I think what broke Kuribayashi the most is that she probably imagined her perfect guy as someone that had accomplished all the things Itami did. Sometimes life is stranger than fiction a lesson she learned the hard way.
What broke Kuribayashi is that she's been trying to get SOF training and a billet her entire career and never let in no matter how hard she tried or worked.
it is said that being a Ranger and S is Kuribayashi bigest aim since she first enrolled in the Military. So yeah her expresion is when she found out that the superior she despise so much for being "non military material" is atually a certified officer of both Kuribayashi soldier life dream.
yet historically special force is made for the smart unruly soldiers to do the near impossible exactly because "traditional" doctrine like doing exactly what they are told to, march uniformly, etc doesn't work at most spec ops job. what i suspect is the trainer at school notices his odd behavior and always asking for 150% yet he still barely deliver it while slacking when his peer is doing 100% perfect but with too much effort.
@@fltfathin could be true though the real reason is probably since Itami during certain exercises would just disappear for hours to go read things, the base had to deal with the fact that either Itami is naturally an expert at stealth or the whole base was more incompetent than the worst recruit, I think the prime minister asks a general about it and he replies that they try not to think about which one it is.

What are some of the roles that "special force" have in the military? Unconventional warfare. It does seem like an unconventional "war". One that started by what seemed like invasion by Japan, into peace-effort, assisting various factions within the kingdom, supporting ones that allign to Japan's main objective.
It's further proof that he learned an entire new language in a short span of time, took on a mature dragon with a small inexperienced crew and rocket launchers, and has no quarrel on punching SOB royal prince from another world.
Lieutenant in my unit was airborne and ranger qualified back when he was a lowly sergeant before he did Green to Gold to become an officer in order to get out of my battalion. Big Army took a look at his service record, noted that he had several years training in our MOS, noted that our unit had a critical lack of officers, and sent him back. Giant weeb, collected gundam figures and played Warhammer Fantasy Battle, had a really expensive gaming PC that he built himself and regularly upgraded every few months. Was a really chill dude and friendly to talk to, would always stick around to help out and to suffer in solidarity wherever we were stuck doing some shit detail and the like. Then he abruptly left without much warning because his SF packet was finally accepted and he had to go through selection. Never saw him again, so he must have passed or else he would have wound up back in my unit again
His codename is Avenger(Fate reference). One of the traits that all Avenger had is hatred, resentment and all kinds of negative emotion(either from themselves or their enemies) make them stronger.
Its really not that surprising if you have met any special forces operators... They are just like the rest of us most of the time. Ironically I know a guy that is a prior operator and also loves my little pony of all things... They are also, most of the time enveloped in things that take their mind off what they do. But on duty or when needing to be serious, watch out. The same as Itami if you haven't watched the way he carries himself on duty vs off he is very much special forces...

