The look of concentration/confusion on Dennis’ face as he struggles to perform with the sequencer on the high hat is priceless. This almost works as an episode of Twilight Zone…😮
This, in retrospect, is brilliant. True, no one liked it much at the time, but now 45 years later it’s actually AWESOME and needs to be added to every live DJ routine.
Never heard this song before, the sound is so unlike them What really surprises me above everything else is that they didn't sing live when we all know how great their voices were.
This song was just a demo I believe, I don't think the disco version was ever officially released, though it could have been as a single possibly. I had the demo album gifted to me, and it was signed by the entire band. It was marked "demo" and was blue translucent plastic. I wish I still had it!
The hate from Beach Boy fans is bizarre but expected. Most of them hate disco and dance music whether it grooves or not. This was a good track and wasn't overdone like KC or The Hustle.
Awesome performance! The dancers were excellent.... no splits, no flips, no tricks, just good all-around dancing! Just like we remember... good old days for sure! 👍🏻 Happy Friday 🥳 Thank you for sharing! 💖
How come so many complained when the made a disco tune, but nobody complained about the Bee Gees... Love this, especially the instrumental with the loooong sax solo...
The Bee Gees went disco (well, they put one or two disco songs on their albums) years before it had become mainstream. "Jive Talkin'" was a hit in 1975. This song was done in 1979 right when disco was beginning to die. Also the Bee Gees make some very unique disco songs. This basics of this song is interchangeable with any number of disco songs released in 1979 with only the vocals being unique.
Nobody ever complained about Bee Gees doing disco cause all they’ve done in this style was awesome. This… this is Just crap and pathetic. Unfortunatly, exept for Denis (❤) solo album + the forever & kokomo songs…. Beach Boys invented the « has been » syndrome in 1970…
The fan hate gets old - most of them just hate disco, which isnt a great reason to discard it. I do see some reasonable criticisms of the song though. I think they could've and should've done a whole album delving more into the style. A lot of disco was overdone, but some did it nicely.
It was a hit on the dance floors here in Copenhagen in 1979 💃🪩growing up with the Beach Boys (my elder siblings had all their records) I, at that time being so young, thought it was incredible cool that these “old” guys could do disco 🕺🏽 I love all their periods ❤ period!
Exactly - one of The Beach Boys' great strengths is the diverse genres they've worked in - and often were decent. And they always did better on the other side of the pond, especially given the love of dance and electronic music in European markets.
As a fan of the Beach Boys, i blame this mess on Bruce Johnston and Carl Wilson. The late 70s and most of the 80s were not kind to the band, unfortunately.
The blame really belongs to producer, Curt Boettcher. The original Here Comes the Night wasn't that big of a hit when released in '67, but this is just an abomination - an insult to both the Beach Boys AND disco.
Or how about it was a great effort and sounded very good. Whether you like it or not is completely subjective, but the only reason a lot of Beach Boy fans hate it is because of their disdain for disco and dance music. I'm a both a huge BB fan and dance music fan (though not so much of disco because of its overdone "Do The Hustle" hits). Additionally, while record sales and general popularity were not kind to The Beach Boys during the 70's and 80's, some of their best work came from those eras, so THEY were doing well - the public's poor perception? Not so much. The public was distracted by newer acts - a lot of which were fantastic as well, but people should've kept listenning to The Beach Boys, too.
I saw the BeachBoys in 1977 in Liverpool England. I also saw their 50th Anniversary at the Albert Hall London. I love everything including this. Diverse and brilliant ❤️
@@JoshHumble Good comment. I always liked the song. It's good disco and still sounds like The Beach Boys. It's not a sell-out. Too late to the party I guess. I'd like to hear a mix of the 9 minute instrumental version with more vocals added but no Carl Wilson verses. There's a lot to enjoy in both the singles and the longer versions.
That would be Surf's Up. A ballad, with epic overtones, and with a singalong coda (Child Is The Father of The Man in Surf's Up, the Na-na-na-nas in Hey Jude)
O.M.G. As a serious fan of their music (post Pet Sounds) this is….IDK. So bad it’s good? Hilariously unintentional? Dennis looks confounded, but mostly just seeing Al Jardine with the moves! Carl keeping a straight face. This is a great 3 minutes or so, on sooo many levels🤭😆 Beach Boys history.
I prefer the Wild Honey version but this isn’t all that bad if I’m being honest. Maybe if the album had a 7 minute edit instead of the 11 minute one I would like it more but it definitely doesn’t deserve all the hate it gets.
The Beach Boys episode of Midnight Special was one of the group’s best TV appearances. It had great performances of Surfin USA, Good Vibrations, Rock & Roll Music (with Roger McGuinn on guitar), Lady Lynda, and Angel Come Home. But THIS is the one you decide to upload???😂
The lead track from The Light Album. I always liked this version of their song, but I never had a problem with disco. Another great song from this album was "Good Timin'".
A lot of people don’t know this but when these guys first started out they didn’t have a name for their band. But their skeptical first agent told them to, “Go pound sand!” That inspired their now-famous name. That’s my story and I’m sticking with it.
There's a good way to do disco, and a bad way to do disco. The Rolling Stones with the song 'Miss You' is a disco song done right. 'Here Comes The Night' is disco done wrong. It's too overblown.
At the risk of howls of indignation from the purists, for my money, this 1979 remake of Here Comes The Night has the decisive edge over the Beach Boys' earlier version on their 1967 Wild Honey album. Their harmonies absolutely SOARED here, especially in that cresendo at the end. Absolute, utter perfection.
Just awful... and I grew up on the BB in the 70's and love there entire songbook. I give em credit for trying to be hip at the time and trying a disco song.
This was freaking awful. There is no way the Beach Boys thought this was good. Record companies were always trying for a quick score on the latest trend.

