When I used to keep several marine fish aquariums I would tell people new to the hobby, "A hungry fish is a happy fish." So with a lot of animals (not all) I believe it is healthy for the animal to be "hungry", but not starving.
I think most people do not understand that so many animals do not have a mechanism or instinct to stop feeding because they are "full". As you said though Dave it also depends on the stage of life the animal is in and there are other factors as well. So I agree with you Dave.
I'm a 67 year old grandmother, I've always been afraid of spiders. I started watching your channel about 6 months ago, you guys are amazing!!! I even rewatch a lot of your videos, I have learned so much, and am not as afraid as I was. They are very fascinating. I have thought about getting a spider, but my husband says he doesn't want anything around that can get lose and bite him. Just wanted to thank you guys, keep up the great work, you are very much appreciated. 😊
Reassure your husband that they can't escape if you have a good secure enclosure, and the likelihood of being bitten is very low, even if they did get loose, get a docile species like a grammostola pulchripes (chaco golden knee) ours is an old gentle lady and has never kicked hairs or threat posed, she's an absolute darling.🙂
I am 70 now, and we have very similar stories! This former arachnophobe really looks forward to Dave's videos! I had no idea that tarantulas could be fascinating and beautiful! Go, us! 😉🎄
I’m 66 & got in to spiders one year ago !! I now have 13 tarantulas. Made a cool looking zoo in part of my living room. It really looks good & it did cost. So they’re not going everywhere & not on shelves. With some work I might be able to fit a few more 🎉 No slings for me 🤣 mine very from 2-5 inches. I’m Loving the hobby !! First things ever morning are coffee & TH-cam
I’m a 57yr old granny, I too was an Arachnophobic. After watching TH-cam videos from our Main Man Dave, and his good Lady wife, I took the plunge and got myself a Brachypelma Hamorii (Mexican Red Knee, who I call Josie) I’ve had her for a year now! 🕷️💕 She’s amazing! I’m glad I got her 🥰xx
You better print 1000 calendars for next year, the channel is growing. I would love to buy other merch like mugs tshirts etc we love the channel let us support you!
I really enjoy watching the educational videos they are so informative and probably better advice anyone could get rather than reading up on the species Great video guys 😊👍🏻
Brilliant video guys, only thing I can say is all my Ts are nearly always out and usually stay out even if I’m doing maintenance which is amazing tbh, I log everything in journals and have since keeping over 2yrs and it’s something I enjoy doing, as for when to feed well that’s why I watch your videos and that’s why my Ts are all doing great and in fantastic condition so thanks Dave & Camera lady 👍🫶🕷️🎬❤️
Another master class on awesome husbandry and feeding advice, thanks for this! It's funny...about a year and a half ago I asked you in the comments of a video "How do you maintain a feeding schedule for such a collection?" I was so new to the hobby and had so much to learn. I was VERY much of the mindset that I needed to feed weekly on a schedule. Now I own 10 T's and maintain them based on the behavior I see. It makes the process of monitoring and feeding so much simpler! Thanks as always, your videos are always so helpful.
It was so nice to see one of my girls - Costa Rican Zebra - on your show. 😊 I think I had asked you if you had any awhile ago. I thoroughly enjoyed that video. Thanks so much to the both of you. Looking forward to the new calendars when they come out.
I don't have a feeding schedule, only for my feeders and slings, so I knew they are doing good. To put a copy right strike against someone, you should go to the actual page that's being fake, hit the clog on the top of the page and report there. I hope that helps
another fine educational video PROFF from your point of view in the beastie room. some great tips and hints to help the hobby to become stronger in better spiders. some great footage and close ups CAMERA LADY. absolutely top top advice-magical. many thanks guys and take care
Am I right to be a bit concerned when I watch your videos and 90% of the spiders don’t have any water when you open their enclosures? I was under the impression that all animals in captivity required access to fresh water at all times. Very happy to be educated if this is not the case. Thanks
Great video Dave .. You do such a wonderful job of explaining the reasoning behind your philosophy of housing and feeding and general husbandry .. I was particularly thrilled to see the Seemanni as I just acquired one about a month ago ... My first spider... They've always given me the Heebie jeebies but after watching your videos and how your methods instill calmness in your spiders I decided to branch out into this hobby ... I've kept a variety of Snakes over the last 30 years so it's not something I've entered lightly ... Thanks for sharing your knowledge...
