The pen community thanks you for "acting like a dumb tourist" and getting all this footage from the event! Amazing video report as always. Love that ink testing notebook with Graphilo, Takasago, and Tomoe River strips.
12 floors...... good lord. I don't think my heart would survive entering here, not ever... But it does explain how some JP instagramers can achieve such perfect color matches with their sutff! The organisation of event and idea of providing you with tools to test ink is great! You can go into the show with 0 equipment, it's so cool... And silent atmosphere is also so cool, feels like more ceremonial, in a way (does it make sense? All the ink can make one's head spin so much... I never saw such tiny Parker either, I feel like in Japan some tiny bottles of inks are easier to get! I once saw a small KWZ bottle, it was very new for me since I never saw anything but 60ml bottles... You pronounced Inkebara correctly, they are cool but their bottles are a source of a headache. They spill all over! Ah... I'm also a bit shocked over kuretake, I never heard of them doing fp ink! It's quite an easy brand to get internationally so it feels a bit hopeful! Yellow ink brings Pelikan highlighter fountain pen to my mind... And oh, all those inkbooks are a delight! Truly lovely stuff, thank you for showing it all off and giving us a glimpse!!
What a great tour of a fun ink show. I loved seeing the different way people test their inks. So many fun inks to lust after and paper that I need to try. Thank you for being a tourist for the rest of us.
My husband is watching me watching this...lol...he knows who I am watching as I am laughing saying, "I love this woman"! Thanks so much, as usual, I am glued to the screen. this is just my first watch...always have to watch these a few times at least....like a child saying tell me the story again...!!! Just doesn't get old. 😍😊
This makes me so happy! Sometimes I wonder if I walk a little bit too much on the weird side. Not saying weird is bad, but it sometimes doesn't resonate. Glad you are one of my kind of people and get it hahaha! Thanks so much!
I *love* that idea of paper striping. Ink swatches are all well and good, but the ink is going to react to different paper differently. This way, you get a 'true to life' example. Brilliant.
Hi, do you have any thoughts on Ferris wheel press inks? I get the vibe it’s only popular because of its packaging and marketing but would love to know your thoughts.
Their packaging and marketing is definitely one of their strong points. The caps to their bottles of ink is one of the weak points (they always leak). Their color selection is pretty vast and they make colors that are popular. As far as the quality of their ink--is seems good (I only have about 10 bottles). They seem to run a lot like other inks--the saturated ones are very wet and the light/chromoshading ones are a little drier. Overall, I think they are a nice addition. They are popular over here because they nail the Japanese esthetic.
So glad you enjoyed it! I tested inks at the one I went to last time, but I was so busy talking to people and filming I didn't test a single ink! (That's why my ink book was pristine hahaha!)
i clicked on this video because of the dynamic thumbnail. absolutely loved your video, subscribing now :) and thank you so much for filming what and how other people were swatching in their swatchbooks, really appreciate that part. it's always fun to see how others do their thing.

Thanks for the very enjoyable view of an Ink Show in Japan! Love how clean, tidy and quiet it was, though covering the lower walls and ink boxes suggests that some folks might not be as careful slinging ink as others. :) I also appreciate the lady with three strips of paper for testing the inks. Very ingenious! Maybe you didn't "sample" the inks, but you sure recorded (filmed) a bunch of them for ALL of us to enjoy.
Thanks so much Randy! I stayed till the end and looked around and there was just a bit of red ink on the floor near one shelf. I think people were pretty careful, but you know ink, it somehow ends up where you don't expect it hahaha!
I've heard of pen shows, but I never imagined an INK show! I know people get worked up about pens, but for me the hobby is all about the ink addiction once you've dipped your toes in. 😂 Thank you for showing off all these inks and the environment. I feel like a video of just the mild noise and a camera off in the corner would be very calming like ambient cafe noise. Of course I know that video isn't happening, but it's a thought. 🙂 I love the inks you showed off. These new light inks that are getting popularized are pretty, but I'm desperate for obnoxiously bright and saturated colors, myself. 💜
That would be an awesome video--just people quietly testing ink! I think I am an "opposites" kind of person and I love really saturated inks (in a fine nib) and really light inks (in like a Pilot Parallel). I'm kind of short on "normal" inks hahaha! Thanks--glad you enjoyed it!
