  • BIG MINI this week. But, bonus, we've been running the plug-in Cooper S E one for six months, so we'll tell you about that.
Check out all the long-term test updates here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/our-cars...

Thanks for the honest review. I have a 1.5 liter countryman cooper and I love it. Many reviewers say it has a pokey & sluggish engine, but you recommend it justifiably. It has plenty of zip with a turbo in spite of just 136 hp. It is a good family car and still feels light enough with 5 people and some gear. I drive it a lot in mountains and like the manual shift and sports gears.

I test drove every car in the price range, and Mini was the best by far. I'm getting a Countryman D in December. 2L

Agree more with GJ (excellent nick name M).
Had a first gen Countryman CooperSD for 5 years. Never had a car that long before. It was my 4th MINI and I truly love(d) the brand. Decided to change when the F60 was announced. The price increase in the F60 over the R60 was stunning. At least a 25% increase here in Ireland. I know, it’s a larger car with better quality materials. But seriously!
    I’m now driving a Peugeot 3008.

A load of ...! I just tested the Mini Countryman Cooper S E ALL4, immediately after a BME 225 xe and the Mini was just better on all aspects. Better seats, better view around the car, noticeably less noisy on the road. And it looks different, both outside and inside, and I like that! And I ordered one! I have tested also the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, it’s a good car to drive, no question about it, but it has less options, no own navigation system, no panoramic roof, no other color than black for the interior! If you can live with that, it’s cheaper than the Mini, but funny enough, an almost fully loaded Mini is cheaper in operational lease (690€/month Outlander Instyle, 600€/month Mini). I also tested a Kia Niro electric but the cheap plastic smells bad and gives me a sensation of vomit. Tesla 3, is too small inside, I’m 1.80m tall and my knees hit the dash if I try to stay in my normal position, so I have to stay in a kind of squatting position to avoid that. I don’t think that for this price range, you have a better option for an electric, PHEV.

I borrowed a BMW 225xe which I believe is the same car underneath, I did 260miles in 3 days charging it about every 80 miles (no motorway trips) and averaged 93.6 mpg. I don’t think I drove it that carefully. Did you put each journey into the sat nav? I know it’s a pain but the car works out where the best place to use the battery or petrol is. I was thinking the Countryman was a better looking car than the BMW but after reading some of the comments below, I guess not. The 225xe has just been updated (a giddy 5 miles extra ev range, 8speed gearbox etc) I guess this will transfer to the Mini soon enough although I agree full EV’s are the way to go, the Hyundai Kona EV will probably be a better proposition than this but we will have to wait and see.

As a company car driver If I switch from a base BMW X1 to this PHEV I'll save over £6000 in tax 3 years (SIX THOUSAND POUNDS). No wonder its on a 6 month waiting list and growing.....

I have been eyeing up the All4 PHEV Mini as a replacement for my Ford EcoSport, thinking it would do the same job and although 2 1/2 times more expensive, would last me until the all electric "AirTaxi" situation becomes a reality in sleepy Norfolk or I stop driving. However ..... after seeing this informative and quite fun review (although please stop switching between B&W, it doesn't add anything, just makes me think my pc is playing up!), I'm not so sure. Shame as I actually think it is quite a sexy little beast (just me then?)

Good, entertaining and informative review - but - please, please stop the random flicks from colour to black and white. They serve no meaningful purpose.

It is a "look who ate all the pies" mini. I believe that my 2014 50mpg Peugeot 3008 diesel hybrid can also be driven from the front wheels or rear wheels or both separately together

Me mate had one and hated it. It was white, looked like an Ice Cream Van and said it was 'exhausting' to drive. And it's nothing like a 'mini'.

Why? Do you want one? It's from H&M. You'll find it in the men's section, although the women's section will probably have something similar. Good luck. M. x

Hey Andrew. I drove it when it came out a couple of years back, but not for long so I wouldn’t like to comment on whether the economy is any better. It’ll have exactly the same issue though, of course. Sorry i can’t be any more helpful than that. Maybe an owner will see this...?

I've always envisioned the adverts for the Mini Countryman should be some way past prime mid 2000's indie dad with their trash mod cut and their 2006 sourced Topman skinny jeans just blasting Babyshambles on the way to a holiday park in Devon, while the kids are blocking it out with watching Snapchat videos of kids fighting in the park and the wife is thinking of ways to strangle him. Tagline: "MINI Countryman: At least you still think you're cool in Britannia".

That’s that one off the list. The only electric car worth buying is the Tesla. And I can’t afford it. So will stick to petrol power..

Hybrid mess, design mess, expensive mess QED ... and another thing - electric just doesn't work, it's a gimmick we will dump just like diesel and eventually move onto a refined hydrogen cell

Big fat liar claims, if you don't use it properly. Charge it, or admit that test driving a car doesn't allow the opportunity to charge it as intended. It's like an equivalent of hooning a car on a closed course and whingeing why it ain't getting the economy.
