- Stealth is an integral part of Breath of the Wilds navigation and combat, but knowing the ins and outs of this system is not info that's typically handed to the player. From enemy detection, stealth buffs, and everything else in-between, we will be explaining the information and stats behind this whole system so you can master your understanding of it! I wonder if someone could do a "no alerts" challenge run for BotW, inspired by full-on stealth games like the MGS series. Get through as much of the game as possible (not counting obviously impossible situations like boss fights) without ever being detected by enemies. Ganon won't even know you're awake!

I thought about that while making this video, problem is I'm just too clumsy of a player to even attempt it because I know I would mess it up xD

Welcome to Hyrule, Agent 47. Your target is Calamity Ganon, a force of pure evil that is currently engaged in a political stalemate with the client's daughter. The region is unstable following the deposition of the former government - expect armed resistance everywhere. Unless you're willing to skin these creatures yourself, you'll have to obtain your usual disguises from a local craftsman who goes by "Kilton". These will help you make your way to the castle, but heavily armed guards patrolling the perimeter of the ruined city will be on high alert. I leave you to prepare.

The player knowing stealth is best: *watching in amusement*
the player knowing that you can stack a 3-set stealth armor with a speed buff
Attack is best. No need for defense if the enemy is already dead

Wow, I never knew about the detection angles and ranges and I’ve been playing since release! The comparison of what you can do without being heard with and without the Sheikah set was super helpful too, usually I crouch and try to go as slow as possible even when wearing it, so it’s nice to know that I don’t have to be that careful! I’m gonna go slaughter some bokoblins now in their sleep lol

Bethesda could learn a great deal from this system, just because you have a high stealth skill shouldn't mean you can just crouch-walk right nearby characters with no cover of any kind, and get away with it. That and hearing, no clue why that isn't really simulated like Botw does it.
Exactly, RPG mechanics like that can be broken and I think BotW hit the sweet spot on how it should work!!
Nah, they should not take notes from Botw's stealth system. Botw has it's own problems with it's stealth system too. I'd say they take notes from The Last of Us 2.
It’s because their games are heavily rpg based we’re as BOTW is more about adventure.
No? Bethesda games are RPGs, there's no reason to imitate BotW's system even if it's "broken"

I would be very instructive to learn for example
1) how do beetles behave: Do they have vision? Is approching them hiding behind their tree helpful at all? Is the Energetic rhino beetle really more easily frightened than the other 2?
2) or why fishes flee before you land onto them but not when you swim right into them?
3) or WHY THE F* are the wolves in the north-east of Satori Mountain (where Summerwing butterflies gather) always already panicking when you come from above? When did they spot you? That makes me mad!

The animals' awareness works similarly to enemies. And I looked, and it seems there are two different parameters for different insects- it doesn’t say what they are, but it's probably that. I'd imagine fish are based more on the sound of swimming vs diving, and maybe those wolves spawn with a different behavior- I didn’t see different wolf awareness parameters. It also seems there are three sensitivity levels that horses can have.
Wearing stealth gear definitely helps when swimming to catch fish. It also helps catch beetles and other bugs.
Also how the korok detects stealth in the shrine quest
I literally sprinted right into an energetic Rhino Beetle because I didn't see it, i wasn't wearing any stealth clothing either, and it didn't fly away and I just collected it when I saw it (I was looking for rainbow sparrows for my compendium)

I wonder if it’s possible to beat the game without ever being detected (besides Ganon of course) I would think maybe, except Ganon’s castle seems tough.
its not that bad. the interior is really easy and you can go in through the north docks

@@mattm1982 I haven't ever been able to pull that off myself, but I don't see why not... Except they obviously won't die in one hit
@@mattm1982You can't stealth strike them traditionally but if you sneak up on em you can mount it like a horse and start beating its ass until it forcefully throws you into the ground.

9:40 moblin incinerated by lightning shortly after assasinated; body completely gone from existence.
One thing I find useful when you do get caught... to shorten the time they spend "attentive" and trying to locate you, Stasis them if you've unlocked it to work on enemies. You can even unlock them right away if you wish. The act of being frozen in time completely resets their suspicion and makes them immediately walk back to their spawn point and go back to normal.

I love this series. Thank you for doing them. Stealth is by far my favorite armor set. You mention that level 1, 2 and 3 stealth affects the enemies ability to hear you. This is determined by how many pieces of gear (or food buffs) you are using. You don't mention anything about the fairy upgrades though, and I am convinced that this makes a difference not only in the defensive value of the armor but I think it reduces the distance at which enemies and fauna can see you. I don't have any code knowledge but I spend a lot of time in stealth gear. I have approached enemies to be close enough where they should see me but didn't. Then, while standing still I change out of the stealth gear, and the enemy instantly sees me. I have also noticed that the star rating of the gear seems to affect how bugs and other animals detect your presence. For instance, with a 4* upgrade you can sprint past bugs and they won't notice you unless you pretty much touch them.