Fascinatingly informative, like all your contributions here on youtube. Here especially - so many inks in one pile -> wonderful! Thank you so much for the insights we have gotten through you and your efforts. Having an ink book with different paper is a very clever way to test like that. I’m so jealous of the Japanese ink scene, I wish the US had something similar. Also, I always enjoy your guest appearances on the Tokyo Inklings podcast.
LOL - I cannot get over seeing you pour out ink into a drinks glass! Gets me every time! Thanks for this ink show - I'll add it to my dream list! (after I win the lotto!!)
I am living in the wrong country. I need to move to Japan. This was fascinating to watch. I am particularly interested in the new Parker Quink and hope this will be the start of many new inks from Parker.
Me too! I looked around on the internet and didn't really find anything like it at a cursory glance. I really hope they follow thru as it is a great way to get ink and not have a ton of it and pay higher prices!
Thanks so much! It was nice seeing this show and they ran it very well for being in such an enclosed space. You had to wear a mask (everyone still does here) and they limited the number of people, but I was about the only one talking there hahaha!
Wonderful video! So much ink! I am continually amazed by the variety of colors and manufacturers. The quietness was interesting, I think I would have found it a bit intimidating.
How lovely, full of charming details! Thank you for uploading this video and sharing with us your experience. Your video is capable of casting spells on places/events/everyday objects and reveal the admirable excellence under the modest appearance. The appreciation of daily life's beauty is uplifting.
Really liked this video and seeing all the ink bottles lined up. I cannot imagine having 12 floors of stationery to peruse! But I wouldn’t mind giving it a try! Thanks for sharing the ink show!
So interesting how the show is set up and how organized. I probably wouldn’t test an ink that I couldn’t buy, in case I fell “in love.” Glad you’re the brave one for us taking a video as an unknowing tourist! 🤫 Sounds like it wasn’t a big issue after all. I prefer the green over the yellow ink but was great full for the sample writing because I was curious how well it would show. Love the inside look you provide and the fine details. Thank you for that!
Thanks so much! There were several people that didn't buy but some ladies would test a bunch of ink, leave and think for a bit and then come back and buy one bottle. I admired their discipline!
What an amazing expereince. I wish there were something like this in the states. The footage is lovely and the little looks at other people ink notebooks is just wonderful.
Actually, for most experienced fountain pen users (even in Japan) this is a bit of a rarity! The DC Pen show used to have an ink testing table--that's the closest I can think of something like this. Thank you!
I saw a post about this a day or so ago and this video has given so much more info on the event! I'm fairly new to fountain pens and never heard of an ink show before, looks very intriguing. Thanks for sharing your experience
Thank you for another beautifully put together video. All the details, down to the ambient sound in the room (!) do so much to gift some of us (who may never get to go to one of these in person) with a true taste of being there. What a rich 13 minutes!
Thank you so very much! I really wrack my brain on trying to communicate what I'm experiencing and I think it gets kind of lost sometimes (or doesn't quite "hit" and it comes across kind of weird hahaha!)
I would be in heaven but also frantic at the idea of a time limit! Whenever I go to my pen store (a three hour drive) I basically just inhabit their ink counter for hours and look at every single color and compare to my own col-o-rings to find new ones that aren't like anything I already own lol
Thank you for this interesting look into how a show in Japan is done especially in this new world. I love the look at a of the ink books and the lady that uses the three types of paper is ingenious. I don’t feel I would be a user of the yellow inks but the may work on toned paper? This may stop them from being washed out (or competing) with the white of the paper. Once again thank you so much for taking us on this ink adventure.