I've always liked watching your videos Dave, as you are very experienced and knowledgeable and explain things really well and make it very educational. Now obviously I know nothing about having a channel and don't know if you receive any monetary benefit from the adverts, but you've had loads in your last few videos and right in the middle of you talking and making a point about something. I'm not going to lie, they're annoying. But great video none the less, sorry for the essay. 😂
I would love to weight my spiders as i do with my hunting hawks and falcons because,I think, the point is to feed spiders when they are at their “hunting weight”.
Have you found that all males - even before they hook out - have the more slender abdomen? I have a Bluefoot Baboon that I just can’t get as plump as another one about the same size. Has made me wonder if it’s a male and just won’t get that way.
Aww Dave can't believe people would do crap like that gutted calenders have gone have to wait for the 2025 edition was too slow mate next year now Dave thanks anyway
I don't have a feeding schedule for my Ts, I feed them whenever. I'll feed em, wait a week or 2 or 3, feed em, maybe a snack here and there. What I love about them is they don't require food regularly, and by feeding them more randomly I think its more wild like and natural. I have exceptions, like with molts and if they look thin. But other than that what I do works well for me. Love the videos Dave, your such a cool guy :) and camera lady is wonderful at her job
I have had a male that would eat but i had to pre kill it. And another he eats like he always has np. But i have had male that refused everything i tried to feed him. But the all drank water untill the end.
Hi Dave and Camera Lady.😁 Interesting video. You are so very consistent with the advice that you give. Such pretty heathy spiders. I am a bit bummed 🙁 about the calendars but will hopefully be in a better financial situation 💷💸next year so I can get one early. I have been wondering about your Seledonias. Do you still have them? I would love a video on the little jewels. Anyway, I am off to bed. Good night to you both and see you soon. 🌖 🥱😴
Can't say it enough, excellent video. These ones that you make with all the extra information are my favorite. I've learned so much from you guys. I went from being terrified of spiders to I now have one of my own. Little curly haired I've had almost a year (not so little anymore). I got him/her (sexing is not really important to me as I don't think I'm going to do any breeding) as a tiny sling. I've not had any issue at all not a one buy simply watching your videos. I would be willing to bet you guys are the reason for so many new to the hobby. Your videos are very easy to understand and follow. And an excellent resource for questions. You also respond to to questions and just simple comments which give a sense that you really care about your subscribers. I know you can't get to every one as you have many but the fact that you do says alot. Thank you again for all you do. Sending lots of respect from Cincinnati Ohio USA
I keep plants and my routine for watering is whenever it’s dry however with my Ts I will feed every 1-2 weeks. checking in on them throughout the week to see if they eat and do maintenance if needed! I’m new to the hobby but you Dave and Tom (Toms spiders) give fantastic advice! If my T looks active and is wondering, I’ll entertain it with a prey item sometimes they take it sometimes they don’t. My caribena versicolor(sub-adult finally has adult coloration!!!) molted last month and has yet to open its web! So I spray (a spritz) it’s web with a lil water to make sure it drinks at least :)… just got 2 Pamphobetus (mascara and south Ecuador II) so I expect to be feeding my Ts a little more often 😆
Your husbandry is just excellent. Not only the thoughtful and species appropriate feeding, but the way you sensitively move the containers, take the lids off, move the animals…and the results are clear in the attitude of the spiders. Happy little beasties! That threat pose was a very rare occurrence for you, and he soon stopped and sheepishly wandered off 😄 All would be keepers should watch all your videos carefully. As well as quite a few established ones that could do with taking a leaf or two out of your book! Love the pokie ❤
I came in to the hobby because of the beastie room. I watched all his videos at first (I used to be terrified). Then messaged him as to the best one for a beginner that had a fear. He suggested the curly haired. I've had it almost a year and it's doing excellent. No Google searches or other channels just The Beastie room. I've had absolutely no issues. I would and have highly recommended him to any and everyone!!!
