Abandoned at an auction house in Chicago by a client wishing to sell it, but not wishing to invest in its conservation, this painting by Evert Pieters was at the end of the line. Not wanting to see the painting lost, the auction house contacted Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration to inquire as to whether we would take it. After initially refusing and learning that the painting would be destroyed, we relented and the painting was delivered to the studio where it sat in storage for nearly 5 years until it was rediscovered during a bout of cleaning. Believing no painting should be destroyed, particularly one of this quality, Julian Baumgartner proceeded with the conservation of the work with the intent of offering it for sale at auction and donating the proceeds to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) / Doctors Without Borders.
BFAR created a Squarespace website to share the work and the results of the auction and donation: www.TheOrphanPainting.com

Maybe în an episode you could show us a few of those "too far gone" painings, to get an image of what limits restoration has
Ive seen quite a few videos that show the limits of art restoration on this channel. I highly doubt any art would be unable to benefit in some degree from restoration.
Considering what museums can piece together and restore, I think it's more of a matter of cost/value than possibility.
Even if that is true, I'd still love to see some of the experiments
@@CoffeeCat322 Just about to say the exact same thing. You can build -restore anything if you have the money. It might take years but pay the price.
I wish I could buy it .
So, this is the first time I'm watching Baumgartner Restoration without my mother, sadly she passed away on Christmas day. It feels so odd to watch it without her. Both me and her love this channel and enjoys both Julian and Kits enthusiasm about the work they are doing.
Please accept my condolences.
@ thank you
I'm so sorry. My condolences as well. Make sure you take care of yourself during this tough time.
@ thank you
I am so sorry for your loss.
I was sitting here watching this restoration thinking, "Huh, he's going in a different order than usual.". The reaction when he realized he jumped the gun a bit was entertaining.
I'm so glad it wasn't just me lmao!!! I thought the order was weird.
Thank you! I worked with Doctors without Borders for 6 years as a trauma nurse. I learned more in those 6 years than I had in the previous 40 years of my life. I became a much better provider, a better human being and my perspective of the world and its peoples changed dramatically.
We worked in horrible conditions sometimes, sometimes there was gunfire, sometimes the people were so kind and generous even when we could only communicate in gestures.
Supporting their work is amazing!
Thank you for your service and thank you Julian for your support also
Thank you
My own personal orphan - the son we adopted from a Romanian orphanage when he was six - was treated by Doctors Without Borders for strabismus. How I wish I could personally thank those brave doctors. Our son is now a successful outsider artist and fine young adult. I’ll pray your orphan raises lots of money to help such a worthy cause as Doctors Without Borders. Bless you, Julian!
Love this!
❤ 💖 ❤
I think the original artist would be really touched to learn someone had put so much care into restoring their artwork to its true glory.

Surface scum shrouds the seaside setting; slow sensitive salvage summons the significant scene. So satisfying.
Pretty Painting Praised by Pertinent People. Pleasing Plenty.
Dude.
👍👏😎
Some hundred years down the line, someone will find and appreciate those keys, made from lovely antique plastic and printed on an ancient machine.
And like Julien's collection of canvas scraps for filling holes they'll have a drawer full of period appropriate 3d printer filament to restore them.
Unfortunately they won't last that long. PLA absorbs water from the air and the long polymer chains get hydrolyzed (broken down by the water) making it become super brittle over time. So eventually they will just crumble apart, that's the unfortunate reality of using bio based plastics.
@@isotope3234 He's got a Bambu Labs printer, so for sure he'd be able to print something in ABS instead, or maybe even polycarbonate. Even if the PLA takes a long time to become brittle, it will start creeping within the next year or two, maybe faster, being under tension. I don't know how much other plastics would off-gas, though, so I don't know the best archival-safe material. Perhaps PET (not PETG) might be a safe choice? Mylar is just a special form of PET, after all.
@@isotope3234 The biggest factor in PLA degrading isn't ambient humidity, it's UV and since these are behind the canvas and covered, the amount of UV they'll see is minimal if any at all. Certainly over a long enough timeline they'll fail but by then the painting will undoubtedly need another round of conservation and these can be replaced.
PLA is not long time stable, I'd be surprised if it lasts more than 10 years.
Final sale, $14,600. Nice work!!!!!!
I listen to your videos to fall asleep (nearly) every night. I also enjoy them in my waking hours but you have the absolute best cadence and tone to fall asleep to. I know that isn’t the intended affect, but I’m mega grateful for it. Keep up the phenomenal work!
I have oftentime trouble sleepingand Ihave to say this videos have helped me immensely. Thanks!!
