    • 2019 Ram 1500 5.7L - T...
    With so much new competition in the hottest segment here in America, FCA invested heavily in the next-generation Ram 1500 for 2019. Part of that investment involved a huge commitment to improving fuel efficiency so for 2019, Ram is offering 2 new eTorque mild hybrid powertrains. Ram says it will improve efficiency by up to 10% and offer up an additional 90-130 ft.lbs of torque instantly, to help spin up the gas engine after the idle/stop function kicks in. The result is a truck that has improved acceleration versus the non-eTorque engine AND the next generation of start/stop technology. Buyers looking to keep 8-cylinders under the hood and enjoy better MPG should put the new Ram at the top of their list.

    There's a very good reason for the chrome on the front of most trucks. Once you get your painted front full of rock chips and dulled from other road debris you will appreciate a big chrome grill and front bumper.

    Great review and you are right on the money. I traded my 2016 RAM 1500 Laramie Longhorn on a 2019 Ram 1500 LIMITED. I have a little of over 5,000 miles on the 2019. Just the quietest , smoothest running and most comfortable truck I've ever owned. It tows my 4500 lb boat with ease. I still can't believe how far Dodge, now RAM has come with the quality of their trucks. Prior to purchasing the 2019 RAM LIMITED, I test drove a Tundra Platinum (I've owned 2 Tundras previously) and GMC Denali 6.2. Both of those trucks were pretty well loaded but neither came close to the quality and the ride of the RAM !

    In addition to giving start-stop, eTorque also permits more 4 cylinder operation. Overall, I think Ram choosing to focus their money on making a great truck and (largely) leaving their competitive powertrains alone, with a few refinements, was a great play. I assume we'll see some powertrain updates in a couple years.

    • @bryan5538

    • @gregoryfaulkner5345
      @gregoryfaulkner5345 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. A motor company should be first and foremost about building great motors and constantly moving forward power trains. So what has Ram done in the last seven years or so except but for one diesel option that they bought from another manufacturer and an 8-speed that got off the market from someone else and tweaking the Hemi to include DI? More recently, what have they done with an all-new pickup with respect to power trains with an all-new design. Yeah; they've got an all-new truck body and frame. They did some good work in that regard, but lets compare doing almost nothing to power trains to what Ford has done and what GM is doing in their all-new truck:
      2012 - Ford offers first downsized gas turbo engine offered in the segment as an option for their customers and took away only a gas-guzzling 6.2L V8 that's best suited for the Super Duty. The new engine provided competitive horsepower and superior torque than their own and competitive V8s and better estimated mpg as compared to any V8 for customers who might want this new option, but they left a quite capable V8 and base engine as the bread and butter choices for their customers as the Ecoboost gains acceptance for reliability and performance.
      2015 - All new platform that cut up to 700 pounds from the previous edition pickup, which will give them the payload advantage for the foreseeable future. Carried over the V8 and 3.5L Ecoboost from the previous edition, but came out with an all-new base engine and an all-new additional optional engine in a second downsized turbo that would now not only lead all other gas-powered power trains for full size trucks but actually meet or beat all mid-size truck mpg; even compared to 4 cylinder mid-sized trucks; and that's with 325 peak rated horsepower and 375 ft-lb torque @ 3,000 RPM.
      2017 - All new 3.5L Ecoboost now mated to an all-new ten speed transmission; now with 375 rated horsepower and 470 ft-lb torque while simultaneously achieving mpg above all competitors' gas-powered power trains; even better than base V6s from GM and Ram @ 18/25/21, versus 18/24/20 and 17/25/20, respectively in peak mpg form and that's with 165 more ft-lb torque than GM and 191 more ft-lb than Ram and at a lower RPM
      2018 - All gas engines get dual fuel injection. All except the 3.5L Ecoboost (the only carryover from 2017) improve performance and FE simultaneously. The base engine, once again is all new and class leading mpg. All-new PSD V6 with up to 30 mpg highway (a 1/2-ton first). The 2.7L Ecoboost extends it's lead on the competition for best gas-powered mpg for a full size truck while increasing torque by 25 and coming in 250 RPM lower, and all except the new base engine get mated to the 10-speed transmission.
      Until now, GM likewise had been sitting on their laurels except for a higher-geared eight speed and DI, but the 2019 will bring a ten speed; dynamic fuel management; an all-new GM designed and built I6 Duramax diesel; an all-new first-offering 4 cylinder GDI engine with 348 ft-lb torque at 1500 RPM; start stop; and all of this in an all new platform that cuts up to double the weight of the new Ram.
      So Ford MOTOR company has about 8 or 9 major advancements to power trains since at or about 2011. GM is bringing in four major power train advancements with an all-new pickup that moves them right up with Ford except for the fact that they'll limit most of their advancement for just some of their customers, whereas Ford tends to offer up all their advanced power trains at all price levels. Ram answers with eTorque; an old technology that's an auxiliary component system. For power trains, that's it! And it's not as if they recently did a lot of power train work with the previous truck. Moreover, they've eliminated regular cabs. So why is it that so many people are bragging on Ram as if they've accomplished something great? They're supposed to be a motor company for goodness sake, and the domestic competition has moved miles ahead and everyone is bragging on the all-new Ram with all old guts. People are criticizing the new Silverado due to something like a "polarizing front end style" and "inferior interior". Why are Americans focused on such silly attributes when it comes to a pickup truck when the real story should be that GM has moved forward as a motor company with their 1/2-ton pickup (good); eliminating the RCSB (bad); and offering nothing new with respect to power trains to the low end trims (bad). Well, with respect to Ram, at least they can hang their hat on the fact that they've done much more than the Asian manufacturers. I'll give them that much. A Tundra 4 WD with no-better-than-the-competition performance and capability gets as low as 16 mpg in the combined rating. Absolutely embarrassing. This is not 1995.

