      @@JuanRamirez-bj6qejust got one and no I wouldn’t say plastic like, it is carbon fiber so I’d say you’ll notice the difference in feel but not in durability. You will notice it feels like a toy because of how light it is and once you use the action a few times it plays smoothly. You have to go into it expecting it to feel that way due to the carbon fiber but I have a friend that ram over his with an f250 and it didn’t hurt it at all.

    Got one of these 2 weeks ago and I keep reaching for it before all my other fancy $$$ Ti knives for daily carry. That CF Elite is so strong and light I hope they make more variations out of it. If you've ever handled a HK USP it's a familiar feel, and that polymer has is going on 30+ years of torture. If you get a Shootout and it has blade play or rattles when you shake it (open or closed) don't settle for it. When I got mine at the store it was solid, I had them open up another brand new one and it rattled and had noticeable blade play.

  • @LarryGanz
    @LarryGanz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    I'm still carrying mine around daily, with an occasional rotation to something else, but I keep coming back to the Shootout. I like the idea of them making a second model with aluminum scales, like they do with the Bailout, but I would add that to my collection and not replace this one.

    Just received my Shootout in the mail. I don't see any toy like appearance. At 2.8 oz it's just a tad lighter than many OTF's, where some reviews whine about it being so light it could almost fly away in a wind. The Mesa Red Grivory is very solid and not cheap in any way (in MY opinion). Best deal of all ???It's a Benchmade and I can send it to them at any point in time to get it sharpened or repaired if required. Oh...and this one doesn't have a glass breaker...which is basically useless ( I work with a Sheriff and work many accidents and have NEVER had to break a window, just sayin). Totally enjoy your reviews...and I will NEVER take it apart, as advised.

  • @Ephem13
    @Ephem13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You are spot on. CF elite is a cf reinforced grivory. Grivory is an injection molded nylon family polymer. Both grivory and cf elite are durable because the flex allows them to absorb impacts. That being said, the feel of plastics are strongly associated with cheap thanks to decades of poorly made plastic products.

      It's also a weight thing as humans will automatically presume something that weighs more is higher quality. A huge study was done on this in the 70s about restaurant utensils when different types of metals started to be used.

    One thing no one talks about is slider Botton play. My Ultratech has slight button play when closed and dramatically more in the open position. My Benched Shootout has zero button play and is tight as a drum in both directions. Yes, a plastic handle feels cheaper but it's super strong and much lighter for EDC in workout/basketball shorts. Don't sleep on the Shootout!

    • @metal_complex

      @@metal_complex True, but blade play doesn't make much difference either and it's a main talking point in all of these OTF videos yet no one ever mentions slider play. Just saying, slider play is a worth mentioning when it comes to $300-$500 knives. Great videos btw!

    This knife is the first OTF that I've actually liked the aesthetics of and am considering buying. Most of the other ones just look like mall Ninja isht to me. Especially most of microtechs blade shapes. Also it's an actual full size knife with a full size blade. Blade to handle ratio is nice. Looks like a knife that could actually be used for many of the things I use knives for, more than just opening a package or flicking in and out to show a friend. On top of all that I think it's one of the better values considering the amount of knife that you get for the price taking into account the average price of OTFs and also the price of the M4 Bailout.

    If it was a drop point, I would buy it right now. Hopefully they make a variant in the future...I'd also like to see a Bailout with a Bugout blade. But you know BM: Operators gonna operate and the tanto style is tactically tactical...so bend the knee to the iron throne. I'm kinda glad their axis lock patent expired. I see lots of innovation from the value brands coming down the pipe...

