“The crazy thing is this story began with the lie that mankind had been wiped out and that Paradis was all that remained of humanity. After 3 seasons we found out that was false. But now, at the end of the series, Eren is trying to make that lie into a reality. The most horrific thing imaginable for a young Eren, a world destroyed by Titans, is now what he's bringing about. The boy who was once on the side of humanity against Titans, is now leading Titans to destroy humanity.” - MarkHogan994
Can’t take credit for it but one of my favourite comments ever
Eren was the one sweard to fight 進擊の巨人. Now he is the 進擊の巨人.
Brilliant
"Because she loved him?" you are the only reactor (besides Filmbuff) who thought of that idea
Filmbuff is insane
Filmbuff is the absolute top AoT reactor, and it's not even close.
@@TheAngryMontage filmbuff spends hours theorizing lol
@@PicardRiker08 Filmbuff is peak reactor. I have no idea how he is able to pick up on so many things with just one watch.
@@daniaaal It's obvious. Because most people don't pay attention or pick up on the clearly obvious story telling devices
The Curse of the Founder in which they can only live for 13 years is because none can surpass the founder. They can only live with the power of titans for as long as she lived with the power.
I agree with you here
i really appreciate how you interpreted the "relationship" between King Fritz and Ymir, i think youre absolutely right that she was brainwashed/groomed by the king into a kind of Stockholm Syndrome love.
I agree with you here l fell şad for yimi and her kids to 😢
Some have also theorized that the moment Ymir touched that "something", when we saw that giant yellow flash in the shape of a tree, that was her being COMBINED with a tree-- and if that's the origin of Titans, it would explain their size, their bodies' lighter weight-density compared to humans, and their photosensitivity.
Oh wow that's awesome and makes a lots of sense
18:35 we see the big tree fall over, she didn't combine with it.
The flash just represents the paths tree which would appear later.
In the bluray they changed the flash to have no branches, because the paths tree has no branches yet.
The worm is a Macguffin
@@loganshalloe5927 and what if she didn't combine with the whole tree but just a small part of it, which would explain why we see the tree fall over?
Also, all Subjects of Ymir are connected because she **IS** the progenitor of all of them. When Maria, Rose and Sina first ate her body, we flashed back to Ymir and saw a tree of light sprout up with only three huge branches. Later, the branches were innumerable, and it's been 2000 years, with Marley mentioning some conquered people may have even been "forced to bear children"-- so everyone who can become a Titan is at least distantly connected to Ymir, and the Royal Line is just the one that's been kept closest to Fritz and Ymir's original family via the usual historical royal line preservation methods (eg. intermarrying etc).
To be honest, I never understood the whole royal blood thing... Zeke is the son of a royal mother and a non-royal father, but his powers don't seem to be "watered down". And everyone expects Histora's children to have the same royal powers, even if her husband is a common Eldian. We have to remember that royal blood is not biological different, it's all a quistion of who Ymir perceives as royalty. So how can there be royal and non-royal Eldians, if they are all directly descended from M,R&S and thereby King Fritz?
@@simon_lukas Some may say is a weak excuse but i think its same as the dominant and recessive genes.
You have some people who are a "match" for the royal blood or some people of royal blood who have a recessive royal gene.
@@simon_lukasWe actually have no evidence that Zeke _isn’t_ watered down in his capabilities, only that he has them. We literally don’t have a “pure-blooded” royal non-founder titan shifter to compare him to. So you already messed up with your initial assumption.
@purpleemerald5299 That's why I wrote Zeke's powers don't "seem to be" watered down. All the Marleyans are blown away by his abilities and he himself is very sure of his special powers and his status as a royal all the way to the end. We have no real indication that his power pales in comparison to the royal shifters of old (exept of course the island-king Fritz creating millions of colossals, but he had the power of the Founder).
If we compare the royals to the other titan related special bloodline in the story, the Ackermans, we see little to no loss of their special ability from Kenny to the next generation of Levi. At the end of the day I just think it's odd that a series, that went for such a complex and - dare I say - scientific feel, relys on the viewers to make sense of such an important plot point.
My head-cannon is that a Founding Titan shifter used the Founding Titan’s powers to make all Eldians except for their own descendants to be unable to commune with Ymir, thereby making the Founding Titan useless for other Eldians. Then they could declare themselves royal.
43:00 Armin said that Eren can protect the island with the Rumbling. But the plan was to use A SMALL part, using only a few titans to destroy the alliance (thats why he said "we won"). But now he realized that Eren is using all the wall titans.
I agree with you here my friend
Also, the “alliance” refers to their combined armies and fleet gathering in Marley. The show wasn’t very specific about this until a flashback in Part 3 (for some retarded fucking reason), so I can’t fault anyone for misconstruing that.
@@purpleemerald5299 it was clearly stated in 4x10 by kiyomi and in 4x11 by magath
and again in 4x28 it was literally spoken by the commander (all before part 3)
@@TheAngryMontage I never said they never talked about it. I said they were never very specific about it until Part 3.
Quote another time they specifically described a united fleet of ships gathering directly at Paradis’s doorstep to be destroyed in one-fell swoop with a test rumbling as part of Zeke’s plan that was kickstarted by him helping the Tybur’s create the alliance.
@@purpleemerald5299 idk about that but I thought it was pretty obvious
"I'm going to exterminate all of humanity outside the walls."
"Well, that's kind of a dumb solution."
