Building a Boost, Water Temp & Tachometer Gauge System for the Simulator

  • I stumbled across some cheap Boost, Water Temp and Tachometer gauges on Amazon recently, so I thought what the heck, and decided to try and integrate them into my sim rig.
    As is usually the case with most sim-related projects, I'm not the first person to think of this, so I used a few of the guides from AMSTUDIO as a reference and then adapted them to suit my particular integration.
    This video shows how I wired everything up as well as how to configure SimHub to get it all working, as well as the end result.

    Thanks for this vid - I've done stuff like this on my flight sim cockpit build, but didn't know it was possible on my race sim until I saw this, and was impressed by the sketch maker for the Arduino. On the flight sim you have to make it yourself, so this is way better!

      With SimHub, depending on what your hardware is, you might also need to setup everything yourself, along with the equipment.
      My dashboard is a fully DIY-type of setup, so I can't use any of the ready-made modules, and have to go full Custom-Protocol.

    Awesome video, Will! I loved the in-depth documentation of this project and the pacing of the video. So often these little projects on youtube are either over in a second or painfully slow paced beginner level.
    I'm really looking forward to all the crazy ideas the new studio will surely have spawned already. =)

    Two observations. First, please refer (as you did sometimes) to pin numbers on the MOSFET. referring to “outside terminal” is confusing at best. Second, while I realize this is in no way your issue to resolve, it appears your boost gauge has three connectors. Mine has none - just a 4 wire harness coming from the instrument. ...no idea where the data signal is supposed to come from

    For the long term, please disable that beep on the rev counter. It's a tad bit annoying and it seems to make you up-shift too early and lose time.

      @Bassalicious 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@boostedmedia Yeah, you said that in the video. I'd just prefer the sound of an engine in the limiter to a frenetic beep as a viewer. I'm not meaning to sound negative or mean but is an added artificial beep in the videos really that much more of a help than a good shift light (which is already a hassle to get right for each car)? I personally don't like stuff beeping at me, especially when the alternative is an internal combustion engine in the limiter, downshift protection is usually about the most I want to take. But that might just be me. ;)
      EDIT: I very much appreciate you showing off this feature in this project video, though, don't get me wrong! =)

    would it work the same if i made this with an arduino uno? great project man i'm absolutely fascinated.

    • @Dutch3DMaster
      @Dutch3DMaster ปีที่แล้ว

      It would (I take it you tried by now). PWM pins behave the same across Arduino's, but some Arduino's have a higher default PWM frequency than others, and this will differ from pins as well from Arduino to Arduino.
      I use a Mega for driving 8 gauges, 7 PWM ones driven through a BC547 transistor, and the speedometer directly through the tone(); function in the Arduino software (my setup is fully CustomProtocol, the type of thing in the video is not capable of being used for me).

  • @noobairsofter4753

    Sorry if this is a daft question I couldn't find the same switches your using I randomly bought some that looked the same. They have arrived and are on on switches.... I didn't know that was a thing 😂 will they still work

    • @Dutch3DMaster
      @Dutch3DMaster ปีที่แล้ว

      They will still work, usually the center contact is the contact that one of each side connects to. In 1 position you can simply leave off a wire, and connect the other side, and it will function like a switch with an off-side.
      I am fairly sure that's the type of switch used in this video as well, since it is the most common type.
      And just a little hint: There's On-Off-On (3 positions, with the middle position latching and not connecting any side)
      There's On-On-Off (3 positions, with the off-position not in the middle), you have Mom-On-Off, in which the On-position is springloaded and forces the switch back in the off-position upon releasing it.
      You have Mom-on-off-mom-on, in which the middle position is latching, and the other two on both sides are springloaded (think of these types of switches for the type of switch that you can find in a car for electric windows going up or down, but remaining in the position upon releasing the switch).
      And next to some of those configurations (there are more), you have pin configurations with 1 set of 3, 2 sets of 3, 3 sets of 3, sometimes up to 5 or 6 (though the switches tend to be bigger themselves as well).
      In those configurations you can have isolated contacts, or the center contact can be bridged (not super common, but definitely an option).

    • @Dutch3DMaster
      @Dutch3DMaster ปีที่แล้ว

      For anyone else who might be wondering: unless you really go down the path of CustomProtocol and some pretty big messing around with non-PWM pins being switched on and off rapidly, you are limited to the amount of PWM pins on the Arduino being used for gauges.

    • @frazerp
      @frazerp 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is because in order to make the tacho work it needs an amplified signal from the arduino. I also think that is why he was having issues with the boost gauge - it may also need the signal amplified.

    hey have a question you can buy any meter and make it work the same way

    • @Dutch3DMaster
      @Dutch3DMaster ปีที่แล้ว

      No. If your gauge (like in my setup) is a standard panel style gauge or a galvo-style gauge, you will need to use CustomProtocol, because SimHub doesn't have the module for that preinstalled/loaded, nor does it (for as far as I know) exist.
      Those types of gauges can be driven with a BC547 (depending on the gauge, obviously, if your current draw is higher you will need to use a stronger transistor) that you feed the PWM output, which is what I do for 7 of the gauges in my setup.

    Can a 12v5w diode be connected instead of 1w?

    • @Dutch3DMaster
      @Dutch3DMaster ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. I am confused on why there's a diode needed in the first place, but that's just me. I thought it was meant to prevent flyback from the gauge (it would be in the wrong place because flyback should be prevented in the gauge as close to the part causing flyback spikes) but it seems that's not what it is supposed to do.
      A higher wattage diode only means it will be able to handle a pretty massive amount of current through it, just as it's blocking voltage and current will be higher.
      It might be that it's voltage drop is a bit higher as well, but that should not be the biggest issue here.
      Because I don't know what this diode is meant to do precisely, I don't want to say that you can leave it out, nor would I like to suggest that you might be better off with a higher voltage (in case of flyback spikes you definitely would want to go higher than the supply voltage, since flyback spikes of a servo or a coil from a panel gauge can easily range up to 100V).

    • @Dutch3DMaster
      @Dutch3DMaster ปีที่แล้ว

      If the temperature gauge uses the tone(); function in Arduino-land, it might be worth checking out if setting the range of the gauges in the Gauges setup to anything higher than 31.
      I am not sure what the output is in that section and if it's translated by SimHub in the sketch tool, but the tone function on Arduino's can't go lower than 31 Hz, and will cause a gauge to do a little dance at it's lowest level.
      My Kienzle 1318-27 speedometer does this, and uses tone(); instead of PWM.

      Probably you'd have to have some datasheet, along with knowledge of what to feed it. If it's a CAN-bus operated speedometer, I can only say: good luck.
      CAN-Bus is manufacturer specific so the instructions required to fool the speedometer and make it think it's in a car are secret.
      There are ways to find out what to use, but they can take weeks, because there's probably more than a thousand combinations.