Thank you so much--it is fun to share with the community! I did try the yellow ink on black and navy colored paper and they basically disappeared. I will need to try it on other paper and maybe textured paper or water color paper. I would think artists may like this ink. I'm keeping it as an ink additive to add to colors I think need more yellow.
Thank you for taking us along on this fun ink show. I wonder where the light, almost unreadable, ink trend is going. Soon we’ll need blacklight to read our own notes. That new Iroshizuku yellow/greenish ink is the same color as Mtn. Dew soft drink poured into a clear glass. I liked the set of 4 Iroshizuki inks, will be watching for them in the US. We are also impatiently awaiting the Iroshizuku cartridges.
Thank you! I saw the Iroshizuku cartridges there and had not seen them before--they look pretty cool! I'm predicting that large companies will include a light ink in their selection but I don't think they will go overboard--unless it's pink. For some reason there is a lot of pink light ink during cherry blossom season!
Thank you so much! I always underestimate how long it takes to make one and had planned on getting this out like 4 days ago hahaha! Your comment helps make it worth it!
I tested inks at the one I went to last time but was so busy filming and talking to people that I didn't test a single ink--that's why my book was pristine! But it didn't keep me from buying gobs of ink hahaha!
Thank you for a great video - as always, the visual production is great, the voice-over is always so zen and, of course, the information about inks and pens in the Japanese market is so informative. I felt like I too was also at inks, inks, Inks! Thank you.
Wow! What an awesome show! I'm up to 100+ inks in my collection, and I'm still on the lookout for more. I've got to make it a point to go out there and see the show next year. Of the inks you have currently, which would you say is the most underrated or underappreciated ink? I'm sure you've answered this question 10 billion times, but as I'm starting to fill up my ink binder, I found myself wondering which ones I felt were underrated, so I thought I'd ask. Thank you for another fantastic video, they're always a pleasure to watch. And congrats to the winner of the glass pen! It's gorgeous!
Thanks so much! Actually I've not been asked that. What I have been asked that surprises so many people is: if I could only have one ink, what would it be? (Like on a deserted island). Pilot Blue Black. It is slightly waterproof but not so much that it makes it finicky or dry. Works in most pens. Very utilitarian. It surprises people, especially coming from me.
Fantastic! Yes, that is rather surprising, but it makes sense! I can see how an ink like that could be often overlooked (I certainly did), so thank you for the answer! I think I'll pick that up next. Cheers! 🥃 Edit: I bought a 350ml bottle of the Blue Black. 🔵
Yeah, I still think it's a mistake for pilot to get rid of Tsukushi. I picked up a spare for my museum of discontinued inks 😄. Was that lady referring to 1st, 2nd, or 3rd generation Tomoe River? Because they are different.
Hahaa a lost tourist taping inside the exhibition that was funny. It was quiet as a Library but fun I hope. Hey, I hope one day you could go to United Kingdom or/and USA to video tape Birmingham and Pure Pens inks since both do not sell ink samples. Always the best quality information in the most elegant style that only you make. Please be safe and thank you for sharing 🎨
Thank you so much! I haven't been to a US pen show in years since moving to Japan but Europe pen shows are on my bucket list. I may go to the LA Pen Show next year too!
Thank you for showing what the show looked AND felt like. How were the shimmer ink sampling work with the bottles being taped down (especially Emerald Du Chivor and other J Herbin)?
Very useful and beautiful to watch. A little bitter-sweet for me because covid interrupted my annual business trips to Tokyo and Itoya was always a highlight of my very limited free time. I had a long conversation with Jeremy at Flax Pen to Paper in Los Angeles about this trend toward lighter inks. The reaction you had to the Pilot ink I have to many lighter colored inks. I like the idea of mixing them! There's so much written about the dangers of that, but with today's formulations, I'm guessing you don't worry about it too much. Would love your thoughts! Thanks again!
