The only way I can think of to make a convincing rock face is to do a latex mold of the face of a very large (thin hopefully) rock of the desired shaped and size. It wouldn't be cheap especially for a one time mold. Flagstone, maybe slate or something similar.
There’s no way this only cost $2500. The buildings alone cost more than that - let alone the styrofoam, paints, flocking, scenery, and figures. When all is said and done if a person just wanted to pick up and build this it’d be a lot closer to $10,000 easy. Absolutely, beautifully, insane, madness - I would love to be a fly on the wall for game night! Do you read a Terry Prattchet? His is definitely the world for you to experience! Try “The Night Watch” on Audio book while you’re painting or building next.
So many people at home now just mindlessly watching TV. I showed this video to my 6yo niece and said "you know, we could MAKE something... like this guy!!!" (obviously on a somewhat smaller scale/scope haha) And do you know what the most important lesson I took from this video and taught her? That it's ok to make mistakes. The goal isn't to be perfect right out of the gate, but to at least TRY. From there, you can learn and fix mistakes if you make them, but if you don't even TRY, you'll never truly learn. I like watching all these various build videos for technique and all of that, but this video has a real life-lesson in it. Cliffs too steep? Buildings in the wrong place?! THAT'S OK! You can always change it!!! Bravo, sir!
Excellent work! I got into warhammer 20 years ago and found painting the miniatures was more fun than the game at times. Building massive dioramas or gaming tables is a dream of mine! I've only been a sub for a short time but I absolutely love watching your builds, I look forward to seeing more.
Our baby girl was born a month ago. This gives me some great insights for a castle project that goes way beyond a simple toy - and I have a few years to complete it. Thank you! 😁👍🏻
All said and done this is turning into more of a display piece than gaming board for the ole hobby room as far as re-usability goes. I wanted to go all out with these buildings as far as detail. lmk what you think! We'll definitely will be making some proper, modular gaming boards in the future. 🙂
This is going to be a magnificent display piece!!! I can't wait to see the finished project. Just curious - Do you plan to have the buildings portable (for game play) or are you going to permanently attach them? Love all the detail you provide in your tutorials, it's a great help for those of us still on the terrain learning curve.
Only thing that I've noticed that you might have issues with is that with the big stacks of foam to build off of, you didn't reinforce it. I've worked on diorama, model rail, and wargaming terrain, and one of the major things that you really want to do with the stacks of foam, even using foam glues, is to get things to stud it with that help to deal with potential break points. Some people use nails from the underside or small dowels or bamboo skewers. It basically makes it a lot more durable for use and doesn't take much work or effort or cost to make it a whole lot stronger.
These companies that sponsor you chose well, every time I see a new product someone sends you, I'm like '... Hmm... Interesting.' and go check them out. Keep up all your good work!
I love the brick in your workshop. A room like that I could be so relaxed and focused. It's a tremendous help to have a clean neat and proper atmosphere to work in. Great job on all your projects!
i like that the mill got moved higher up in elevation at the top of a waterfall, thats where the most power will come from the river and give the mill more power!
This is truly EPIC a build that many would not ever attempt! your a Brave soul my friend! I ma excited just to watch! Thanks for including us in your Diorama Dreams!
All this videos are both interesting and relaxing to watch. I think I've watched the Wizard tower from start to finish already ... 10 times I think? Just amazing!
Oh wow, you are amazing. The cliffside turned out so good and super realistic. I also love that you chose to move the mill higher as that allowed you to add a little waterfall.
Ok, very cool terrain and love the TP-sculptamold updates. That said, I have a few technical issues with your layout. Placing the tall water mill so close to the wall defeats some of the point of having the wall-blocking line of sight for archers, giving invaders easier access up the cliff, etc. Most of the time, taller buildings would be inside or further from the wall. The second twiddle has to do with the windmill and cottage. You had the cottage up and the mill down. Logistically, you want the mill higher to catch more wind, especially as the walls block the wind from one direction sitting that close. If you switched them, the mill blades catch more air (though they would block more line of sight). Things to think about if you care about realist planning.
Logistically I’m trying to fit it all in a very cramped space😜. Thanks for the feedback. Realistically there should be about a 4x4 area of these boards.😅
I'm really excited to see where your imagination can take you, fleshing out this terrain/setting. Also at 25:25, the blue nighttime vista showing through your windows, juxtaposed with the orange glow of the light bulbs, just creates a great atmosphere for this build that I very much enjoy. I really appreciate the value of production you put into this, whether conscious, subconscious or pure happenstance. Big thumbs up!
