It is good that we remember the Human toll that was the reality of the games we play. Very touching. I recall similar letters from the Civil War, 50 years earlier in Ken Burns series. And so it is still.
Thank you for reading that letter. Often, when we talk about history, especially military history, we only focus on the battles, the tactics used, and the overall strategy of the opposing sides. In my opinion, we can lose sight of the humanity of the event, which is the more important story.
"Thanks Cody!" That's from my wife! Upon your strong recommendation of this game I purchased this one(great review by the way!). My Wife now has one more reason to kill me, as yet another game has separated money from my banking institution. LOL! Somber, and yet poignant ending(before the credits) Nice touch there Sir!
A magnificent review! Adding the letter from Captain May was a great touch. I'm already a GMT fan, and I'll be adding this one to my collection. By the way, have you had a chance to read "Somme" by Hugh Sebag-Montefiore? Its a recent book and contains some recently declassified WW1 info in the text. I do believe you would enjoy it, fellow history nerd.
Strike of the Eagle is an amazing game. One of my favorites and without the chrome you mention that possibly slows this one down. I'm hoping Academy come up with a sequel. Anyway, find a copy and play it..now.
There are a lot of good ones: Wings for the Baron, The Grizzled, The First World War. As far as straight wargames go, I like The Great War from PSC Games. Also, Axis & Allies WWII 1914 is fun, but long. All told, I'd have to say my favorite probably is Fields of Despair.
The Discriminating Gamer Excellent. Thank you. I will put it on my list. Have you ever thought about reviewing his Historical Board Gaming 1936? they have a new version coming out this summer. I believe they are also coming out with a World War One game.
The Discriminating Gamer www.historicalboardgaming.com/Global-War-1936-1945-Variant-Map_p_2029.html. Hopefully their updated version will be out soon, I will be giving it a try. You need to have probably couple sets of Axis and Allies in order to play as it doesn’t come as a complete boxed game or order pieces from HBG. It is an investment to fully build out the required minis and likely appeals to players of Axis and Allies Global 1940.
Wow advised Napoleon, I never would have thought. What happened at Waterloo? Moscow didn't end well. This looks very interesting. Other WWI games that look interesting are Red Poppies & Heroes of The Great War 1914: Limanowa.
Thanks for this video. I have a number of First World War games in my library and always enjoy learning about more. As a historian fascinated by the Great War, I encourage you to visit the National WWI Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri. www.theworldwar.org/visit/plan-your-visit I can also recommend some excellent games stores and bbq joints in KC.
Fantastic. I almost went to the University of Kansas near there for my PhD program, but instead I'm going to Texas. Maybe I can get up there sometime. Sounds cool. Thanks.
oh man you described the UK (even GB would be OK) as England... I guess judging by US TV and Film it's quite common but please you are disregarding Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and other islands by saying England!
Indeed. My apologies. We Americans are not all Californians and New Yorkers, so I understand. The last thing I would want to do is diminish the contributions of Scots, Welsh, and Irish in that Conflict.
I know there was no malicious intention and I wasn't trying to make you feel bad. Just one of those things that grinds. Like I said its common place sadly. Cheers bud

Indeed. Thank you.
great video, this is the only video that explains how this game works in a clear manner
Thank you, sir.

Nice touch there Sir!
Thanks! Happy to help!
I love this game too! Had plenty of fun with this one. However, I've never seen the Germans win and I think it may be imbalanced that way
Thanks.
That ending alone is a reason for you to keep doing this (in whatever capacity possible).
* applause though not good for my tearducts *
Thank you, sir. We'll see what the future holds.
Beautiful touch at the end....
Thanks.
Can't wait to get my copy to the table!
I think you'll get a kick out of it.
That is one somber ending...
True.... but did you watch to the end of the ending?
It can't all be candy canes and rainbow dreams!
so sad; but amazingly eloquent; it seems people don't know how to write like that anymore.

I have not read that book. But sounds like it would be right up my alley. Thanks!
"...and Luxembourg..." 👍🙄
Captain May... Never Forget 💝
Robert Moffitt Indeed.
That ending...
Yes. There was an ending...
Well thats put a smile on my face for the rest of the day. :)
That's what I do...
Great work! Keep it up!😊
Have you tried strike of the eagel -polish-Soviet war 1919-1920 from academy games?
Nope. I've not played that one. Maybe somewhere down the line...
Strike of the Eagle is an amazing game. One of my favorites and without the chrome you mention that possibly slows this one down. I'm hoping Academy come up with a sequel. Anyway, find a copy and play it..now.
Alredy got one! 😊
I will look into it.
The Discriminating Gamer I hope you will like it!
Have you played Strike of the Eagle? I know it is not WWI but just after.
Nope. Haven't played that one.
SotE is definitely one of my favorite Block games.
I love learning about history but I forget most of details shortly after. Great review as always :)
Danke!
How is the game with the solo scenario? Worth buying JUST for the solo scenario (as I can only play solo).
I haven't played it solo, so I can't comment on that, unfortunately.
What is your favorite WW1 game?

@@wartable I am not familiar with that one. I'll keep an eye out for it.

What is the song in German at the beginning? ty
"Ich Grolle Nicht," by Ron Meixwell. It is (or was) part of the free TH-cam audio library.

I advised him early on... When he was winning... Haven't heard of those other games, but I'll have to look into them. Thanks!
Eventually he stopped listening and it all went to @#$# right? :)
Indeed.
I forgot Rolica didn't go well either. But bad cards and dice rolls what can you do. (Rolica play-through).
Thank you for the expatiation. I knew it had to be something like that.
Great video, it irks me a bit to call the entente/allies Britain, France, USA, and belgium, but regardless the quote at the end is a nice inclusion.

I encouraged Cody to visit the National WW1 monument and sent him the link a few months ago. Maybe if we both twist his arm... ;)
And send money...
U Scamp... :)