Thank you so much Michael! I hope you can make it out here soon again. I haven't been to the States in over 2 years! Flax Pen to Paper--I need to go there! So interested in US stationery stores--we need more of them. I don't worry at all about mixing inks. If I really like a particular color, I will mix the inks in a separate bottle, but I've straight up gangster mixed right into a bottle of ink before. I will also use that ink in an inexpensive pen at first, to make sure it's OK. But with all the glitter, iron gall, and chromoshading inks out there, I think some of that advice was to keep you in the same company's "line" of ink. Just always mix in a separate bottle and test first with a dip/glass pen and then an inexpensive pen and I don't think you can go wrong.
Thank you for the look at the ink show. Everything about it is Amazing: 12 floors of stationary, the organization to get just the right testing supplies and instructions for how they prefer you sample, the sheer number of inks...just an FYI, sometimes I watch you just to learn proper pronunciation of Japanese words/names. Thanks for another fun video.
Thanks so much! That was one of the things I was so impressed with is all the organization to get so many product out to so many people--and it's INK! Something that could be a real mess!
Thanks for the virtual tour. Its good to see such events getting organized after such difficult times. M not so much into lighter inks, need something more legible. That yellow looks like a highlighter ink. 😅
I know--it looks like highlighter ink but was very yellow instead of neon. Pretty wild, and I'm keeping it mainly for the novelty and to mix with some of my other inks. Thanks--glad you enjoyed it!
at 12:37 the dark green one with 24 next to it and the one right above it (on top of the purple.) also are these inks available in the U.S.? Nagasawa Kobe is fantastic with their smooth performance; I wonder what makes them as such..... If it means anything I thought I could rest for my search for the perfect dark green.... but the Kobe inks I got were olive-y? They looked dark green on the site but weren’t when I wrote with them.... # 15 and 34 and another one I forgot to write down the names....
The name is cut off at the bottom so I have no idea what inks they are. I believe Nagasawa inks are made by Sailor and that's probably why they are so good. I love them. One of the reasons I'm keeping the yellow ink is because so many of the dark greens are too blue for me, so I'm going to experiment with adding that yellow!
@@InkyRocks youre right about that because i was a little down when I got the iroshizuku ... Name of the new green escapes me.... it was blue-r than shin ryoku but like it none the less..... I believe theres some more nagasawa kobe dark greens I havent seen yet so ill discover those.... #15 and 34 are oilive-y and not really dark so, theres that...
Can you recommend a wide nib that delivers some of these paler ink colors with legibility? I like subtle greens, browns, yellow, etc, prefer warmer cream colored stock like Tomoe River, but some of these inks die on the sheet, and I only use them for embellishments thru an Automatic Pen, or wide Pilot.Parallel.
Since you use a Parallel, I would experiment with varying sizes of italic nibs. Also what may make a difference is if you do cursive kind of writing or more say, italic. So that may determine if you use a stub like nib or a sharper one (like a crisp italic). For my size writing, I use a 1.1 but I sharpen it a bit (slight grinding and polishing). I also choose wetter inks or use something like white lightening.
What a very nice event to go to. Was there plenty of time to sample inks you wanted in the 2.5 hours allotted? I thought the lady with the three strips of paper had such a good idea for the sampling. Thanks for sharing!
Actually, I sampled no ink at all while I was there hahaha! I was so busy filming and talking to people that the time just flew by. I just grabbed bottles I thought looked interesting! Most people had enough time but there were a few stragglers.💖
That store... I got heart palpitations just looking at the first few seconds of footage. It's just as well that I won't ever get there. I'd be lost, I'd be broke, I'd be... delirious. 😍 I _do_ need ink refills, and stationary. Letter cards. *sigh *
Could you go into more details or a review of the Kawasaki ink? The packaging is so beautiful! And from what I can gather they’re based off Japanese ghost stories??? But I’m not sure.