holy crap man. All of your builds are Luke Towan quality in terms of scope, detail, and video production. It blows me away how you are able to put all of this together. I really hope your channel and patreon continue to grow to support more content like this.
Cutting the foam with a table saw...Wish I thought of that. I do mine with a steel ruler and Ofa knife..I always get a weird angle along the edge. I'll have to keep this in mind for the future.
I really appreciate that you are working harder to show us this masterpiece! I can't wait to see this finished and it has inspired me and some friends to start our own project as I imagine many others did as well. Thank you, dude!
Great build! You inspired a lot of my build. My son and I have been working on our first table. Just wanted to give a heads up, we had a great glue experience using the 3M 77 spray. If you follow the directions on the bottle, it accelerated our dry time dramatically.
Hey that's awesome, thanks for the tip! I'll have to give that one a try for sure. Really great to hear you and your son working on a project together. :)
I've heard that the fumes from burning/melting foam is indeed toxic, but that depends on temperature and whatnot. There are also different kinds of foams so it might not be the case with all of them. Regardless, it is best to use a respirator and work in a well ventilated area if possible just to be safe.
I know these projects takes a ton of effort, but take heart in the fact that all the painting, construction and video production has made your channel the very best of its kind, and will continue to stun and motivate hobbyists well beyond the upload date ;DD I have no doubt the views, likes and contributions will meet and then exceed your expectations in time.
Looks great! I am surprised that you just didn't go with the straight sculptamold. The problem with The Witcher diorama was that it was entirely relying on the hardboard to resist the warping. Yes, you did have foam on that piece but it was all in small bits instead of continuous pieces 2-inches thick. That EPS foam is pretty good at resisting warping, especially given it's thickness.
I use layer's of expanding spray foam from the cans to build big hills and stuff like that ive found its a much much better way to go about making hills and mountains.
This is already looking amazing..I love how the rocks are turning out and can’t wait for how the river and waterfall will look ,just so excited for you ,this is going to be totally amazing 😀
Amazing build so far! I love tabletop world stuff. The only issue I see is with that building next to the windmill... it seems far too close to the curtain wall entrance, esp. considering all that space on the other side of the windmill, toward that back corner.
Like it...... but I went with 4×4 foam core time 8 shape in a donut do that the DM can control the game. Each panel of the 8 is a different area of a whole world...... and there able to be moved into different areas and and I have plans to add two more parts each with 8 panels that will be 4×4 . Then after all is said and done I'm trying to figure out how to incorporate the under dark under the boards that will be finished.
Yeah I hear ya. I can barely fit that extra 6" as is though lol. All said and done this is going to be more of a display piece than gaming board as far as re-usability goes. Definitely will be making some proper boards in the future. 🙂
Man you do SUCH awesome work! I play Warhammer 40K, and I want to eventually make a big ass diorama show piece, similar to this, to show off my fabourite army
I don’t know how to play table top games, I bet it’s very fun. I do however really think that these buildings are so cool that I would like to just build one of them just to look at. I build 1/12 miniatures and really enjoy that hobby, I also collect 1/6 scale. Miniatures. I love miniature dioramas so much I had to sell my house and buy a bigger one just to be able to house and display them all. I have a 1/12 Victorian mansion that is 4 stories high and has 16 roooms all ornately furnished. The house is 3’x4’ and been my pet project since 2008 but I’ve been collecting museum quality miniatures since 1980 when I was a senior in high school. On this house I have invested at least $50,000! It’s fully electrified with each room on its own circuit and I have gathered one of a kind miniatures from artisans all over the globe. My dining room is my favorite room and I spent $6000 on the China. It’s perfectly scaled and in the blue willow pattern service for six. Each place setting sits on a sterling silver charger plate and has dinner, salad, and bread and butter plates, soup bowl and cup and saucer. Three different crystal glasses and sterling silver flatware with a folded linen napkin on top. It’s quite spectacular. Thanks for inspiring me to make even more projects.
Wow, that all sounds absolutely incredible! I would love to see all of your work, in particular that mansion. Do you have a place somewhere online I can go to take a look at your collection? It sounds incredible. If you can email me the link @ realterrainhobbies@gmail.com that would be amazing. I’m afraid I might miss it if you post it in here.

