The amount of times this story has come up and folks wonder what Zep would have been without Plant and with Reid somehow come to the conclusion it would still be Zep and Zep songs simply with a different vocalist. Not even close, Plant was the main contibutor of lyrics and later a lot of songwriting input. Not to mention Bohnam would also not have been thought of or ended up in the band. Zep would be very different that's for sure, to say it would be better? Hard to even imagine. Fate is what happened, the way Plant and Bonzo ended up in the band, Jones wife telling him to call Jimmy, all being available right away. Divine intervention of the Rock Gods!!! Those four had magic together, making each better than they were without the others, all four playing...... Sublime!!

Sadly I only got to see him once at Ebbets Field in Denver in 1973. He was incredibly underrated. I had every album he recorded.

@user-pv8jy1nt8f I reckon we will have to agree to disagree on this. IMO, at their peak, Terry and Steve were vocal equals and both were way better than Plant.

@user-pv8jy1nt8f I'm running out of ways to reply to you. There was very little Steve couldn't do vocally. He could belt out a song as well or better than anyone and he could sing soft and sweet. Hell he could do songs from a musical too. th-cam.com/video/QkGNn3QWwp4/w-d-xo.html
Great singer, I have some of his albums and I did know that he was asked to sing for the band that became LZ. I believe Robert Plant said Terry was one of his favourite singers.
I knew his personal tech when Reid lived in Laurel Canyon, LA/Ca. One afternoon, he brought over Terry's 54 Gold-top LP and left it with me while he took another guitar in for repair!
Big fan of Terry right from the get go… Saw him live a lot. There was a great gig in the Marquee with Willie Weeks on bass and Soko Richardson, I can’t remember if there was a percussionist but the concert was absolutely amazing. Rich Kid Blues is my favorite TR rendition.
I saw Terry Ried open up for The Jimi Hendrix Experience in 296768 ? He play solo + was a 1 man band, he was awesome! "Bang Bang" the best version. The Soft Machine also preformed @ The Westchester County Center in White Plains NY, I was in JHS at the time, totally unforgettable, Rock on! ArtyThan ☆♡☆
Let's not forget that he would've had to come up with the lyrics for Zeppelin as well. We can't just imagine the same songs, but with Terry singing, same with DP, but on a much smaller level. They do sound incredibly similar, almost like a male Janis Joplin.
Back then, I remember seeing Terry Reid albums on the shelves, but to this day I have not heard one snippet from them. But I have heard every Zep song and album many times over.
This guy sounds a lot like Plant, so it would have made sense for Zeppelin. However Deep Purple had different vibe, and Gillan was the perfect singer for them. His range and power were the best.
Ill be honest, I've been a Rock guy all my life and I'm 58 now and I've never heard of Terry Reid so looks to me like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple did okay after all. Because Robert Plant was a monster vocalist himself and so was Ian Gillan.
Well, I'm 52 years old and I realize that people increasingly like to reinvent history by affirming what everyone ignores, especially them. To believe that they all come from a parallel dimension, on the other hand there aren't many people left to innovate
yeah, incredible singer, I can totally see him doing some iconic Zep tracks very well indeed. (Of course, many of the songs, being lyriced by Robert, including "Stairway," would not have been near the same, but whatever). I used to think this was the dude from Humble Pie, cos they sound similar, but that was Steve Marriot, a fabulous voice. And while Reid obviously KNEW Bonham, would HE have been able to persuade Stubborn John as well as Plant (I believe) did? Zeppelin without Bonham is pretty unthinkable.
I think Led Zeppelin got the lineup they were destined for, but I still wonder what would've come out with Reid in the band, an amazing voice, and playing guitar, too! would Dazed and Confused live been more of a jam? No Quarter have more life to it? Would Stairway have come to be? Like someone else mentioned, it would have been interesting if Page and Reid got together, after 1980. Just to have some fun!