TBF getting the badges is the equivalent of getting professional licenses, with each badge testing different capabilities. If I remembered correctly Ranger courses requires skills such as force recon and extreme survival conditions, which aren't easy.
@@benlex5672 that medal is rangers. From what I heard in jeitai forum, sdf have slightly different system than us. Sdf rangers are slightly above us airborne and their sf is slightly below us sf. It also explained in LN that Itami and Tomita was in same ranger group. With Tomita stopped at rangers while Itami got forced to do sf training.
That is what many people didn't think ahead and seem him plot armor that and those. While he capable of setup the damn c4 from the ground. Shoot the damn vine with just pistol. Climb a tree faster than the damn Minotaur. Infiltration of the damn castle to help Fina and the King with negotiate with the current ruler without much support. I served as a lowly corporal Combat engineer in my heydays in the army and I came across some of these red beret types. Well there are your a few stereotype Hollywood machoism but there a ton that are literally the most unassuming folk. But many were even considered nerdy (I knew one who read a huge number of Tom Clancy novels) or complete goofballs off duty lol. But to wear that red beret does mean they have something that rest of us will never hope or even strive to attain.
well i had meet a "special force of the us army" but i'm the kind that HATE militaries that i call, dogs, murderer and criminals but at least this one was an open minded and "good" human i have respect for him as a human BUT he know if he was on uniform i will simply don't care about anything he said! I still don't respect militaries even a little but outside of the uniform somes are good humans! it's just i WON'T respect a military but i can respect a man ( even if he is a military by work) outside the "army Sh*t"! @@MikMoenThe Army have corporal ranks as well. E-4s in the Army are Corporals and Specialists. Basically a Corporal is an E-4 with NCO authority and/or responsibility.
Rory in court? Seriously? Not even close. The best scene (and this show has quite a few great scenes), is the homage to Apocalypse Now scene. Right from the moment the guy says they've got the helicopters, loudspeakers, and Wagner cd ready.
There are so many good scenes in this, like when Rory's "sister" finds out Itami killed a dragon, or when the squaddie who freaked gets to beat up the kingdoms soldiers.
The 1st thing he did in episode 1 when literal roman men and monsters appear was to keep his calm. That's just shows he was highly trained even if he was off duty and was buying manga.
I'm a supervisor and I actually like my lazy team members more than the hardworking ones. They usually finish the tasks I give them in the most efficient and creative way possible so they can slack off more.
When i was in reservist duty, my CO shared with us he is always amazed by us. In our off time we slack but when on execise we often came up with out of e box solution tat make hell lot of tactical sense
Itami is the Japanese version of WW2's mad Jack, just more rational. If you don't know MAD JACK is a British soldier who fought in WW2 with a long bow, bagpipes and a freaking Scottish broadsword, he was really "lazy" to the point of instead of doing training on a hot day he brought a chair and went sunbathing. However during the war he rode a motorcycle while playing bagpipes and swinging his broadsword and ambushing enemy position and scoring many medals and taking hundreds of POWS, and seeing they were facing a mad man with a broadsword and bagpipes in the middle of a 20th century war on one of the biggest battlefields spanning a whole fucking continent and the man is not dying then it's fair they fucking surrender. All i know is the Germans received nightmares in both world wars in the first one with the Russians coming back to life, and in the second one with mad Jack making them think the Scottish called on the ghosts of their ancestors. All in all Germans hate zombies.

It's mainly Hollywood that makes it look like they are all vin diesels and the Rocks, but with different hair styles. The Irony is that you may have an ex SF as one of your colleagues at work and you would never know it, because he does not fit the stereotype.
Some people are just really born for it and have the talent and its like any other kind of job. Just because you're in the special forces doesn't mean you can't have your own personality
actually, it was explained that he got into the special forces on a technicality; after slacking off in officer school, he was tossed into ranger school with the threat that if he were to fail then he wouldn't get time off for the next doujin convention. When he passed they were so pissed that they sent him off to be target practice for special forces, but they couldn't even catch him once, so they had no choice but to add him to the roster as you can't have an inferior that makes your entire team look like a joke.
It does explain how when the chips are down he suddenly kicks ass and is a super soldier. Even if you’re a slacker you don’t get through special forces training without being some level of deadly.

From personal experience I can tell you, some operators are what you would expect; cold. There is a certain train of thought that arises from being deprived of the world's luxuries and exposed to so many inconveniences (sleep depravation, food etc). Makes you look at the world as an outsider. Most stay there, finding purpose in family and work, some take their mind of things. Some are able to have a switch, when is game time...it is game time. Some learn to enjoy it, some sadistically search for it and others are your comic relief with realistic optimism.
Not to disagree, but tragically it seems that many don't have a switch. And once their done fighting and they can't flip it they kill themselves. 22 a day is just sad.
@@Wrenchingandnursing Spec-ops seem to be have an easier time than many other veterans. I guess they just get more time to process through it, and have a lot of psych support. They're also well trained and well educated so they do have more options than most vets.

Itami despite that he's an otaku and always love read manga, he can done his job as quickly and as efficiently as possible (Spoiler from the manga) In one of the Special Force's operation to save a Japanese hostage, the squad leader took a reference of their training with Itami about how Itami always think and act outside of box and never act quite nervous and intense (by literally grab a hostage from his opponent, propose a deal and will return his hostage ''bit by bit'' if his opponent refused) and because of this they're able to get out even though things do go south quite fast at the end.
But what I don't understand is how they only sent a small amount of soldiers to do it. The best thing they had done is bring at least two tanks and a Military truck as that thing can't be outrun by horses

