  • Brachypelma emilia, Red legged Tarantular pairing
Here we attempt to pair our Brachypelma Emilia the Red Legged Tarantular from Mexico , these are critically endangered in the wild so every effort should be made to breed these in the captive environment so they can be self sustaining within the hobby .

The little goodbye slap after you helped free the male was really funny to me; I rewatched it a few times in a row for a good chuckle. 19:22 is roughly the moment the little slap occurs.

Re: your comment about wild-caught spiders... It's the same with reptiles.
When I started keeping reptiles, back in the 80's - there were very few places you could buy them from, and a limited selection of species. The hobby was awash with wild-caught specimens. Gradually over the years, more people have come into the hobby, and (more importantly) many people are actually breeding the 'popular' species.
There's a lot more variety these days, and plenty of 'reptile fairs' where people get to see (and buy) what's been bred recently - from actual breeders. It's certainly cut down on the mount of imported animals.

I have such a fondness for Emilia. I bought one when i was 14(ish) as an adult spider (would have been a mature female), in the '80's. The shop sold it to me as a Redknee. It took me a long long time to find out what it actually was. No internet back then, i had to go to these places called "libraries" to read every book i could find. It took 10 years. I eventually found a picture of it in some glossy book on "creepy crawlies" being sold in the gift shop at Painton Zoo. It was only then i new i had a Red Leg. I had her for until my mid 20's. Wonderfull creature. I would have another in a heartbeat.

I get where your coming from with the Brachy's Dave but for me there is a nostalgia about them and Grammastola species. My first T way back in the 90's was an AF Chilean Rose, I had her all through my childhood and into my early 20's before she passed. Great video as always 😊

Oh wow ! What a treat ! I'm definitely hoping that your female will produce her sac before she molts. That would be great ! I know how you say they're slow with everything compared to most others, but I see it in a very different way : It simply means we get to enjoy them far longer than most others.
A couple of other slow-growers that would benefit from more captive breeding would be Grammostola rosea and Aphonopelma chalcodes. The first because Chile is no longer exporting them and the second because there's not enough CB out there so we can leave the wild ones alone.
Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)

Hello Dave and Camera Lady. What a lovely surprise! I thought it was still Saturday! There was some absolutely phenomenal footage of that male sitting on the cork bark. I don’t think I have ever seen a shot quite that well done. Bravo! 👏 That was an interesting pairing and he obviously got the job done at least twice. I guess now we hurry up and wait. Best of luck on that and fingers crossed that she will drop a good healthy sac.

I have kept an occasional wolf spider and had them drop a sac in a cricket keeper.