IIRC, I just read in _Guitar Player_ that Page has been “thinking about” maybe going out touring, possibly even recording-pure speculation I’m assuming-but wouldn’t it be, er, ironic… if Terry Reid was his vocalist in either regard? Unless Page is up for 100% instrumental, then… why not?
I saw Terry Reid at the Roundhouse, he was a great singer and guitarist...The other bands on that show were Jefferson Airplane and some mob called "The Doors"... a good concert. I'm pretty certain Terry did a great version of "Season Of The Witch"...but it WAS a long time ago(1968?)
Glad Terry recomended ROBERT for the job. I couldnt imagine ZEPPELIN without that GOLDEN THROAT AND THOSE GOLDEN LOCKS. THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT SONGS. NOBODY CAN WAIL LIKE ROBERT!! ROCK ON
What a great video. Never knew much about reid, but now I do. Didn’t know he also played the guitar and wrote. Is it possible that Zeppelin would’ve been even better and more successful with him in the band sharing guitar duties with Jimmy? Probably not.
Terry Reed had a versatile voice, he was a good guitarist and a thoughtful, talented songwriter. I particularly like Reed's acoustic songs but if he was with Led Zeppelin instead of Robert Plant, we wouldn't have Stairway To Heaven, The Rain Song, Kashmir, No Quarter or many other wonderful, iconic songs. The individual talents and the chemistry between Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham was what made Led Zeppelin so great. What we would have had with Terry Reed singing and writing with Zep would've been something different but without the Golden God, Zep wouldn't have reached the heights that they did.
Interesting to speculate whether Zep would have been as big without The Golden God. Terry certainly had the lungs and the musicianship, but he didn't have the larger-than-life stage presence or the fantasy-figure qualities: He was just a smallish guy with a huge tenor voice and strong rhythm-guitar chops, whereas Robert was someone that every woman wanted to be with, and every guy wanted to BE.
I could easily hear him singing Whole Lotta Love or Heartbreaker or even Stairway. He was great. I saw him three times in Detroit. He was really popular there.
Very nice guy. I spent a couple of hours with him at a “free stage” at the 2nd Atlanta Pop Festival at Byron Ga. My band covered several of his songs and he was shocked that we even knew who he was. BTW, his show was great at the free stage.
If not for the movie "Wonderland" I would have never found Terry Reid. The song "Faith to Arise" was playing in one scene and I found out who he was by watching the end credits
Stumbled across The River in a used album bin in 1976 and have been a fan ever since. Couldn't understand why he wasn't more popular then. Still can't.
Sad story. Looking back we can see how decisions can make you a prince or a pauper in history. Reid turned down two huge rock & roll royalty bands to become a pauper while those who answered the call became the princes.
Hardly a pauper, he has had his songs covered by some massive acts over the years, i am sure Terry has done very well out of it, he doesn’t seem too broken up by it in his interviews. How is it a sad story, he has had a decent career out of music, he might not be a household name to many but a sad story it definitely isn’t.
Terry Reid used to be a regular with Jack Tempshin's Big Monday at The Joint on Pico Blvd. It was really fun watching Terry sing The Kinks' classic "Waterloo Sunset" in a little bar in L.A. Ahh, the benefits of growing up an Angeleno.
wow, had heard of him peripherally but didn't know he was that good, what a set of pipes, great britain's wealth of rock musicians in the 1960's and 1970's is extraordinary.
From what I understood, Terry had a budding solo career at the time. So he made an understandable decision to pass on those opportunities to focus on his solo career. It's a decision 99% of singers would have made if they were in his shoes. Terry Reid is just too unlucky.
Great story. I've never heard of Terry Reid before, but he certainly has a great voice. Reminds me of Steve Marriott. I guess timing IS everything. But, I don't think Zeppelin would have been Zeppelin without Robert Plant.
I have been Zep fan over 50 years and never heard of Terry Reid. What a fantastic voice.

