      I have an original wave and it is so much of a chunk that I just stopped carrying it unless I had a specific job that needed pliers. On the other hand as soon as I discovered SwissQlip makes a pocket clip for 91mm Victorinox I have been EDCing my Victorinox Explorer and haven't looked back.
      I do like my leatherman wave... but my day to day just doesn't require pliers very often at all.

    I think the "pet peeve" point is a very valid one. There are settings where you don't want to be seen as a "knife person". A bright yellow Victorinox is about the least threatening a knife can get.

      I couldn't agree more on the more superior and effective can opener on Wenger compared to Victorinox'. While we don't use can opener much these days (sardines come in tins with easy open lid), the wenger can opener is useful for punching hole and opening packaging boxes.

    My 1st pocket knife was a Swiss Army & I still have it today (30 yrs +) but I got a Leatherman Surge a few yrs ago and that thing is a beast of a multi tool! Definitely 10 times heavier but that’s what I carry in my backpack every day. Still love my Victorinox Hunter in the black scales and love that for my outdoor adventures

    Every time I’ve tried to “give up” my SAK, I never stick with it. Like you, I always have a SAK regardless of whatever else I’m carrying. Even if I’m doing stuff where I know I’ll be using my Wave or Swisstool Spirit, I still have a my trusty little SAK. I’m curious whether the T-4 will stick long term with you. I might rotate it in here and there, but I know me and I know I’ll always go back. My SAK ranger lives in my bag every single day. If I don’t have my bag, it’s a Climber or a Compact. I’ll rotate everything else, but not that.

    The one hand opening of every tool, the locking of every tool, better blade steel, and arguably a better toolset has the T4 as the winner for me. I think you may implement the T4 as your edc after you carry it regularly!

    • @etherealicer
      @etherealicer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think the toolset is a big point and that is where Victorinox pulls ahead with their countless models. While a T4 easily can/could replace a S18 (or the Mountaineer which is probably the closest Vic model to the T4) it cannot replace a Cybertool. Pretty much the same problem as for the Boker CityTool (really great tools, with a great blade (IHMO best in this style of tools), but the absence of models always brings me back to Victorinox.

      @@etherealicer It's mainly personal preference (as everyone knows) which is very subjective to each individual. It depends on what one prioritizes. I prioritize one-hand-open capability, so I'd instantly go Leatherman if forced to pick only one. Obviously one could carry both if they wanted both. My priority is always *SELF-DEFENSE comes FIRST above comfortable convenience.* Yes, even for a smaller blade as you see on that Leatherman, I want to be able to open it with one hand if a dog is munching on my other arm, just as one (of many) selfdefense situations one can find themselves in today. I carry a blade on each side for each hand. I am a prepper first, then after that the secondary convenience tools for fixing little things. I've been in my fair share (though rare in between) selfdefense situations, and I learn from them.
      I was at a STOP sign on my mountain bike once and someone's pitbull got loose, ran at me barking, I sat still and watched as the dog ran up to me, barked a few times, saw that I wasn't budging, then he ran back to his owner (who was yelling at him). That is a situation you want to learn from. Thankfully the dog was not your stereotypical abused, aggressive pitbull, but they're out there, and you want to be ready if one ever latches onto your arm. So, in that case, two blades on me, one on each side. I have pepper spray as well, but not that great if it's already munching on my arm. 🤔🤣
      Anyway, I hope everyone out there starts to think and thus prepare more defensively, not so complacently. 👍

    • @etherealicer
      @etherealicer 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Northanteus I'm not complacent, I just have enough training with knives to know I don't want to use it to fight (and I prefer grappling, more effective at neutralizing a threat). That said, the escalation of violence is part of the reason people feel so unsafe. Call me a liberal/socialist, but helping people so they don't take drugs (e.g. a working healthcare system, so people don't get addicted to painkillers) seems like a much better approach than to declare war on drugs.

    I recently switched to a Victorinox Camper and have been happy with the decision. It fits my needs better than my leatherman squirt which I have enjoyed for quite sometime. One thing I like about the camper is that the saw tip sticks out just enough to identify it by feel and the rest of the tools do not. It makes it easy it grab it and open the saw without looking. I cut quite a few tiny branches that grow into the middle of our wooded trails. It is great that the mini saw is functional and then I don’t need to carry some huge saw when 99% it is needed.
    Like you, I carry separate blade but lately seem to prefer small fixes blades around 3” or so.

