I cannot vouch for machetes as brush removal enough. I moved into my house in April to find my backyard overrun with bamboo, privet, and 4 kinds of ivy. If it weren't for my machete and my wife really liking the new neighborhood we might have put the house back on the market immediately.

Terävä Skrama 240 from Varusteleka in Finland. Use one myself, after it was recommend by several gardeners and landscapers in our area. Brutal blade.
Found that out of all of the machetes I have, and I have a lot, the 12 inch Tramontina has been the most useful for shrubbery and thinners wood. I believe it has to do with the thinness of the blade and how damn light it is. Also only got it for like $9 so it's been surprising in how well it performs.
Excellent video as usual, really highlights the fact that Cold Steel makes extremely weird (but highly desirable) stuff. Keep up the good work, fellas.
I'm surprised you don't stock Tramontina machetes. The wood handled ones are ok from the box, but with a bit of file work to the blade and to shape the handle to your liking they are excellent. And made in Brazil, where they're practically an edc. I believe blunt edges are left near the tips because they're often used for light digging chores also.

I like David modified a Tramontina except the wood handles held together and it works great! They are the opinel of machetes, a blank slate that begs for modification and cheap so you can modify several of them or not feel bad if one doesn’t turn out the way you wanted.

Bought a HF machete because I liked the thin blade and I put a good handle on it. Well, it twisted on me when I struck a tree larger than my thumb. It really put a shock in my hand and wrist, so I got really mad at it. I tried to break it, but couldn't! Damn, that's some good steel, worth saving. On a hunch, I cut off 2-1/2" of the end and shaped it like a Seax, with a very sharp point. All cured! Cuts great, no twist, and stays sharp!
Had no idea KnifeCenter had a TH-cam Channel but am very happy! My personal favorite machete is the Cold Steel 18" Sax Machete. It's a shame they discontinued it!

DC’s right about Tramontino machetes - great for the money. You can buy the Bolo and get a Marbles sheath all for under $30.
That was very interesting, and I appreciate you mentioning the Gerber. I happen to like Gerber, and I really hope they get their act together. Any recommendations for a budget short machete?
By far the best machete I’ve ever used was from Ontario Knife Company. Black rubber handle, black blade.
I have a Cold Steel two handed machete that is a really great brush cutter. Blade is kind of like the cane machete but set into a nylon handle that weighs nothing so you can use it one handed. Super useful!
The square spine being 90 degrees works well for digging and whacking roots without dulling your working edge also. Very useful for trail clearing and chopping down things you don't want to get too close to such as multiflora rose.
@@AnomadAlaska hmm. Blade is not the stiffest. I have thought about welding a pick onto the back edge. I mostly tangle with bittersweet vines bamboo and other invasive. The occasional bear...jk.
It's the closest thing to a lightsabre for yard and property work.

Dear Mr. Andersen & Thomas, thanks as always for a refreshing, informative, and entertaining episode. I would like to add a few observations and comments about budget machetes for gardening,. For context, I'm in the Southern Caribbean, and it's rainy season, and the tropical rainforest encroaches FAST, so I get a machete workout DAILY.
1) Although I have, use, and enjoy a large collection of machetes, all tested by doing real work in the yard and in the tropical rainforests around me, my preferred tool for gardening (and for clearing a path through actual jungle) is the Cold Steel Barong Machete. It has enough reach for almost anything, the continuous curve of the leaf-shaped blade makes it a slicing machine, the blade shape also makes sharpening and honing very easy, the handle shape makes it easy to retain the tool with or without gloves and in any weather conditions, and the ergonomics are spectacular - you can swing the thing ALL day without hand fatigue or pain. Not least of all, very little modification is needed to get it ready to do serious work. I cannot recommend it enough.*
2) My approach to sharpening machetes has been evolving and I love my current approach. A take a strop block and two carbide sanding belts, along with a small file. The file is ONLY used on occasions when I hit stones and get a bad roll or a small chip. Typically, all I ever do is use wrap the 40-grit belt around the stropping block and use use it away from the edge on either side for about 30 seconds. That's enough to get a wicked toothy, convex edge on your average machete. Just a few minutes dedicated to a dull portion of a machete will get a good working edge on it. Another minute or two with the 80-grit belt will give you a more refined edge, if you so choose.
* The only major mod I may eventually make to my Cold Steel Barong Machete will be an epoxied paracord wrap at the front of the handle, to further prevent the risk of slipping onto the blade. It's not a big risk as is, especially since I'm not using it to do stabbing of any kind, but the added security won't hurt.
Get you a Stihl HL 94 and retire the machetes

