I mean, there is a lot. I know of japanese live action movies, a japanese live action series and a netflix movie. The netflix movie is infamously bad and the japanese stuff, while decent for live action, still are downgrades with many changes to something where the devil is in the details. Some of the worst changes for me are attempts at making the characters closer to "normal" and "relatable" which fails their entire characterizations point.

It's like L said about Light's reasoning being simple and childish.
What I'm doing is right, therefore I'm Good. They're trying to stop me from doing right, which is wrong, and thus Evil. Therefore they are Evil, and I must destroy Evil, because I am Good.
Simple reasoning, and yet utterly twisted.

I also think a big part of his mentality is something a lot of people fall victim to. Once he knew for sure that the Death Note was real he had already killed two people, he then had a choice in his mind, either accept that he had done something terrible and against the morals he had been brought up to believe and accept the guilt or abscond himself from the guilt by rationalizing his actions as just. People do this a lot, 'I had no choice', 'it's not my fault' etc. We soften the blow to protect our sense of self, the main problem for Light being he is very intelligent. Whilst unintelligent people can do this and not have it effect their entire world view that is hypocritical, if they had no choice they then could never judge anyone for the same actions in the same way. In order to not be wrong and immoral in his own mind for the first two killings Light perceives his actions as correct and therefore he must continue to do the same thing or admit he was wrong to begin with. It is incredibly well written as it is a folly that would probably only happen with a very intelligent but also naive individual, if he were older and more mature it would not have led him down this path and if he was less intelligent it also wouldn't.

They do this for so long it basically goes from wanting to protect their sense of self to I truly believe everything I’m saying, thinking and doing

Regarding Japan's high conviction rate: one of the main reasons for that is that they only prosecute people for whom they have an overwhelming amount of evidence - only about 8% of cases are actually prosecuted.

    • @jdjack519
      @jdjack519 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Yeah. Looking at conviction rates alone is misleading. It's more like: (crime rate)x(percentage arrested)x(percentage charged)x(percentage convicted). If you have a low arrest rate and a low charge rate, a high conviction rate doesn't mean much.

    • @JohnYoo39
      @JohnYoo39 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

This is a lie. Japan is notorious for its 'hostage justice' system where the accused is denied access to legal aid, denied bail, and coerced/forced into making confessions whether real or false.
Most convictions don't make it to trial because most convictions are based on written confessions, not on the weight of the evidence. The police use the 99.9% conviction rate as a threat, telling suspects to even falsely confess to lesser crimes to avoid being taken to court on a more serious offense where they will be found guulty 99.9% of the time.
Also the conditions for appealing a decision are such that most dont get a fair hearing.
The whole thing is a charade between judges and prosecutors and law enforcement, who get to pat each other on the back for their great work in catching "criminals".

19:10 "its a bit convenient..." Actually, the fact that his father is in the police, ties in REALLY well to what we already know about Light at this point!
We know Light has a strong personal sense of justice, and has strong beliefs regarding how criminals should be treated! He is still quite young, so it only makes sense that these beliefs must have developed from SOMEWHERE close, right?
With this reveal, we understand than his father also likely had a similarly strong sense of justice, which is why he joined the police force. His influence on Light's character has played its part in developing Light into the type of personality that would be doing what he is doing.

In the manga Light actually fanagles him to helping during a later arc in the series. Look into it, it's a pretty interesting omittance from the animated series although it has no real impact on the flow of the story overall.
The most interesting thing to note about it, is that during those events it confirms that Ryuk has quite a bit more agency in the human world than you would think from watching the anime alone. In the follow up stories "The Kira A files" and "The Kira C files" (Mighta got the name wrong.) it actually comes into play which is hella interesting, and they even address it directly because they wanted to be sure that the audience understood that in fact they did NOT screw up the continuity.

"Why do people love superhero movies? It's because everyone longs for help during difficult times. Essentially, all forms of entertainment that people enjoy reflect their desires. For instance, fantasy films are successful because people find their daily lives boring. Why does Light want to become a god? Because every day, Light witnesses injustice everywhere. He desires to change the world, even if it means resorting to morally questionable methods. But ultimately, he is only human, prone to making mistakes just like all of us."

