Mine is 32 years old and been serviced a number of times. I'm on my third band. These bands stretch. I wear it every day and am hard on it. 3.5sec/day and I never plan on selling it. Nice work on this watch!!!
@@Dan84888 Since Automatic watch are entirely mechanical, there is always a certain give +3.5sec/day means that over the course of 24 hours the time would be 3.5 seconds too fast (compared to Exact time) -2.0/sec would meaby your watch beat 2 sec per 24hr slower so you would loose 2 sec per day if you were never to set it with the crown
The reality of that movement running for 30 years without a service is a testament to how reliable Rolex’s old calibers were. It’s no wonder why Rolex now states your movement doesn’t need a service until 10 years. Anyways, it’s always nice to see the king of Rolex watches, the President daydate.
Thanks for dropping by! I guess it also helps if the watch is not a heavily used daily beater. I have seen pristine 10yr Rolex safe queens without needing anything other than new lubrication applied. Yes that President is a grail watch for many people.
This exact watch is what got me into the hobby about 25 years ago when i was just a teen! To this day its still my favorite watch ever made. One day i will own one!
Just had mine serviced. About 45 years old but serviced several times. I did not want it polished as the gold has become so deep and is really not badly scratched. Did get a new crystal. Running absolutely perfectly.
Nice video. This is my grail watch - finally traded up to one made in 1995. Sadly it only comes out of the safe on special occasions. Lovely to see one being cared for so dilligently.
A Rolex watch needs no introduction, and the movement to change the day and date precisely at 12 o'clock in the morning is amazing. Its maintenance was in good hands and deserves thanks
beautiful. to think that ANYTHING, much less something mechanical can be used every day for 30 years and remain functional and elegant is a testament to quality. anyone who questions why rolexes cost what they do should watch this video.
Just want to give you respect and kudos for holding onto a timepiece that long. In our online wristwatch community, folks often part with watches and move onto something else.
I’m not a huge Rolex fan, although I do love the GMT Master II and the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date. Both are classics. I’m much more of an Omega man myself though. My first was a Seamaster 300M chronometer that I bought new in 2001. I’ve always been extremely careful with it, and haven’t worn it every day, but I only first had it serviced in 2020, and it was honestly still working pretty much fine just before I did. But as with anything like that, small rubber gaskets and parts should be replaced periodically, and other parts lubricated. But it’s amazing how timeless (no pun intended) well-made mechanical watches can be. If taken care of and maintained, they practically last forever. Unlike say an Apple Watch or a Garmin, that are based on software, technology, and have internal rechargeable batteries that are difficult to replace. Eventually those types don’t get firmware updates anymore, and just stop working. Much more disposable over time. Even if “time” is 10-15 years.
Agree with you. But now some cheaper Swiss are not so serviceable. With Swatch sistem51/swissmatic tissot, movement replacements are the name of the game. They will keep working, until swatch no longer supports them. Plastic escapement parts do wear out pretty quickly.
Hey there, just a lovely video! Do you know if the crown of the 18238 is gold plated instead of full gold? I've overheard this by an AD during a service for this model and was quite baffled 😅
I never cut one open before, it is solid, but I am not sure about the thickness of the gold. For sure, none has every had plating exposed as far as I observe, no matter how hard it's been polished
@@awatchdiary Little update: I've got my crown replaced and was able to take the old one with me. What the AD meant was that the outer crown is gold while the inner thread is a different material (he said some very specific name that I can't recall 😅). The new crown on the other hand is completely made of gold.
This is my all time favorite watch. I noticed you displayed the band flex, could you show what is good bad and ugly about these bands. since if I ever have the opportunity to purchase it would be from used market.
These president bracelets are pretty amazing with the hidden clasp. It forms an comfortable golden, unbroken band around your wrist together with that reassuring heft. I don't know what bad to say about it, honestly. I think its simply Marvelous.
Just recently acquired a 1985 for my approaching 40th. Watch was running, despite being "bone dry" according to the watchmaker who serviced it. After service? Running half a second fast per day 🤯

Excuse my ignorance I'm just learning about Rolex watches what exactly do you mean 3.5sec/ day ? Sorry if it's a silly question

How do I get my President serviced like that?
The first place to try would be your local Rolex Center. They do have trained watch service techs.

How much longer that bracelet gonna last y'all think?
