Chevys 5.7 4 bolt main mine is a 1988 with 754,671 miles all gaskets have been replaced and timing chain, and the rodand main bearings at 500 thousand nothing elseis an amazing engine, the straight 6 250, as much as it kills me to say but the Ford 4.9 straight 6 Ford screwed themselves by getting rid of it, Oh and the Ford 3.5 ecoboost are not as reliable as you may think. They have a bad habit of throwing connecting rods even with great maintenance it's more of a programming issue in the ecu and tcu more than anything. Just thought I'd give you a heads up on that. The saab 4cyl and v6 turbos are extremely reliable as well

Let’s not forget that the 1UZ costs over a billion to engineer. Lexus/Toyota was not playing. Another factor that’s incredible is that it was also a closed decked design.

Even a lot of car enthusiast hear in the ASEAN countries use the 1UZ as a engine swap for 1990s corollas that are used for track or drag racing. Just goes to show that no matter what kind of use or purpose, the 1UZ can keep up and keep running

Toyota spent 10 yrs and 1 billion dollars to make a smooth V8. Ford spent 1 yr and maybe a few 100 thousand dollars to make an in-lnline 6 (1965 Ford 300).

In 83 I bought a 78 bare bone’s Corolla for my college car.
It had 70K miles on it when I bought it from my sister as it was her college car. She bought it from my grandparents who bought it new.
I promptly changed the oil, filter, the transmission grease and the rear differential grease.
Back then we had conventional oil, so it was changed every 3K miles and every 30K miles I changed the transmission and differential grease.
After Grad School I had a LOT of student loans so I kept driving my Corolla.
Around 350K miles the front seat was worn out and the differential was beginning to howl, so I got an old Los Angeles phone book and put it in the drivers seat. I bought some very dense foam and front seat covers to hold the foam in place.
I removed the rear seat and stuffed foam behind it and reinstalled the rear seat.
At around 400K miles the vinyl flooring was worn out and the White paint on the floor was worn down to bare metal, so I bought carpeted floor mats for the front.
The rear vinyl seats had cracked at the top so I put a tan sheet over the rear seat.
In 02 it finally died with 488K miles.
I promptly replaced my 78 Corolla with a new Camry and drove it until my needs changed so in 11 I replaced my 02 Camry with a new RAV4 Limited with the 3.5L V6, 4WD and drove it until I bought my 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed with the Premium and Technology pkgs.
Since I retired I generally drive only 6-8K miles per year and I plan on driving my 23 TRD until I die.
I’m quite sure that my wife will still be using my TRD to plow the 5-7 feet of snow off our private road until she too passes away.
That’s pretty good for driving over 40 years and only needing to buy 4 daily drivers during my lifetime.

Corolla is king !! Have my Corolla at 366k miles and going! I have to fix the upper control arms and axles but everyone tells me not to fix it but this gave me even more motivation to fix my car and use it until it can’t drive no more!!

    • @Doc1855
      @Doc1855 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@DAVID-by6ri I had to replace a lot of the suspension in my 78 Corolla at around the 400K mile mark.
But after that many miles, it was time. And I still drove it for another 88K miles.
It was an Awesome car !
My grandparents sold it to my sister in 81 for her college car for $950, because that’s all she got out of her 73 Celica that was worn out.
My sister then sold it to me for only $500 in 83.
So I know that I definitely got my money out of it.
When it hit the 300K mile mark my grandpa told me that if he knew that it was going to last that long, he would have kept it and bought my sister a different car, but he was glad that it had gotten both my sister and myself through college.
My grandpa died in 92 and in 02 when my Corolla died my grandma was glad that I bought an 02 Camry.

      I've had 2 cars in 32 years:
1992 Subaru Brumby, purchased new, I traded it 16 yr old / 330,000 km (engine was still FINE) in on a 2nd hand 2006 Holden VZ ute in 2008. At 18 yrs of age, it's holding up far better than the subaru did, albeit only 230,000 km's. My only regret is I wasn't more attentive to servicing, and did at one point run it WAY LOW on oil. The "modern" engines are much less forgiving to extended service intervals than old carby ones.

The Ford 4.6 V8 and Toyota 5.7 3UR-FE would be worthy additions to this list. In fact, having owned both I'd pick the 5.7 over the 22R. It'll last just as long without having to replace the timing chain. Nostalgia picks the 22R, but objectivity picks the 3UR-FE.
Equally, the old V8 from the Panther platform on the Ford side could replace the 3.5L Ecoboost.