Yes! The expressions on his face makes it seem like there's a sniper in the rafters so he damn well better keep singing. Poor Dennis.
none of them are actually performing
All miming to the track.
The Beach Boys doing disco is better than it has any right to be.
Yeah, baby
It's like watching the Bee Gees surfing.
This, in retrospect, is brilliant. True, no one liked it much at the time, but now 45 years later it’s actually AWESOME and needs to be added to every live DJ routine.
When I played this on the jukebox in my college's Rathskeller, some guy went up and KICKED the jukebox!
Never heard this song before, the sound is so unlike them What really surprises me above everything else is that they didn't sing live when we all know how great their voices were.
Yeah. I didn't care for this one.
Check the 1967 original for comparison, if you're curious (It's from their Wild Honey LP)

@@nightoddity - It's not a demo. It was officially released as a single (seven and twelve inch) and it's also on the 'Light Album'. 🙂
Disco Beach Boys, glad I missed this the first time around.
Me too. thankfully.
They were an absolutely amazing band. Loved all their music.
Lip synced, unfortunately. Look up the performances from Radio City Music Hall 1979 if you want a real live barnstormer version of this.

When the Bee Gees went disco, it seemed authentic, at least to me. This just sounds like the Boys following the trend.

So it's a Chic song with Beach Boys vocal harmonies! It's a shame they didn't try a punk rock record too.
Love You has some pretty punk sounding vocals on it. Overall it feels very proto-new wave

What do you get if you take “The Bee Gees” and put them on stage in front of the ocean? “The Beach Boys” of course!
When hanging with Charlie Manson isn't the most questionable choice in your career...
Until now, I thought the worst Beach Boys song was the one where Brian sings the directions to his house.
Do not disparage the awesomeness that was “Busy Doin’ Nothin’”!
Their version of Rock and Roll Music really sucks since there are well-known versions that are infinitely better. Chuck Berry, Beatles...

Would love their version of rock n roll music from the same year
That was 1976.
Funny how the Four Seasons did Disco through the 70s with much success. And of course The Bee Gees.
Beach Boys had a disco phase? Yikes....

Just one track, though. The rest of that album (Light Album) has some really good songs from Carl, Dennis, and Brian.