You sir, are absolutely based.
well one wud think it's dumb, bcoz one doesn't understand the problem from the viewpoint of the person who's trying to solve something...
misinterpret the problem...yes, it'd seem dumb alright
@@scubed9227 the problem is not misinterpreted.
when a "solution" to a problem is not really a solution but a
"stained clean slate" .. which funny enough will not really solve anything (because in years to come war will happen yet again.. and after that what do you know?.. another population will be at the hands of extermination or what not)
this type of solution is not considered a "great" or a "smart" solution. and it leans more to be a "dumb" one and a "selfish" one.
if anything you just wiped out all our history.. ethnicities.. most of humanity.. their personal histories.. tech.. lot of animal species.. massive amounts of knowledge.. etc..
basically the only way to feel that that is not a dumb solution is if you don't care about any of that and you only care about the islands fate (basically saying screw all the world outside the walls just because i'm not emotionally attached to them as i do with the island) . which makes the decision overall dumb ( cuz again war will happen there even after the massive so called cleansing. so it makes the all preference thing redundant )
i do think the best way to call it is a selfish solution, from a not so smart person who's head got very
messed up by that power and it's side effects.
cheers
I think where you got confused with the Global Alliance thing is that, yes the global alliance is all the worlds countries allying themselves, but the target of the Global Alliance that was foreseen in their initial plan, was the gathered troops and military might of the global alliance in or around Marley, which was starting to gather for a massive offensive after Willy's declaration of War.
Yeah, that was missing. I kinda deduced it from Armins reaction but that confused the hell out of me after having watched 19-21 xD
@@storieswithstyle To answer your question of where they currently are, they're in the Shiganshina district which had been evacuated (told in 4x11). The original plan of the test rumbling was to only release the titans of Shiganshina's outer walls to crush the Global Alliance which had been converging in Marley.
Some cool facts, when the pig escaped and the slaves pointed at Ymir, there where shown 13 hands pointing at her symbolizing the 13 year curse that sentence titan-shifters to death. Also when she was running from the hunters and fell and saw the flower, the flower had 9 petals, symbolizing the 9 titan shifters/powers.
Btw, Armin probably thought that crushing the global alliance meant destroying the military coalition that Magath said it will happen in 6 months some episodes ago, and rebuilding that military alliance will give around 50 years for the Eldians in Paradis to think another solution to the war.
The creature that gave ymir titan power is the shining Centipede.
According to Norse mythology, the centipede is the arcane liquid “eitr”, the source of life, Ymir, the progenitor of the giant-like beings known as the jötnar, is claimed to have originated from this substance.
The Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish descendants of the word “eitr” refer to poison/venom, mirroring the toxic impact of Titan warfare.
According to the same mythos, the centipede is Nidhogg, a serpentine beast that represents chaos and suffering.
This entity is found in Hvergelmir, a boiling spring located at the roots of Yggdrasil, the cosmic world tree that nourishes the nine realms of Midgard, Vanaheim, Utgard, Nidavellir, Hel, Asgard, Muspelheim, Svartalfheim, and Alfheim (the Nine Titans).
The Poetic Edda further hints that the Norse apocalypse, Ragnarök, will be instigated by Nidhogg’s destruction of Yggdrasil’s primary root system and subsequent escape.
The Shining Centipede reflects the basic beats of Nidhogg’s narrative pattern - it slithers out from under its tree and wreaks eighteen centuries of havoc, before triggering a global hollocaust in the form of the Rumbling.
(from DenOfGeek)
Also on that note, Eren has at this point effectively become Surtr, the fire giant who's flames swept across the world during rangarök.
As a scandinavian, I appreciate AoT's heavy use of norse mythology :)
Bro your expression when King Fritz said “as a reward, I shall give you my seed” is precious😂 I knew we’d get to the topic of plantation
This moment was exactly the point when Eren's fans start to get angry at Isayama bc the hero they have followed since season 1, turned out to be the villain, Isayama is f genius, only Isayama can make a main character from hero to villain
Game of thrones daenerys targaryen was the same.
I think it was telegraphed really well, though :)
Actually, it's not only Isayama who can do that. But he is definitely one of the best who can do this. Top 3 for me.
@@ratthapolsupasopon921 agreed. AOT is a masterpiece.
@@storieswithstyle yes 💯
I always interpret Ymir as a person who took being a slave as her natural state and never considered any other possibilities. Such people, very sadly, exist in our world.
Just my personal theory, I think the reason we see the younger version of Ymir in the paths is because she got stuck in the paths at the moment she contacted the spine thingy. We know time works differently in the paths. So maybe her body that existed afterwards was a reconstructed body that she herself made to exist in the real world. We know when eldians become pure titans they lose their body structure and mind. I mean there is no human inside a pure titan. When they eat a one of the 9 titans then Ymir reconstructs their body from their memories. Maybe that is what she did to herself. When she decided to die her consciousness became one with herself in the paths. But her appearance was the same like it has always been, stuck forever in the moment when she first became a titan.
That's why they don't age when they are mindless ones right?
She grabs the body of when they turned.
@@smeartyke Yes that's what happend to ymir frickles
@@brotato966 I think it's more because time is instant and infinite, so they have access to previous states of themselves, the same way Eren is shown as an adult sometimes and as a kid some others. I think it's a reflection of their mental state (the only moment she's shown as an adult is when she is finally free from the king).
@@ocean037Every damn fucking time, I learn something new from Attack on Titan.
Pure titans do have a human inside. The manga details it more than the anime. The reason the nape is the weak point is because that is where the human is. However the difference between a pure titan and titan shifter is that if you somehow managed to cut the human out of the pure titan, the pure titan will regenerate and reform around the unconscious human. The human inside the pure titan will slowly decay away over time until only the spine, brain and central nervous system remain and when the pure titan eats a shifter these remains regenerate the rest of the body. There are small details of this in the anime that are a lot more subtle. Ymir was a pure titan for 60 years which means she was just a brain, spine and nervous system by the time she ate marcel which is why when she became human again she was nude. Armin and Eren were pure titans for only a short time which is why when they become human again they are still clothed (not enough time passed for the clothes to decay away into nothing).