If sdf attack from the front with lots of soldiers or tanks, the imperial soldiers might kill the prisoner before retreating. And what's more news worthy than a few SF operators rescuing prisoner.? I suppose the Australian equivalent would be something like being a Commando... and yeah it checks out. Itami's behaviour towards everything is something that would be considered normal for an elite soldier. I grew up an army brat; my mother and father retired from the army a Sergeants of the Ordinace and Armor Corps respectively. So growing up, my dad would take me to pubs, where a lot of ex-military would frequent. I grew up listening to the stories of veterans as far back as WW2. I heard how in Vietnam they were forced to shoot children, because they were strapped with explosives and ordered to go into a group of soldiers; it was either shoot the kid and let only the kid die... or the kid dies in the explosion, taking dozens of soldiers with him/her... the choice is obvious, but it still haunted that man to the day he told me about it... and I assume it still does. I've also met former Commando's... and they were all pretty relaxed; they would tell me men like them would be 1 of 2 things; completely chill or completely nuts. But in both cases, when it was time to act, they would all be serious, their years of training would kick in. Itami is the same
a bit late to mention this but it is mentioned in the novel series be became friends with the sec-def because they meet in a Otaku conference. He often buys otaku things for the sec-def as a request from him since due to his high position he cannot be seen out in public exposing his otaku life.
Yep. Actually slackers are more effective inventors and more creative as they have motivation to improve things so they can work less. If you are hard worker too much you just work hard.
@@Petaurista13 That's a cliché. Slackers are slackers because they CAN'T think of easier ways to do stuff they hate, so they simply don't do it. Hard working people will often have a lot of routine and will have a much easier time figuring out how to do their tasks quicker and with less effort.
I have a friend who is super lazy but also extremely intelligent. Probably the smartest in our group. But he's so fucking lazy and depressing that we're convinced he has an aura debuff that sucks out all the energy in a room ad makes you just want to lay down and sleep. Eveytime we go to his house, all we want to do is either sleep, eat or play games. But he's like this. He will find the most efficient way to do things to maximize his time to just slack around. He was assigned to a government position and the work in his desk piled up everyday was supposed to take an entire day. He found a way to do it in under 2 hours, and then just rest or go out of office for the next 6 hours or more. He basically just clocks in, does his work in 2 hours, leaves thr office, goes out to the mall and just play Tekken in the Arcade or watch a movie in theatre, go back to the office to clock out. Sometimes he does other things, like go home and play games on his PC (like that one time when Dragon Age Inquisition came out and he wanted to play it all the time). Edit: I'd like to mention he didn't do well in school tho. Not because he was dumb. But because he was just lazy for things like that. Eventually decided the diploma wasn't actually worth the trouble. His brain operates in a pros and cons kind of thing, and when given a task, he will find the best way to achieve desired results without having to deal with everything in-between that completely was unncessary and ultimately considered a waste of time (it can be as simple as stocking the exact amount of paper in a printer beforehand so he doesn't have to gather up the extra unused paper and return it to a drawer).
Itami is the guy who does bare minimum to pass, but when he is actually needed, he goes full super saiyan. I mean, if he was ambitious, he would be dangerous.

More like the guy is a complete lazy ass. They quite literally said he was denied promotion due to poor personal evaluation, he quite literally didnt want any more work. But you know what they say, the lazier you are the more efficiently you get stuff done. Which just nets you more promotions since youre getting stuff done. Its ironic really.
Because SF selection does not emcompass the life of an elite soldier it's merely the process to weed out people who have no business being there. Whether it's Buds or selection, the real soldiering comes afterwards,