    • @zennonapieronn3734
      @zennonapieronn3734 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Not quite. Both for the first part and also in the case of Light. And I am not going to discuss the first part.
But when it comes to Light, even in the first episode, you can already see that he is a sociopath. An ordinary person might try the notebook, and find out it works, but most of us would not continue, no matter what injustice we might see, no matter how much we would like to change the world. Light is not ordinary. He is smart, top of his class, charismatic, good looking, narcisistic sociopath with god complex. And that's simply it.
You can argue that his motives are pure, that he kills criminals to bring justice to the world, that he wants the best for humanity. But once he gets drunk enough by his newfound godly power over life and death, he shows his true face. He did not hesitate a second once his ego got hit by false L, even though he is just a mysterious Kira who nobody knows, when the false L bruises his ego, he wastes not a moment to write his name down and murder someone who is on his side, fighting for justice. He was no threat to him, they knew nothing about Kira at that point, he did not kill him out of fear or neccessity. He killed him simply because he challenged him. It was not a morally questionable choice, it was not means justify the end thing at that point. It was not morally gray, it was pure evil. And that point was showcased even more just seconds after, when he declared he is justice.
This was a showcase of his true character. A boundary he step over so easily. If he can kill someone on his side of justice just on a whim, where is the line? When will he start killing innocent people who do not agree with his idea of justice?
It was obvious that police would have to investigate this. He is smart, he surely knew it would happen eventually with what he was doing. And that's exactly it - he killed fake L because he challenged him, because he did not agree with his version of justice. He killed him for the crime of disagreeing with a god of justice. And as we all know, once you cross the line, there is no going back. Which again, we can see by him trying to kill L. Someone widely known for great work of justice and detective work, a menace against injustice. Someone he should defend, not kill. But alas, he has shown that he does not agree with his methods, and that's enough for Light to want to kill him. The line is crossed. And you can't say that it was a human mistake on his part, no, it was his nature. The error was that his nature got him outsmarted. He revealed so much by doing that, simply because of his bruised ego.
The question now is, how much lower can the line go. Because he is over and above morally questionable methods. As he mentions in the video, how will he progress his crimes that deserve execution? During that first match between Light and fake L, he crossed a major line. He already executed someone for not agreeing with his methods. And that's enough for him to do it thousand upon thousands of times. And there is not much room to go even lower after that.

@@SoloKatOnly Never said he is not. He is just a sociopath with perfect blend of intelligence, cunning and charisma for the job he is aiming for. And he needs all of those traits to succeed for at least a while. But don't kid yourself, he is not doing all that just because of justice. He has shown that already. And with all of those traits that help him do the job also come deep flaws in his character. And that's absolutely human, because even someone as fit for the job as Light make mistakes. Which killing fake L absolutely was.
And no, you might think that, but if people used the note, it would be either for very selfish reason, making it very easy to track them, or they would lack the dedication of Light and could not go any further. Just three episodes in and Light is already beyond reach of what an ordinary human could do.
Yes, there is a potential to do great harm with the notebook right away that some people would go for, but that would be stupid and without any moral justification, not even close to Light. And still, that would be a very small number of people, most probably closely linked with sociopathy as well.
It is one thing to think what you would do if you had the power. It's completely different when you actually have that power and have the ability to do the deed.

Light suffers from "black and white" and "all or nothing" thinking. His thinking means he can't understand that humans, including himself aren't always perfect. To Light there is only bad guys and good guys. Bad guys do bad things so society is rotten. He ignores the good being done because if bad still exist then good simply isn't good enough. He himself has top grades, is handsome, healthy, popular, well adjusted, and loved by his family. So he's not just good he's superior.

*No spoilers:* About the timing of writing things in the book, as soon as you finish writing a valid name while thinking of that person's face, 40 seconds start counting down, and at the end of those 40 seconds, that person dies of heart attack. If you write the cause of death before those 40 seconds are up, you now have 6 min 40 sec (400 seconds) to continue writing any details of the death. After those 400 seconds pass, whatever is written will occur (if no details were specified, they will simply die of the specified cause as soon as time is up). However, since you can also specify the time of death, it is possible to specify a time of death sooner than 6 min and 40 seconds and have it happen, or up to 23 days later. It is also possible to strike out what you wrote and change it, as long as the strikeout and rewrite happens within the 400 second timeframe; however, you cannot strike out a name - there is no way to prevent death once a name is written, you can only change the circumstances of the death. And if you should ever mess up and end up writing something totally incoherent or otherwise nonsensical, the cause of death will default to heart attack after 400 seconds.

fyi seasonal anime is a fairly recent thing. Back when Death Note aired, shows just ran until they finished, either after adapting all the source material, after adapting a pre-planned amount of it, or after public interest in the show dropped to the point it was decided to end the show. You occasionally got sequel series 4-5 years later that adapted more of source material the initial show didn't fully adapt, but shows that were planned for the beginning to run over multiple seasons were not a thing.
The Death Note anime started after the manga had already finished, so they just adapted the entire thing in full from start to finish as a single show.

