  • A year and a half after Pokémon Colosseum, Genius Sonority released Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, a game that supposedly fixes every single issue with its predecessor. Is it true? Does that make XD the BEST Pokémon game then? Or are both GameCube installments definitely not worth the trouble? There's only one way to find out!

    Hope you enjoy the video, and have/had a great April 1st! No tricks here, just Pokémon XD. Speaking of, you would think that after this many hours of playtime, I would get the names of the Purify Chamber and the Battle Bingo right... but no.
    Twitch streams are back, and we are getting close to completing the Gen 3 Living Dex challenge! Join us this weekend for the conclusion at twitch.tv/lyrara_lyra

      So I just checked your site, but you forgot to mention the prizes for completing Mt Battle in XD, which is your choice of Johto starter. Every time you complete 100 battles you can get one, and each one has a special move. Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, or Hydro Cannon. And it's the only way in gen 3 to get the Johto starters with those. And also gives people without Colosseum or Emerald a way to get them, or Emerald but you don't need to finish the national dex first or only finish Mt Battle twice for the two you didn't get.

    I think the beauty of the shadow lugia fight is that in your first playthrough, you're most certainly going to have a full party of non-shadow pokemon by then and when you face lugia, most would use the master ball, but using it is a bait and switch because that makes the actual fight harder since now you don't have a free catch on one of the legendary birds, and shadow lugia will get sent to your pc, so there goes the best shadow pokemon resist in the game. Then, the real challenge starts there: catching all 6 shadow pokemon in a single battle.
    The only shame is the other 3 mons being rhydon tauros and exeggcutor(maybe a reference to high tier mons during the rby days?) Since they aren't too terribly difficult to catch and besides tauros and maybe rhydon, their damage output is carried by shadow moves being super effective on non-shadow mons.

    • @morgastic23
      @morgastic23 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      Yeah they're all Safari Zone Pokémon, pretty strong for gen 1, and I think all used by Prof Oak in the scrapped battle against him. I always considered them a trio themselves because of that.

    • @Dw7freak
      @Dw7freak หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      You should still use the Master Ball on Lugia, you should just have an open slot in your party for it for the Greevil fight. Shadow Lugia is the best tank for that fight, since it takes a quarter damage non-shadow mons take on top of Lugia being a wall in general, and using the Master Ball lets you not waste turns healing it. All of Greevil's mons have much better catch rates than Lugia, so unless you sleep/freeze it and have an excessive amount of ultra/timer balls, it's not really worth wasting that many resources just on Lugia.
      You also don't need to catch all 6 shadow mons in a single battle. You can rematch him until he has no more shadow mons, letting you get more balls if necessary since the birds have really low catch rates. I did it over the course of 2 battles my first time, so it isn't that much of a hassle. As you might be low on balls when you get to Greevil, because of just how many shadow mons are in Citadark Isle, especially the last few that have low catch rates, it might just be faster to beat him to restock than to have to run all the way out then back in.

    I can understand the argument against reusing content from previous games, but if it means that we get a better, more enjoyable experience, I don’t mind so much. Heck, XD and Colosseum reused Pokemon models and animations from Pokemon Stadium, and I don’t think anyone really complained, even if the gen 1 models were showing their age.
    Ironically, many would argue that pre-gen 6 animations were far better than what we started getting from X and Y onwards.

Yeah Stadium animations are pretty but take way too long even the fainting animation takes way too long, combine that with Double battles naturally being longer than regular battles and you have regular trainer battles that drag the game to a halt and then you add to the fact that you have to try and catch trainer's shadow Pokemon as well which slows down things even more than they were before.

