Coldplay: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 15 มี.ค. 2020
- This performance was recorded on January 23, 2020. We will continue releasing Tiny Desk videos of shows that had already been taped. In light of current events, NPR is postponing new live tapings of Tiny Desk Concerts. In the meantime, check out Tiny Desk (home) concerts! They’re recorded by the artists in their home. It’s the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Watch Coldplay play "Cry Cry Cry", "Viva La Vida", "Broken", "1999" (Prince cover) and "Champion Of The World" at the Tiny Desk.

March 12, 2020 | Robin Hilton -- Shortly into Coldplay's soundcheck, singer Chris Martin cut off the opening song, "Cry Cry Cry," right in the middle. His band had brought along a nine-piece choir, and he asked them to take "Cry Cry Cry" one more time. When one of the singers asked if there was a problem, Martin replied, "No, I'm just in f****** heaven right now!"
That feeling was obvious throughout the performance. Watching Martin at the keys, with the For Love Choir behind him and Coldplay guitarist Jonny Buckland at his side, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was the happiest day of his life. Laughing, bouncing to the music and playing off the crowd, Martin and company gave one of the most jubilant, uplifting and memorable performances we've ever had at the Tiny Desk.
Watching their gospel-infused take on "Viva La Vida," it was hard not to beam with joy; hearing their stirring cover of Prince's "1999" brought on a mass urge to leap up and dance. The entire set was a perfectly executed showcase of the band's creative spirit and love of community through music.
"Viva La Vida" was the only older track Coldplay performed, in addition to the surprise Prince cover. (The band had just performed at a Prince tribute show in January.) The other three songs - "Cry Cry Cry," "Broken" and "Champion of the World" - are all from the band's stellar new album, Everyday Life, which was recorded with some of the singers on hand for the Tiny Desk. Martin joked that, "In a very real way, they've Photoshopped our songs to be much better than they actually are." Whether or not that's true, for at least this one sunny afternoon at the NPR Music offices, the choir - and Coldplay's inspired reworking of its own music - felt transcendent.

Whoever put an ad in the middle of viva la vida deserves to be fired...
Jamie Kilgore I thought the exact same thing😂😂
@@stickfigureslauralee good points, I also did mention Patreon as well. I don't have cable and spend most of my watch time on TH-cam so I think the 10 bucks a month or whatever it is is totally worth it. I then am a patreon member for a few channels as well. If you're all about anarchy then adblock is free and cancels ads :)
@@NosillaWilla but that's what TH-cam wants us to do! Or, they could stop being dicks and not put ads during the best parts of the video and everyone can be happy

the unexpected relevance of 1999...
The good old days😊
When we can get back to normal, this video is how it'll feel. Glorious, we'll get there
Chris' huge genuine smile/excitement when they cheer for Viva la Vida is so sweet. dude has played countless gigantic arenas but he still gets excited by a small room.
Theres warmth and special musical excitements when in playing in small acoustic settings like this. Pure happiness, both to singers and listeners. Gigantic christmas present
💯💯 what I noticed too how all of them light up huge smiles so happy so present , the power of music 🙏🙏❤️❤️
Why does everyone sound better on tiny desk? No auto tune, no editing, just their lovely raw voices and instruments. how it should be
I don't know but Chris Martin's lives performances always are amazing, the same as well as in the studio.
I mean apart of it is just josh Rogosin being such a good audio engineer.
Agreed, I love music stripped down. ESP today sometimes we overly produce adding too many voice synthesizers and layers on top , whereas I think the simpler the better, showcasing their true talent and gives a sense of realness of the human experience , authenticity, and something so powerful about a group coming together and jamming out live all with smiles fully present enjoying and feeling the music. The power of music is incredible ❤❤❤
It's like NPR has been saving this for when the world needed it the most
TOTALLY!
Amen
Most definitely 🙏🏻

I found many concerts from tiny desk sounding better than their Tidal HiFi variant. Take Mac Miller for example.
This is the beauty of a live performance, a different experience

I totally came looking for it and was blown away by the choir and the music too thanks Lewis lol 🫶 “Esk Oo Eh!”
The enjoyment that Chris gets just from getting to perform with others is the most palpable vibe ever ✨
I was just thinking about how this vibe reminded me of going to an actual Coldplay concert. The alchemy between people... It's the same feeling. They just make it happen and take everyone with them and tou couldn't resist it even if you wanted to!
I know some other bands can do this too but with Coldplay it's something else
Joyful 😊😊❤

If you do anything in your life see Coldplay live it’s like tear jerking
I did last month and honestly it felt like a life changing moment it's hard to explain🥺❤️
Greatest concert I’ve attended. Felt like a religious experience
I saw them live just after Yellow released but they were still (I guess) finishing up the gigs they'd signed up for beforehand - because it was in a small church which could only hold about 150 people. I was right front and centre, I actually took some of Chris' plectrums right from his mic stand when he wasn't looking (I lost them somewhere along the line)
You can’t help but smile while listening to this version of Viva La Vida
Duuuuddeeeeeee I have goosebumps
@@darkeyiii bad day?

@@darkeyiii you must have serious problems, fool..
Allthejazz lol u need to chill. If he really didn’t want to sing viva la vida he wouldn’t have taken the time to make a rendition w backup singers. There are artists who do get tired of the the songs they create, especially if they’re popular, but there are others who truly appreciate the great feedback they get from creating songs that are timeless.
Chris Martin is obviously having sooo much fun. It's a treat to watch.
Absolutely. Wonderful!!
They are all having a ton of fun, one of the most fun tiny desk concerts I've seen

Just came back to listen to the "noise" at @4:22 that Lewis Capaldi was talking about in his Tiny desk concert.

His name is Dorian Holley and yes, the man is a genius. He worked with Michael since the "Bad Tour" if I remember correctly.
Couldn’t stop the tears while watching this. Life has been so surreal and stressful lately and this just gave me hope in humanity.

That’s one of the factors I felt in love with Coldplay for . Making money factors means that Coldplay has to produce a big amount of concerts in overcrowded stadiums with people crazily yelling and singing but THE BEST PERFORMANCES and style of Coldplay are glowing in small spaces/small groups of people and acoustic style , I love how the improvise during the patterns of the song making every some different than a concert before … hope they keep playing forever

i love that this moment will be on the internet forever. Let's go, mankind.
Internet will not be forever, and that's just a sad fact.
Jas Bataille of course nothing is going to be forever. However we can still savor the sweet moment internet can grant us, and I believe it’s more likely that mankind will die off before internet, unless someone else invents a “better” internet.
"And I discovered that my castles stand, on pillars of salt, pillars of sand". I've always thought Viva La Vida was a truly exceptional song, and I'm fairly neutral about Coldplay in general (very good early B-sides though), but my god that lyric has real resonance in the heart of a pandemic.
Michael Kennedy Have you heard Strawberry Swing? That song is amazing, brings me to tears
Yes Ger, I have; It has such a calming, hypnotic melody. I've got a bit addicted to Such a Rush recently. Might be because of the lyric: "Such a rush to do nothing at all, such a rush to get nowhere at all".
I've found most of Mylo Xyloto is doing the same for me right now (Us Against The World, UFO, Every Teardrop, Up In Flames). Coldplay do NOT get enough respect for their lyrics.
Ozymandias by Percy Shelley
I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said-“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”
No matter what in life, a choir always saves everything.
wow Champion of the world sounded soo awesome! Nailed the chorus!