I've owned GM and Nissan trucks (I will never buy GM again, but I love Nissan), but I am honestly astonished by how nice this truck is and would definitely own one. FCA has had its share of issues with quality over the years, but this new Ram shows that they know where their bread is buttered. Trucks and SUVs are the cash cows of the industry and the Ram is now the truck to beat. Excellent review as always, Sofyan.

    22mpg on the highway? I’ve been able to get 27.4 on my 2015 Silverado w/ the 5.3. That’s with cruise set at 70, warm temps, and flat to mildly hilly terrain on a 300+ mile drive. More often I’ve experienced +25mpg highway and about 20 in combined driving. I tend to accelerate reasonably, and do try to save gallons as much as possible without going so slowly that I impede other traffic. Etourque might be an advantage, but my six speed bow tie does just fine. No doubt the interior on the truck in this video is far more plush, but I paid about 20k less than the sticker on this beast and got 4wd, Z71, the LT3 equipment pack, and more. Just sayin.

At purchase, I got a transferable B2B 5 year 100,000 miles extended warranty for $2,300 plus $60 tax. Don't know if you mentioned it, but one function of eTorque is engine speed matching during up and down shifts on the 8 speed transmission, making the power delivery buttery smooth and you don't need a 10 speed. Also you said the Etorque system which is just another liablity to go wrong costs $1500? Which I'm assuming they expect the customer to pay out of ignorance... Say you get the truck with 100k mile warranty (best case scenario) and you ALWAYS got 20mpg or the added +2mpg.. you would use 5000 gallons of fuel in the course of that 100k miles which at the current price of roughly $3 per gallon is $15,000. So +2 mpg or 10% of 20mpg (again best case scenario) it saves you .... Wait for it.... $1500... So basically best case scenario is you break even over 100k Miles assuming it doesn't cause you any trouble and assuming they give you 100k mile warranty for free which I'm pretty sure it's like an extra $1500... So you'd be wasting $1500... God I hate corporation trying to trick ordinary hard working people. ... GREAT REVIEW THOUGH!!

      I hate when people cherry pick, twist or play with numbers to the benefit of their argument. What you did was add an extended warranty to make the Etorque system seem worthless in 100,000 miles, as if you can't drive the thing any further than that. Also 100,000 miles is what most truck owners put on in less than 7 years. Why is that a big deal? At least it actually does pays for itself, given that is reliable, while also adding power. If you're just concerned about the system reliability, fine. The system has not proven itself reliable, but it also hasn't proven unreliable either. You're just scaring people and projecting a more costly ownership than you can support with fact. If someone is willing to take a little risk, they could find the extra $1,500 to be well worth it in the end. In theory, it is.

    • @AkioWasRight
      @AkioWasRight 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Etorque system isn't just meant to save fuel, it also adds a little power. If you don't question someone paying $1,500 for a larger engine, why question someone paying $1,500 extra for an electric assist that not only adds MPG, it also adds power?

    • @ec6933