Hello, Julian! As I watch this new video of yours I just want to say the biggest thank you that I can offer you for helping me.
I recently had an exam to be my country's civil servant, more specifically to be a museum curator in one of the art museums managed by the governor of the province I live in. While I went through the initial exam that covers the basic knowledge, the next stage is more difficult because it is about the museum-related knowledge, and that includes museum management and taking care of the museum collection.
It was difficult to get more study material because this is not a popular position for people to apply, and the one provided by the government body isn't enough, and my fears were proven when it's time to do the exam.
Thankfully, that's when you come in. I watched your videos and find it incredibly educational and interesting, and you never skip over any explanation so I have an easier time remembering it. It turns out a lot of the things you show and explain in your videos show up in the exams! Including how to use the solvent to erase the old varnish, what material to fix a damaged canvas, how to address a warbly canvas surface, everything!
As for now, I don't know whether I pass or not, the results will be in by this sunday. But I just want to say thank you for giving me a better fighting chance. Without you, I would have scored far lower and couldn't hope in the way I hope now! Thank you, Julian, and I hope you will be blessed going forward and on!!
I'm so happy to hear this! I hope you pass! I love when people tell me that my videos are useful!
I wish you all the best and that you are awarded the curators job you want. What a lovely way to make a living, serving humanity by caring for our culture - along with compassion it's the best of us imo.
Oh my fingers are crossed for you! 💙
I am so happy that you saved the orphan. What a treasure!
@@BaumgartnerRestoration Hello!! I'm here for an update!! I GOT THE POSITION!!!
Once again I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your help, I 100% wouldn't be able to get the position if not for you!! 😭😭😭😭🙏🙏🙏🙏✨✨✨✨
In 1905, Evert Pieters moved to Katwijk aan Zee (The Netherlands), where he made a large number of beach scenes, often featuring shell fishermen and horses. I live in Katwijk aan Zee and read a lot about its historical riches. So too about many painters who came here to paint seascapes.
Thank you for restoring this painting!
It’s got this ‘Haagse School’ vibe, don’t you think? Very glad this one got saved and restored.
@carmenm.4091 Yes it does, Evert Pieters did painted most of his paintings in the same time period as the painters of the "Haagse school", but was not working in The Hague or connected with the "Hofstad". He didn't get much credit for his work in the Netherlands, probably because he was schooled in Belgium. Evert Pieters tried to get a membership at the "Haagse Pulchri studio" but got declined, so he tried to get inside the "Haagse school" movement probably. I think it is funny because most of the "Haagse school" painters painted many paintings in Katwijk aan zee.
I have to say, before even finishing the video I was baffled when you said this was a painting no one really wanted. Even when you show the before state, I found it absolutely beautiful.
After finishing watching, I have to say that I feel vindicated. It's absolutely stunning.
I felt the same way! it'd be on my wall in a flash
I cant believe this painting was unwanted. It's stunning, quiet, peaceful. Absolutely worth restoring and hanging somewhere where it will be appreciated
Thank you for rescuing this painting and generously donating the sale to charity.
Not only does the auction winner get an awesome painting and the satisfaction of aiding a great cause, they also get a fully-documented Julien restoration - itself a work of art that may actually appreciate over time, like a classic car "that was once owned by so-and-so". That's quite a trifecta -- I wish I could afford to play.
me too
When he first said actioned off, I was pumped!!! Then I remembered I’m broke… But man! That would be so freak’n cool!!!!
Step One: Save the painting. Step Two: Save the world. Yes, Julian, YES!
I chatter occasionally about the impact your work has on world culture. Art shows us who we are and where we've been. It's vitally important to conserve these pieces, and I'm always so grateful to you for doing it right. And now I guess you're gonna save some lives in the process, LIKE THE HERO YOU ARE. Thanks, Julian!
I don't know what to say other than "you and your work are simply amazing". I'm an art lover... the world needs more people like you.
How wonderful that the lucky winning bidder will be able to rewatch this video to see just how their painting was lovingly and carefully restored!
My daughter (6 years old) and I watch your restorations and she commented as we drove down the street and wound down her tinted car window “this is like when the paintings are revealed mummy.” Obviously we would love to buy this painting but the bids are already substantial and rightly so. Keep up this amazing work.
I have a painting by Evert Pieters myself with a depiction of a horse in Rotterdam Harbour, therefore I immediately recognised the artist before he was mentioned by Julian. :-) And likewise, 'my' yellowish Pieters can use a new varnish for sure too! Thanks for reminding.