My buttonlock elementum is my new favorite knife..here in Canada mine came to a cool $120 lol for just the simple brown micarta and tumbled finish blade 😆 I work landscaping and it basically works part-time with me lol sees pretty rough action a few days a week and I just texted it to a nice sharpening last night after days of muddy landscape fabric

I have a few machete, and i gotta say my favorite machete for most of all the stuff i do is my Walmart 18 in machete. Not the best machete, sheath is nylon, but has served me well these past 4 years (even with duct tape and some needle and thread to try to stretch the its life span 😂)

David, I think I caught a minor mistake in your Bohler "K" steel mixup, You said K100, and Thomas caught you. You corrected it to K390, which I truly love. However, you then said "There's a K340 steel coming out now." Actually, Bohler K340 has been out for quite a while. I believe you meant Bohler's RIDICULOUSLY EXCITING K490 steel, which they say will have nearly the same edge holding ability, but almost TWICE the toughness. I can't WAIT! That should be awesome.

I live in the tropics, David, and the cost of a machete seldom goes above US$10 dollars. I am amazed that there was no mention of the famous Collins (Hartford, CT) brand. In our country, the Dominican Republic, all "Latin" machetes are know as "Colines". More working knives such as the canecutter have other names. Of course, Tremontina is well-known areound here, and now Collins is nearly invisible. But nobody pays more than $10 to 14 dollars a machete, no matter its intended use. Love your Ontario, BTW. It's a Japanese origin traditional style chopper which is notoriously better than kukri and other machetes. Cold Steel machetes all the way. The Thai machete for example has an extra long handle allowing multiple grip options with 1 or 2 hands and exceptional reach. Like DCA mentioned you can even get sword style blades and I've had tons of fun with the Wakizashi version. P.s. Isn't the reverse Americanized tanto shape really more of version of the Norse seax? What do y'all think?

I feel most cowboys didn't carry large fixed blades. probably more likely simple jackknives. stockman or barlow comes to mind. I got a replica of a Civil war era one blade folding knife that's pretty cool.
I always see the blunt tip of a garden machete as by design, since it is a tool to slash grass/plantation and not a weapon to stab your arch enemy. It is handy when you near the end of your yard that ended with wall/stone/pavement, you don't have to worry if your thick and blunt tip hitting wall or stone, it just shrug it off. While a sharp and pointy tip will definitely need a care after kissing those.
For moving I would absolutely go for more than one knife because guaranteed I'm going to misplace one because I'm stressed out and don't have muscle memory of the places I put knives. It's not going to get lost permanently but a month from now I'm going to find a knife on a high shelf somewhere.

long time ago at a barber shop, while the barber stropped his razor on a strap, he briefly mentioned that raising the temperature of the steel elongated the edge and gave it a finer edge. is a warm blade sharper than a cold one? and is a warm blade easier to sharpen than a cold blade?

He said a while back he didn't want to do that because he'd feel like it was 'forced' because he knows what days they're filming so he might be picking knives to show off versus actually be carrying the knife he would have normally.
Yeah, it would either be performative/not genuine since I would be picking things out for the purpose of showing. Or, it would get repetitive when I have the same pocket dump for several weeks in a row. Neither are good options as far as I'm concerned. -DCA

A decent utility knife with a couple of spare blades is the best "moving knife" IMHO. I would recommend a Milwaukee Fastback with bit driver.
Hi DCA, love the content as always. Through your videos mostly, I ended up getting a makara for trail building and maintenance to use in unison with an axe. Once I put a slimmer edge on this blade, I was quite happy with how it cut grass and large weeds while I was testing it for a few minutes in my yard. Sadly the first time I used it in the field, the handle became very loose due to the flaired tubes used to secure the handle. I was not impressed with this happening to a blade in this price point especially after only using in for an hour or two. Just to clarify, I did not use it for any chopping tasks or on any dead limbs, as this was used only on "easy use" limbing and hedge trimming. I was wondering if you have heard or seen this for yourself. Thanks again

Hey DCA. Would you recommend using a wax or wax-like product for long term storage of high carbon / non stainless blades? Even properly kept I sometimes run into oxidation issues .What are some options on the market. Ps. Every damaged fingernail has a great story..............what's yours ?
Using cheap Cold Steel machetes for years now, just gotta know how to sharpen them as sometimes the edge comes not perfect.