Itami is the poster boy for: 'I just want to do my job and go home'. His superiors couldn't stand this attitude when they saw he had talent and aptitude. They saw him 'barely pass' and went 'He could be SO MUCH MORE.' So they shoveled responsibility on him in the hopes that would spark him to 'mature'. Itami took all these courses in and just... did them. Just another thing to do at work. Now he's the most overqualified slacker on the face of the Earth.
I really want a scene where Itami does some John Wick level shit to showcase how much of a badass he really is. No way a man who can pass into the Special Forces is weak, or a bad shot.
I'm surprised the chick didn't get slapped with a court-martial for repeatedly striking a superior officer. Although I don't blame her for getting fooled-- I have a couple of drinking buddies what happen to be combat elite-types, one of them is a Ranger and was attached to Delta (dunno if it was his unit or if was him alone, didn't bother getting the details), and by the way he acts off-duty, you would think he's a slightly largish gaming nerd (dude always wears loose clothes and hunches over when hanging with civvies). Gamer-ranger once got into a shouting match in the infirmary when he was out of uniform and some corporal chick tried giving him the business until she was made aware that he was (1. a Sargent and (2. a Ranger and she pretty much had the same reaction as Kuribayashi because his gamer-nerd ass destroyed her world-view and she nearly shit herself because she thought she was gonna get court-martialed (she didn't put her hands on him, though, so it was just a shouting match). Didn't hear that story from him, though, but from his battle-buddy who went out for drinks with us a few months ago, gamer-ranger didn't like bragging, which only encourage battle-buddy, especially after a few rounds.
Lemme guess, his instructors are not satisfied that he did not get killed during Ranger or SF training, they basically just threw him off a plane, with a malfunctioning chute, and he still managed to survive?
@@karthus006 not really There's one challenge where the General made both team fight against each other until they surrender. Any methods are acceptable. Itami quickly took hostage of said general and threatened the opposing teams to surrender or he's going to pluck all of his hairs from his nearly bald head. Itami won and of course the general hold a grudge against him. Fastforward to the ranger award ceremony, the general realized Itami doesn't have the airborne (paratrooper) badge. "You can't have the ranger badge without an airborne badge. Lucky for you I have signed you up for that. Chrismas? New Year? You will get no holidays until you get that badge, even on weekends."

Read the light novel Gate: Weigh Anchor. It focuses on the JMSDF mission on the Special Region. Ofc with Itami as one of the MC. The story is set 4 years after the final battle and Itami reconnected the 2 worlds via an "artificial" gate
He should train as an scout ranger too. Like the Filipino guys(they excel at it since their battlefield is the jungle) Those guys are specialized in stealth. He should train for it too.
Nah if he ends up in S that's modeled literally after a Tier 1 and 2 Special Forces groups it's safe to say that he also knows how to train in jungle warfare and hell even irregular and unconventional warfares
you see, this is a type of person that shows doesn't bluntly show his worth to the world, he just does what he does best and people notice these small details.
A lot of soldiers from elite units are the cream of the crop and highly recompensed by their commanding officers to get there. In addition. they have powerful iron clad wills to match. What makes this hilarious, he seems his has the knack for it but was just lazy and pissed every CO he had to become a highly trained solider. I guess with his strong will, he is a die hard otaku that barely edges out his training. With that being said, he does seem to be a die hard otaku anymore and I think it would be funny of him in the series to always constantly reading or watching something since he would be missing a lot being off world. Maybe he is actually living one of the dreams of an otaku, being isekai-ed, so those fictions dont seem cool anymore.
The reason he was not yet fired is because his superiors know that they are giving him rewards thats why they raise their evaluation of him to give him more work
I like how in the show makes a big deal about his American Ranger qualifications, and him being part of a special forces group modeled after American SF groups, but then like two episodes later the show completely clowns on American special forces literally forces them to admit that they are "completely outclassed" by the JSDF special forces.
I mean they were also expecting them to send SF teams for them, so it gives you an edge to know that someone is coming. I mean in war intelligence is the most valuable resource, and well they had the advantage, since they could force the other party's hand, and make them scramble teams to make use of a window of opportunity to capture people from the other world. I would mostly say that in the tactical context given it was a race against time, and people tend to be sloppy under pressure, usually Special Forces train for a mission, and I am pretty sure that the teams they sent weren't really given the chance to prepare like they would have preferred, and it was obvious to the people in the JSDF that other countries would send teams, so they had the ability to prepare.

The Americans, didn't say they weren't as prepared, or make any mention of how little prep or how disadvantageous the situation was, because the Anime wasn't shitting on prep time. It's a jingoist propaganda piece and was saying that JSDF SF have training and skill so superior to America (and simultaneously China and Russia) that The Americans say shit like, "We've never faced anyone this good before EVER!" It was the anime's way of trying to say, "My country is better at this than your country." THAT's why it's ironic that they're making a big deal of Itachi's Ranger training and American SF classification. "Haha, even lazy otaku can qualify for panty dropping Ranger and SF qualifications!" And then two episodes later, "Ranger and American Delta Force are inferior to our Japanese devotion and national superiority!"
To be fair, it was multiple spec ops teams from several countries in the heart of another country's home turf, with their intel compromised, and a battle demigoddess that was literally impervious to injury. The thing people have to understand about Special Operations units, is that most of the training doesn't go in to making them more powerful fighters. It goes in to making them better at operating without support and infiltrating deep into contested territory. You're trained up to resist the unpleasantness of not having a nice bed under your back every night. You're trained to make your limited ammo last longer. You're trained to endure far longer, and far more intense conditions where every other person would effectively 'Eff this shit, I'm going home.' And it works, because where Special Forces show up, is not where the enemy expects, so they are DEVASTATING. Like a fox in a hen house... If that fox was trained to avoid alerting the guard dog and use wire cutters on the chicken wire. But if a regular force makes contact with a special forces unit, the immediate thing you see from the special forces unit is an attempt to make a big noise, then break contact to escape getting steamrolled. No matter how skilled their marksmanship, no matter how badass their endurance skills, no special forces unit can survive a hail of bullets, or getting pinned down by a fire team radioing in artillery coordinates. The groups encountering each other and getting mulched were on equal footing. But between home turf advantage, intel the other teams were coming, and a 960 year old near indestructible drunken murder-loli who just got blue-balled coming out to play... Yes. Yes they were very out classed.