When I moved to Japan I discovered there was a vending machine right outside my building which stocked alcoholic drinks. I asked my Japanese friend if this meant there would be groups of teenagers hanging around at night drinking and causing trouble. She was very surprised by my question and replied, “Of course not. It says on the machine that you have to be 20 years old to buy alcohol.” [maybe 21 years old. I forget the law]
My friend was being genuine. It just didn’t occur to her that a person might break the law knowingly. If they could see the age limit printed on the vending machine then there was no chance of them breaking the law by accident of ignorance. Of course, this doesn’t mean there is no crime in Japan, but it was definitely the most common attitude by far amongst the people I knew, and I have to say that in the 9 years I lived in that building I never was aware of a single underage person using the vending machine illegally and there were no groups of youths hanging about on the street.

In general, the percentage of people being wrongfully convicted is around 5% (in average, in first world countries). Assuming Kira only goes for people that have clear evidence against them, you could lower that number to around 1-2%~. A lot of criminals would still commit crimes because they would be too stupid to be affraid of kira, there is also natural desire to defy kira, a lot of people would commit crimes to prove to themselves that they are better than god. When talking about Kira (Light Yagami) vs L, people mostly neglect the fact that L's conditions to "win" are way more difficult than Kiras. Of course finding out ones identity is already hard but thats actually all Kira needs to accomplish. For L however it isn't. L doesn't only have to find out who Kira is, but also how he kills people and has to catch him redhanded on top of this. So in all honesty, I think L has already proven to be smarter than Light is. It's only that his task if you will is way more challenging than simply finding out who he is.

The Japanese police have a stop-and-frisk policy and, while they're more polite about it than in other countries, refusing to cooperate will likely get you taken down and carted off to jail in a heartbeat. So only bullet proof cases get to the court to be judged. In US court starts as soon as the case is opened, so naturally every case gets to be judged before the person is released. This is one of the biggest fallacies I have seen many people think about. This gentleman here classifies "rape" and "robbery" as something that, despite the horrors, he can kinda get behind with Light for killing the perpetrators.
Likewise, if hypothetically, Light kills only rapists and robbers, would his 400+ kill count be justified? If the answer is no, then that should answer your queries.
Anything abstract is subjective. I'd rather have a benevolent dictator who kills truly evil people, but only after every research is done than have whatever our justice system is. Even this version of dictatorship aka Kira is better than the current justice system. But even a benevolent dictator may go bad anytime, so I can understand the dilemma there.
Bro was trying to think what could be worse than robbery and rape. I can give you multiple reasons for why robbery can be justified. Does every thief do what they do for pleasure, or is it possible that they might also have a family they have to support and stealing was the only option he found?
Physics expert you may be, whatever opinion you have might apply to you, but never try to believe that your opinion is right. Because then, you'd not be that different from Kira. Kira had an opinion, a perspective, and he tried to enforce it onto the world. Now, that's subjectively evil. Kira gets objectively evil in later episodes, but to a point, I wholeheartedly agree with him.

I think on principle it's good to not reveal suspect's identities. It prevents people from committing crimes for the notoriety, and it prevents innocent people from being slandered by baseless accusations. However, I've heard that Western Europe currently has political turmoil over the growing belief that policing and conviction is not being fairly applied. Allowing the law to operate without transparency only works if people trust the law, so I think Western Europe needs to be more transparent for a while to regain public trust and destroy stereotypes.