I know a guy who restores paintings.... :)
@@julietchristen - In the Netherlands?
@@fritzrub I was trying to be funny...you know Julian gets paintings from all over the world....
@@julietchristen Well I was taking it as a jest. But I have very bad experiences with American Post returning valuable goods from the States to the Netherlands. They usually get lost on Jamaica or so...
Thank you for supporting such a worthy cause, both the painting and Doctors Without Borders.
14:51 that's really funny and I had been wondering where the cleaning step was XD
what a stunning painting !! I really love the bright sky and the pretty beach sand
I'm in awe not just at the restoration but the 3D printed keys. Patent them! Also US$3250 on current auction, this is a fantastic result already! Bernie in Sydney
can you patent something that's already been used by other people though? some things are best left for free to continue this kind of work.
Subscribed for a few months. After binging of numerous episodes, I have to say this is my favorite. This painting touches me somehow. Maybe my Dutch heritage. Maybe because I'm 70 and can see myself with a horse, alone on a lonely beach. Maybe it is the redemption of this painting, restored and auctioned to bless a worthy cause. Melancholy has taken hold...
Thank you for saving this beautiful work of art. It saddens me to think that someone would just throw something like this away when there are those of us who could never afford such magnificent art and would have taken it even in the in its pre restored state. Please keep doing what you do so well, it brings such joy to so many.
Thank you, Julian, for sharing your many talents, the story of this painting, and the fabulous reveal! ❤
I will never be in conservatory, yet after watching your talent amongst others, you would be my number 1 choise. You have proven that your talents and passion withstand no other. Keep up the vids and knowledge that very few of us will have. Appreciate it Julian
Julian is such an inspiration. He is not only well versed in conservation techniques but also thoroughly versed with upcoming tech. Impressive! ❤
I recently watched a restoration of a painting and the V & A museum in England, and OMG they took shortcuts and no hot table, they restored in in frame!!! I was yelling at the video.
It is times like that when you need to contact the institution and offer your assistance. Presumably they do not have a fully trained art conservator on staff and so they need someone to educate their employees. In my country, at least, there are far too few professionals available to meet the demand. We need more experts.
If they did it was the best way for that painting at that moment.
I have seen restorations in the V&A restoration department that went way further than i have seen on Julian’s channel.
@@merlestegeman28 It was likely just a "quick grab" for "Demonstration" purposes. & the person doing the "this is what we do", had never been on camera & was not instruct well bout acting & speaking on camera.
Sounds like Someone Never been on camera b4 & wasn't very good instructions About BEING on camera...& was probably some thing they just a quick grab…… for "demonstration purposes".
I saw a painting in a local gallery that had recently came back from a conservator. There was a piece of cotton from the cleaning still on the painting. Weird!
Thank you, Julian for saving this lovely painting. In a disposable world, a serene true work of art did not end up forgotten in a landfill. Your skill as a restorer is gift from above.
I like this idea. Can't afford to have this but I'll make a donation to doctors without borders in your name.
That works, too.
I’m a local adjunct at a few community colleges- MFA from SAIC. I primarily teach printmaking and painting and am always fascinated by your pride in sharing traditional techniques, but also your willingness to experiment with new technology to become the best at what you do. I have been implementing self taught 3D printing and laser methods in my curriculum for 5 years or so and am always heartened to find examples of you doing the same in your videos. It’s my first time commenting since subscribing years ago, but thanks for the content!
When I first saw this painting, I was unimpressed. But, your restoration turned it beautiful! Amazing work! 🙂🥂
Seeing your videos has made me realize this is something I wish I would have known about and pursued when I was choosing my career path. Beautiful work, happy to have found you!
I find it simply amazing how you can take an old painting like that and breathe a new life into it as if it was never damaged. Keep up the great work 👌
I'm not sure how I ever stumbled into your channel, but I watch each video in amazement at the work you do.
Thank you, Julian, for rescuing this painting. As you may know, historically, humble sea shells were food for the poorest in society. They were collected by fishermen who couldn’t go to sea anymore, because of injury and/or old age. Now you have given it new life and donated it so generously to MSF. Aiding refugees in dire need. An amazing journey.
Heroes don't wear capes, but they often wear aprons.
An amazing cause and a great work for you to bring back to life.
LOVE THIS❤
Well worth restoring! That artist conveyed a moody and dramatic scene and somehow made it stunning at the same time! Your restoration broke through that haze of time and awakened that piece.
The treatment of the water on the sand really is riveting. It's not a common element, and the artist captured it perfectly.