    First a belated thank you for answering my most serious question in episode 98. I was so star struck when YOU David, read my question!! 😊
    I have a feeling that you are going back to the Victorinox. If not, then I’m guessing that it will take residence in the key bowl by the front door, so that you can make an easy switch when going out in the woods.
    Back to my original question. I forgot to mention that, even though I drive an eleven year old Kia picanto, my car is operating key free. 😅 But, it probably still is the best choice of knife for cutting off the engine. 😂

  • @highdesert50
    @highdesert50 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The Leatherman T4 is very nice modern interpretation but it is about 30% heavier than the Wenger/VIctorinox S18. Although useful, the contoured grips of the S18 add considerable width to the knife and something like the slightly longer and less expensive Fieldmaster will give you close the same implements as the S18 yet in a narrower width. Alternatively, if you like the length of the S18, something like the Tinker Small will fit into your watch pocket at a fraction of the weight, size, and cost of the others and you will likely not need a pouch. Looking forward to your exploration.

Since I also have a full tool kit in my classroom, one of the things with my Wave+ is the bit extender to go from the Leatherman slot bit to a standard hex bit. I'd prefer Swiss Army steel over 420. Dad let me pick out a Mauser hunting folder when I was a kid. Because I took a switchblade with a comb insert, and used a paring knife blade I broke that belonged to grandma. So there is that. Carry a swisschamp, cause sheaths are plentiful for them, and a solid fixed blade like a Buck woodsman.

    Not to be insulting but the difference between the Leatherman and Swiss Army knife is the type of person that would carry them. If you want to carry a trendy knife that can file or clean fingernails while presenting a fashion statement, you get a Swiss Army knife. If you are more of a construction/field worker that needs a rugged set of tools that you will use, get a Leatherman. Two different demographics. Like many long-time users have said, Victorinox has turned into a fashion statement and are leaving the loyal fans of the tool behind.

    The Leatherman would be more appealing to me if one side of the file was their diamond file texture. As it is, I think it will be terrible for using as a nail file. Do you think Victorinox will ever make a Cadet X? You know that if they did you would never be able to keep them in stock. That would be the perfect folder compliment for me. I'd miss the scale tools, but I can find another way to carry those if I need to. Perhaps I'll cut little slots in my wallet and slide them in there.

Primarily I want the scissors and can opener for camping and such. Pricing is also typically better for the Victorinox that I would chose to use/buy.

    For us who don't use a belt pouch, and use only their pockets, one of the most important factors is the weight of multi-tool. And, even if you didn't mention that in the video, it seems to me that the SAK is a bit more practical in such regard.

What I love about it is that it's a little bit bigger than most victorinoxes and it has some small pliers that come very useful but don't make the tool bulky like leather-mans. Mr. Andersen, you've got me looking cross-eyed at the T4 now. I've been carrying a Victorinox Ranger, almost exclusively, as my EDC multitool. One of the main reasons I love it so much is that it has a serious file - nails, wood, metal, whatever - Honey Badger don't care. The file on the T4 is smaller than that, but has some of that robust capability. Also, the biggest down side to the Ranger, in my view, is that it doesn't have a Phillips head screwdriver. Lo and behold, the T4 does. Yeah, I think I need to check this out.

    Great video, DCA, thank you! I've had my SAK since 1999, but I like it for sentimental reasons, not ease of use reasons. I've always found slipjoint multi tools in general to be so much more trouble than they're worth. That said, in my opinion a good Leatherman or Gerber or Schrade multitool will always serve you better and be more comfortable and safe to use than a SAK. They're such an overrated multitool and always have been. Yes they're super compact, but that's about it.

    I've carried the Huntsman SAK as my EDC for years. My wife just got me the Free T4 and I have carried it for a month now. It maybe my new EDC. I have several SAK knives, but this T4 seems to hit my need... one thing I really like is the pocket clip... the thing I miss is probably the toothpick, I actually use it from time to time. great review.

    I know I'm late to the party on this one. Been doing research on getting a decent multi tool. The ones that were purchased for me by my very loving husband are just too large for my pocket and to carry around with me everywhere. Been looking at the Free t4 and the Gerber splice and dime, as well as SAK. Mom of three kids, looking for that everyday tool that will take care of small repairs and take care of small household tasks. Leatherman seems great!
    I'm just wondering, did you end up switching your EDC to the Leatherman, or did you go back to the Victorinox? I looked for videos to see what the results were, but could not find it. Wondering what your final thoughts were:). Loved this video! Very gentle comparison! Thank you!

