is worth it to spend your money at those places.
@andreadupuis5263
This is great news! Goodbye Amazon and Fashion Nova, hello savings account! I agree, budgeting helps ALOT!
Social Media was cats and random fun videos now it’s just a bunch of endless commercials and advertisements…
I was just talking to someone about this! The cats playing the pianos 😂 Now look what it's become!
This was the plan the whole time. The cats were in on it lol
That's still my social media. I don't watch influencers. I like to watch calm life, vloggers, day in life, and animal videos that don't push products.
Exact!!!!!!
In the early 2000s we were complaining about pop up ads. When those went away, I never imagined how much worse it would become. And while pop up ads were universally hated, people now spend hours watching ads willingly.
My friend once told me "You get 100% discount on stuff that you don't buy" and i will always think that before getting influenced to buy something
Yes! Save 100%, buy nothing.
BOOM
What 😂😂😂 is Sephora serious? Do they think people are that dumb?😂
Skip the retail therapy and just go to therapy
Therapy is a great option too! The inner works helps more than people think!
Hahah😂❤
This part lol
This is such privileged advice. Therapy is completely unaffordable for the majority of the population.
Therapy isn’t affordable to the vast majority of people
It’s so weird people glorify having a problem. The way they all openly proclaim “I have a problem” like it’s the norm, is so scary.
It is interesting! I don't know if they mean it or not because we can't see the accounts but they DID say it!
They say it to be relatable, but I like to think it's their unconscious screaming for help 😂
I think in some backwards way they think it justifies or excuses their behavior.
@@blueminto7 oh yeah for sure! It’s me, I am people lol I used to jokingly make that comment all the time until I stopped and thought about how it really sounds and what it does to your psyche saying those words.

I'm glad I could help! And congratulations to you on ELIMINATING your debt! that's HUGEEEEEE!
Congratulations! ❤
Good for you! Keep going, you will get there!
I heard it's near impossible to get out of student loan debts in US. I owe like $90k to the Australian government but there's no interest, it's just indexed and they recently lowered it to 3%
Congratulations
Its luxurious to have money in my account.
PREACH! 💜
So, so luxurious! You even walk 🚶♂️ different! 😅
YES!!!!
Ira!!!!
"Influencing each other to be broke"
Let’s be broke 😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂 TRUE!
I spent $800 on a really nice dining table today, plan to have it for years, and these folks are spending that on make up?! Yikes.
You have it for years...that makeup haul life will get em back in there within 2 months sadly..
I spent $149 on a new carpet cleaner with a heat setting because I was thinking about getting new carpet so I saved over a thousand dollars and I'm sure it will be around for years.
There are children with 10-step skin care routines. CHILDREN!! It is ridiculous.
I seen that! I was taken backk! IT'S WILD! 😬
Cause parents suck these days. Just put a two year old in front of an iPad all day and call it a day
Even I don’t have a 10-step skin care routine!!
And unlike these kids I actually need skin care.
I’m 30 and I have a 4 (?) step routine. Wash. Tone. Moisture. Maybe an active like twice a week. And sunscreen. That’s all anyone needs.
LOL. at least that can give you more meaningful things to pursue than just aimlessly spending your hard earned money!
this woman has never actually be broke and no one will convince me otherwise. there is no happiness in being broke, just never ending anxiety
7:13 - i literally never comment on youtube but FINALLY someone mentioned how annoying the finger tapping is 😭
It strucks a nerve EVERYTIME, That "Damn" I said, was from the bottom of my chest! 😂
Ikr! I hate it so much, plus some if the nails are just plain scary.
Those are soooo long sometimes. How does makeup not get into em
I haaaaaaaatttteeeee that too.
Yes!!!
i’m so glad you are talking about this. the girls out here are dumb dumb. having 50k in a savings acct is true self care.
BINGO! ❤️
Hey, you should think about investing that $50k instead of just leaving it all in savings. :)
Somehow doing okay but I still hate my spending sometimes
This is so right on point! I do this so often. I actually go shopping for things I don’t need because I was sad. I use shopping to escape my personal problems. I really needed this wake up call. Thank you for sharing your story