  • @freshjnew
    @freshjnew ปีที่แล้ว

    I do really like this knife. It's light. It's smooth. Action is a little loud because it is plastic. But it's got a great blade, a tanto is very functional if you do a lot of scraping. The tension on the switch is great if you like to show your knife off as I have to tell most people to push harder. I got the blue one. Very good. Reliable. My blade was also perfectly centered(I think benchmade got tired of hearing about one, please complain more).
    Overall, I'd recommend it. It's my first benchmade otf and also my first ever otf(aside from a cheap knockoff microtech a buddy gave me as a gift) and I cannot say I'm disappointed in anything except the legality of carrying one in some places.

I contacted Benchmade, about an OTF knife and after about 30 minutes of back and forth conversation was able to finally get a confession that there was a batch of bad Springs! When you're in operator and you drop a knife and it ceases to operate it's useless! But wait, I didn't drop it, I was trying to brake it in and it broke after 8 deployments ! Benchmade asked if I dropped it because that could cause it to derail!!!

    I purchased a Benchmade Shootout after watching some YT reviews. It is my first OTF knife. I rec'd it Monday, unboxed and started to "play" with it... it would only retract about 50% of the time. If the knife was pointed up, it worked in and out about 90% of the time. If the knife was point down, it would shoot out but rarely retract. I was astounding at the poor performance. I found the thumb release/retract very stiff and left my thumb sore. I'm hoping it was just a lemon that wasn't well inspected... nonetheless I shipped it back today.
    My EDC is a Benchmade Griptilian which I absolutely love; so much so, I bought a second to have on hand when I send the original in to be sharpened.
    I want a OTF however after this experience, I will no longer purchase online. I'll have to be hands on before I buy.

One of the pivot screws must have been installed cross threaded, because my torx bit chewed up the head. i got the other 3 screws off no problem, and a keeper and spring came out. So now i'm waiting for my pivot nut and screws ordered from Amazon to come in before I drill out the cross threaded one. i already chewed up the handle near the screw head a bit trying to dremel a flat blade purchase on the bolthead. sigh. expensive mistake. I went there and took mine apart. I struggled hard but got it back together after some swearing and yelling. Now, someone tell me what justifies the price other than the OTF tax. There is nothing intricate or complicated about this build. Fit and finish is fine, but injection molded handles are about as minimal as it gets in terms of production time and finishing effort. The materials are good, but the cost of materials is a small factor in the price of a knife (although production companies inflate materials upgrade costs). I just don’t see signs of extra production steps, intensive or complex finishing, or anything that would suggest that this is a relatively expensive knife other than the materials alone, which I’ve already covered. They were a good choice for the design intent of this knife. It’s a good tool, it’s light, it’s strong, but it probably required less production effort than a typical BM locking folder with a satin blade finish. I have one- I like it, but I don’t get the price other than to bolster perceived value through hype and confirmation of quality in the materials.

My new 710 limited with Magnacut blade and aluminum handles may be the best feeling knife I own, but this one may be the worst feeling knife. It's a toy for sure. The reason I bought it is because I wanted a knife with Cru Ware, I got it and I'm happy about that but what a bummer they didn't go with the same feeling the 710 gives. Oh well, maybe some day I'll want light knife.

    So, it took me 10 mins to disassemble and reassemble… once I found the springs 😂😂😂 but that was my fault as I took it apart in a chair while smoking with it sitting on a screwdriver case in my lap. So.
    I am a manager of a manufacturing facilities maintenance department, so I am very mechanically inclined to say the least.
    Use the very little main spring tension of the blade at the closed and open positions to hold the plate in place, then use a micro flat head screw driver to go through the spring, guide it to the retention hole in the plate, then remove the driver from the spring, place the flat of the screw driver across the springs opening, use it to compress the spring while tilting the driver parallel to the plate while pressing the driver into the slot once the spring is compressed enough for the driver to enter the gap. Use another small tipped driver to hold the spring down while you remove the flathead. Then, very carefully actuate the knife to the other position and use the light main spring tension to hold this plate in place as well, then repeat the process. I started on the glass breaker end.
    Hope this can help you guys!