I haven't taken the time to really look it over. You may try to go to Kawasaki Bunguten's website and run it thru Google. I'm still recovering from making the vid (I may post a vid on the explosion in my office) and trying to use all the inks I got hahaha!
What a beautiful experience 😊 TFS what it was like. It’d be amazing to have attended. I’ve never been to a pen/ink event but hopefully something comes near me soon. EDIT: Oh and what a coincidence. My sample of Pilot Hotaru-bi ink arrived yesterday. 😍 Reminds me of the pre-pandemic perfume shows and store events I’d go to. Everyone fully immersed in their hobby, trying new releases, re-testing complex blends, enjoying the company of other enthusiasts. I miss the camaraderie. 💞
I think many people do. I miss going to pen shows outside of Japan and haven’t been home in over 2 years. Thank you for your comment-what do you think of Hotaru-bi?
@@InkyRocks Perhaps it’s time to make a trek? I haven’t been to Japan in ten years. We could be on two airships passing silently in the night? Hotaru-bi is neat. I’ve only tested it briefly with a glass dip pen and it was love, and then skepticism, and then annoyance, and then back to love. Hopefully it’s more even-keeled in a regular pen. Very smooth, I like the body of the liquid. One eye tells me it’s not difficult to read, but the other says otherwise. 🤷🏻♀️

What an amazing expereince. I wish there were something like this in the states. The footage is lovely and the little looks at other people ink notebooks is just wonderful.
Thanks so much--glad you liked it! I think occasionally the DC Pen show has an ink testing table at it.
This was interesting because I'm new to the fountain pen/ink community. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it. There wasn't supposed to be any filming so there may not be a lot out there.
Ha! Well, from the view on this side of the screen you "hit" this spot on. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Thanks again!
I would be in heaven but also frantic at the idea of a time limit! Whenever I go to my pen store (a three hour drive) I basically just inhabit their ink counter for hours and look at every single color and compare to my own col-o-rings to find new ones that aren't like anything I already own lol
hahaha! I'm the exact opposite--I make quick decisions, buy some, and then live to either enjoy or regret them! You would absolutely love this!
Great video, what an interesting event!
Thank you! It is pretty unique!
Pouring the R.O, into a wine glass in slow motion.....😍😍😍
Yes! I like watching that stuff!
I absolutely love your videos! I drop everything and watch them asap!
Thank you so much! I always underestimate how long it takes to make one and had planned on getting this out like 4 days ago hahaha! Your comment helps make it worth it!
I always enjoy your videos. Thank you for taking on your adventure. I hope to visit a Japanese Pen Show one day.
Thank you! I hope you can make it out here--you would love it!💖
How wonderful to be able to try so many inks in your ink book. My budget would have to be huge if I went to a show like that.
I tested inks at the one I went to last time but was so busy filming and talking to people that I didn't test a single ink--that's why my book was pristine! But it didn't keep me from buying gobs of ink hahaha!
Seeing dozens of ink bottles just left open was giving me real anxiety. Glad you explained the bottles were stuck down. My heart thanks you. 😅
Hahaha! But some were not (like Akkerman)
This is so lovely to watch :) Thanks for showing us how these events are.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Sounds like absolute heaven!
It was fun but I actually didn't test any ink at this one (I did two years ago). I was so busy filming and talking to people!
omg! I would so love to visit that store. I would have to bring an empty suitcase because of my obsession with stationery.
Seriously. When people come to visit, I ALWAYS tell them to bring an empty suitcase!
I saw a post about this event on the fountain pens subreddit. Thanks for this great video!
Hope you got something out of it--thanks!
Thank you for a great video - as always, the visual production is great, the voice-over is always so zen and, of course, the information about inks and pens in the Japanese market is so informative. I felt like I too was also at inks, inks, Inks! Thank you.
That's great! It's difficult to not just show bottles and bottles of ink hahaha! That would probably get old! Thanks so much!
Wow!…where to begin?…what to choose? Lol…dizzying…but it must have been so fun!