Glad there is women who are flabbergasted on this topic like myself. I can’t believe the $500+ hauls 😭😭
OH YESSS! I'VE BEEN APPALLED! 😂 😂 😂
31.0% interest on the Sephora card is Loan Shark rates. What the whole pay check audacity!
WAYYYY Too high! I agree!
That is INSANE to me!🤦🏽♀️
I can't even use all of my makeup before it expires. Which makes it worse because it's literally like throwing money out the window.
I think they should smaller containers. I just bought the Haus Lab and I wished they had it in a small size for women who don’t use it daily.
@@Girlintheewild totally agree. I always check to see if a travel size is available!
I can't use all the makup I own even before I die, and I'm 38
Right?! I can’t even tell you how long it took me to get through one blush.. well past its expiry date that’s for sure 😅
They don’t realize that the influencers they see pushing these items received them for free. They get sent these items from the companies, and Sephora has partnerships, so they provide influencers with gift cards to use these items. Lastly, a lot of influencers that have small followings buy this stuff and RETURN IT.
This needs to be pinned! They get that stuff for free!
Absolutely. And they also "move" to different places and houses. Why? Because they, too, are getting broke.

Money lessons my family has taught me that I always think about before I buy something non-necessity:
-if you can't afford to buy it twice, you can't afford it
-how many hours did you work to make the money for x item, and is it worth it?
-sleep on it, and if you forget abut the item in a couple days, you never really wanted it
This is a great strategy!
That's not a money lesson that's just crap talk
Yeah. I use vitamin c and moisturiser (with spf) in the morning and tret and moisturiser at night. Skin has never been better.
I'm very glad I no longer shop at Sephora. I quit that trend a long time ago. Back then, I loved shopping/browsing in store and online...not anymore. It's just a place for impulse shopping for stuff you don't need.
I glad you shook that habit! It is very pricey!
7:18 lmfao!!!! The FINGER TAPPING rant got me 😂. Wth is that all about!?!? So annoying

Lmao, ASMR is no longer soothing it's mad annoying 🫠🙄
Omg foreal!🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
@@makeupdoll7413🤔
Girl throw that expired bacteria ridden ish away 😂
You got this 💕💕💕💕
31% APR?!?! STANDARD?! ON MAKE-UP?
My bad credit car loan I was forced to get was only 22%, and that was still disgustingly high.
IT'S OUT OF LINE!
I feel you! I feel like I've found my people too! We are not alone! 😫 What a blessing! I'm with you, I want it in REAL LIFE!
They didn't deserve you! I can't believe they were REALLY MAD! This ends up putting many in REAL DEBT! 😮
Very true! I've seen people get eye infections from their makeup! It's so important to be mindful of the beauty products for our health and safety!
Same. I had 500 lipsticks but then realised I am gone crazy. Thanks I uninstalled all those apps ...and listen to such subs. It's helped
Let’s normalize taking responsibility for our financial health instead of blaming others. 🙂
THIS!!!!
NOT NORMAL! Maybe for a makeup artist but just regular ol people....NAAWWWWWW
Even a make up artist doesn't carry that much makeup...there is no way anyone could use up that much blush before it goes bad. This is just so wasteful and bad for the environment
I have seen influencers with a whole walk-in Closet full of perfume , makeup and fragrances. Like WTH, when do you wear all of those???
Now I only by stuff once a week $20 or less and that's progress I'm proud of
This is so valid. Maybe meet and vet some folks online and built a community that can come to you.
Invest your money in bank so u don't have money easily.
lol I also am so fed up with the finger taps.
I have people flooding into my store and buying out everything cuz they saw someone raving about it on tiktok, only to return it the next day…
HORRIBLE!!!!!! I KNOW IT'S CRAZY WORKING THERE. Do yall throw alot away at your store or do more resales for discounted prices? 🤔
@@SocialSymone we check the returns and if an item was untouched then we can put it back on the floor! But if it was used even once then we have to mark it as damaged, then those damages get organized into different categories. There are certain items that are eligible for reuse or recycling (which gets handled by the cosmetic company) but plenty do get thrown :(
I saw this comment on another video and I’ve been trying to apply it: “when you see an influencer’s video on social media that’s showing you products tell yourself ‘this is marketing, this is marketing, this marketing’ and stop watching.”
this is actually so helpful and it’s shocking the amount of times we forget to talk ourselves out of it
I aways tend to think; if they must try so hard to sell it you, that means there's probably something wrong with it. 🤷♀️
I can't stand clutter either, makes my nerves bad!
I work at the post office facility and when get 1000s of Sephora packages every day!
Sephora git en in a chokehold! I believe you! 😫 Gotta wake em up!
Sephora charging $25 just to get your birthday gift is ridiculous
It didn’t used to be that way. You can get it free in the store and I swear years ago online it just had to be any purchase not $25 amount. I repurchased something I was literally almost out of to get it online but it’s still stupid.