Ignition coils need replacement every 100,000 miles or so, as well. When I did the VCG at 150,000 miles, the cams looked like they were barely broken in.
I had an older Buick with the 3.8. Not supercharged or turbo'ed. That thing was still going strong at 278,000 miles. Spark plugs and oil changes. That's all it ever needed.

Old engines used to put the intake and exhaust on the same side to intentionally get the intake hot. This is because primitive carburators didn't vaporize fuel very well, which is one reason they had to be warmed up for a bit before driving.

Sadly you have to take the 3.5 Ecoboost off the list, due to bad CAM Phaser designs which have led to failures at around 100k miles across the board. It’s not catastrophic, but replacing the phasers is a pretty major engine tear down.

That mazda 2.0 and 2.5l naturally aspirated should be on this list, I have multiple customers with over 200000 miles on them, and 2 that are almost at 300000 miles, granite those 300000 mile ones use some oil, but it's still very impressive for how much the cars cost, mazda 6, cx5, cx30 and multiple other models I'm sure I didn't mention. The ones I've seen go really far are 2014 and newer, they had a similar motor in earlier mazda tribute, ford escape and models like that that are also reliable, only issue thos earlier models had (rarely) was a crach in the block between cylender 2 and 3.

@4:27 Is an error. The major maintenance on earlier Toyota engines is the timing BELT & water pump replacement, NOT the timing chain.

    • @roymeyer6837
      @roymeyer6837 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

@@tonelocrian that's usually the case, but not with the 22R. It was a timing chain engine and was intended to be a lifetime, non maintenance item, but it turned out the timing chain guides would wear out and cause the chain to loosen. If not changed at around 100k mile intervals, it would eventually break. It's the one serious flaw not many people are aware of with those otherwise bulletproof engines.

I’ve had two Toyota trucks with the 22RE. And all I can say is that I’m not impressed with its reliability.
Another thing worth mentioning here is that there was never a SOHC Honda B-series engine. All were DOHC. There were, however, VTEC and non-VTEC versions. But the VTEC versions were no less reliable. If anything, they were actually significantly sturdier motors.

The Mercedes M133 engine that is used in these:
    - A 45 AMG, W176, 2013 - 08/2015
    - CLA 45 AMG, C117, 2013 - 08/2015
    - GLA 45 AMG, X156, 2014 - 08/2015
This is just an awesome engineered 360 hp, turbocharged 2.0 liter inline four-cylinder.
The cooling system is based on the one found in the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG - it runs up to 15 °C cooler than the weaker 2019 W177 A35 AMG with "only" 320 hp (it rarely reaches over 100 °C in oil temperature).
On top of that the cooling system is enhanced with an additional cooler, and regulating transmission fluid temperature is integrated in with the engine cooling system.
The M133 also receives forged pistons and a forged crankshaft optimized for low rotating inertia and low friction. The cylinder walls are coated with twin-wire arc spray, a technology that was developed by Mercedes-Benz AMG and first used in the M156 6.2-liter V-8, and is known as Nanoslide.
The A45 AMG is force-fed by a Garett turbocharger. An air-to-water intercooler reduces the intake temperature.
Mercedes introduced with these models the "4 Matic" all wheel drive system which gives a powerful feeling with excellent traction.
Plus every A45 AMG and A45 S AMG from 2013 to 2022 was the most powerful 2.0 litre I4 engine in a mass-production vehicle worldwide. ✨🏆✨

That 3800 on a transverse mount FWD platform can be easy too maintain. Until it is time to change the spark plugs. The rear bank is a bear , especially the first time. The time I spent wrestling the boots off those three spark plugs was ridiculous they were absolutely glued on and no space to work with( that is with the upper engine mounts released and a jack strap to rotate it as far as it would go) . Once the boot was off it's tedious. There is just enough room to get the socket on and use an open ended wrench to turn it just enough to flip the wrench 180° and repeat until the plug is nearly out because turning it by hand was nearly impossible. With 120K on it i think is was the first time it was done. I couldn't believe how far gone they were 2 to 3 times the proper gap. The funny part is the super charged engine didn't even seem to care. As it was the actual problem that I was addressing at the time was the accelerator pedal was shot ...2004 GTP drive by wire. Anyway the rest of the car is pretty much done and now I have a car I can't crush because I know someone wants that low mile supercharged 3800 for their Fiero. Yeah the car looks good from the outside sans the big dent in the front fender. But living in through many Wisconsin winters rotted the underside from the inside out from the moisture condensation down there while sleeping in it.
I was surprised that the 2.5 L BMW M-50 wasn't on the list too. Same thing 275K miles running strong on a car that needs alot of other work in a body that is not looking so great.

Not made in the numbers of these ten giants, but still a beast of an engine, able to be easily wound up to two oe three times its factory output - or more.