On the debate on showing criminals' faces and names, and centering coverage on them, I agree that it can lead to dangerous consequences and copycats seeking to achieve similar levels of infamy. I would much prefer for coverage to center on the victims, especially those who are no longer able to speak out on their own behalf, as it centers the narrative on the loss, rather than the violence. We only have to look at how certain serial killers have entered the zeitgeist with multiple recent documentaries and retellings that are centered on their perspective to understand how twisted society's fascination with crime really is. It's horrifying to me that I know the names and faces of such monsters as Bundy and Dahmer so easily and ubiquitously, but would be hard-pressed to name or recognize the faces and names of their victims.
I like what you said about stating all the facts, how it's important here and in science. If you ignore the facts that are "inconvenient " or "uncomfortable", you're denying yourself the full picture, and when you're trying to reach the truth or at least a better understanding of the world, denying yourself the ability to take everything into account is detrimental. In this case Matsuda pointing out the change in criminal habits speaks to the public awareness of the Kira situation, how people and society are changing and adapting. The word "god" doesn't even hold the same meaning for Japanese people.
It's more of a spirit, though not a spirit😅 Spirits are different.
It's so hard to explain... and probably why people decided to have god=神(kami).
Part of the reason Christianity didn't really take off in Japan, I think. We already have 8 million gods (literal translation of 八百万の神) and bunch of Buddhist characters. Why add another, special one? Kind of thing. We do weddings Shinto style, celebrate Christmas as a holy night and hold Buddhist funerals. It's just not that big of a deal.
You even hear people being praised as gods for their skill. Not godlike, mind you. Straight up a god. There's no divinity involved.

I always assumed people wanted faces and names in the media so they knew who to look out for if they’re ever released, whether that being out of a fear they have to keep themselves safe or some desire of people to enact further punishment, or others may simply want to make an arbitrary classification of the person they see.

gonna point out that the human frontal lobe isn't fully developed until age 25ish, on average. and for men, you hit puberty around age 14, which means an uptick in a bunch of hormones and changes in the body both physically and chemically, including the steady development of that region of the brain. so it makes sense that Light is very childish/immature in his responses and you're right to point out L's accuracy in that reading.

    • @storieswithstyle

Yeah, one of the reasons why math is asinine to be taught before 14 as it is also connected to abstractions. I love that the author captures that with L, really realistic writing :)

Battery is physical contact yes. Assault is physical contact or causing someone to reasonably fear it is imminent. Battery is the more serious crime. Often you'll be charged with assault if there was only the threat, or if the physical contact is not so severe, or if you cooperate and plead guilty.
You may also be charged with both assault and battery for the different elements (Double jeopardy prevents the same element). So if you say "I'm going to hit you with this hammer" and then do it, you have done both assault and battery for the threat and the hitting, but not the hitting twice.
Because assault also includes "The fear of imminent violence" and is wrapped up with physical contact, it makes it easy enough to convict people for minor physical contact. "Not only did X shove Y, but it is reasonable to fear this could have escalated, thus we have proved assault two ways.". Whether physical contact is assault or battery is largely arbitrary, but often comes down to "We know it when we see it". Charging someone for battery because they keep patting your head despite you telling them to stop would get the court to roll their eyes at the prosecutor and the jury wouldn't buy it. For assault though, they'd go for that.
Assault can also include offensive contact, which battery can't. (Knowingly feeding pork to someone whose religion forbids it, for example).

I think one mistake in your logic is assuming Light's definition of crimes will gradually grow stricter. As it stands (based on everything you've seen so far) we have no confirmation of his perspective on what crimes constitute death either before or after receiving the death note, nor are we given much if any information of the crimes and circumstances of the people he murders. Therefore we have no indication of a change occurring, so your assumption that there will be one is little more than the slippery slope fallacy.

Regarding L's conclusion "he might be trying to become a God" seems like a massive leap in logic, but "kami" in Japanese is a bit more loosely used in their vocabulary, since they have a lot of Shinto-buddhist practices that dictate that gods can live in everything and are particularly active around shrines, so in this context, the best way to contextualize L's meaning is more like "Kira might be playing at being the Grim Reaper". He's toying with peoples lives in a Judge, Jury and Executioner sense, seeing himself above the law and having a very "pure" view of good and evil, black & white, no time for nuance.

The rationale that Kira was a student was in complete logic. The same facts would also lead to people with certain shift work and especially people with part-time jobs in Japan. If Light were really smart, he would have shifted the execution schedule within that type of pattern of say a changing shift work or temporary schedule. It was a very big mistake by Light and L.

I still stand by that it makes it even more likely to conclude he is one. Why would he change the pattern exactly as they suspect it to be a studnet? Only reason is "oh shit, they are on to it". even "Haha, I made you believe that, but now I change it" is really far reaching, especially as they know hestill experiments and thus still has not found all tricks with 2whatever he is using" =D

    • @Pikachu132

@@storieswithstyle What he was doing was sowing doubts about whether he was a student that changed his pattern after the police suspected he was, or if he was pretending to be a student that changed his pattern after the police suspected he was. Both options mean that he knows what the police are talking about, though, and as L said, his main goal was to let them know that they had no secrets from him.
That's what made it so up in the air. If he deliberately changed his pattern to mock their conclusion, it's not illogical to conclude that the initial pattern was only a pattern for the purpose of making the police think there WAS a pattern.