I'm sure when I first started I was trying to feed too often. Now, I've gotten to where I only feed when I see a spider moving around more or when the abdomen looks smaller. The only Tarantulas I feed fairly often are my very tiny slings. I provide them with a prekilled item every 2 or 3 days and remove the item after 24 hours.
Same with dogs and cats. Far too many people are feeding their own pleasure in seeing their pets eat, not feeing their pets what they actually need. Grear video: again, you’re tuning in to your spiders, paying attention to them. After a while, you learn.
When I first started out during covid times I felt all over the place when it come to feedings, over time I've learnt a schedule is easier for me and much better for all my inverts 😊 most of my collection are scorps tbf and again bit like you dave with if there out and generally not normally then il offer
I restarted my tarantula collection last oct 2023 its now April 2024, i started out with two tarantula i now have 18 in 6 months 😊 and im 60 come this oct 2024 , i restarted my collection again after a well needed divorce 😂😂😂true
I have had spiders for a little over a year now. Always wanted them but my wife was afraid of them. A coworker brought me a A geniculata. Now I have 24 tarantulas. All started as slings. And 2 Southern Black Widows. And my wife has 4 jumping spiders. I have learned so much by watching you videos.
Hi dave, amazing video i have the same opinion when it comes to feeding.. But i have a question about the Tliltocatl vagans and the Tliltocatl kahlenberghi. I wonder if you have both and if you could tell me the difference between the 2 species. Cause i have both and i can't see no differences. I have 2 mature males and they look identical. And the females are basicly adult and i dont really see any differences with them aswel. So could you help me out with that ? I wanted to make a video about it, but i just don't have the correct knowledge about the differences between the 2 species.
My sub adult chalcodes has not eaten in almost a year and a half. She is STILL fat as hell and STILL hasn't molted. She stays barricaded in her burrow most of the time. But she is in wonderful condition. My other aphonopelma (adult seemanni) also hasn't eaten in a VERY long time and her abdomen is also huge. So yes, the aphonopelmas can stay healthy for a very long time without eating. GREAT video Dave, as always. I LOVE learning more from you every time.
Very interesting video! Different spiders and breeds, different requirements. Pay attention their behavior, do some research, and watch and learn from Dave's videos!
My daughter has bought me a gbb & a p.regius jumping spider for my Christmas. Im so happy, can't believe she slurged on me, im used to getting a box of chocolates at most lol. In reality i think the p.regius is more for her because she thinks they're adorable😂
Dave... You ARE the Tarantula Whisperer! If i had the knowledge you have about Tarantulas i would have it made! I've been trying to raise H. Macs. I've lost 3 of the 4 that i had. It's making me crazy. If only i had your knowledge!!❤
I love how all of your spiders are so well behaved ( with the exception of that one funnel web spider). This is due to the fact that you are knowledgeable and respectful of each of them. Im not a keeper, but I enjoy watching your channel and love learning about our eight legged friends. Keep up the good work Dave & Camera Lady!
Nice video dear Dave and Sweet Camera Lady and in nature the spider has to wait or hunt for food so your advice is good 👍! Have a wonderful rest of the week and weekend, 👋❤🥰🤗🕷👍
Really interesting video with a lot of good information, thanks for sharing! For me I wait till the Ts are out looking for food which works well as I get to see them a bit more this way
You know it’s strange. A few years ago the thought of a tarantula scared me stiff. Then I got convinced to handle the one on my campus and since I started watching them on TH-cam and can’t wait to get one for myself. Dave was one of the first I started watching. Dave can take a big chunk of the credit 😂
I feed my tarantulas once every 2 weeks I find it better that way but idk if I should just stick with crickets or dubia roaches no idea if one is better then the other wjat you think Dave
I got an adult female regalis in May she kept refusing food until she molted 3 months later, ate a dubia, then back to hunger strike. So, for the past 6 months, she only took 1 roach.