    I'd prefer the CUSTOM MOD to the can opener to make it more of a rescue hook cutter .......
    I'd like o see a few more MODS as options ... but , I can grind and use a Dremel ... so ??
    BUT in all the FOUR DECADES of SAK ownership ... I absolutely HATE how often the springs break ! ! ! !
    I am just starting to carry a Wenger style bar instead of spring .. will see how that holds up ...
    ( do NOT like the serrated scissor blade that comes with that option though ???? )

    Hey DCA and Reverse Tom-to! I’m looking for a new camp folder. Under $150. I want something easy to open and close with one hand. I’m considering the Demko AD 20.5 or the Civivi Conspirator. Anything else I should be looking at? Thanks!
    Oh and don’t worry, I still use my Casstrom no. 10 for “real” camp tasks.

    Hi DC,
    I have no experience with either so my opinions are sort of more academic. However I can make some observations as I have used other models from both brands for decades.
    Firstly, the tools on the Victorinox are just in a different league from the Leatherman tools. For example, the Leatherman scissors never ceases to irritate me with its fiddlyness! Yuck! Also, the awl/reamer of the SAK is unbeatable in every respect! The Victorinox philosophy for its blade steel, shape and design has been the subject of reams of comments and discussions, and they have steadfastly stuck to their guns throughout, and they still outsell just about everyone! It obviously works!
    Lastly, the impact of the work done by Felix Immler and his books/videos about Victorinox knives clearly demonstrates what the knives are capable of. Mostly, the limitations reside more in the minds of the users themselves, not the tool!
    One point, however, is clear. If one's needs include the use of a pair of pliers, and if that is important to one, then the Leatherman does enter the arena very strongly. That's why I have one! However, for the outdoors, that need dissipates quite a bit. If one needs something for making traps/snares with wire, a pliers is needed, but the Victorinox pliers are designed for that specific task, and that levels the playing field.
    Thanks DC, and my 10 cents' worth!
    Cheers

    Swiss vs USA! Hello from the Netherlands !'ve been watching this channel for some time now, and it occured to me that you always say 'made in the USA' when applicable. I was wondering what this means exactly (for you as Americans) besides the country of manufacture. Does it mean a certain level of quality? In The Netherlands we regard 'made in Germany' as a quality indication for example (and considering we are arch rivals, especially at soccer, they probably deserve it)

    Nothing wrong with both of these tools,but i believe that Victorinox has to step up their steel game and introduce some upgrades ,at least at some models. And Leatherman should too and has done in a few tools. I would like to see a classic SD style Leatherman ,something that would be built like a tank but in keychain size. That would be an incredible addition to the Leatherman collection and it would be nice to see an opponent to the Classic SD. But please, leave the base metals behind , time for an upgrade.

    I'm not saying this comment is comparable to DCA's point in this video. However, I have carried a skeletool cx since their conception back in like 2007 or 2008 while is was in the teams way back when. I used to use the driver end to punch holes for det cord in certain applications. It always seemed to have everything I needed when coupled with my primary fixed blade. Not to mention it was light and portable. Big plus when carrying upwards to 80 pounds of gear in the desert. I still carry one today and have extras for camping, hiking and emergency jump bags and kits ect. I never leave home without one. Thomas understands. At least he used to. Lol

    I come seeking guidance from you fine people. I’ve been carrying a zt0350 for about three years now and it’s been amazing. I’ve thrown it, beat it, abused it, and it’s still kicking, but I’m getting a little tired of the recurve. So I’m looking for something to take it’s place, I don’t mind chunky, and my budget is pretty flexible so feel free to shoot me some ideas if any of you know a knife that might be able to take it’s place. (Preferably made in the USA, but obviously not mandatory)

    Heya DCA, need some advice.
    I have a mini griptilian that is too small for my comfort, as i have Large to XL hands.
    I do love the crossbar style lock, but would be willing to look into any finger safe closing method.
    Id also like something that i can eventually upgrade the scales to something more premium than black plastic.
    Any suggestions?

    A lot of good points for the two of them. Where I work I wouldn’t pull out any bigger of a blade then my Letherman Skeletool .Everyone seems to relate to a SAK and it has a less threatening look to non knife people. Please give us an update on what you think of the PS4 after using it for a while.

  • @kettchuk918
    @kettchuk918 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The T4 has tools that are usable, not punch dagger style or off-centre, everything’s one handed and locks, there’s nothing on it you don’t need like corkscrews or tin openers, the blade is thicker ,stronger and slices cleanly and it sits in pocket on the flimsiest shorts no problem. If the weight means you struggle to use it and I speak here as someone who’s far from a body builder, you need to work out more, try using a bigger teaspoon for stirring your tea…baby steps.
    The one handed opening means you can open it, cut whatever you need and put it away without anyone noticing, you don’t need to two hand it which is much more obvious.
