  • Short tut on how to manually add an outline in Maya. In this case used for rendering with the Hardware 2.0 renderer.
    Sorry for the audio pops and sloppy english ;-;
    I need to get better at recording tutorials.

    Few notes:
    -A much easier and dynamic way I've found to control outline width is to select the outline mesh and go to Modelling > Edit Mesh > Transform. Then go to the channel box with the mesh selected, to the polyMoveVertex node, and change the Local Translate Z to a small value. This way is much easier and you can easily change the width again at any time.
    - Even if the meshes are in the exact same position, copying weights can be a bit inaccurate when the outline mesh is already extruded, so you can use blendshapes instead! Instead of editing the width of the outline mesh directly, do it through a blendshape. This way the main outline mesh's vertices will remain in the same position as the main mesh, so the copying of weights will be seamless. Create the blendshape before binding and copying weights. This also lets you change the outline's width in other software, as blendshapes are compatible across different software.
    - To reverse the normals you can also simply check the Opposite checkbox, but that's a Maya thing, so it won't do for exporting the model out of Maya.
    - You can use a simple Lambert material instead and work with the incandescence attribute while all others are set to black.

      hi how to control outline width with vertex colors? That's how the guilty gear devs did it!

    Incredible friend, I am Latin American and I am learning 3D, you have taken me out of one of my biggest doubts in this journey of learning Maya. Greetings, thank you very much for your help. I had to translate the video but it was worth it.

    Your 3d models are gorgeous! The dark Ori v2 is one of the coolest models I've ever seen! Ever think about doing a time lapse video of how you create these? It would be very interesting to see your work flow!

    So simple and informative!! Thank you so much! even though maya has its own toon shader now, I wanted to find a way to outline that works with other renderers. Thank you so much!

      Nope! Unless the main mesh is too complex or has bad geo, it should work correctly.

    I'm curious, how would one go about getting blendshapes to be able to distort the outline as well?

    • @budgetmelodies5459
      @budgetmelodies5459  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like for a more sketchy/stylized kind of line? With blendshapes, you'd just have to have one or more blendshapes with distorted versions of the outline (pulling a fraction of the vertices along their normals more than the others), and then you can blend the blendshapes or animate them. Of course how much you can do will depend on the available vertices.

    • @daisyfairy42
      @daisyfairy42 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@budgetmelodies5459 Sort've that, yes! I have more complex character model built in a few pieces, and their expressions are blendshapes.
      I actually ended up doing some testing shortly after commenting (I was in class lol, doing this for a thesis film), and can confirm that face blendshapes can be hooked up to the outline just fine, but I haven't fine tuned any weight painting to really get a feel for how well it works.
      Either way that leaves me with 2 blendshapes per expression (base mesh + outline mesh) that I think I'm going to try to control with an SDK to keep it easier to use.
      I'm totally open to ideas/thoughts, but can gladly report back if I get it to work nicely! Your video's been super helpful so far. ^^

      I found the solution .. the setting " cast shadow must be desabled" in "Visibility"

    just assign toon shader..and it is done in 2 seconds..as simple as that

    • @Veritanky
      @Veritanky หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its okay if you work in maya, but many engines do not support Toon Shader so its easier if you have second mesh which you can export it. You can turn toon shader into polys but it looks good only from one angle and if model does not move
