The reason why the kiss on the hand scene was significant there was because that was where Eren learned the truth of everything. That moment where Eren made contact with the royal blooded Historia was when he witnessed all of the future he allowed himself to see. He did not witness his father killing the royal family. He witnessed his future self force his father to kill the royal family. If you look back at the scene in Season 3, it will be quite the mind fuck knowing the full context. Rewatching is as much of a rollercoaster of emotions as watching for the first time.

Since Grisha can only see what Eren allows him to see, that moment of reconciliation between Grisha and Zeke is only possible because of Eren. I like to think that despite all the terrible things Eren has done/will do, this is a small gift of kindness for his father and brother.

And here's how the magic happens. Grisha doesn't see Zeke. Eren sees Zeke (note where Eren is standing.) Then he sends THAT memory back to Zeke. From the look on Eren's face this first time it might have been an accident but not after this!
Zeke and Eren aren't creating some alternate time stream. Eren is just choosing which of EREN's memories Grisha gets.
    24:01
"I'm so sure this didn't happen in episode one."
This DID happen 1x01! Even thought it was a different animation studio, showing the scene from a different angle. In 1x01 you can't see Grisha's face but can tell where he's looking from the position of his body. OFC you wouldn't notice on the first watch because you have no reason to wonder where Grisha is looking.
Grisha went to the chapel the 2nd time because Eren sent him EREN'S memories of what was going on at Shiganshima. Carefully selected memories. He wouldn't be trying to save his wife if he knew his wife was already dead.

Yes, I think it could have been a bit clearer that it was always like this, but on the other hand this made me second guess some stuff. I had to warm up to the idea of predestination, but in the end it was really interesting as it was mainly used for character building. =)

The reason Grisha went to the Founder directly after what Eren had said at the table is because Future Eren was testing something. Eren sent parts of his memories to Grisha about the wall getting attacked that day, prompting Grisha to rush over to the Founder. Eren realized he could do this when Grisha first seen Zeke in the basement, and had to test it. Granted Eren already had an idea he could do that because he seen his own future memories through Grisha's memories, but this confirmed to him how to do it.
Eren using Kruger's words on Grisha was a nice touch.

I think Zeke is a slave to salvation. He desires to save eldians through euthanasiation, so they don’t suffer in this cruel world. Also he wishes to save the world from the titans and the endless cycle of hatered. And of course, he wants to save Eren from Grisha, as he belives that Eren is delusional or brainwashed. Almost every time when Zeke speaks, the main leitmotiv is Salvation. Even through Elena’s eyes, he is a God, a Savior. Also a bit of a stretch, but his father’s figure name is Ksavier (Savior), but his true father’s name is Grisha (in russian Greshnik means Sinner)

To think this was prepared since the begenning of the show. This episode was a peace of art. Just the reveals, the fact Eren is now scary and was the one who influenced his father, where we thought it was the reverse, the character developpment, the music and emotions. Everything in this episode was so perfectly done. It's shame they didn't adapted the real Carla position in episode 1. And this is not the end. The next episode is as good as this one. In term of writing, i really think we are at the peak of the show. Eren's quote is everything about his character. Rather than letting people steal his freedom, he'll steal theirs first. What a line ! And this why he is slave to his fate, he can't go against his own nature. Like he said, he was born like that.

People keep saying that to me, but it does not work in my opinion. It undermines his whole character and is never explicitly shown. I get the sentiment that it would preserve the view of him as a tragic hero, but that is not what he is. I do think it is an interpretation that might be fun to look into and steelman it one day, but to me reading it as using the destiny thing as an excuse to do his horrid stuff because he can always say "but no, I could not change it" is a lot more interesting. I take him laughing at Sasha as llaughing at himself for becoming such a monster. After all, the child is still in there somewhere... =( But yeah, I do think it is an interpretation one could make, just not the most interesting one for me =)

A thing to understand this entire episode is that there is not "actual" time traveling happening not like in the "usual" way at least. These are all memories. The reason why Griesha can sometimes see Zeke is because of the Attack Titans power - getting a glimpse of the memories of it's future inheritors - Eren. Grisha sees Zeke because Eren is looking at him 10:17, also same as in this scene 42:05 look where Eren is standing, that's how Grisha can actually "see" Zeke. For Eren this just happens now but for Grisha this is a memory of an inheritor of the Attack Titan which is Eren. Grisha sees Zeke because Eren sees Zeke there. Same when Eren "talks" to Grisha gaslighting him to kill the Reiss family and take the Founder. He is not physically there - it's a memory from the Future.
One thing to remember is everything that has happened - has happened and will not change. Everything that will happen - will happen and will not change.