Julian, this is lovely of you. Your work is excellent as always, but it’s wonderful that you’re able and willing to donate your time and effort to saving a painting, and in turn using that to maybe help save some lives. I’d love to be able to participate, but alas, owning fine art is not something I’ll ever be in a position to do. But this is a beautiful way to add care and kindness to a world that sorely needs it, and I’m glad to see you doing it. Who knows, maybe you can make this a thing, and once a year a new painting can get restored and auctioned like this. It’d be a wonderful legacy to add.
Love this idea as much as this video and the sentiment behind it.❤❤❤
Up to $12,000! Go, Orphan, GO! Excellent work, Julian!
Not bad for a painting that was destined for the trash bin.
It's out of my price range already, but all the money going to a good cause, I am happy it is.
The only way is 🆙.
The auction ended at $14,600
Ah, A Dutch painting almost landed in the trash. Although, as a Dutchie I have never heard of this painter, I am glad it was saved . And It looks very beautiful now!
I saw the result on eBay. Wonderful results for MSF/DWB. Thank you for your generosity.
That was amazing on so many levels. I'm glad this beautiful painting will live on!
You doing this makes my heart sing! Thank you Julian you are a very good soul.
This is one of the few videos on youtube I would very much like to like twice.
I am so frustrated! The the world is so imperfect, I want to cry! This is why I often visit your studio, so I can relax and watch your work. If only the world could be as perfect as your work!
Julian sets the bar very high, very very high. Well done. ✨
$14,600 😢 I can only dream. Beautiful work. Seeing the before and after brought tears to my eyes.
I think it's such a beautiful painting!!! Thank you for saving it, and for a fantastic purpose, too.
You are so need and tidy and good in your work, I follow other restorators and no one is as good as you are 🖌️👨🏻🎨
I am unfathomably early to this. I guess thats pretty cool.
The fact that Julian just…enters so casually yet so purposefully through a door so conversationally, VSauce style, made me feel uniquely intimidated to the point of alertness, when I felt the haze of 2 hours of sleep creeping up on me just 2 minutes ago.
I guess its also made me poetic.
I LOVE this painting! It's absolutely magical! I went to see the bidding, and unfortunately, it's already out of my range, but I want to thank you for saving it and donating to such a great cause! I know its new owner is going to adore it! 😍
I rarely love the paintings you work on, but this one! It speaks to me. If only I had a pile of money! For such a great cause too. Love it!
Amazing, a complete transformation. A joy to watch and witness such talent at work.
What a wonderful gesture to a fantastic charity. MSF does amazing work and, seeing the horrific images reaching our screens over the last year or so of seriously maimed babies and children, I can't think of a better organisation to support.
Felicitaciones por tu trabajo. Desde que he descubierto el canal no dejo de ver tus videos.
Gracias por tu gesto humanitario. El mundo necesita de este tipo de iniciativas.
Wonderful idea to auction off the painting. Had to have a little laugh to myself when Mr Baumgartner said he was going to do a 'belt and suspenders' job on the tear. We say belt and braces here in England. Such excellent work and definitely a miracle worker with paining restorations!!
So very nice. Saving this lovely painting once more proves that you're using your super-powers for good. Saved from the trash -- WOW! Just beautiful.
Always a joy to watch and learn about your skills and artistry when done so properly and professionally
What a fantastic journey the 'Orphan' has gone through. So much skill in a short space of time. A real privilege. Thank you!
Oh I wish I could afford to bid on this. This is one of those paintings that the more I look at it the better I like it. It really came to life when you got through with it.
This picture gives me a melancholic feeling. It made me feel sad at first, but when you cleaned it up, the way the sky shines, it made me happy. I know I'm probably exaggerating, but it seems like the phrase: after the rain always comes the sun. Get through the bad times, better things will come. Thank you for your work, and the donation to MSF. They deserve all the help.
This content truly shines when the provenance of the piece is part of the script, giving us more reason to care about the restoration. The charity auction aspect is a cherry on top (and a good click bait)
Julian,
you are always the hero of rescueing and i love to come home after a long day of work and see your wonderful work.
Thanks again for it.
Greetings from a fan of yours from Germany.
On behalf of Dutch heritage, many thanks from the Netherlands 😊
I'm unable to compete with another bid in the auction, but I'm thrilled it has reached the amount it already has. I suspect it might already be a record for a Pieters painting. It's not only a tribute to his work, but to yours, Julian. I'm sure your fan base here is watching with anticipation, just like I am. Thank you for your hard work. $14,600 with an hour to go on the auction!