As far as all fairy upgrades go, the only thing they affect is the defensive value of the piece and the set bonus - the buffs are totally unrelated! I ran all of my stealth experiments with all buff levels to confirm that the stealth buff only affects the sound, which makes sense as the vision cones cannot be altered in any way. I think the most likely situations that happened to you where they got alerted randomly after switching outfits was either A) enemies occasionally turn their head left and right while still, which could have happened so fast that it wasn't noticed, or B) very rarely some enemies (mainly moblins) can randomly get suspicious for a reason I have even yet to figure out; it is rare but I've seen it happen before when observing camps from afar
Also for Botw 2: Deku Nuts and Sheika Smoke Bombs would be awesome items for the devs to add to enhance the stealth gameplau, both existing items in that world! (The Smoke bombs not normally used by Link, but the Sheika have been seen using them in past games, so why not?)
It would be cool that items like those do end up in the sequel. I find having references to past games absurdly enjoyable, and even better if it's not just a simple and forgettable picture or name.

I think they should add proning options like in a lot of stealth games where you can get super low and crawl. It would also alow Link to shoot arrows while not getting out of cover!!

I have poured so many hours into this game and beaten it so many times, I had NO idea you could distract lizalfos with fish!

One of the loading screen hints says it.
Well it implies it, actually.
There’s a loading screen hint for each of bokoblins, moblins, and lizalfoses that says what that monster variety eats. They don’t directly mention distracting, but it’s apparently implied.
The cones explain so much! I would also like to know lynel detection. Nothing escapes a lynels eye

Does walking on snow or sand effect your sound output? I always feel that sand and snow lizalfos can hear me sneaking up on them more effectively than normal variants.
I think some lizalfos if they're camouflaged can always sense you within a certain range, seems like no matter how quietly you approach them they always notice you
Might be hardcoded to happen, no way around that.
@@firestarter6488 shoot an arrow at them, hide and wait then you can sneak strike them
it was mentioned by a tip screen that lizalfos see better when camouflaged.
The good old explanation point the point where everything is explained and made clear to you
Another important thing about stealth is that it also affect the collectable bugs. With stealth level 3, you can just walk up to and gather them.
Yes, made it so much easier to farm those fucking lizards on Death Mountain....
Same for fish. You can swim up to them.
3 years of playing and I'm still learning new stuff! I recently found out that you can catch insects fairly easily on the Great Plateau in the beginning of the game just by crouching and walking up on them slowly. I probably should have figured that out on my own, but... I didn't. I just waited until I had the stealth set.
Awesome video. I love doing stealth in this game but never knew about the chain sneak attacks. I’ll have to fire up a new master mode game soon and try this.

This is great! I always forget about using arrows, etc. to make distraction noises.
I’d like to see another video on elixirs. I thought I understood cooking until I checked the ingredients of the potions beedle gives you. You can use crabs and fish in making potions, and I thought you couldn’t mix food and monster parts
Food can be mixed in with elixirs, as long as the base for the elixir is already present!! But noted, this can be something I research more for a future project!
I'd definitely buy an unofficial guidebook made by Croton.(Maybe even assisted by Kleric, Limcube, or any other people who know way too much about Breath of the Wild)
I would love to make one at some point perhaps! I feel like with all of what I've learned/researched, its definitely possible!!

Thx for the actual effects on the different stealth levels. I think this is important enough for the game team to explicitly state this in game. But getting back to topic - if the 2nd degree is simply allowing to run(not sprint) to enemy while not close enough, I feel like this level 2 stealth is pretty useless since 1)How do I know what is the range for this running detection? 2)I could just do level 1 stealth while stealth hopping the whole time and it's much more affirmative.
Thx for the raining weather=Level 1 stealth information! That was really helpful to actually be able to quantify how much rain environment contribute to stealthing. Again, still feel like the game should explicitly state this.

I mainly use stealth gear for one clear advantage: catching bugs. The bugs and critters are also sensitive to the sound system. I can just full speed walk up to some of the most skittish critters to just grab them.

This was interesting, and something I hadn’t really considered. It might be a bit tedious, but I think you should make a follow-up video or just a chart for each enemy and animal's field of vision and hearing. I think a lot of people would find that interesting.

I used to think the Guardians only had vision and no hearing though it might just be that their vision is so good and instant alert that it doesn't matter
They definitely act interestingly when they're being hit without knowing where the player is
When they randomly start firing multiple beams randomly is scary and funny haha. With my max upgraded ancient armour their beams hardly scratch me now!
i figured out guardians had hearing pretty damn quick because i also thought they had no hearing so i stupidly sprinted up behind one only for it to turn around and kill me. so i did some experiments and found that they have hearing.
I knew enemies had detectionangles but never had a clear picture of what they were like. This vid cleared up a lot of my questions, thanks Croton

I am new to botw and love to learn the mechanics of new games I play. I've seen several of your videos now and this is the most important one to me. Though it isn't useful to people listening to the game sounds, the sound waves on the hearing meter help deaf and hard of hearing or people who might be playing in muted mode be able to understand this mechanic visually!
Man dude. Yet another awesome video! Kinda wish you could have included the masks in as well though, that in its own right is a stealth aspect too. But I'm definitely glad I got to see this! Keep up the good work!
I will say though.... I really would love to see something like a Lizalfos run. Maybe even make an effort to eliminate all the Moldugas as a part of the run as well. The Lizals of the desert should not live in fear! I have a few other run ideas too. I might even try some of them like this one once I finally beat the game.

I will say, if you do make it happen, the Rubber armor and Urbosa's fury would probably be legal, especially since Electric Lizals can use the ability themselves in a way.