Worth mentioning that AoT actually flags its predeterminism in its very first episode, both in the title, "to you, 2000 years from now", and in its very first scene when Eren has a precognitive vision before ever receiving the Attack Titan.
If AoT's world was not predetermined, the entire idea of there being a specific individual - a "you" - to whom anyone could deliver a message is incoherent, and, seeing as Eren's vision in that meadow also happens exactly as he sees it, the story establishes that nothing in the story can or will deviate from whatever is revealed in such visions.
This is important because it means Eren's highest order goal, freedom, is metaphysically impossible in this world, and that because Eren knows this after kissing Historia's hand, he's deadlocked into a complete dystopian headspace, torn between his nature as a slave to a childishly impossible ideal and knowledge of the terrifying yet inescapable future results of that very nature.
Also, I wouldn't say this is time-travel. The entire point is that if we go by hard determinism, it's easier to think of reality less like a movie-reel that spins over time, and more like a flat 2D image of a map. The "future" is no different than the past or the present, in that since everything is determined completely, it might as well count as already having happened. IE, the future is just another part of the map, not a part the video-reel will eventually get to. The future "has already happened", and it happened the moment "time began". The Attack Titan allows those who has it to see pieces of the future through the eyes of future inheritors because "the future has already happened", hence no "travelling" is actually happening.

Basically when Eren kissed Historia's hand he saw his future memories on his dad's past memories, so that's the reason why he changed after that scene. He knew what he needed to do, since basically it created a loop of testing and failing looking for the best outcome. When Eren saw the future memories on his dad's past memories he knew he needed to get in the coordinate with zeke in order for him to send himself and Eren to the past, that's the only reason why Eren could actually influence his dad on the past on taking the Founding Titan. Eren and zeke are not in front of Grisha physically, it's only a representation of his future memories showing in his present.

31:05 I think answering at this point won't be a spoiler...the attack titan isn't the reason why eren is like this, eren is the reason why the attack titan is like this. That's why kruger knew to save a certain mikasa and armin even if he didn't know who they were and that's why grisha knew when eren as a kid was talking about freedom that that's the day he needs to get the founding titan. And that the walls will be breached.
Other titans have past memories, but the attack titan has past and some future memories, hence they all keep moving forward cos of what they see ahead, and somehow, eren is convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt that he is free and nobody elses memories, past or future are influencing him. and so confident of everything he does. At this point you should be able to guess that eren may be the last attack titan.

I think Zeke is a slave to family or maybe even validation. He didn't adopt Kvsavier's ideology, he presented it to Kvsavier who then validated his idea because of his own experiences. So now he is seeking validation from Eren and validation from the world by becoming the "hero" that saves it.

38:32 It's one of those twists that I couldn't grasp the first time I saw this and therefore I wasn't really a fan of. The concept of causality loops and grandfather paradoxes. Maybe because I've been used to the concept of alternate timelines and multiverses from the MCU that going back to a set past and predetermined future is hard to me to accept again.

There is another way that works, but changing the universe with timetravel has huge philosophical implications and they never come up when it is used, so I kinda really like predestination. Mechanic wise it is done really well here as well, I was pretty glad to see no logical errrors. It could have been a bit more explicit in the end that Eren used it as an excuse to do all the horrid shit, because I think initially I took a long time that he was just like "yeah, I did try to fight it like once, but whateves, guess ther is no chioce but to rumble" :D But from the mechanics, it now def joined the other two. =)

From my understanding, you are right, and Eren is literally a slave to destiny. He can't change anything. The future he sees is linear and static. If he tries to change something, he's just putting into motion the events that led to the future he already saw. When Sasha died, Eren was laughing not because he thought it was funny but because he realized all the destruction he saw in the future was already set in stone and there was nothing he could do to stop it.

    • @storieswithstyle
      @storieswithstyle  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Though I agree he can not change it, I think he chooses not to as well. @@amampathak To me the interesting hting is the question of Erens hate: is it nature or nurture? I think that is the crux. if it is inherent in him, he is to blame. @@Ryutsukiffe I don’t think Eren was saying “it’s your fault, you can’t escape it.” What he’s really telling him is that he shouldn’t just grovel and let all the injustices done to him be in vain. Since Eren experienced Grisha’s traumatic backstory in Marley first hand as shown in the last few episodes of S3, he shares the same genuine rage that Grisha felt, and he lets us all know in this pivotal plot twist that he never forgot about all of that bs his dad went through. So Eren isn’t really lying (gaslighting) to his dad at all in this plot twist.

And I'm talking about the visual novel here.
The anime is absolutely fantastic and it still can't even come close to comparing to the VN (the anime also lacks the alternative endings, of which there are around 5 if I remember correctly).

True story; this is the last episode of Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2 that I have watched, as of now. The last episode I ever watched with my ex wife and her mother. Something we did from season 1 onwards, as episodes aired, for a decade. The show outlasted the entire marriage. This is the episode we ended on as a “family.” Now as a manga reader, I knew everything that happened, but still cherished the show, and the tradition. I couldn’t bear to continue it alone. But, as a happier note to the tale, we did reconcile enough that the two of us watched the Season 4 Part 3 film, together. Briefly rekindling the tradition, one final time; before selling our home and ending our cohabitation, forever.