This is probably painted in my hometown Katwijk, or in the neighbouring village of Scheveningen. Great job preserving it.
According to Wikipedia, Evert Pieters spent a lot of time in Katwijk so you're probably right.
This is by far my favorite painting that I've seen Julian work on and I've watched nearly every video since the inception of the channel.
Which is why it boggles my mind that the auction house and original owner were ready to throw it away
Dear Mr. Baumgartner.
👍👌👏 for the extremely well done work and video and 👍👌👏 for the generous donation.
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health in particular.
It got sold for 14.600$! SO good!! Thank you Julian, that was amazing!
Why the hell would anyone want to throw that painting away?!? It is a beautiful piece, great work as always Julian!
What a beautiful idea to save a painting and people at the same time. I love that we get you watch you do your magic repairing it and then the proceeds going to benefit a great organization that puts their lives on the line helping people in desperate need.
Thank you.
Thank you for donating your work to MSF! I am a proud (subscription-based) supporter of them for a while now. Maybe some people here feel like they have some money to spare for them, too? May, through all the crises our world faces, always exist a glimmer of hope in the shape of dedicated doctors trying to prevent the worst.
Me, too! Thanks, Julian, and thanks nilsp9426.
Congrats to you and Doctors Without Borders on a great auction and restoration ! ❤
Congratulations on your successful sale!
Is there no end to your talents 🙌🏻
I love that Julian calls the too-far -gone paintings “organ donors”.
Your usual great work Julian! It’s a shame that someone would want to throw away art. It is the work of someone’s imagination and skill and deserves to be appreciated and passed on to future generations for them to look at it to be appreciated and inspired by.
Wonderful!! Thank you for your donation!!❤
Incredibly generous of you to do this. ❤
Beautiful painting! Beautiful restoration. Whoever ends up with that painting will get a painting restored by a true artist in his own right. So glad it was saved from the trash.
Julian, you're a genius!
Thank you for your generosity in donating the proceeds to MSF - great idea, and lovely to see the painting so beautifully restored to life.
Best notification today. Right as I'm taking a break from a stressful workday (I've only been working 2 hours ).
If this painting could vocalize, I'm sure it would be crying with joy at its second chance. Thank you so much, Julian, for saving it. It breaks my heart see someone's hard work end up in the trash, be it a book, a piece of art, or even a musical instrument, so I'm so glad you agreed to rescue this painting from that fate.
I checked the auction at the start of the video, and the price was at $450. I checked again at the end, and it was $880. I can't afford to get in on that, but I can hope the painting fetches a good price for Doctors Without Borders and gets a loving home when it's all done.
If it could talk, the owner wouldn't have given it away.
What an amazing change in pre and post video. Wow
The artist is blessing you from the next world.
Such a beautiful painting😍 thank you, to give this painting and Artist chance to shine 🌹
Beautiful painting. Great that you recovered it 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Doctors without borders is such a worthy cause!
This is going to be such a wonderful prize for one of your fans. It has all our favourite techniques. Bridging, new tacking edge, creating impasto. New tacks, folded edges, included provenance. It’s a jolly shame you didn’t need washicozo! It will be like winning the lottery. 😄
I do not get why someone would simply throw this away... It's a lovely piece.
And a lovely job Julien, as always.
Iam dutch and the guy in this picture looks dressed like the area I grew up in.
I since moved to another country.
Would love to own it, but unfortunately it will be too much for me now probably.
Probably would cost as much to repair as the owner would expect to gain by the sale.
I don't know exactly when I started watching your videos, but I watched 'The Orphan' last night and I think that I'm caught up. You had me hooked from the first one. I know next to nothing about art and found it fascinating at what can and cannot (or very difficult to) be done to repair/restore/conserve a work of art. You are one of the first I watched and really liked your narrative style. You explain what you're doing and why. For every step of every painting. Stabilize the paint layer or not? Lining? Hot table treatment? What type of adhesive? Cleaner used? Type of varnish. Touch up pigment. Thank you so much for producing these videos. I was just 70 on the 3rd of January. Who says you're too old to learn? You have spoiled me. Now when I watch another conservator I will say "Why are you doing it like that? Julian wouldn't do it that way. I wonder why they didn't use washi koso." Keep up the wonderful work and the great videos.
I could watch these for hours :)
I have. LOL😂
Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank YOU!
I can’t stop watching these videos, it’s ridiculous!
Thanks- was looking forward to your next triumph over ruination. It never gets boring!
I was stunned when you told us that it was to be dumped. Thank you Julian for saving the painting and making money for MSF
