    CSY Watercolors
    Essential: amzn.to/3LGdHkJ
    Landscape: amzn.to/3pjK7tq
    Say they're handmade-
Say they're made in Germany- have some serious doubts about that
    Their online presence is strange
    No personal website
    Etsy is currently down
    Ali Express is currently down-www.aliexpress.com/store/1101...
    Instagram has juuust enough photos
Facebook is...weird? People are commenting issues or interest, but there's no response? So either someone who isn't proficient in english, someone with some anxiety issues, or a company pretending to be a single person
Has some presence on Amazon: amzn.to/3M2Bi0o
    The Packaging:
    Small brown cardboard boxes
Inside is a clear plastic bag with a seal, a piece of cute cardstock, a silica packet, my 6 watercolors, and a w/c business card with swatch room on the back that includes color names, pigments, lightfastness, staining, and opacity. I like this a lot.
    Colors in Each Set:
    Landscape:
    Pthalocyanen Blue
    Dioxazine Purple
    Night Green
    Aremenian Gold
    Rosso Ercolano
    Sepia
    Essentials:
    Indran Yellow
    Crimson Lake
    Blue Verditer
    Permanent Orange Yellow
    Potter Pink
    French Ultramarine
Each pan is wrapped in gold foil, with an adhesive belly band incidcating the color, and an adhesive sticker on the back with the color name. Sticker can be carefully peeled off and used to mark pans
    Landscape:
Theeeeese are very slow to activate. Phthalocanen (pthalocyanine?) blue and dioxazine purple are both pretty weak and unipressive, but they may just need more time. The Sepia looks like some black may have been added to make it darker, but the pigment is listed as just PBr7. In fact, ALL of these are listed as single pigment colors.
I have never seen a pthalo blue OR a diox purple this week before.
I suspect, and suspected from the beginning, that these are mass produced and being sold as a handmade problem, hence all the weird wink wink nudge nudge at the beginning
    Essentials:
    Awful, just awful
Indian Yellow and Perm Orange Yellow are laughably weak. The Crimson Lake is also super weak and not really a crimson lake, and the Potter's Pink isn't potter's pink- it's more like an alizarin crimson
The Blue verditer is more like a pthalo blue, and the french ultramarine is fine. It's the only decent one here.
Frankly, I sorta think they're lying about the colors and the pigments they've got, because none of these look like the real deal
    Swatching on Blick:
These are absolutely awful. No redemption for these whatsoever, these are a waste of your money.
    Better alternatives-
    Available on AliExpress:
    Paul Rubens
    Superior
    Handmade Watercolors:
    Beam Paints
    Heavy on the granulation:
    Schmincke
    The Verdict:
    Absolutely not.
    Mairtini Brillian Rays Watercolors
    Adventure Set
    Purchased off AliExpress
    4piece: www.aliexpress.us/item/325680...
    12 Piece Palette: www.aliexpress.us/item/325680...
4 piece- I thought they'd secured it with clingwrap, but it was more like just a protective film to keep it from getting scratched. The 4 pans are friction fit inside (so they're removable) and the palette snaps closed via a spring in the hinge.

Thank you so much for this not being click bait. So many of these "I'm quitting Art!" "I am closing after 10 years" Worst Ever Product!" posts are click bait it drives me batshit. You earned your subscribe.

I started with Jasper Stardust. I probably spent an entire car payment for his paints. I’m not a professional artist but want to stock my art room for when I retire in maybe 6 more years. I thought they were great and still use them. However I found A. Gallo handmade watercolors from Italy. Yes they are expensive and I have probably spent a mortgage payment on them. They are amazing. They smell great and rewet so easy. I love them so much. 💜

I adore A Gallo. I had such a lovely and personal experience communicating with Alina. I like being able to trust that when she says she’s approximating a historical pigment in modern, safe materials, she really is getting as close as possible to the colour and behaviour of it. I’m glad she’s doing dot cards now so more people can sample her paints. I aspire for my handmade paints (made just for my personal use, so far) to be rich and easily rewettable, too.

