I'm happy to know, I'm probably going to redo my own owned 3DSes soon, making this video inspired me to do so!

Great video. I pray the nintendont overloads know that all this was done legally and of course none of this is against tos, nor condones piracy and no roms are supplied or implied right ?

Today was the day I started looking over my shoulder every time I boot a Nintendo game. That and lighting every dark corners of my home, one never knows who's lurking in there. 😅

YES! YES! YES! This device is just amazing. I owned and modded 7 in my life time. 4 for my family and friends. before yes it so horrible to mod the process was tedious but if you have "new" model they are so easy now. i say it takes around 30-45 minuets for both types of 3ds variants (new vs old models). But is easy when following the guides. Although the old models NEED a computer now and day its definitely worth doing. Paying for someone to do it is not something i recommend unless you don't have the thing that are needed to mod. Either way once you have it modded its just peak gaming on the go (along with the PS Vita) you can emulate so much even PS1 game and virtual boy games. the community is big and can get help with a lot of stuff if things go wrong. i tried recreating the fire emblem new 3ds xl with a white shell and black buttons. it looks so clean with the usb c mod i did to it. i take it everywhere i go and its just a staple to my game rotation.

Ahh dang, thanks for the added context especially on how lengthy the process can be, I guess it still is a bit time consuming still then. But wait... USB-C mod you said?!? Ohhh I need to start Google'ing now, thanks for mentioning this!

@to be honest the process is shorter just factoring in updates and downloading some applications from universal updater and games from the 3ds. When you know what you’re doing it’s so much faster could be like 10 mins 😅. But YES USB C… I recommend the mod kit from “The giltesa's shop” because it lets you hold on to the charging dock capabilities. But of course it requires soldering and a bit of shell modifications with a Dremel or file but it’s definitely worth it.

Ouf, that one must sting. I wanted to invest a good amount of cash when Meta was down a little over a year ago, my financial advisor said it wasn't wise.... T-T

I had a Pikachu 3DS XL which I had saved up months for and was very lucky to find. Now just memories remain. Btw, I hope this video stays up. The N has been on a bloody crusade lately. :(

I considered buying a New 3DS XL but there weren't any games I was interested in.
I only would've played my NDS games anyway on that thing (and some emulation). But the bigger screens were interesting.

You're probably going to ask me to turn in my gamer card; but, I've never owned a 3DS or a Switch. My last Nintendo console was a DS Lite. Yep. The same reason I've never owned either of them is the same reason I've never owned a Vita... the Sony PSP.
The PSP, especially the 3000, was such a nice console with such a huge catalog of good games and mature custom firmware that I kept playing it well into the smartphone era, until I finally started doing emulation on my smartphone. My first emulator was, you guessed it, PPSSPP.
I never really felt like I missed out on much until recently when some of the retro handheld reviewers I frequent started doing emulation showcases of the best 3DS, Vita, and Switch games. Then I started feeling like I'd missed out. A little bit, anyways.
I've tried Vita and 3DS games in emulators. Vita games don't feel especially special. They're nice; but, conventional. A real Vita is most certainly better than emulation at the moment for me because my best phone is at the bare minimum of what Vita 3K's devs recommend, and that emulator is fully compatible with only half the Vita library. However, once I get a better phone or handheld and Vita 3K gets some upgrades then, well, you know. 3DS is different though...
They're different because of the hardware and the so called gimmicks. You can't fully replicate that experience on a phone or a fancy emulation handheld. I've tried. I'm not a JRPG guy at all; but, there's enough other content on the platform to make it interesting. That's why, despite the high price, I'm tempted by what RedFlag is offering here. It's not that I can't do the work myself to hack a 3DS. It's just like how I could remove my own tonsils if I had to; but, once you factor in the time, horrible pain, and cost of supplies it's not that much more expensive to have a professional do it right.
The two things that are keeping me from throwing caution and my entertainment budget to the wind are: 1) I could buy a very nice Android emulation handheld for the same money, like the super sleek and powerful AYANEO that Klef recently reviewed which can play everything else I care about perfectly; and, 2) I'm expecting (hoping) that the bottom will fall out of the Switch 1 games and accessories market with the debut of the Switch 2. They say it's "coming soon". There might never be a better time for me to finally get into the original Switch than 2025.
People sometimes ask me why I write long comments. Am I crazy or just a self indulgent weiner? Yes. Sometimes, maybe. Oftentimes, however, I start writing them for other people and part way through I switch to writing them more for myself in order to get my thoughts on a particular subject organized. In this case; do I really want to spend multiple hundreds of dollars on a professionally refurbished and hacked 3DS that's endorsed by one of the nicest guys in the gaming community? Yes, kinda. But, also, no.

1st off, where's your gamer card? It is revoked until further notice! 😂
I had a couple PSPs and one in particular that I found one day after waking up laying on the floor with the screen cracked, to this day I never found out who did that but I had a hunch. Another one that I left in my bag in the metro, I still have another one in boxes but had done shell swaps and it didn't age gracefully, dust would set in... Anyway.
Vita to me was the blueprint idea for the Switch, a handheld that gaps living room consoles with a handheld, the games *mostly* were no different but it was cool at the time to take on the go. The 3DS, as you pointed out, created so many unique experiences and with unique capabilities such as 3D (I still love it so much).
Lastly, keep the long comments coming, they are greatly appreciated here. I love to get a glimpse of your thought process, they're always brilliantly presented and with quality entertainment too, who wouldn't love that?!? Cheers Matt

Thanks Mr. Wolf! I had a blast making that video, it's not everyday that I get to talk about past tech that left an impression on me, seeing as I usually focus on what's recently released, or to come.