    This part I’m going to have to disagree with you on.
    Like, I get why you’re not a fan of the old locations returning. You weren’t a fan of Colosseum (which is perfectly understandable), so you don’t feel any nostalgia for those old locations, but back then, I think most people who bought XD after having already played Colosseum did so because they enjoyed at least _something_ about Colosseum (besides connecting Game Boy Advances to battle each other using the 3D animations, of course) and wanted more of it. For people like me, getting to see these old locations along with new ones was a treat!
    And, like, you overstate how unchanged they are. Sure, places like the Snagem Hideout, Shadow Pokémon Lab, and Agate Village are practically identical, but it does make some sense. Both Team Snagem and Cipher were out of the picture during the gap between games, so why would those locations change significantly? And Agate Village was meant to be a sorta time capsule untouched both by the long-ago desertification of Orre and advances in technology and such; it’s not going to change in just 5 years. But other locations did change substantially. Pyrite has replaced the building Cipher used to use as a base of operations with a new TV broadcasting station. Realgam Tower has changed drastically with the new minigames and battle simulator. And while Mt. Battle is mostly the same, it at least made it less of a chore than in Colosseum for the story mission.
    There’s also Phenac, which-while virtually unchanged as a location from Colosseum-has a pretty cool bit with how each and everyone in the town has been replaced with one of Cipher’s goons in disguise. That was a nice twist!
    And their inclusion is sometimes perfectly sensible if not necessary at times. Like, given that we have to purify Shadow Pokémon still, and the only way to do so until the Purification Chamber is complete is via the Relic Stone in Agate Village, we kinda have to be able to revisit Agate Village. The return of Cipher means that it makes perfect sense for us to have to return to the Shadow Pokémon Lab, since that was once one of their primary bases for major operations. The Mt. Battle game mode has returned, so the location kinda has to be present in the story mode, and the nature of Orre’s traversal system means we basically need to have a reason to go there for the location to be made available, anyways. The same idea goes for Pyrite, Phenac, and Realgam, since they host the three major colosseums in both games. (I kinda wish the Under returned, too, so we could get that BGM again and so that we’d get the Under and Deep Colosseums again.)
    And on top of all of that, there are enough new locations to more than make up for the returning ones. Only the middle of the game features a bunch of returning locations; most of the locations in the first and last parts of the game are completely brand-new. The Lab you start out at, Dr. Kaminko’s lab, Gateon Port, the remains of the S.S. Libre, the Shadow Pokémon Factory, and Citadark Isle are all completely new, as are the new Poké Spots.
    Maybe they could’ve made some additional changes here and there, namely in Phenac and the Shadow Pokémon Lab, but I don’t think their remaining largely identical is a problem. It’s not really any different from how many locations in the Kanto region are practically identical in the Gen II games. Pewter City and Pallet Town in particular have almost no differences between Gens I and II aside from Brock having a new team, and Fuschia City has even less stuff than it did before thanks to the Safari Zone being shut down. Sure, it’s not a perfectly fair comparison since, aside from the Indigo Plateau, all of the Kanto locations in Gen II are technically in the post-game, while the returning locations in XD are visited during the main story mode, and the time that passed between Gens I and II was less than the time that passed between Colosseum and XD, but the point still stands. Especially when we also look at Black 2 and White 2, which is perhaps the most direct comparison one could make since they’re direct sequels that take place in the exact region with new locations added to that same region.
    Just because they’re reusing some assets and locations doesn’t automatically make it lazy.

    something I liked about XD was the limited, peculiar encounters. as well, pretty much every purified Shadow Pokemon has an egg move or a special move it otherwise would never learn. there's a fair few Pokemon you might never use in the I other Gen 3 games that because of when you get them and what moves they get, become valuable team members in XD. I kind of randomly fell in love with Swalot because Gulpin is one of the earliest Shadow Pokemon you can snag, and Swalot ended up being tanky and using Yawn all the time. XD has a lot of good Kanto and Hoenn Pokemon, whereas Colosseum was kind of dominated by exceptionally mediocre Johto Pokemon.
    plus the flexibility of choosing between five eeveelutions allows you more options.
    and then the Pokespots give you nine more options that don't even need to be purified, plus there's in-game trades for three of those, yielding Meditite, Larvitar, and Shuckle. so it's theoretically possible to get Tyranitar and a Pure Power Medicham on your team with some effort. Trapinch being one of the Pokespot encounters means Flygon is a viable team member, which is just fantastic.

    At least you were able to get the Jhoto starters in Colosseum. To get them in XD, you need to complete Mt Battle's 100 floors. Not the outside version like in Colosseum, but the in-game version that you can use for level grinding. When you get to the top, you can pick a single starter that knows the elemental Hyper Beam of their type, which were exclusive to the Kanto starters before this. And what level do you get these starters at? 50? 70? Maybe 100!? You can get a Cyndaquil, Totodile, or Chikarita at a whopping level... 5........ Level 5! You also need to complete Mt Battle once for each starter. As you need Colosseum to get the legendary cats and Ho-oh, there's no reason to do this challenge except to have the elemental Hyper Beams on more than just the Kanto starters.

    about the cool pokemon bingo and SIM battles, that's so great! i don't know how much of pokemon stadium 2 you've played, but there's actually a side-content thing you can successfully complete, starting from beginner friendly to more intermediate, where there is a classroom that teach you some of the more unusual mechanics of the game. i remember this is where i learned that defense curl boosts the power of rollout on the next turn! things like that. of course, with it being only up to Gen 2, it doesn't have abilities and such. but there are still fun lessons, as well as a library where you can read up on these mechanics too. overall though, i'm glad Gale of Darkness was actually a pretty good upgrade mechanically to coloseum, but it still looks like the poor pacing of the battles kind of takes it down a few points. ashame!