Instantly subscribed because NO LIES WERE TOLD! I am so tired and scared of this over consumption culture. Your commentary makes me feel sane!
sephora pisses me off so bad. it's even worse in my country. i live in türkiye and they literally don't even give you any gifts on your birthday. only like 10% sale. the worst part is CHILDREN are bullying each other for not using sephora products, mind you they are extremely expensive here. min wage is 17k₺ while a single bottle of water is 7₺. for example one rare blush is 1100₺. fenty foundation is 1420₺. can you imagine earning 17.000 dollars in a month and giving 1100$ or 1420$ for a make up product? yeah these 12yos are bullying each other for not using sephora/fenty/rare make up products. we're so cooked bruh
Your girl doesn’t know you exist or just cares about your money and the views you give her.😂😂😂😂
THIS IS TRUE! They are regular people not Jesus!
😂😂😂
It never sat right in my spirit to pay almost $200 at sephora, but only pay only $64 for an oil change (which I need)
I agree!
There items are pricey too because they are a luxury retail store so I know many people may accidentally spend more than they wished in there 💜
Why is "having a problem" becoming a cute and quirky thing now?? 😅
“We tired of the finger tapping!” Yes, we are. We are tired of the finger tapping. 😂😂😂😂 I’m glad someone finally said it.
I'm then broke for the rest of the month and repeat the cycle...this is not self-care, it's self-sabotage.
i’m LOVING your financial and anti influencer content
I’m so glad that phase of my life is over. I used to be obsessed with makeup and bought way more than I could ever use. I really just ended up with a bunch of expired products and money I’ll never get back
I just subscribed because your bluntness sends me 😭
God, I fucking needed this video so, so bad.
On a more serious note, thanks for delivering such an important message.
😂😂😂I watched this video thinking damn why haven’t I invested yet!
What people don’t understand is that if dumb people like this didn’t exist our economy would go into the shitter
This video should go viral
Yes
Love how real you are. I wish I could find more people like you. I even got my 23 year old daughter watching you.
Thank you so much! I am so grateful for your love and support! 💕
@@SocialSymone I need to get in on lockes! I spend so much on Haircare!
It’s insane how much influencer culture has such a chokehold over people yet financial literacy is still not widely taught in our schools
Edit: Just made it to 11 mins and saw you made the exact point! Love it 😂😂😂
I BUY THE STOCKS AND MAY SHOP IN THE STORE BUT I GOTTA GET MINE FIRST EVERY MONTH, SOME HOW SOME WAY! ❤️
Balance ❤️ You can do both and glad you have a 401k etc. Many people don't!
2:03 Girl, that APR literally made me jump!
This video makes me finally feel sane like I'm not the only one who feels this way. Thank you
My girl coming in hot again! Hitting us with the facts. You have in fact changed my life and de influenced me on some of the nosense I was mindlessly spending on.
Thank you Symone. You're the hero we need
This video is brilliant, Symone! Thank you, TH-cam suggested videos!
Ulta is another one of these stores smh
Wow what a great rant. Wishing you to go viral, the message is passionate and superbly delivered
Thank you so much! I am so glad you enjoyed my rant/video. I can get a lil excited sometimes (actually often) 😂
immediate subscribe you ate this up so bad i was thoroughly entertained
Thank you!!! I appreciate your love and support!!!!! 💜 💜 💜 I'm so glad you enjoyed!
WOOHOO preaching girl and I’m here for it!! Giving super facts 🤗
I appreciate you! 💕💕💕 I hope this reaches AT LEAST one person to not go in debt trying to keep up with all these products 😫
I absolutely binged on your personal finance videos and I love your takes on personal finance and overconsumption. Subscribed!
Just discovered you, thank you for for your video! 💚
I’m so happy your channel popped up for me! With each passing year as I get older, I’m getting closer and closer to minimalist.
The only broke I want is a brokerage account.
I LOVE THIS STATEMENT 💕💕💕😍😍😍
I'm so glad I came across your content during my debt free journey 🙏🏽 this is the type of "influence" I'm down for! Thank you!
Saving this for the next time I want to make a dumb purchase.
Please do and come back! I appreciate you!
I love this girl ! Thank you for telling the truth . My friends are there going in trips and always posting about buying stuff and I’m here like thinking if I should buy a 6 dollar shirt at Walmart ! I think about the economy, the future . I get scared !
Thank you , I needed this reality check
You are so welcome! I am so glad it helped! ❤️
I love this channel. It keeps me sane.
I appreciate you for supporting me! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