Looking good Neil, may I suggest as an over the top suggestion LeDs, how about a fully operational water fountain disguised as a waterfall...I would also suggest some modularity ,however, that maybe impossible due to the buildings your incorporating . I always try not to create ONE hit wonders, it makes the reuse of the table a little less exciting...
Resin Cast Buildings Made To Impeccable Standard...£1000. Time/Energy Put In By A Master Like Neil...£1000 Toilet Paper Used In Plaster...Priceless There are some things, money can't buy. (Mastercard got that right).
Of course, don't forget the star of this entire project! 🥰: bit.ly/Table-Top-World
Do you think the size of the buildings will go with the figurines LOTR SBG and warhammer AoS?
The only way I can think of to make a convincing rock face is to do a latex mold of the face of a very large (thin hopefully) rock of the desired shaped and size. It wouldn't be cheap especially for a one time mold. Flagstone, maybe slate or something similar.

@@crystalm4324 I think the buildings alone cost the $2500.00 if you go to the site and price things out, it does go quick!

I love this project ;-) Keep goin Neil!!!
Thanks Brent.🙂 Going hard over here!
Go back and paint it when it's done
You guys did a great job painting the buildings.
I did a mental "hey!!" when I saw your name pop up in the Patron list :)

Good ventilation and a heatgun is also recommended. Use heatgun on any flat surface and it will get texture and look more natural
That palisade would make one hell of a DM screen!!! All looks awesome!!!
Also: I'm missing the wandering wizard inserts... hope he's coming back?!
This is truly EPIC a build that many would not ever attempt! your a Brave soul my friend! I ma excited just to watch! Thanks for including us in your Diorama Dreams!
Ordinary silicone is great to glue styrofoam, easy removed if needed and can hold vertical parts quite good. Just a tips :)
Neil hands has magic of creating another world.. amazing 👍👍👍👍👍
Simply amazing, truly a work of art. Well done on such a large, and detailed board.
The scale of this is incredible. I'm so glad I came upon your channel.
All this videos are both interesting and relaxing to watch. I think I've watched the Wizard tower from start to finish already ... 10 times I think?

That’s awesome. Thanks man, glad you’re enjoying them.😊
Oh wow, you are amazing. The cliffside turned out so good and super realistic. I also love that you chose to move the mill higher as that allowed you to add a little waterfall.
some caves carved inside the backside off the hill would look amazing maybe a big one under the town a small one under the windmill.

Very nice work!
I am going to o be so very happy to this whole thing complete....only because the scale of this is so grand! What an amazing project!
😊❤️
this is just incredible. So nicely done!!
that's really good, me and my brother are now making a model map with clay for the terraforming!
This is epic and amazing! Can't wait to see it all done!
Thanks!!😊

That looks freaking awesome, keep up the great work and you and your family stay healthy
Loving this! I can't wait to see how this all works out
Colossal work and gorgeous result !!! I hope I can soon do no worse, well, or at least one step closer to a similar result.

This is a fascinating project to watch. Thank you for all your hard work, it's very inspiring!
This is huge, will still work great for roleplay games (like Pathfinder or D&D) as much as a display diorama. Can't wait to see it evolve!
OMG! This is so amazing! That tabletop stable is so awesome!
Neil, this is coming along awesomely! Looking forward to the next update man, keep up the great work :D

I'm watching you from confined France and man, you make me travel so far!! Thanks a f**king lot!!!
Don't forget to have room to add your own houses and taverns and towers you have built!
They are awesome!
Holy Lord of Change! This is going to be insane. :)

Thanks so much for the kind words. That really made my day.😊❤️
Nice work! Looks great so far!
oh man this thing is gonna look AMAZING when you're done... super cool
The editing in this video is fantastic! What a huge build!!