I think the organism was life perfected, eternal, always surviving and it's cells could live forever. It had no higher order abilities though, till it merged with Ymir. They became something new where the organisms perfect drive for life could be directed with intelligent thought.
20:55 and here we discover that "Subjects of Ymir" and "Eldians" aren't always the same thing
So the difference between Armins plan and Erens plan in our world is: Armin tried to plant a little strategic atom strike to defeat Marley. But Eren is for a whole Atom-Waar to end this whole world. And the last hope Armin and the others had were that Eren would just bluff and defeat Marley with a Mini-Rumbling/a soft knd of Rumbling.
Now would be a good time to double check the title of this episode, the title of S1E1, and the dream Eren has under the tree in that episode right after the opening music crawl...
also the outo of S2
Eren's mind: There will be no more racism if there is no other race left!
The worm-like creature is based on Hallucigenia, a fossil from the Cambrian. I love it because it makes it feel extremely ancient, like one of the first complex lifeforms.
3:42
"show him memories that suited you."
Grisha went to the chapel because he wanted to save his wife and family.
If Eren had showed him memories of his wife being killed and his kids being rescued, he no longer has the personal motivation.
Eren DID show him memories of Shiganshima under titan attack.
They pointed at Ymir because she actually did let the pig escape.
What was the eel thing?
It's not named.
the design is based on Hallucinogenia, a creature from the Cambrian which was really weird even by Cambrian standards.
29:57
Why doesn't Ymir regenerate?
Titan shifter can regenerate. That spear wasn't enough damage to kill her.
BUT
If the shifter doesn't give a shit any more no regeneration takes place. The shifter has to want to live.
(I assume regeneration is the default because it happens automatically if the shifter is unconscious).
31:13
the tree connects all Eldians who are titans or who can be changed into titans.
Her daughters ate her so now the tree has 3 branches.
33:05
13 years because she got killed 13 years after becoming a titan.
Note there were 13 fingers pointed at her for letting the pig escape.
And the flower near the tree had 9 petals.
33:45
How many (titans) did she shape?
All of them. Also, every time a shifter becomes a titan, she makes that titan from scratch.
Every time a titan shifter is injured and heals, or a titan regenerates - Ymir has to take care of that.
Even in a place where no time passes, she keeps busy.
46:32
Dumb plan.
The only thing to say in favor of the plan is that it would work.
It's a ghastly plan. I came up with a better one but Eren's plan would have about a 100% success rate.
The most horrible thing about the world extermination plan is that it makes logical sense if you look at it purely objectively and disregard any moral or humanitarian factors.
Once again another example in this story about how war is utterly fucked because it makes unspekable things logical.
I don't know if Isayama's intention was to make an anti-war story, but it most certanly can be seen as one (with a VERY strong anti-war argument).
You understood Ymir and her backstory so well then spent the rest of the episode being confused about the motives of every single character, which were far easier to understand 😂😭 It's insane how insightful and thickheaded you can be at the same time lmfao Armin and Yelena didn't misunderstand anything, you did...
Nah, after dfinishing everything and reflecting on this reaction, it was mainly due to 1. them not distinguishing between test rumbling and rumbling and 2. I already knew Eren was an evil bast**+ and they did not. Which was in character, but I had a hard time getting back into the "let us hope Eren wants good and is our friend", which in the end indeed proved to not have been the case :D So I was indeed right and not thick headed, it was just that the characters did not know what I did yet, hence the disconnect =)
PLEASE make the "oh no it’s 2 am" mug, PLEASE, I’ll definitely buy it 😂
Love you bro, whenever we see zeke starts to feel guilty or sth, you always say “when is Zeke going to die?” 😂 you already know bro when
timeline branching ? please watch steins:gate, an anime about time travel where they did branching timelines REALLY well
Technically DBZ also has branching timelines, as their time travel method and Trunks made this clear since the beginning, with telling Goku, that he knows he can't change his own timeline and instead wants to create another timeline with an better outcome.
I think branching has the problem, that as long as it isn't the main focus of the story like in Steins Gate, it gets overlooked by the watcher/reader, since it rarely creates problems that the people think and talk about.
Just like in DBZ, no need to really talk about it there, since it's pretty clear how it works and it creates no paradoxes or problems you really need to talk or think about.
Okay your expression again when Fritz asked their daughters to eat their own mother, Ymir; I feel ya bro, King Fritz was beyond saving
Armin though Eren was gonna release the titans in the walls around Shiganshina (what they used to plan as the test Rumbling to threaten Marley). That would probably be enough to deal with Global Alliance which is gathering in Marley (the one that Willy organized). But he released all the titans in the walls which in lore are millions of colossal titans (even tho when you do the math of the walls circumference and how large those sections with a colossal titan it doesn't add up to a million, it's less). He had his doubts that Eren might do this when they were exiting the prison, climbing the stairs going to help Eren but push that doubt to the side.
You are right to point on all the flaws in Eren's thinking and they will be addressed in future episodes, but it fits his character that he would get to this point. He still has that childlike thinking in some ways even tho he matured in other ways.
