MINI Coopers have always looked a little different, even since BMW acquired the brand in 1994. The biggest MINI, the Countryman, debuted as a subcompact crossover for 2011, but grew into a compact with its re-design for the 2017 model year. A Plug-In Hybrid version for 2018 offers a more efficient and powerful drivetrain. Our reviewer enjoyed driving the Countryman E and its distinctive interior, but disliked that the electric’s smaller gas tank limits overall range to 270 miles despite costing more than gas versions.
The 2018 MINI Countryman Plug-In Hybrid uses a 1.5-liter turbo 3-cylinder with an 87-horsepower electric motor and 7.6-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery for a total of 221 hp and 284 lb-ft of torque. The EPA estimates 12 miles of electric range, but our reviewer found that range to vary wildly, from a high of 15 miles on a warm day with no air conditioning to a trip running both the heater and air conditioning that took half the battery’s charge in 4 miles. A lot of reviews seem to complain about the high fuel consumption when 'the car runs out of battery'. However, we don't often hear that when talking about non PHEV vehicles like the Prius. Is it because the MINI has a small battery for the size of the car or because the engine uses too much fuel to charge up the car?

I always want to know how quiet a car is in a review. Good review though. Thumbs up.

Great Review CA. I don't understand why Mini expects someone to buy this This fuel range alone is pretty annoying to say the least.

Love it. For once a car that doesn't look like you're off to Asda/Walmart unlike the Audi or BMW

I really like it and want one but I don’t see the incentive! Better for the environment… maybe? You get less range and at that price you’ll never save enough fuel to recoup your investment! Could be great if the battery capacity was about 4 times larger!

Great for folks with a short commute to work/can charge up at work. other than that...i agree it is fairly limited in its EV benefit

I think this is the right direction for powertrains, but the electric range is too low given the cost. I'm a MINI owner, but I have to say their current product lineup is disappointing and generally not compelling for the money.

Everything you dont want in a Mini, this has it. Great job BMW. I mean, all that added weight an in 8hrs, you may get 12 miles. After that, you have a 3 cylinder with extra weight of the batteries....

An A3 etron makes more sense. It has a bigger battery and a more powerful gas motor, but gets similar mileage. Like every MINI, this is overpriced and it under delivers.

Too much MOOLA $...I'd buy a decent new car for say 25k and buy a hell of a lot of gas with the 1000s I saved by not purchasing this vehicle. This hybrid would never pay for itself.

It's not a Mini. Mini production stopped in 2000. It's a fat ugly hideous piece of shit made by BMW that should be called the Maxi.

LOL -- from someone who thinks a Cortina is the ultimate. Still live with your Mum I assume.