The Americans bitching happens before they encounter Rory or the other two foreign countries. They are engaging Japanese Special Forces, and hiding from them. Then, they call in a special political favor to call the JSDF off. The JSDF backs off, but the show pulls a gotcha, and reveals that the JSDF have actually been engaging three spec ops teams simultaneously, and it's only after they back off that the various foreign agents run face first into each other, and each is surprised to learn the other is even there. THAT'S how elite the JSDF silenced shooters were. Big ol national pride hard on time.
I was assigned to a SF unit back in Afghanistan. Before I continue, that doesn't mean I'm SF. I never went through their training. I will never be as cool as SF or rangers. I was only apart of their S2. Itami is is your run of the mill SF operator. This is pretty tame compared to more extreme cases. Plus, he's got nothing on tankers. An Abrams is a mobile armored basement
He's mastered the art of doing just enough to get the job done, regardless of the job. Basically a trait most SF operators have done, they do the job and try to keep their heads down, attracting attention in the military is generally never a good thing, it tends to land you with more work.
As far as the US goes. I met a few guys who enlisted and ended up in the same position Itami did(not for the same reasons). I get the cold-hearted and efficient demeaner they're supposed to give off but at the end of the day they're people with a specific skillset and thought process who, like everybody else, want to go back to their loved ones. I would be a lot more afraid of someone who's objective is to get back home at the end of the day than someone who's objective is to kill someone.
this is priceless, bc i know a lot of gamers and otakus who went to the military and are officers now, they have their degree and even went to a tour of duty and back, people who did some work, gave zero fucks and somehow are where they are and despite all odds, success seems to find them. one dude, we'll name him charlie for now, some years back, while his CO tired of seeing him slacking off, and yelling at him wasn't working, decided to just send him to the GruMec(Brazilian Equivalent to the Navy Seals) with a side note "make him quit" He graduated and now is training the new cadets lol

yet historically special force is made for the smart unruly soldiers to do the near impossible exactly because "traditional" doctrine like doing exactly what they are told to, march uniformly, etc doesn't work at most spec ops job. what i suspect is the trainer at school notices his odd behavior and always asking for 150% yet he still barely deliver it while slacking when his peer is doing 100% perfect but with too much effort.

What are some of the roles that "special force" have in the military? Unconventional warfare. It does seem like an unconventional "war". One that started by what seemed like invasion by Japan, into peace-effort, assisting various factions within the kingdom, supporting ones that allign to Japan's main objective.
It's further proof that he learned an entire new language in a short span of time, took on a mature dragon with a small inexperienced crew and rocket launchers, and has no quarrel on punching SOB royal prince from another world.
If you watch the anime the parts where he goes into combat mode he is cold, effective and doesn't hesitate.

Lieutenant in my unit was airborne and ranger qualified back when he was a lowly sergeant before he did Green to Gold to become an officer in order to get out of my battalion. Big Army took a look at his service record, noted that he had several years training in our MOS, noted that our unit had a critical lack of officers, and sent him back. Giant weeb, collected gundam figures and played Warhammer Fantasy Battle, had a really expensive gaming PC that he built himself and regularly upgraded every few months. Was a really chill dude and friendly to talk to, would always stick around to help out and to suffer in solidarity wherever we were stuck doing some shit detail and the like.
Then he abruptly left without much warning because his SF packet was finally accepted and he had to go through selection. Never saw him again, so he must have passed or else he would have wound up back in my unit again

Its really not that surprising if you have met any special forces operators... They are just like the rest of us most of the time. Ironically I know a guy that is a prior operator and also loves my little pony of all things... They are also, most of the time enveloped in things that take their mind off what they do. But on duty or when needing to be serious, watch out. The same as Itami if you haven't watched the way he carries himself on duty vs off he is very much special forces...