You good some good questions with Ymir, about why she obeyed the King after getting the power or why would she want to destroy the world. Those will be answered towards the end of the show. But the questions i can answer is. Yes they are all connected because they are all decedents from Ymir, it's been 2000 years. So eventually from Eldian tribe to Eldian Empire over the years her blood spread through Eldia. (But also remember, many other nations have minority of Eldians in their lands). Eldians and Subjects of Ymir in current time are the same thing but it wasn't the case 2000 years ago. And she died because she gave up, remember we learned back in the battle in Liberio that Reiner can heal but he needs the will to live. I love how throughout the show Ymir was portrayed like a god (in Eldians case) or somebody who made a deal with the devil (in Marleyans case) but it turns out she had no will of her own. And the 13 years come as it was said because Ymir lived that long after gaining the power of the titans. She was 10 when she got it, she was 23 when she died.
The creature in the water under the tree is based on Hallucigenia an ancient life form. In the show i also see it as some kind of primal life form deep in the ancient dark waters beneath a tree that looks like the tree of life (Yggdrasil).
And lastly about the Time-travel things, in my understanding it's one fixed timeline that Eren tried few times to diverge but things always ended up as he saw them in his memories. And back when Krugar tells Grisha that the Attack Titan power is to seek freedom, the power actually is the future memories thing (and he influences then through the paths which connect all Eldians throughout time and space) , the seeking freedom is Eren's character's influence over the past inheritors of the Attack Titan. So when Zeke says that he showed them memories which suited him to alter the past. I understand it as the "altering of the past" always happened in this fixed timeline but from his perspective he did it when he entered the paths. So for example Kruger was influenced by this current Eren from the paths before Eren was even born. Just like with your example of going back shooting the baby painter and that always been the case and you have not changed anything after that moment but maybe caused it directly or indirectly. And Eren knows the future only from what his future self showed himself to guide him towards the desired outcome. And you can deduce from that that Eren is the final Attack Titan inheritor.
I think the flowers are just the last thing she has seen as a free human. Not as a titan, not as a slave, not as that mythical figure - just as a person. They represent the humanity she's been clinging on to.
Eren is doing it because in his mind this is the only way he can protect his friends. His time is almost up, technology is advancing to the point they might soon surpass the titans and make the founder obsolete. He's not gonna be able to convince the world to not see his people as threats that need to be eliminated so he goes for the only option he has that can be done within a reasonable amount of time (while he still have the option).
That would have been lovely, but he says in the end were just a pretense for his power trip =(
I think the only way to stop this rumbling is by killling it both Eren and Zeke bc Eren has the founding titan and Zeke has the royal blood, I pray that it will happen soon, it is sad to see the world get destroyed by those fascisst villains
---- spoiler -----
don't worry they were both got beheaded at the end of the season 4, your prayer was answered by God Isayama ....
Not all "Eldians" becomes titans, like the Ackermans, the ones that becomes titans are the descendant from Ymir, called "Subjects of Ymir", since they were a tribe the Eldians conquered territories, with people in there.
If Ackermans are not directly related to Ymir, how can they be reached through the paths? We see the path tree branch off when the three daughters unlock their titan potential... So as far as I understand, the paths only connect the descendants of Ymir.
@@simon_lukas remember Mikasa and Levy are from parents born inside the walls, they have mixed DNA, for example, Mikasa Ackerman is also descendant of the Asumabito
@@alarydavidnin That's true. But mixed DNA means they are still direct descendants of Ymir, just only via one bloodline. If Mikasas father was a "true" Eldian, Ymir is her greatgreat...grandmother, even if her maternal line is from Asumabito.
@@simon_lukas What i mean is that the Ackermans restrain from the King will so, it looks like just for that they dont becomes titans, we will never know, so far no Ackerman went titan mode, even after the gas from the primal life at the final chapter.
@@alarydavidnin Ah yes, you're right. I think it's pretty canon by now, that Ackerman DNA got tinkered with to a point where they won't turn into titans. It's a bit difficult to get the scientific and the straight up mythological aspects of the show in line sometimes. Then again... I always liked the idea of Ymir just taking her off-day in the paths, whenever Eren tried and failed to summon his titan body :D
Seperti yang dikatakan frieda, jika kekuatan besar jatuh kepada orang lemah, maka dunia akan mengalami kehancuran.
Eren lah orang lemah itu
Yeah it is pretty dumb solution😂 I am with you bro, dumb eren lol 😂
Subjects of Ymir are the descendants of Ymir's bloodline. When she became a titan she was all titans in one but did not have the same founding titan powers since those powers only work on subjects of ymir and at that point she was the only one. When she had 3 daughters they did not have titan powers but did have a connection to the paths and the potential to become titans. When ymir dies the 3 daughters eat her body which includes her spine which is where the titan power resides. The titan power split equally into 3 titans which each daughter possessed. 1 of these daughters got the strongest part of the power which would be the founding titan part making that daughter and their descendants the royal bloodline with the other 2 daughters bloodline being normal subjects of ymir. These 3 daughters would then have children passing on ymirs blood and connection to the paths. Assuming each daughter also had 3 kids that consume their mothers spine when she died then all 3 titans would again split into a total of 9 (something about 9 in mythology im not sure, maybe the 9 realms of norse mythology or it could be something else). After those kids had kids they would have repeated the practice only to find that the titan powers were limited to 9 and only one person in each family could inherit the power with the other family members going their own way, eventually there would be millions of subjects of ymir given enough time.
i dont think the series wants to tell us that "in fact the eldians did start it all", more so implying how the Empire Cycle works, because after Ymir got the Titan Powers, we see that Eldia is turning into what Marley at that point already was - an Empire.
Also no, its not Ymir doing the rumbling...
oh and also indeed, all SUBJECTS OF YMIR are related to Ymir. Subjects of Ymir are not all Eldians.