I like this theory I found...
I have a theory of my own, if you’d like to hear it. If you look at the characters life spans you’ll notice it’s mostly made up of multiple 1-digit numbers and then a single 2-digit number. The number of numbers also differs like Light has 5 numbers in his lifespan and Misa has 6. So I think what you do is Add all the single digit numbers, multiply it by the 2-digit number, then divide by the amount of numbers in total so like this,
    ((1+5+4+2+6)*30)/6 = 90 For Misa
    ((9+3+8+9)*8)/5 = 46.5 For Light
    ((5 + 0 + 2 + 9)*20)/5 = 64 for Mello
    ((7 + 5 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2)*36)/7 = 102 for L

Should criminals faces be shown to the public? Good question. I think it really depends on a lot of factors. Very recently in the UK, there was a incident where a man stabbed and killed multiple little girls at a dance party. I think 2 adults died too. The man's identity wasn't immediately revealed because he was underage. I guess there's a law about protecting young people's privacy even if they're criminals. Well, needless to say, it caused massive rioting. People were appalled and outraged by the event (rightfully so) and then someone leaked a fake name. A name that sounded like it belonged to a Pakistani Muslim. Probably to stir up anger among racists. Mosques were attacked. Innocents Muslims were harassed and attacked and the riots got out of hand. The name and face of the actual killer was finally released. Turns out it was a Welsh lad who's parents were from somewhere in Africa, I can't remember where exactly. All the riots, and for what? I understand people in the community where it happened were angry. Little kids were killed. But attacking a whole group of people who had nothing to do with it all because a fake name was released... I haven't kept up to date it with recently so I don't know the details. I can't remember if the police released the actual guys identity because he came of age or just to stop the riots. And I don't know what happened afterwards. I don't know if this even adds anything to the debate, I just wanted to share these events with you

    • @megg734

Reverse discrimination occurs in many developed countries. Just like discrimination, it's also wrong. The riots were probably an expression of that dissatisfaction. It's the wrong way to do it, but I understand how they feel.

It absolutely adds something. If a criminal's identity is released to the public, it at the very least stops vigilante detectives from enacting "justice" on whatever innocent person they determine is guilty, which is exactly what happened at that time.

I mean, I'd only want to know for safety. If the police know what a killer on the run looks like, I want to know, too, so I'm not unknowingly having coffee with them. But if they're in prison with little to no chance of escape, I don't really need to know. Although if he also serves his sentence and is released, I have no guarantee myself that he changed either. So long as the criminal themself is not a current threat to me, there's no reason for me to know. Also, you didn't exactly miss anything, but it is explained later. Other viewers, if I did that wrong pls quickly correct me, im bad at not spoiling. That's not a spoiler, right? 22:09 as i understand that after several rewatches, you have 40 seconds after righting a name to write the cause of death. Once you write that the clock starts whether you need to pause or add anything . There's a rule that's not really important about spelling, so I assume from that it's locked in no matter what you write. What i never understood is why he never used a pencil, though. Because the death would probably still happen, but you could erase it.

Something quick I just remembered!. I was reading last week about the problems/difficulty of writing an "inteligent" character. Light is brilliantly done. The biggest problem is to make their moves "smart" but that means a lot. First the writer needs to be "smart" or understand what "intelligence" is (in base the set of skills to addapt yourself to the circunstances divided into several fields, is a primal skill humans have so well developed).
Adding to that base it's very common to see how smart characters are able to know everything or see the future or even modify a ton of random circunstances into their benefit. That's wrong.
Light seems so well written and natural because he's not just smart. He's smart and able to get almost every tool the narrative brings him to use but he fails into the emotional and lets his rage take some really bad choices plus he barely never (or at least yet) regrets nor accepts his failures. Because he's a teenager and that's what teens do.
The key to make a smart character is in the end the same to make Superman. X ammount of power requires a balanced weakness that allows the character feel real. And Light is perfect into it.
L is a little more messy if we talk about it but I would say not so much even his choices feel risky or senseless sometimes that's part of his character and weakness as the pride and unexperience is part of Light's.