I am relatively new to the hobby. I appreciate all that you do to educate us that is new to this great hobby. I love seeing how to videos of rehousing , feeding and enclosure set ups. Alot of channel are more geared toward intermediate to expert keepers. I have learned so much from your channel. Thank you for what you do in educating us newbies
My adult A chalchodes hasn’t taken food in over 100 days at this point and it looks similar to yours …. I have been pushing my feedings out longer… seems my dubia colony is well fed and I think that has a lot to do with how often you feed.. I care for my feeds as good as my T’s … I raise them up to good feeding source.. I think it’s how well fed are the feeders you use … one well fed roach will offer a lot more then 2-3 thin roaches. Quality over quantity is my theory
I have a parahybana. It is a spider with a fast metabolism. I want to grow a huge monster out of her (she's already huge, to be honest). For these purposes, I try to keep her belly always big. However, even being fat, she goes out hunting. I like it. Sometimes I let her hunt to no avail for a week or two. That is, judging by the belly, I overfeed her, but in reality I also let her starve, sometimes. I've heard that the more a spider eats and sheds more often, the less it will live. I hope this statement is only partially true. In any case, I like it more than my old brachypelma, which eats every six months or a year)))
Have you ever been tagged by one of your scorpions? Tarantula collectives Richard got stung a couple weeks ago, his reaction is pretty hilarious if you haven't seen it. Reminds me of the dad in A Christmas Story. Oh yeah! Super excited to get my sweatshirt. Cheers.
My old lady grammostola pulchripes can go for 6 months between feeds, she never loses condition and always looks plump. We got her over 3 years ago as an adult female and she hasn't moulted once in our care, so I can only imagine she's very old bless her. She's quite active in the summer months and will eat well, then suddenly goes on hunger strike for months at a time. My psalmopeus victori and irmina on the other hand would eat every day if I let them lol.
I do this same thing with my snakes. I don't have a schedule, never have! I wait for them to come out of their hide and start hunting. And I can tell u by me doing it this way I've never had not even 1 animal, refuse food!
I always wanted to feed them based on a preplanned schedule, I believe this is the better way to do. I have200+ tarantulas and unfortunatelly I tend to forget some of them if feeding not based on a schedule.
For what it's worth, here's my system. On my front door I have a dry erase calendar. I cut some post card paper into little squares and hot glued them to magnets. On them I've written each section of my collection, e.g. "Brown Shelf", "Living Room", "Slings". Then I move each magnet to current day when I go thru a section and check on everyone. That way I can keep track and make sure I don't forget and leave anyone behind. 🤗 it really helped me improve my keeping. Especially with my ADHD 😏
I love watching when your pairing them I'm always on edge watching could u make more pairing and feeding and watering the spiders plz from Glasgow Scotland x
I have to say, most of my spiders are always out even the ones notoriously reclusive. My electric blue, hmac, chilobrachys kaeng krachan. I sporadically feed them. I dont keep tabs. I also dont feed them huge meals unless they are huge spiders. They all have plump abdomen. Ive learned over feeding, once theyve reached their max abdomen size they will just hide. My seemani is the only one that will stay hidden. Anyway another great video.
Will spiders take freshly killed food or does it have to be living. It's just occurred to me that if someone showed videos of their pet dog always killing it's dinner there might be trouble. I'm not bothered but some may question it.
It might take them longer to find and eat it because it's not moving around, but they don't seem too fussy. my smaller slings get fed a meal worm I've snipped in half, they only eat pre killed. Watching them hunt is the best part of keeping spiders though 😂
Dave, I watch some of the tarantula videos on other TH-cam channels and they leave me so annoyed. One of the guys in particular is constantly waving his hands around his tarantulas frantically, and, surprise surprise, his spiders are constantly giving threat postures. All that stress can't possibly be good for them, although he seems to be thrilled to no end by it. You are always so gentle with your animals and it comes through in their calm demeanor. Love watching all you do!
Thank you for explaining about abdomen size. As most of us have been told to make sure the abdomen is the same size of the carapace. Everything explained so well 💜
When I used to keep several marine fish aquariums I would tell people new to the hobby, "A hungry fish is a happy fish." So with a lot of animals (not all) I believe it is healthy for the animal to be "hungry", but not starving.

a great review.....thanks!
1 of my favorite things to do is put some feed in for my phormingochilus pennelhewlettorum and just watch them tackle it 😁
May we see a picture of your beastie?