I think the subjects of Ymir thing is really neat, you can see when her 3 daughters eat her remains, that 3 branches are on the tree, and as more and more decedents gain the blood connection, you can see more branches
Honestly i think talking this much during reactions is the problem because most don't have problem understanding this
Back in the Season 3 ending ost, it references a lot of future events most including Ymir's backstory. The scene of the children eating Ymir is also seen here and the S3 Ending ost, so that's some pretty big backstory.
You’re correct with the first version of “time travel”. One fixed timeline
13:21 Oh, interesting. The flower has 9 petals. It's like a vision of the 9 Titans to come.
What a MASSIVE confusion you got there lol. But I loved that. Honestly, no one ever walk that direction-of-thought before. Fresh and juicy reaction I would say.
So, the reason why are all subject of Ymir connected (in my theory when I saw this episode AoT 4x21, ), because every living Eldian in present time ARE all descendant of Ymir.
All Eldian's final root are Founder Ymir and her three daughter(Maria, Rose, Sina), and very few kin who get born with a name of Fritz have an authority to order Founder Ymir through to own a Ymir-hotline, A.K.A. the Founding Titan(because she was a slave to Fritz family for most of her life). Others are, well, ended up with "didn't get born with a silver spoon" kind of situation. You know what I mean.
Anyway, when The source of all living matter(or the Devil of the earth, Origin of Titans, maybe a God) "connect" to Founder Ymir's spine and she got eaten to her daughters 13 years later, she became some kind of hive-mind creature. I hope you didn't miss the scene in this episode that Ymir witness a new-born Coordinate with a three branches, before that, The path didn't even have any connection at all.
The first king Fritz forces to eat her to his child and they consume Ymir's spinal fluid that include a "Titan-power-jelly", The source of all living matter parasited in her descendant and brought their consciousness(or I dare to call, a soul) in a coordinate as well. It never get any thinner, even how they married to other trial and get irrelevant to bloodline through the time has passed over 1,820 years. The source of all living matter's power or Founder Ymir's blood(I can't tell any difference) has influencing Eldian ever since from beginning.
So the coordinate(= the path, the Eldian, the Founding Titan, and Founder Ymir herself) is a super massive and terrifying version of family tree, and also a countless branch of the Ymir's limb and neuron and capillaries. I would say, they are basically a Ymir-Overmind's Zergling. (Sorry about the Starcraft metaphor for who doesn't know about this game, I can't find a better example for this situation because I'm S.Korean.)
Of course, I might be wrong. If you have an other opinion, YOU'RE PROBABLY RIGHT. All of this mumbling of word is just of conclusion to see this amazing show's amazing episode back in 2022.
By the way, hope my english doesn't bother Mr.SWS or you guys who are casually using this language. I'm not very good at English and this is my first long-sized-comment in my life without using any translate program.
p.s. I'll not mention about this episode's title. I'm so tired from type this long comment and other people will do it for me. ;)
The flower Ymir saw while being hunted had 9 petals, and one of them was bloody.
she didnt heal because she lost the will to live, and yeah, everytime some shifter hirts themselves or when pure titans are made, ymir has to build/heal bucket by bucket, for 2000 years
I think the creature is a devil not God
Ymir's original titan is really haunting... If we suppose she molded it herself via future memonies time travel shenanigans, we can deduce quite a bit about her self image: She builds a strong body without a face - no emotions, no identity, no tongue, maybe not even a brain. She really was in a slave state of mind.
I mean he did give her a choice, he said” you’re not a slave, not a god, you’re just a person, it’s your choice!” He literally left it in her hands and she decided to give eren the power soooo….i think maybe you were right and just missed a part of the conversation? Idk😂 also this king is so much more evil than any character in this story in my opinion and no he didnt love his daughters😂stop making excuses for everyone else except for eren also what else should eren do? Let his people be murdred every man woman and child? Is that what you’re saying? Let Marley commit genocide?😅 i dont think you’re giving eren pov a fair chance(look at the world of the anime not the real world for a second). The idea of This story is that everyone is right in their own minds
Ymir choose to die after saving the king, she always could heal but wanted to escape her life. And also yes, she does have to rebuild everything! All the fights, healings, and transformations is her spending hours building
43:22 Nah, he didn't misunderstand. Here's the thing: an army needs somewhere to muster. It's assumed that they are mustering at Marley because it's the geographically closest to the Isle of Paradis; therefore, he thinks it is unnecessary to send out Titans around the world, because you only need enough to attack a relatively local area.
Ymir is the mother of all Eldians. In the path's you see the tree of light grow 3 branches, those are her children and the start of the Eldians we know today. Only one of those branches possessed the royal blood line, the other two are regular Eldians. King Fritz was the king of the Eldian empire. They enslaved her from another group of people. Who knows, she could have even been a Marlean.
I think Ymir was angry that her children had suffered and she burdened them with the power of titans and the worlds hatred. But she was first and foremost loyal to whoever she was closest too. In a fucked up way, that was the king. And in death after all these years, the closest thing to her now is her descendants and so she wants to protect them. Otherwise, she would have let the king take the spear.
"Thats a pretty dumb solution" THANK YOU!
It was unpleasant, though unsurprising, to learn many fans genuinely supported the idea of Rumbling the world to end the cycle of violence. But Erwin says in the first season (paraphrasing) that human beings will continue to fight each other until there's only one person left alive or less. This just shrinks the world, and it creates almost the exact propagandic nightmare that Eren grew up in. It speaks to how stunted he is
I think a lot of people are getting confused. There is a 2 sets of problem introduced in AOT. Problem of Violence. Problem of Titans. Eren, Zeke and King Fritz are trying to solve the Problem of Titans. Their solutions are kill every Eldians or kill everyone besides Eldians. But viewers think they are also solving the problem of violence.