    She was much smoother after I removed some of the small bits of plastic stuck between the pieces from its breakin period. CF-Nylon can be a bit brittle due to the CF so it is to be expected. Aluminum would indeed make this thing a god tier OTF.
    My only issue really is the pocket clip digs into the meat of my palm pretty bad. To the point I flipped it to the opposite side and carry it clipped to my pocket watch pocket with the handle outside the pocket.

    I’m sorry but if you pay $300 for this knife you already been held up and robbed by a knife maker. If you keep $20 pr less in cash in your wallet , you can get robbed in the street 15 times and still just be breaking even,so spend the money on a pocket pistol in 9mm.

    It's great when a company offers a lifetime warranty, but a non-electronic device should be user serviceable. In an emergency, prepper/grid down situation, or if the company goes out of business down the line and you can't send it in, you need to be able to work on it without special equipment or a degree in engineering. Now the price has gone up past $290.

    I would say the only time it’s appropriate to use proprietary fasteners and screws would be in an instance like this, to severely discourage people from disassembling the knife. Still, not a great idea to own a lot of things you can’t work on yourself. Eventually they will stop making parts and if it breaks it will be junk

    • @Cahwai
      @Cahwai 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      the hardship to produce titanium isn’t easy once so ever. In an average machine you can make 20 ish alumnium scales and 2-4 titanium scales a day (That’s before you have imperfections)

    • @JustKnifeThings
      @JustKnifeThings 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cahwai If that's the case, why does titanium dominate premium folding knives instead of aluminum? There is something different between the folding knife category and the OTF knife category that must account for the difference but so far I haven't heard an answer.

    • @Cahwai
      @Cahwai 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JustKnifeThings i also have a copy and paste that’s somewhat on topic for this talking about the spyderco stovepipe from a knife maker i’ll be pasting below:
      These are the same people that say "just make it out of titanium & charge $40 extra for it..."
      They know nothing about what it takes to make something. Taiwan isn't China. They actually pay their workers.
      So a normal machine with a good operator can make 30 pairs of aluminum handles per day. It's usually more like 20-25 pairs.
      Guess how many titanium handles it can make?
      Four. That's peak. Except you never get four. It's more like 2-3.
      Now, that's actual handles with two sides like what we make. I believe much of the Spyderco stuff is flat on the inside, which means one operation. If it's milled on the inside at all, then it's two ops, which is very slow because it's loaded twice with double the shit that can go wrong.
      The other expense on that stovepipe is the blade. Normally it would be loaded into a grinder to be finished - but that blade is definitely milled. It's the only way to get those decorative bits on it & the prybar on the back of the blade. That's a whole other machining process, on hardened steel no less. Those custom pivot screws? Another machine process. Custom pivot collar? A machine that could be making handles is now making pivot collars.
      All that stuff adds up really quick. Custom knives have a bunch of small parts not suited to production. It's easy to make a few pivot collars for a custom knife; but in a production shop, you need
      thousands of them. That means using a machine, that could be making more knives, just to make a single part. The math just doesn't add up on things like that, so there is a cost to it.
      It's like machined clips. You're taking a machine making handles for entire knives, & making clips on it. So instead of 30 knife handles at the end of the day, you have a handful of clips. You can obviously make way more with 50% of a knife than you can with 10% of one that most people overlook anyways lol. That's the business side of it.

    • @JustKnifeThings
      @JustKnifeThings 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cahwai That still doesn't explain why the same wouldn't apply to OTFs. We have two categories of knife - OTF and folder, and people will pay premium price for either - hundreds of dollars. But one uses almost all aluminum and the other uses almost all titanium. So it isn't a production cost thing and it isn't a retail price thing because the same conditions would apply to the makers and customers of either category of knife. So far i still don't have an answer to why one category uses one metal and one category uses the other metal even though the comparative expense and work and retail price factors would apply to either. There is an answer out there that compares not titanium to aluminum, but OTF to folder.