TH-cam has changed how they do it now , we need to the control of them again 👍
I would love to weight my spiders as i do with my hunting hawks and falcons because,I think, the point is to feed spiders when they are at their “hunting weight”.
Yes that would be interesting and I use the same thought but it relates to behaviour our hawks respond well when on the edge as Dom our spiders 👍
Just curious, How come you didn't clean out the water bowl and get water?
Becouse we was doing other things 😂they were all filled at the end ❤
Have you found that all males - even before they hook out - have the more slender abdomen? I have a Bluefoot Baboon that I just can’t get as plump as another one about the same size. Has made me wonder if it’s a male and just won’t get that way.
Dave, which one tastes like toasted marshmallow? Amazon?
That would be telling 😂
Don’t they stop eating once they’re full?
Not always
Aww Dave can't believe people would do crap like that gutted calenders have gone have to wait for the 2025 edition was too slow mate next year now Dave thanks anyway

I was feeding all my tarantulas and scorpions while watching this is already late at night but is worth it 👍 amazing video sir Dave
I only ever obey the third rule when it comes to feeding mine - NEVER EVER feed after midnight 😂
😂😂😂
😂😂👍👍

When I first started out during covid times I felt all over the place when it come to feedings, over time I've learnt a schedule is easier for me and much better for all my inverts 😊 most of my collection are scorps tbf and again bit like you dave with if there out and generally not normally then il offer
I restarted my tarantula collection last oct 2023 its now April 2024, i started out with two tarantula i now have 18 in 6 months 😊 and im 60 come this oct 2024 , i restarted my collection again after a well needed divorce 😂😂😂true
My good man love your videos keep up the hard work
Appreciate it!❤️🙏
Well done Dave & Camera Lady on a very interesting show, the spiders shown happen to be some of my favorites.
Thank you 🙏
I live in the US. Do you sale your T-shirts? I'd love to have one. And your calendar when you get more. Thanks
They are not one I have looked into ?
My sub adult chalcodes has not eaten in almost a year and a half. She is STILL fat as hell and STILL hasn't molted. She stays barricaded in her burrow most of the time. But she is in wonderful condition. My other aphonopelma (adult seemanni) also hasn't eaten in a VERY long time and her abdomen is also huge. So yes, the aphonopelmas can stay healthy for a very long time without eating. GREAT video Dave, as always. I LOVE learning more from you every time.
My A. chalcodes are all on a diet and they’re all really FAT too!!! 😂
Very interesting video! Different spiders and breeds, different requirements. Pay attention their behavior, do some research, and watch and learn from Dave's videos!
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yay idk what the time diff is from where u guys are to here in the US but I love when I'm awake when ur video posts
My daughter has bought me a gbb & a p.regius jumping spider for my Christmas. Im so happy, can't believe she slurged on me, im used to getting a box of chocolates at most lol. In reality i think the p.regius is more for her because she thinks they're adorable😂
Biggest sin of all pet OWNERS REGARDLESS the pet.
OVER FEEDING.....
Dave... You ARE the Tarantula Whisperer! If i had the knowledge you have about Tarantulas i would have it made! I've been trying to raise H. Macs. I've lost 3 of the 4 that i had. It's making me crazy. If only i had your knowledge!!❤
Keep trying you will get there ❤️
I love how all of your spiders are so well behaved ( with the exception of that one funnel web spider). This is due to the fact that you are knowledgeable and respectful of each of them. Im not a keeper, but I enjoy watching your channel and love learning about our eight legged friends. Keep up the good work Dave & Camera Lady!
Thank you 🙏
Nice video dear Dave and Sweet Camera Lady and in nature the spider has to wait or hunt for food so your advice is good 👍! Have a wonderful rest of the week and weekend, 👋❤🥰🤗🕷👍
Thanks 👍❤️🙏
When spiders are full grown adults, do they still molt?
Yes they do, spiders molt throughout their lives and don't really stop! That said, molts do tend to slow down as they get older.
Yes they never stop only slow down
Great video! I did get rather distracted by the spider on the shelf behind you as it was very active and I’m sure it was looking for a way out! 😂
Those fakers tried to get $70.00 from me. I could not find your actual account.