The idea was never end the Cycle of Violence, they knew it was pretty much is impossible. But they wanted to free the Eldians at least from it, but had very different ways of doing that, and none of them were good ideas
In ancient Eldia that was left without enemies, conflicts continued among the Eldians themselves (as Tybur says) so not even genocide is the solution. AOT is an anti-war message
The point wasn’t to solve the cycle of hatred. The point was to survive. That’s it. Eren wanted to ensure Eldia survived for as long as possible without any doubt in his mind.
@@christianmorales8978 Spoiler alert:
And without the titans.
He did all that with ymir and mikasa in mind for the end of titans.
This is the first time Founder Ymir ever stood up against the royal blood (i.e. King Fritz). Her face at 36:05 is the breaking point of that, similar to when Historia first stood up againt her father. Being abused her whole life since childhood, she just wants to be loved by anyone, she does not know how to stand up for herself. It's a reason why victims of abuse keep going back to their abusers. These scenes really hits deep when you're a life long people-pleaser. Also Zeke treats her the same way as the shitty king 2000 years ago. That's why she breaks the 'rule' of royal bloodline and listens to Eren instead. She wants to see this world burn, after understanding that someone will help her do that. Sometimes what actually gets people out of abuse is support and acknowledgement that we are just human who wants to be loved (which Eren successfully does here), even if the whole village (people who are SUPPOSED to care for you) burned you.
44:30 - While the Eldians we saw in Ymir's backstory were just normal humans, every modern Eldian today is a distant relation of Ymir and her daughters. Kind of like how in the real world a huge portion of the world's population is related to Genghis Khan.
You can actually see it in the tree in the paths. When Ymir is in the paths as an adult, there are three branches representing her daughters. When the eldians of today are in the paths, those branches have multipled and split thousands of times, all stemming from Ymir as the trunk.
Some great foreshadowing I saw people point out, 13 fingers pointing at Ymir (How long titan shifters live). 9 pedals on the flower she sees before entering the tree (number of titan shifters). 🤯
that's more easter egg than foreshadowing
The revelation in the last minute was big lol
48:09 ***looks at my clock; it's 2:13 AM*** ***blinks rapidly*** I need that cup.
Eren is collaborating with Founder Ymir. Neither are controlling the other. Supposedly because Ymir is already dead, she can't use the power of titans on her own except to create titans in the Paths. She projects power through the Titan Shifters and grants her Founding Power to the one who inherited it (Eren), even though she could have continued enslaving herself to Zeke (royal blood not under Vow Renouncing War).
Also, Eren did not fully give his powers to Ymir because Eren wants the power to fulfill his own flawed idea of freedom.
Ymir and Eren both wanted freedom. Ymir wanted freedom from her loyalty towards her king. Eren wanted freedom from his pursuing of freedom. They are both slaves. In the end ,mikasa set them free.
I think the breaking free from the chain symbolizes the attack titans ability to go against faith. could be wrong.
the eel thing is a hallucigenia
My theory on Ymir. I like to think that different titans represent parts of Ymir's personality. Where the founding titan with the vow renouncing war represents her unwillingness to fight for herself or her kids and put up with the injustice and unfairness that King Fritz represents. The Attack Titan represents more self preservation, self respect and to fight for those you care about. This part of her is very repressed and almost non existent within her. I believe that the Attack Titan literally is her will to fight for herself and it's only goal it to free Ymir (herself) from her "chains" that keep her in the paths.
On a second note, I think that Eren being conceived by Grisha while carrying the Attack Titan means that he is the Attack Titan in human form. Which would explain his rage as a kid to attack anything that threatens his or his loved ones freedom. Eren then really not being his own person since he is just an extension of Ymir with his main focus to free her at ANY cost. The tragedy of Eren really being was he ever free to begin with if he was just a vessel to be used by the Attack Titan. But I'd like to believe that his family and friends made him more human then he was destined to be.
Ymir is the embodiment of loyalty , bond and power among people. She was tortured by loyalty to her husband. Just like mikasa.
44:41 Yes, it is correct that Ymir isn't necessarily the progenitor of all of them (for all of her children were royal); however, it's probably the case that only those who are genetically close to her are able to inherit the Titan Power by feasting upon the spinal fluid of one of the 9, to be altered by the Founding Titan's power (say, by making them immune to a deadly disease that effects everyone else), or to inherit them randomly when one of the 9 otherwise dies. This was likely discovered by means of a random death, and then the people of Eldia ensured that the original enslaved population of Ymir's village had their genes spread around throughout their empire. Even if it was /just/ because the Founder could mess with their physiology, that is a strong reason to ensure that power can be available to use on everyone in case of emergency.
I guess it *is* possible that the "royal bloodline" only was carried by one of the three daughters, or something along those lines, but I don't know that that's quite correct. It seems like the 9 came about because all three of the daughters' immediate children all ate them once they died, and the number of them totaled 9; therefore, I would think that all 9 of the original 9 Titans were royal in the specific way that means you get more Titan Powers and would be bound by the Vow if this were later in the timeline, and it's just that any of Ymir's village's population and their descendants can theoretically inherit the Titan powers as a result of the Source of the Titan Powers keying them to something specific in Ymir's genes which only they shared. It's just that anyone who is not directly descendant from Founder Ymir gets lesser versions of those powers, as if some of the "titan genes" were turned off, slightly different in them, or otherwise not present in the rest of them.
Did you notice that Grisha was a mix of Beast titan / Attack titan? :o
"it is primal life in a way" bro literally guessed it lol
Linear beings becoming non linear is more the flavor, rather than time travel.
time logic still applies.
But just like how history can "echo" into the future, the future can imprint the past.