TBF getting the badges is the equivalent of getting professional licenses, with each badge testing different capabilities. If I remembered correctly Ranger courses requires skills such as force recon and extreme survival conditions, which aren't easy.

It also explained in LN that Itami and Tomita was in same ranger group. With Tomita stopped at rangers while Itami got forced to do sf training.

I served as a lowly corporal Combat engineer in my heydays in the army and I came across some of these red beret types.
Well there are your a few stereotype Hollywood machoism but there a ton that are literally the most unassuming folk.
But many were even considered nerdy (I knew one who read a huge number of Tom Clancy novels) or complete goofballs off duty lol.

When i was in reservist duty, my CO shared with us he is always amazed by us. In our off time we slack but when on execise we often came up with out of e box solution tat make hell lot of tactical sense

If you don't know MAD JACK is a British soldier who fought in WW2 with a long bow, bagpipes and a freaking Scottish broadsword, he was really "lazy" to the point of instead of doing training on a hot day he brought a chair and went sunbathing. However during the war he rode a motorcycle while playing bagpipes and swinging his broadsword and ambushing enemy position and scoring many medals and taking hundreds of POWS, and seeing they were facing a mad man with a broadsword and bagpipes in the middle of a 20th century war on one of the biggest battlefields spanning a whole fucking continent and the man is not dying then it's fair they fucking surrender.
All i know is the Germans received nightmares in both world wars in the first one with the Russians coming back to life, and in the second one with mad Jack making them think the Scottish called on the ghosts of their ancestors. All in all Germans hate zombies.

Some people are just really born for it and have the talent and its like any other kind of job. Just because you're in the special forces doesn't mean you can't have your own personality
actually, it was explained that he got into the special forces on a technicality; after slacking off in officer school, he was tossed into ranger school with the threat that if he were to fail then he wouldn't get time off for the next doujin convention. When he passed they were so pissed that they sent him off to be target practice for special forces, but they couldn't even catch him once, so they had no choice but to add him to the roster as you can't have an inferior that makes your entire team look like a joke.

From personal experience I can tell you, some operators are what you would expect; cold. There is a certain train of thought that arises from being deprived of the world's luxuries and exposed to so many inconveniences (sleep depravation, food etc). Makes you look at the world as an outsider. Most stay there, finding purpose in family and work, some take their mind of things.
Some are able to have a switch, when is game time...it is game time. Some learn to enjoy it, some sadistically search for it and others are your comic relief with realistic optimism.
Not to disagree, but tragically it seems that many don't have a switch. And once their done fighting and they can't flip it they kill themselves. 22 a day is just sad.
@@Wrenchingandnursing Spec-ops seem to be have an easier time than many other veterans. I guess they just get more time to process through it, and have a lot of psych support. They're also well trained and well educated so they do have more options than most vets.

In one of the Special Force's operation to save a Japanese hostage, the squad leader took a reference of their training with Itami about how Itami always think and act outside of box and never act quite nervous and intense (by literally grab a hostage from his opponent, propose a deal and will return his hostage ''bit by bit'' if his opponent refused) and because of this they're able to get out even though things do go south quite fast at the end.
But what I don't understand is how they only sent a small amount of soldiers to do it. The best thing they had done is bring at least two tanks and a Military truck as that thing can't be outrun by horses

Itami's behaviour towards everything is something that would be considered normal for an elite soldier.
I grew up an army brat; my mother and father retired from the army a Sergeants of the Ordinace and Armor Corps respectively.
So growing up, my dad would take me to pubs, where a lot of ex-military would frequent.
I grew up listening to the stories of veterans as far back as WW2.
I heard how in Vietnam they were forced to shoot children, because they were strapped with explosives and ordered to go into a group of soldiers; it was either shoot the kid and let only the kid die... or the kid dies in the explosion, taking dozens of soldiers with him/her... the choice is obvious, but it still haunted that man to the day he told me about it... and I assume it still does.
I've also met former Commando's... and they were all pretty relaxed; they would tell me men like them would be 1 of 2 things; completely chill or completely nuts.
But in both cases, when it was time to act, they would all be serious, their years of training would kick in.