    Yeah, reusing assets is lazy. That's why no Pokémon who has appeared in a game should *ever* appear in another one. And why it was so disappointing to see Kanto in Johto. We've already been there, so there's really no reason for it to still exist.

    • @brianhull2407
      @brianhull2407 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Loving the sarcasm! And yeah, I don’t think it’s lazy for them to reuse the same locations like this. There are enough brand-new locations to make up for it, and we’re still in Orre; would we expect all of these places to just disappear in just 5 years?
      And some either just make perfect sense such that they sorta had to be included (Agate Village is required for purifying Pokémon (at least until the Purification Chambers are finished), and with the return of Cipher, having to return to their old Shadow Pokémon Lab makes perfect sense, and it also makes sense for it to remain largely unchanged since Cipher was gone for awhile, so why change it?) or used in a unique way (Phenac Town’s gimmick of all the citizens being replaced with Cipher’s goons was great).
      And it’s not like they’re all identical. Realgam Tower is heavily revamped from its Colosseum counterpart, having lots of brand-new content and new areas. Pyrite Town has replaced the old building Cipher used to work from replaced with a TV broadcasting station. And while Mt. Battle’s structure is mostly unchanged, firstly, not having to deal with as many battles during the story mission makes it far less of an issue during the story, and second, given that the Mt. Battle gameplay mode is still present, the location has to be in the game, and we have to have a reason to go there for the location to even show up.
      We also have to consider that not everyone who plays XD will have played Colosseum (so these old locations wouldn’t really look old to them), and I’d imagine that most people who bought XD after having played Colosseum did so because they enjoyed at least _something_ of Colosseum’s story and/or gameplay, so for them, getting to revisit old locations again would be a treat much like getting to re-explore Kanto was in the Gen II games. I just wish the Under stuck around, too.

    Hyper Mode vs. Reverse Mode.
    Hyper Mode has 95% crit chance for Shadow Rush. Reverse Mode does not. Reverse mode damages itself on it's own. Hyper Mode does not.
    Hyper Mode prevents item use. Reverse Mode does as well.
    I am always amazed how people get annoyed at Hyper Mode. Like, you have a 95% crit chance on a 90 power move, 100 accuracy and neutral to all types. Recoil and lack of healing maybe concerning, but the only time you might be in trouble is the final gauntlet as healing is limited. You can always go back to the healing machines in other dungeons.
    Your heart gauge is slightly inaccurate. Both games you can walk and the heart gauge will open slowly. Scents work as well. The higher the level, the longer to purify.
    XD is indeed faster due to the purification chamber AND you don't have to go to Agate village every time.

      1. The game shouldn't have to spell it out for you. I used Shadow Rush instantly after my first Hyper Mode and realized I crit almost every hit. The game did tell us, a lot of people just didn't realize it. That's on them.
      There's also a long period of time to learn this since purification takes a while story wise. You battle a lot.
      2. The game also never tells you the Pokemon will ignore you if you don't select Shadow Rush, yet people understand this instantly.
      I think the nerf was necessary. Having a super effective move that crits all the time? Very broken. As it would also make Shadow End practically a OHKO for the physical attacking Pokemon.

    Honestly in terms of graphical quality, consistently fun gameplay and hard but fair difficulty...
    I'd personally say so.
    This game i am not kidding when i say this, _looks better than scarlet and violet for me_
    Now yes, the stadium models are very much the low points _especially if you pay attention to the shadows_
    You will never unsee square jumpluff.
    But literally _EVERYTHING_ made originally for this game still holds up, even in battle revolution where they had to touch up the models, the collosuem and xd gen 3 models hold up _stupidly well_
    Not to mention, this game has some of the strongest villains, grunts, and especially npc trainer designs.
    They are all so striking, yet deceptively simple and it literally conveys every individual npc personality in _seconds_
    My personal favorites being dakim, chobin, eagun, and _especially_ the protagonists.
    A lot of people complain Micheal was a downgrade compared to Wes, and while i can agree on that;
    Micheal is like three times as more developed.
    He's a child prodigy, he runs the simulators daily, he _became_ the purification lab's ultimate weapon against cipher.
    You could tell me he was a cyborg and I would _absolutely_ believe you.

    The changes to hyper mode are actually something I dislike about XD to be honest. Reverse mode barely serves a function anymore and is only slightly negative (because you only take recoil damage in reverse mode, and it's not even all that much). With Colosseum's hyper mode, you had restrictions, yes, but you also had that near 100% crit Shadow Rush. There were tangible negatives to hyper mode to drive home that being a shadow pokemon is in fact not good, but the damage increase (on physical pokemon anyway) still allowed you to somewhat benefit from hyper mode, creating a risk-reward proposition. In XD it's not restrictive, not beneficial, it barely is anything at all. It feels neutered, rather than rebalanced, which in my opinion is a bit of a shame.