Hey DCA, first time asking a question. Love your show and what you are doing for the community. I would love to get the Condor K-Tact kukri with green micarta even though I would prefer to get something similar but with good stainless steel. Do you have some suggestions? Thank you.
Not many options for kukri's in stainless unless you want to spend a lot of money. Just keep it oiled and enjoy the patina would be my suggestion, the K-Tact is a good looking Kukri for that price.
The Condor Makara is badass though.
Hey DCA, can you prefer a couple of knives that are a straight edge next to the pointer finger choil. I cut up a lot of cardboard but streetch foil as well. The end of the blade is dull and I want it all the way sharp, hope you understood. Thank you
It sounds like you want a perfectly straight edge on your blade, with a finger choil directly behind it. That actually isn't as common as it probably should be.
I know of a couple: the Cold Steel Tuff Lite and the Spyderco Dragonfly Wharncliffe come to mind. I also thought of a fixed blade: the Artisan Cutlery Sea Snake.
Hey DCA and crew. I'm thinking of a machete chopper that I can use too take the place of my hatchet on camping trips here in NC. I'm really liking the My Parang Duku Chandong 10". I think I would be able to do my hatchet chores and my large knife chores with one tool. I also like the hand made look of the My Parang machetes. What say you? Thanks man.

Surprised the Gerber is not there. Almost identical to Ontario but has a saw blade on the back and a reinforced sheth. Under 30 bucks last I checked.
Hey DCA, I was curious how do you sharpen a machete? Is there certain sharpening equipment you’d recommend for that task? And would a coarse or fine edge be better for a machete?
Benchtop belt sander around 220 grit will do for a course working edge.
DCA: The Spyderco Cricket is awesome and nobody ever talks about it! My only “gripe” is that sometimes I want a little more blade and handle length. I’ve actually asked Spyderco to make a “Big Cricket”. (Locust?). Is there anything else out there with a locking 3-4” blade that is as thin as the Cricket?
Maybe the TRM Atom would work for you. The cricket is listed at .08 and the Atom at .09

Hey, DCA. How do you sharpen that Makara? I recently tried to sharpen a friend’s Condor Golok that had a lot of chips in the edge. I did a fairly good job rocking my KME stones along the edge but I think I could have done better. Thanks!
For stuff that big, electricity is your friend. Right now I use my knife grinder but before I owned that, the Ken Onion Work Sharp with the Blade Grinding Attachment makes it a really easy job -DCA

The lock on the Old Bears are nicer than the Opies, the edges and grinds on the Opinels are nicer than the OBs -DCA
Hi DCA (and everyone in the comments), any advice on sharpening chisel ground blades? I have a cold steel urban edge and I can never get it to be as sharp as I want it.
If it cuts then its sharp enough. Chisel ground edges will pysch you out because when you run a finger across them they don't feel sharp even though they'll slice just fine. Just make sure you lightly strop the back side to remove the burr

People say that open backs are easier to clean but a Q-tip will clean out either style in the exact same amount of time. So if you tend to keep other loose metal objects in your knife pocket I would definitely recommend a closed back design like the Benchmade 940.
Hey dca I have a question. Does the fox livri / libar have screws and a strong backswing? I watched a old review and the knife had pins and a weak backspring. Someone in the comments said they changed them but on the dealers I look at (boker and knives and tools since I'm in greece sadly buying from you is not a option cause of customs and fees) they have pins and I'm on edge to buy it. Does it have torx and a strong backspring?
The pivot is a torx screw, but the handle covers are pinned, I would not be concerned about the pins to be honest, its a common method for manufacturing traditional knives. From the reviews I've seen, it has a decent backspring, not super strong like a Jack Wolf but not mushy and weak like the Benchmade proper.
I have one on my wishlist and plan on getting one soon, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it based on my other Fox knives