P.S. At least we agree that Terry Reid was a great singer.
@user-pv8jy1nt8f I'm running out of ways to reply to you. There was very little Steve couldn't do vocally. He could belt out a song as well or better than anyone and he could sing soft and sweet. Hell he could do songs from a musical too.

Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes sounds very similar to Terry Reid. I wonder if Chris was influenced by him.
Chris Robinson also sounds like Steve Marriott.
my thoughts exactly.
Definitely👌♥️
Damn, I’m listening right about at the 4:45 mark and instantly thought the same thing!
Yes I heard a Reid song and immediately thought of Black Crowes
Never heard of this guy. Easy to see though that he is for real.
Top notch vocals and guitar. I'm going to listen to more.
Good to see someone recognize Terry! He’s in a lot of The Devil’s Rejects soundtrack. ☮️
He seems so down-to-earth and normal... Makes a change from most of the old rockers, who come across a bit aloof, or out-of-it.
With Willie Weeks? Wow I am envious.
The Devil's Rejects introduced me to Terry's music and I've been a devoted fan ever since
I saw Terry Ried open up for The Jimi Hendrix Experience in 296768 ? He play solo + was a 1 man band, he was awesome! "Bang Bang" the best version.
The Soft Machine also preformed @ The Westchester County Center in White Plains NY, I was in JHS at the time, totally unforgettable, Rock on! ArtyThan ☆♡☆
My first concert was jimi Hendricks at the Westchester county center, I think it was $4.
Oh wow, so very lucky for you! and I’m just a tad bit jelly 😮 😂
Terry Reid,Steve Marriott and Paul Rogers. A trifecta of voices.
I never heard about him. But what a great voice
But I have heard every Zep song and album many times over.
obviously you are one of zep's minions, fart in a bottle
....sounds like you are missing out then.
Yes, I must be. He had a great voice.@@harveythompson1756
This guy sounds a lot like Plant, so it would have made sense for Zeppelin. However Deep Purple had different vibe, and Gillan was the perfect singer for them. His range and power were the best.
some of my most treasured records. Terry Reid and River
@Lolo.13 A bit too technical for me pal. I'm just an old rocker who may have and may not have smoked one too many joints at concerts.
yeah, incredible singer, I can totally see him doing some iconic Zep tracks very well indeed.
I like it that you let his music be most of the video.
Did a fantastic version of ‘stay with me baby’ that inspired Chris Cornell’s version!
Wow. I heard his name but never heard until now. He sounds great.
As a huge Led Zeppelin fan... Though I think Reid is a great singer... I am so happy this never happened!
Speak Now Or Forever Hold Your Peace. F**king awesome.
So he didnt really turn them down.Just honoured his commitments.
Guys amazing! He did amazing work on his own. Brave Awakening is one of his best songs.
Glad Terry recomended ROBERT for the job. I couldnt imagine ZEPPELIN without that GOLDEN THROAT AND THOSE GOLDEN LOCKS. THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT SONGS. NOBODY CAN WAIL LIKE ROBERT!! ROCK ON
Always a fan of you Reid & your songs!♥️🌟👋
Wow‼️ Amazing singer‼️ Never heard of this guy before. Pretty decent guitarist too
Jesus he sounds AMAZING.
Back when there were 7acts during a show,
You'd have band's that had a buzz more than record's sold but great performers...
High praise from Aretha for Terry Reid! She was right too.
What a great video. Never knew much about reid, but now I do. Didn’t know he also played the guitar and wrote. Is it possible that Zeppelin would’ve been even better and more successful with him in the band sharing guitar duties with Jimmy? Probably not.
Doubtful, the writing wouldn’t have been the same without Plant
Terry Reid probably didn’t read Tolkien, like Robert Plant did. Lots of lyrical ideas swirling in Roberts brain from books he absorbed.
much better
plant is a thieving bastard, along with smack pagey
@@KittyGrizGrizyou got that right!
I’m glad he turned them down. They would never have become as great with him.
...however he became every bit as great without them.
Wow! I’m 62 and have been exposed to pop and rock by older siblings since I was two and heard the Beatles. I’ve never heard Terry. Amazing.
Interesting to speculate whether Zep would have been as big without The Golden God. Terry certainly had the lungs and the musicianship, but he didn't have the larger-than-life stage presence or the fantasy-figure qualities: He was just a smallish guy with a huge tenor voice and strong rhythm-guitar chops, whereas Robert was someone that every woman wanted to be with, and every guy wanted to BE.
horse dung
I could easily hear him singing Whole Lotta Love or Heartbreaker or even Stairway. He was great. I saw him three times in Detroit. He was really popular there.
Janice Joplin meets Paul Rogers, amazing and I've never heard of him before this.
What a shame, he should be everywhere.
Janis*, yes, I love her too.
Saw him fairly recently at Ram's Head in Annapolis. He still has the pipes and brought back so many great memories.
I don’t think he would have got many guitar solos in Led Zeppelin 😁
😂😂😂
And 5:02 shows why...
Amazing voice, stage presence and a damn good musician. Wow!
I was a very big Terry Reid fan from the very start. His first album was awesome.
Sad story. Looking back we can see how decisions can make you a prince or a pauper in history. Reid turned down two huge rock & roll royalty bands to become a pauper while those who answered the call became the princes.
Totally. The gods are fickle. I'm sure to him at the time his support act for the Rolling Stones seemed a more solid deal.
@@ghostdriver7558 Thank you for saying
“the quiet part”, out loud. I agree.
He didn't turn down Led Zeppelin, he turned down Jimmy Page. Led Zeppelin is not Jimmy Page, and never would've existed without the others.
Never heard of him But will be looking for his music starting now
Yes. I could see Terry doing the Zeppelin gig
Agreed. I can _easily_ hear him ruling Zep’s debut opening track, ‘Good Times, Bad Times’.
(And I t’s pretty cool, too, LOL!)
wow, had heard of him peripherally but didn't know he was that good, what a set of pipes, great britain's wealth of rock musicians in the 1960's and 1970's is extraordinary.
He was perfect! Why didn’t he become a huge worldwide star?
Probably because he turned down lead singer roles in Led Zeppelin AND Deep Purple when offered? 😂
Makes you realize what made Zeppelin, Zeppelin! 😀
My curiosity led (no pun intended) me to collecting all his albums many years ago...His output is mind blowing....
Dude had soul!
He still has soul, and always will!
Tons and tons, of it, for sure!
From what I understood, Terry had a budding solo career at the time. So he made an understandable decision to pass on those opportunities to focus on his solo career. It's a decision 99% of singers would have made if they were in his shoes. Terry Reid is just too unlucky.
A super talent,,great voice
Let’s not forget who wrote the lyrics for stairway to heaven, as I recall it was Robert Plant
They’re not good lyrics
He had the pipes!😊
I’ve never heard of this guy, glad I’m finally finding out about him. He’s got a belter of a voice doesn’t he? Yowzuh.
He had a voice like the singer from Humble Pie.
Steve Marriott
Great story. I've never heard of Terry Reid before, but he certainly has a great voice. Reminds me of Steve Marriott. I guess timing IS everything. But, I don't think Zeppelin would have been Zeppelin without Robert Plant.
Him and Donovan recorded Superlungs. Ironically Page played on DONOVANS version.
For the record, Donovan wrote the song.
I much prefer Terry's version.
Good music...
Great voice, but i'm glad Plant became Zeppelin's front man.
Nice quote from Queen Aretha!
It ended up much better with Plant. Interesting artist though.
Never heard of him. After listening to him here, he does have a great voice, but I'm glad Robert Plant got the job.