It was super fun though I didn't test a single ink hahaha! (I did at the last show but I was too busy filming and talking to people.)
Cheers! 🥃
Edit: I bought a 350ml bottle of the Blue Black. 🔵
@@SassyScentsTM hahaha! I have the big one too!
Yessssss 🤩 Thank you for the video!
Hope you enjoyed it!
What am inkredible field trip! I'd never leave! 😄
Inkredible-hahaha! Yes it was! 💕
Yeah, I still think it's a mistake for pilot to get rid of Tsukushi. I picked up a spare for my museum of discontinued inks 😄.
Was that lady referring to 1st, 2nd, or 3rd generation Tomoe River? Because they are different.
I'm not sure why they just didn't add the new inks. We didn't talk about which TR it was as I was juggling about a million things.
Interesting question.
I guess I should have elaborated--those inks had caps and you could shake them. Great question!
@@InkyRocks Thank you!
Thanks for this bringing this interesting show to your followers
Thank you so much William! Appreciate your support!
Man I wish this was a thing where I live, cause I’d loooove to try all the inks
Yes, It's a fun show. I didn't try any inks though hahaha! I was too busy filming and talking to people! But the one I went to last time, I did!
Thank you so much! "Gangster mixing" is now my new hobby! Thanks, as always, for the excellent guidance. I so love your videos!
If I'm ever able to visit Japan, your videos let me know I will need a separate small suitcase.
Hahaha! Actually you will need a BIG suitcase.
How smart is that ink book with the three strips of different paper!
I know! She was pretty interesting to talk to!
Thank you!!!!!!! This was so cool to see.
So glad you like it! I'm loving your vids on the Tok--we need a voice like yours!
@@InkyRocks You are too kind!!
Like Christmas and New Years!!!
Hahaha! Except for your wallet!
🤩Ahhhmazing!!
hahaha! It was!
Exelent like always!
Thank you so much Hector!
I‘d love to get locked in at Atoyas‘ and spend about a week there! You‘re so lucky.
Hahaha! It can get overwhelming.
I actually wait for these videos 🙂
Thank you! I should have another one out soon💞
This is heaven. My broke a** cries in longing
hahaha! Well I'm broke now...Thanks!
Wallet is always in agony and heart in longing. . .
at 12:37 the dark green one with 24 next to it and the one right above it (on top of the purple.)
also are these inks available in the U.S.?
Loved this.
Thank you so much!✨
I forgot I would love to be let lose in the Itoya store with an unlimited budget oh what fun I would have.
Wouldn't that be awesome!?
What a very nice event to go to. Was there plenty of time to sample inks you wanted in the 2.5 hours allotted? I thought the lady with the three strips of paper had such a good idea for the sampling. Thanks for sharing!
Actually, I sampled no ink at all while I was there hahaha! I was so busy filming and talking to people that the time just flew by. I just grabbed bottles I thought looked interesting! Most people had enough time but there were a few stragglers.💖
I have no willpower so I wonder how many bottles I would have walked out with. Lol. Looks like a lot of fun.
I went to the last one two years ago and it was ugly. This year I only got about 15 or so bottles...
That store... I got heart palpitations just looking at the first few seconds of footage. It's just as well that I won't ever get there. I'd be lost, I'd be broke, I'd be... delirious. 😍
I _do_ need ink refills, and stationary. Letter cards. *sigh *
I actually have to be mentally prepared to go there. It is fun but overwhelming and exhausting!
thanks
💝
Good info, thanks.
Thank you!
Beautiful
Thanks!
I doubt you'd remember but those green inks in the lady with the strips of the "top three paper type brands"...... what were they?
Was it the first picture or the second? I didn't ask her, but if it's visible, I may be able to read the name.
Reminds me of the pre-pandemic perfume shows and store events I’d go to.
Ink labo? Oh my, the founder is obsessed with le labo perfume...
Seriously? I didn't know that was a perfume--pretty fitting though!