We are of Facebook facebook.com/Daveslittlebeasties/
master class by a true master!!
Your too kind ❤
Really interesting video with a lot of good information, thanks for sharing! For me I wait till the Ts are out looking for food which works well as I get to see them a bit more this way
Been watching you for a while Dave recently got my first t a Monocentropus balfouri sling 😊
Awesome 😎
@@daveslittlebeasties I saw they’re highly rated on the tarantula collective but a guy in the shop was saying they’re aggro 🤷🏼♂️
👍❤️❤️
I feed my tarantulas once every 2 weeks I find it better that way but idk if I should just stick with crickets or dubia roaches no idea if one is better then the other wjat you think Dave
A variety is always better
i love your channel
❤❤❤❤
I got an adult female regalis in May she kept refusing food until she molted 3 months later, ate a dubia, then back to hunger strike. So, for the past 6 months, she only took 1 roach.
“It needs to get some exercise.” 🤣 My spiders wait for fast food on the couch.
Welcome aboard!❤️❤️❤️
My adult A chalchodes hasn’t taken food in over 100 days at this point and it looks similar to yours …. I have been pushing my feedings out longer… seems my dubia colony is well fed and I think that has a lot to do with how often you feed.. I care for my feeds as good as my T’s … I raise them up to good feeding source.. I think it’s how well fed are the feeders you use … one well fed roach will offer a lot more then 2-3 thin roaches. Quality over quantity is my theory
You are totally correct my friend 👍❤️
I feed my Ts about 1-2 times a month. Dont over feed👍🏽
In any case, I like it more than my old brachypelma, which eats every six months or a year)))
Super video! I would love to see the way you handle your beasties become the standard across the hobby. 🕸🕷🕸👍👍
Thank you 🙏
Have you ever been tagged by one of your scorpions? Tarantula collectives Richard got stung a couple weeks ago, his reaction is pretty hilarious if you haven't seen it. Reminds me of the
dad in A Christmas Story. Oh yeah! Super excited to get my sweatshirt. Cheers.
Yes I did see it and no I have never been tagged😂👍
My old lady grammostola pulchripes can go for 6 months between feeds, she never loses condition and always looks plump. We got her over 3 years ago as an adult female and she hasn't moulted once in our care, so I can only imagine she's very old bless her. She's quite active in the summer months and will eat well, then suddenly goes on hunger strike for months at a time. My psalmopeus victori and irmina on the other hand would eat every day if I let them lol.
Hi Dave I have a curly hair that matured into a male around 3 weeks ago if you’re interested?
I have a couple but thanks for thinking of me I normally need them 😂👍
@@daveslittlebeasties no problem if I get any more males I’ll contact you
I do this same thing with my snakes.
Hello great video information Dave
Thanks 👍
What a lovely video thank you all of your spiders and reptiles you are a credit to you and what you represent
Thank you kindly❤️
Morning
Zimbabwe Grey, what a beautiful baboon spider! She looks like a beauty I would like to keep in the future
Thanks very informative
Your spiders are always in excellent condition
So nice of you❤️👍
For what it's worth, here's my system.
I also won't usually feed unless they 'look' hungry. I judge them one by one, so nobody gets too fat or too skinny, depending on species.
My mom, on the other hand, just feeds all hers once a week, and all of them look obese to me, lol
I love watching when your pairing them I'm always on edge watching could u make more pairing and feeding and watering the spiders plz from Glasgow Scotland x
Plenty to come ❤️👍
I have to say, most of my spiders are always out even the ones notoriously reclusive.
It is aggravating when people steal off of others accounts.
❤❤❤
My adult versicolor has a feeding station in her enclosure. I know she’s hungry when she comes to it, looking for worms.
Thank you guys. Another great video with great info. Love your videos and well done video.
Thank you Dave for this I have a fireleg with a big abdomen and was worried. I love educational videos and rehousing lol
Thank you hopefully we can get more people to respect their spiders ❤️
Thank you for explaining about abdomen size. As most of us have been told to make sure the abdomen is the same size of the carapace. Everything explained so well 💜
My purple bloom spider tells me by putting 1 leg on the front of the enclosure. At least that's what I think 😂