This story implies there is no free will, "so you have to be drunk on something" to get that sense of freedom.
16:00 Love this analogy. Reminds me of a similar creature in the DC Universe: the Entity of Will, among other primordial entities of the emotional spectrum in the Green Lantern origins.
44:33 She is the mother of all "Subjects of Ymir" Technically, all Subjects are of royal blood. They are all descendants of Ymir and Fritz. Here, I reckon that we are used to referring to Eldians and Subjects of Ymir interchangeably. But not all Eldians descended from Ymir. And as you've already finished the show, not all Subjects of Ymir are Eldians... Every branch of the Coordinate represents a subject, the first three in the beginning being her daughters.
Why Eldians are connected? Bcs, if you are notice at 31:13 and 31:27, the tree has 3 branch at first. As much as Eldians born from 3 daughter's blood, the branch is being more and more. Tree = path
Killing is justice for Eren who killed 3 when he was 6.
When he was 9, you mean
Yes, probs one of the most important scenes.:)
It was just an undiscovered species imo This was set back in the past, humanity had no scientific knowledge, so it being an undiscovered species is not unrealistic at all. It very likely gave her the power of paths and to create anything from the sand. The reason she acquires titans is because her limited mind could only dream of becoming big so she could escape her terror.
If you're wondering what the creature is, its supposed to represent Nidhogg, a snake-like creature from Norse myth that lives at the root of Yggdrasil and its appearance said to kickstart the event of Ragnarok. But the design creature itself is based on a real prehistoric creature.
AoT is heavy on Norse myth reference
Rumbling signifies Ragnarok
Ymir is Jotun(giant) the progenitor of Giant
I cant know if you remembered later, or if its metioned. But the plan was using the Titans of Shiganshina District to do the Test Rumbling, a small outer fraction of the walls would be enough for it, not taking the entire wall. Armin thought Eren was using Shiganshina District Titans to drove out the Marleyans, not doing the Full Rumbling
I don't know if you learned that already. But the parasite is inspired from the Hallucigenia. It's one of the first living animal on earth, one of our true ancestors. And it symbolize life itself. It's the representation of the life in its primal state, indeed. It was never a god, nor a deman, only life itself, who gave its power to Ymir.
Remember that Ymir has been alone in the paths for MUCH longer than 2000 years because of thw way time dilation works there.
Every single time a person turns into a titan, or a shifter transforms, Ymir spends decades building their titan body in the paths. She has been a slave for an unfathomably long time.
Also Eren is indeed the first person to have ever hugged her in her entire life.
Regarding time travel in stories, the single most horrifying time mechanic I've seen in anything is the attractor fields in Steins Gate, because of what their effect implies.
It is also my theory about how they share memories. The creature's cells have the ability to instantly communicate across distances and experience an infinite amount of time during this communication and that creature spread it's cells into every Eldian child born of the blood line.
The named titans embody some unit of Ymir's will and since they are able to instantly communicate the pieces of the creature can send memories backwards and forwards through time since for the cells every moment is now in the coordinate.
46:31 It is but since you already completed it, it is safe to say it is not even a solution it is eren's own dark desire, his own twisted idea of freedom.
43:00 The plan was using a small rumbling, like only the Wall Titans from Shiganshina, to crush the alliance flleet. The Wall Titans from Shiganshina were absolutely enough, Armin saw the Titans "awakening" and thought "we won" - then he realized Eren made ALL the wall titans walk since he is well - going to destroy everything.
Little fun fact, the alien/creature is based on the halucigenia. A extinct thing which fossils have been found of. On youtube videos about this creature all comment sections are infested with aot jokes.
Can we get the 2 AM line on a mug?
i think bcz ymir was captured when she was a child, she got trauma n fear toward the king. thats why despite having titan power, she still obey the king order.
also the title called "From You, 2000 Years Ago" which is similar to ep.1 "To You, in 2000 Years"
9 titans represent 9 parts of human body
drinking every time you say the F word, thats madness man
This. The whole of Ymir's backstory really satisfies my checklist of good sci-fi.
Taking an element from science, and making a fiction out of it. The worm-like thing is basically inspired from a Cambrian era creature. Since you have already finished the whole thing, I'd just like to point out that the said era is basically a poster child for life and evolution...see Armin and Zeke's version of nature vs nurture argument and the imageries shown as they are talking.
Utilizing a creature from that era, and incorporating the themes pop culture has derived from those imageries, while seamlessly integrating it into basically his own take on the Ragnarok, is just pure genius on Isayama's side.
Regarding the "two ways time travel can work" and how a Destiny Trap removes all free will from the participants, there's a different, more nuanced interpretation of Stable Time Loops in some stories that doesn't "Trap" everyone in destiny quite as hard: And it's if the reason the Stable Time Loop exists at all is if all the participants happen to do WHAT THEY WOULD HAVE DONE if they had a choice, according to their character, even if the effect was retroactive. That if they hadn't truly **wanted** to do the causing action in the future when the critical moment came (like being the devil on Grisha's shoulder in that moment), it wouldn't have retroactively occurred in the first place. Whether you think that applies to Eren in this situation is up to you, though.
Speaking of the devil on Grisha's shoulder-- remember when you were wondering a few episodes what Eren's titan resembled, with its pointed ears and nose and skull-like visage? In retrospect, it was ALWAYS meant to visually resemble THE DEVIL. The one ever rebelling against authority.
25:05 Yeah... pretty much everyone does. One of the few universally reviled characters in the show. Even Gabi and Floch have people who like them, despite how controversial they are. Not him.