Surprised the Imacasa machetes don’t make the line up.
Context for my question: I'm looking for a knife (or two knives) that I can have in my 'Go kit'. I have a few priorities for my criteria:
(1) It must compliment my Hatchet in some way. I have a Fiskars 14" X7 hatchet.
(2) 1 of the knives must be for bush-crafting / be able to do most general purpose food tasks, 1 knife must be for survival.
(3) Fixed-blades only.
(4) IF POSSIBLE, 1 knife that can do it all.
I've been looking at the Garberg and the Kansbol (both Morakniv), but I would really like to know my other options out there. I'm good about keeping my tools sharp.
Question: Based on the context above, what would be the best knife to look for that would compliment my hatchet?
You coined the term "flip joint" in one of your recent videos. I never knew what to call those and thats what ill call them forever! What are some of the most addictive flip joints
I'm not the first to use that term, and I think it only works when there is an actual flipper attached to it. That is why we tend to prefer the term "detent joint" -DCA
Speaking of multi tools I’d like to see a video feature the newish MKM designs. The big draw for me is the upgraded blade steel in the main knife(M390). So if DCA or Seth can get some hands on experience with a Malga 6 and report back it’s be great.
Nooooooooo! I'm waiting on a micarta Malga 6 to be in stock to get my hands on one...as soon as DCA gushes on a knife it becomes Unobtanium on the site lol
I really like the Malga 6 but I need a pair of scissors on my multi tool. Let's hope they make a Malga 7 with scissors. (and maybe a small pen blade to replace the ridiculous fork)

@@arrowheadguys7637 It often just ends up being impromptu personal grooming. But it is also a little better than a knife for snipping the odd thread that comes loose on clothing, etc.

QUESTION. What sharpeners would be best and safest for someone who owns higher end kitchen knives but has no experience sharpening and maintaining and edge? Price isn't much of a factor, and the blades aren't serrated.
Get a Spyderco Sharpmaker and a 4-sided strop with some stropping compounds.
@@Ericstraordinary The sharpmaker is a good choice, I own one, and will likely be the one I recommend. My friend for whom I asked this has never sharpened a knife in her life, and therefore a strop isn't something she's comfortable using. Thanks for the reply, and I agree these are a great combination.

David, great video. Looking back I see videos where you suggest freehand sharpening. Is that still your "go to" method or do you recommend one of the guided sharpening systems? Thanks.
I tend to freehand my larger and fixed blades. Smaller (and higher value) knives I go with a guided system.
In one form or another, I'm all freehand these days. The guided systems work great and are super consistent, but this system works for me. Smaller knives I'm pretty much exclusively strop augmented with wet-dry sandpaper for more aggressive sharpening. For big knives (anything machete-sized or bigger) and in cases where I need to reprofile an edge or remove big chips (happens to machetes on occasion), then I use my knife grinder with 2"-wide abrasive belts, then it gets its first strop with a leather belt loaded with green compound running on the grinder. I use this to create a convex edge which plays especially nicely with my hand strops for subsequent sharpenings. The only thing close to "guided" that I use these days is my trusty Spyderco Sharpmaker. I only really use this on our steak knives anymore or a cheap kitchen knife, but my higher end kitchen knives all get done with my stropping system. Cheers! -DCA

I'm looking for a solid lower priced otf. I can't afford a Microtech and was very disappointed with the Boker otf. Any suggestions on a lower cost otf ?
My advice would be to just save up. You can buy three $100 knives and you probably won't be satisfied with any off them. Save the $300 and get what you want. Buy once, cry once.

Hey DCA thanks for the advice on the best moving knife, my question is what is the best way to clean your moving knife after opening boxes? I always seem to be getting a bunch of tape residue all over my knife and wanted to know the best way to clean it off.
Gasoline always works well for me. Actually typically use 2-stroke pre-mix, figure the oil can't be a bad thing.
My go-to is Zippo fluid. But Ballistol, acetone, Goo-Gone and WD-40 can all work too.
I just use rubbing alcohol because it's great for removing adhesives and also fingerprints/oils, plus the added bonus of disinfectant
I've got liquid alcohol in a spritzer that lives in my backpack. Great for hand sanitization as well as breaking down adhesives. -DCA

I would like to see a episode of knifes with the best fall shut actions its always so hard to figure out with out laying hands on the knive but they way every one shops online it's very difficult thanks hope to see this on a episode
Crossbar, compression and shark locks. Some might require a little adjustment to the pivot, but most will fall shut after 30 minutes of fidgeting if they don't right out of the box. All my shark locks are 100% free fall shut out of the box because of the design.