He passed both ranger and sf, so by comparison (idk how accurate) in Aus, he passed the training of commando and SASR.

a bit late to mention this but it is mentioned in the novel series be became friends with the sec-def because they meet in a Otaku conference. He often buys otaku things for the sec-def as a request from him since due to his high position he cannot be seen out in public exposing his otaku life.

I have a friend who is super lazy but also extremely intelligent. Probably the smartest in our group. But he's so fucking lazy and depressing that we're convinced he has an aura debuff that sucks out all the energy in a room ad makes you just want to lay down and sleep. Eveytime we go to his house, all we want to do is either sleep, eat or play games.
But he's like this. He will find the most efficient way to do things to maximize his time to just slack around. He was assigned to a government position and the work in his desk piled up everyday was supposed to take an entire day. He found a way to do it in under 2 hours, and then just rest or go out of office for the next 6 hours or more. He basically just clocks in, does his work in 2 hours, leaves thr office, goes out to the mall and just play Tekken in the Arcade or watch a movie in theatre, go back to the office to clock out. Sometimes he does other things, like go home and play games on his PC (like that one time when Dragon Age Inquisition came out and he wanted to play it all the time).
Edit: I'd like to mention he didn't do well in school tho. Not because he was dumb. But because he was just lazy for things like that. Eventually decided the diploma wasn't actually worth the trouble. His brain operates in a pros and cons kind of thing, and when given a task, he will find the best way to achieve desired results without having to deal with everything in-between that completely was unncessary and ultimately considered a waste of time (it can be as simple as stocking the exact amount of paper in a printer beforehand so he doesn't have to gather up the extra unused paper and return it to a drawer).
Itami is the guy who does bare minimum to pass, but when he is actually needed, he goes full super saiyan. I mean, if he was ambitious, he would be dangerous.
He's lazy and he's STILL dangerous.

I have known IRL officers like Itami, who were dead last in training yet excelled in the field. Itami would not be out of place amongst those people.

Although I don't blame her for getting fooled-- I have a couple of drinking buddies what happen to be combat elite-types, one of them is a Ranger and was attached to Delta (dunno if it was his unit or if was him alone, didn't bother getting the details), and by the way he acts off-duty, you would think he's a slightly largish gaming nerd (dude always wears loose clothes and hunches over when hanging with civvies).
Gamer-ranger once got into a shouting match in the infirmary when he was out of uniform and some corporal chick tried giving him the business until she was made aware that he was (1. a Sargent and (2. a Ranger and she pretty much had the same reaction as Kuribayashi because his gamer-nerd ass destroyed her world-view and she nearly shit herself because she thought she was gonna get court-martialed (she didn't put her hands on him, though, so it was just a shouting match).
Didn't hear that story from him, though, but from his battle-buddy who went out for drinks with us a few months ago, gamer-ranger didn't like bragging, which only encourage battle-buddy, especially after a few rounds.
I always just loved the reaction of his subordinate.

There's one challenge where the General made both team fight against each other until they surrender. Any methods are acceptable. Itami quickly took hostage of said general and threatened the opposing teams to surrender or he's going to pluck all of his hairs from his nearly bald head. Itami won and of course the general hold a grudge against him.
Fastforward to the ranger award ceremony, the general realized Itami doesn't have the airborne (paratrooper) badge.
"You can't have the ranger badge without an airborne badge. Lucky for you I have signed you up for that. Chrismas? New Year? You will get no holidays until you get that badge, even on weekends."

He should train as an scout ranger too. Like the Filipino guys(they excel at it since their battlefield is the jungle) Those guys are specialized in stealth. He should train for it too.
Nah if he ends up in S that's modeled literally after a Tier 1 and 2 Special Forces groups it's safe to say that he also knows how to train in jungle warfare and hell even irregular and unconventional warfares

A lot of soldiers from elite units are the cream of the crop and highly recompensed by their commanding officers to get there. In addition. they have powerful iron clad wills to match. What makes this hilarious, he seems his has the knack for it but was just lazy and pissed every CO he had to become a highly trained solider. I guess with his strong will, he is a die hard otaku that barely edges out his training. With that being said, he does seem to be a die hard otaku anymore and I think it would be funny of him in the series to always constantly reading or watching something since he would be missing a lot being off world. Maybe he is actually living one of the dreams of an otaku, being isekai-ed, so those fictions dont seem cool anymore.