I still love to see you keep trashing floch
Well, there is a lot more of that to come 😅
@@storieswithstyle 😆
the drinking game will not be on how many times you say fuck but on how many times you ask why.. everyone is dead 😅
For anime, all openings are 1 minute and 30 seconds. So you can skip ahead 1:30 ahead for any anime.
About, some anime are 1:26, some are 1:35, it depends, but usually yes they are 1:30
Two Ymir both have bond with loyals. Historia is much better than the first king of course. Two Ymir both sacrificed. But the first Ymir has so much pain, she needs mikasa to figure out.
What was that eel thing? It was Jormungandr.
I think there are 3 types of time travel stories:
1.- everything is predetermined, and you can't change the future.
2.- you change the past and therefore the future. But everthing is still only one timeline.
3.- a multiverse story where every change creates a different timeline.
My favorite time travel story is Chrono Trigger a jrpg videogame from the 90's.
Still waiting on a croon trigger remake for ps5, I hope they do it one day. :( such a brilliant game
I wonder if Zeke could have made it so eldians would still have children they would just not be eldian anymore.
BRO KNEW MARIA ROSE SINA EVEN BEFORE THE ACTUAL REVEAL OMG SIR YOU'RE DAMN GENIUS😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I've been watching you talk about stories a lot.. Can I ask you what is your first name? I don't want to call you "storieswithstyle" in my mind.
Malte :D or Malti, both are fine :D
50:30 i totally agree with you, i think the story would have closed in a much better way if that was the case, brilliant thought
My brain theory is we see her as a child in the coordinate because she died that day in the water and what came after was a new thing made of Ymir and the proto life of the creature.
I also think the worm itself is the coordinate space and that place represents the instant and eternal life force/spirit/psychic will of the creatures unique biology and when it bonded with Ymir and formed a new tree of life each Eldian descendent with genetic ties to Ymir is actually just another "cell" on that grand life form living in time and space but also connected for all time infinitely inside the coordinate.
Essentially Eldians are a giant organism with each eldian person as a node and this organism evolved the ability to instantly and eternally communicate internally between reality and this higher dimension and because time is instant and eternal there Ymir could build each titan out of the energy (the sand) of the organism which turns the host into a titan upon command/need in the real time world.
Zeke is in there waiting for his brother for a long long time and I am not sure if he was there from his first death (with Levi) or his second one (when he fell off the wall after being shot). It is possible that zeke was stuck there for the whole last battle after Ymir sent him back when she had the titan put him in it's belly and she rebuilt his body.
PEOPLE IN THE COMMENTS, IM GOING TO TALK ABOUT SPOILERS SO DON"T READ IF YOU HAVN'T FINISHED THE SHOW!
open comment to read...
I saw your community post the other week and saw that you finished the show, so I think it might be ok to say this now.
FIrst, Ymir couldn't heal because she lost the will to live. She loved the King in a fucked up way, similar to Mikasa and Eren's toxic love. When she took the spear to the heart, she saw that the king did not love her back and only saw her as a tool so she lost her will to live. Remember that Falco said Reiner couldn't heal because he had no will to live.
The global alliance was all going to meet at Marley to attack the island, if he used a partial rumbling he could could crush all the armies there, that's why zeke gaslit willy tyber to start the war and get everyone in one spot.
Another thing is that in the AOT universe there are multiple timelines, all of them happened (or have the potential to happen). Eren, with the founder, exists outside of time. He can see all the timelines of every choice ever made and is influencing them to make sure the timeline he wants is reality. So there could have been a billion timelines where Eren didn't get the founder, but the one where Eren DOES get the founder he can see all the futures and with the Attack Titan, he has a direct connection to the past. So he is actively warping the timeline in both directions to accomplish his goal. Eren has multiple goals, Number one freedom. Number two, keep his friends safe, number three (when he was a kid but he still ends up doing it) kill all the titans. But he also has a desire to be with his friends that clashes with his goals. He thinks these goals will make him happy when in reality they only brought him and everyone in the world pain.
The destiny trap thing is actually pretty interesting and not quite the "there is no changing the future" exactly. The story has a lot of the themes, and one of the major ones that has been said has been ,"those who cannot sacrifice everything cannot change anything". It is a moral that is basically saying to change ourselves to make change, specifically speaking about our ideas. Throughout season 4 we see how those who do NOT challenge their own ideas (unlike Gabi, who was willing to change her thinking about the Eldians), will do terrible things. Eren, WHO KNOWS THE FUTURE (HIS FATE) doesn't give up on his idea of "freedom" regardless which is why he ends up doing it. If Eren was willing to sacrifice his dream( like Armin did to defeat the colossal or Erwin to defeat Zeke, or Mikasa sacrificing her goal of keeping Eren safe to save the world and find peace) he would have been able to change his fate of doing the rumbling and end up in the other timeline with Mikasa at the cabin. But he wasn't willing to give up on the idea because Eren is suborn and blind to logic because of his emotions. If we are powerless to change our actions, we are powerless to change our fates.
Isayama is basically saying that unregulated human nature will lead to our destruction, so we must change so that those that come after us have it different. "Get the children out of the forest". At least this is all my understanding. I don't know if I explained my thoughts very well, what do you think?
Konnichiwa. Just to be clear here (coz you're confused) the FUTURE Eren (one Grishia saw) is NOT the Eren talking to Zeke. Eren talking to Zeke is US (viewers) meaning PRESENT Eren... who CLEARLY DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE HAS ALREADY DONE. That's Zeke's being positive in trying to stop Eren, and obviously Eren's trying to fulfil his destiny.
eren's plan to end racism: YOU CANT BE RACIST IF THERE IS ONLY 1 RACE
LMAO
eren knew he'd get there, just not how.