Great job man really liked the piece you made for the seem line! Cant wait for the next one
Hello. It will be awesome. Looking forward to the next episode. Greetings Tino
Cant wait to see when you paint it, cool build.
I use layer's of expanding spray foam from the cans to build big hills and stuff like that ive found its a much much better way to go about making hills and mountains.
It is coming out Awesome.
This is already looking amazing..I love how the rocks are turning out and can’t wait for how the river and waterfall will look ,just so excited for you ,this is going to be totally amazing 😀
I love your channel ! Really making my time in quarantine here in Italy passing by real quick watching all your amazing videos !
Getting a like for Robertson bits/screws
Amazing build so far! I love tabletop world stuff. The only issue I see is with that building next to the windmill... it seems far too close to the curtain wall entrance, esp. considering all that space on the other side of the windmill, toward that back corner.
Found my new channel to binge for an entire night
Duuuuude, those buildings look so good. Triple A movie big budget quality.
Windmill could have a road to it, as the grain will be transported to it for making mill. Nice project! :)
This project is coming along fantastically, looking forward to more :D
Excellent Build. Looking forward to the next installment.
This is fabulous. Love watching you build this.
Suuuppeer....hello from france😀
Well done. Thank you for sharing your work.
you can have a steep hill overlooking the riverside, you'd have to add a wall of rocks pressed on the hill side, where the fortress is mounted on.
Wow!!!! I would love to get some of these kits and build my own Castle Grey Skull!!!!
Totally man. I’d recommend you do!👍👍
You make us dream ...Gorgeous!!
Love it buddy, really great piece of work, I dont think I've seen you so animated in any of your vids either, looking forward to the full sche-bang
Like it...... but I went with 4×4 foam core time 8 shape in a donut do that the DM can control the game.

Beautiful And Awesome 👍
Amazing work as always man!
Thanks man.🙂
And wargammers screaming why not do 4feet x 6 feet :D
Exactly!
Yeah I hear ya. I can barely fit that extra 6" as is though lol. All said and done this is going to be more of a display piece than gaming board as far as re-usability goes. Definitely will be making some proper boards in the future. 🙂
Same issue here. I barely have room for a 4x4 table, let alone my 6x4 topper. Thank goodness for Warcry and other skirmish games!
😱😍😭
Was just about to say the same thing. Lol
another awesome video! Thank you.
Thanks Lucas :)
Man you do SUCH awesome work! I play Warhammer 40K, and I want to eventually make a big ass diorama show piece, similar to this, to show off my fabourite army

Damn, this is impressive. Definitely want to look into building some table pieces of my own now
What is the manufacturer of the gypsy wagon visible from 18:40 to 19:40 ?
Following this from Sweden, looks like it will be truly awesome!
I don't say Dude much or Epic but...DUDE THIS IS GONNA BE EPIC!! Thanks Mr.Neil
Haha, thanks😁
The tower behind the watermill is on an angle..you can see the gap between it and the wall...but it's looking fantastic so far...
It was just sittting there for reference. Nothing has been worked on with the city yet🙂
wow this project is amazing been watching it since you started and can not wait to see it finished you can tell that you have put your hart and soul in too this project may i say i love your work its not quite conventional when you think table top but given the chance to play witch such a artistic and stunning set i would say yes every time your content makes for very enjoyably view and very relaxing you can tell that you are the sort of person that takes pride in all the products he creates such a inspiration keep doing what you do best my friend
Thanks Michael, I really appreciate those kind words my friend.🙂
Stumbled on your collaboration vid with Goober and fell in love with what you guys started and what you are putting together. Subbed as I have to see how this all turns out!
Hello very very Beautiful Video 👍👍👍
Oh man! Excited to see the painting!
amazing work cant wait to see the finished product
Holly bananas man, so many add slots in this one.
My dreamly Castle!!! Thank you dude.
This looks amazing.
Finally it's out :D
God damn it's huuuuuge! The board in itsself didn't do the size justice :D
that's a big project 👍👍
Looks amazing so glad i found your channel awesome work
I'm not familiar with tabletop games but they seem interesting and I really wonder how your project will end up performing when used for a game. Could you do a test run (a game) with it once you complete the build? 😁💕
I may just have to do that😊
This is so amazing! I love your diorama making videos!
Another amazing video! so many things I'm learning for my own builds. thank you.
Yeah this is more of a display piece all said and done. as for LEDs, there may or may not be something planned for that. ;)
For your next project try using a thrift store hand mixer shreds the TP perfect
Ah, sounds perfect!🙂
Resin Cast Buildings Made To Impeccable Standard...£1000.
Time/Energy Put In By A Master Like Neil...£1000
Toilet Paper Used In Plaster...Priceless
There are some things, money can't buy. (Mastercard got that right).
Hehe, thanks very much.
this is sick! i will definitely be following this build!
so cool!!! I love the buildings sooooo much!!!
Lovely project, keep it up, man!
Thanks, I appreciate the encouragement.🙂