I like how in the show makes a big deal about his American Ranger qualifications, and him being part of a special forces group modeled after American SF groups, but then like two episodes later the show completely clowns on American special forces literally forces them to admit that they are "completely outclassed" by the JSDF special forces.
I mean they were also expecting them to send SF teams for them, so it gives you an edge to know that someone is coming.
I mean in war intelligence is the most valuable resource, and well they had the advantage, since they could force the other party's hand, and make them scramble teams to make use of a window of opportunity to capture people from the other world.
I would mostly say that in the tactical context given it was a race against time, and people tend to be sloppy under pressure, usually Special Forces train for a mission, and I am pretty sure that the teams they sent weren't really given the chance to prepare like they would have preferred, and it was obvious to the people in the JSDF that other countries would send teams, so they had the ability to prepare.

The Americans, didn't say they weren't as prepared, or make any mention of how little prep or how disadvantageous the situation was, because the Anime wasn't shitting on prep time. It's a jingoist propaganda piece and was saying that JSDF SF have training and skill so superior to America (and simultaneously China and Russia) that The Americans say shit like, "We've never faced anyone this good before EVER!"
It was the anime's way of trying to say, "My country is better at this than your country." THAT's why it's ironic that they're making a big deal of Itachi's Ranger training and American SF classification. "Haha, even lazy otaku can qualify for panty dropping Ranger and SF qualifications!" And then two episodes later, "Ranger and American Delta Force are inferior to our Japanese devotion and national superiority!"
To be fair, it was multiple spec ops teams from several countries in the heart of another country's home turf, with their intel compromised, and a battle demigoddess that was literally impervious to injury.
The thing people have to understand about Special Operations units, is that most of the training doesn't go in to making them more powerful fighters. It goes in to making them better at operating without support and infiltrating deep into contested territory. You're trained up to resist the unpleasantness of not having a nice bed under your back every night. You're trained to make your limited ammo last longer. You're trained to endure far longer, and far more intense conditions where every other person would effectively 'Eff this shit, I'm going home.'
And it works, because where Special Forces show up, is not where the enemy expects, so they are DEVASTATING. Like a fox in a hen house... If that fox was trained to avoid alerting the guard dog and use wire cutters on the chicken wire. But if a regular force makes contact with a special forces unit, the immediate thing you see from the special forces unit is an attempt to make a big noise, then break contact to escape getting steamrolled. No matter how skilled their marksmanship, no matter how badass their endurance skills, no special forces unit can survive a hail of bullets, or getting pinned down by a fire team radioing in artillery coordinates.
The groups encountering each other and getting mulched were on equal footing. But between home turf advantage, intel the other teams were coming, and a 960 year old near indestructible drunken murder-loli who just got blue-balled coming out to play... Yes. Yes they were very out classed.

That said, my response to the rest is, "You're wrong." The Americans bitching happens before they encounter Rory or the other two foreign countries. They are engaging Japanese Special Forces, and hiding from them. Then, they call in a special political favor to call the JSDF off. The JSDF backs off, but the show pulls a gotcha, and reveals that the JSDF have actually been engaging three spec ops teams simultaneously, and it's only after they back off that the various foreign agents run face first into each other, and each is surprised to learn the other is even there. THAT'S how elite the JSDF silenced shooters were. Big ol national pride hard on time.

I was assigned to a SF unit back in Afghanistan. Before I continue, that doesn't mean I'm SF. I never went through their training. I will never be as cool as SF or rangers. I was only apart of their S2. Itami is is your run of the mill SF operator. This is pretty tame compared to more extreme cases. Plus, he's got nothing on tankers. An Abrams is a mobile armored basement
He's mastered the art of doing just enough to get the job done, regardless of the job. Basically a trait most SF operators have done, they do the job and try to keep their heads down, attracting attention in the military is generally never a good thing, it tends to land you with more work.

As far as the US goes. I met a few guys who enlisted and ended up in the same position Itami did(not for the same reasons). I get the cold-hearted and efficient demeaner they're supposed to give off but at the end of the day they're people with a specific skillset and thought process who, like everybody else, want to go back to their loved ones. I would be a lot more afraid of someone who's objective is to get back home at the end of the day than someone who's objective is to kill someone.