Looking at the personal account linked to the business page it's an Asian lady who maybe lives in Germany? It's a lot of travel posts none of which are captioned in English or german. I couldn't find the Etsy page at all so I think either etsy took it down due to bad reviews or they left in an attempt to erase reviews. I really enjoy the metallic watercolors that were gifted to me.

Thank you for the review. I have never heard of CSY and now I know to stay clear of them. I would love to see a few watercolor kits available in your shop.

I haven't seen the swatches yet, but I did see many people complain a lot about their normal paint, and their glittery paint is ok, but I've seen someone was really excited about their wooden paint boxes.

I've been very curious about these paints, so thank you so much for saving me the trouble, lol. And hey a shout out to Beam is cool too!

I have many of the shimmer and glitter sets. (That came with a tin) and they were actually pretty good. And they did smell minty clove like. Have not tried the matte flavas tho… So glad I watched.

Btw, I'm using the Xileyw palette (the new one with 48 colors in a black metal palette), and they aren't even slightly as bad as these paints are. They are actually quite nice for sketching in my sketchbooks.

So far I am quite happy with the product but I've only used the glitter ones. I will check out the simple water color batch. I use Daniel Smith mostly but so far have enjoyed my gold and purple glitter paints. Quite nice actually.

The manufacturer name is Chinese written in pinyin. Guizhou is a city name and then the company name I guess

Oh, good, I'm glad I'm not the only one who found jazper stardust watercolors to be absolute garbage, lmao. They were so powdery and would lift off the page when touched lightly with a finger, lmao

Does that mean thier metallic set isn't handmade either? What makes a good metallic water colour?

Ercolano Red pigment is usually so easy to work with, there’s just no excuse for that. Or the others. Yikes. I can feel the blaze of your outrage right through the screen!😄 I agree, I like the watercolour business/swatch card. We should all swipe that idea...

So glad to see this! Those paints are horrible. They brush off when dry. Save your money. What are they really made of? I didn’t get tins either, annoying. I threw them out, they were so bad I wouldn’t pass them on or sell.

I'm so glad you did this review! They're far worse than I'd even expected. The false advertising (pigment, origin, how they're made) should be illegal if it isn't already.

I am german and I have never heard of this "brand" before. I also couldn't find any information about them, except their f-book page. Which doesn't really provide lots of informations and shows no signs of being german. The name you mentioned in the beginning not sounding german; well, it isn't german of course. Its clearly chinese or at least asian.
These paints also aren't available anywhere here in Germany, except Amazonia. You can however get them on pretty much every cheap chinese online marketplace that is accessible to US citizens. So no, these paints are definitely not made in Germany.

Idk. I found a long black hair in my csy watercolors. I assumed it was really homemade

I beleave if colors are broken in pan´s like these colors, they can never hold for a very long time on paper also not if you work in finest layers. my best watercolors colors have a glossy looking surface also if they are dry.
some good colors by other brands are looking matt and never broken, but if I use them they are looking also glossy on this point if they are again dry. not one of my colors are looking broken by itselfe ...
I don´t know what´s going wrong with your colors because the ingrediences.

I have a set of their metallic golds. Initially I really liked them, but have recently discovered that when dry, they flake and rub off. I expect my paints to stay on the paper. I won’t be buying them again, and certainly won’t buy the ones you reviewed.

    • @harperist

Same. I was just about to buy more colors when I found out that they rub off. All of that fine metallic dust can’t be healthy.

These are granulating water colors. This can be very desired. I don't think they are bad, they are just different. The do look weak. But that granulation is often very expensive to get.

Personally i think they may be an Indian product, which may be in a sense handmade by which there would be like a hundred workers all grinding away in slave like conditions. That's just the vibe i get especially with the inferior pigments yet apparently hand packed at least.

“These are BAD!” I wish I would have found this video video before I decided to buy ALL of the CSY watercolors I could find on Amazon because they were “handmade.” Boy, was I ticked when I tried to swatch these. What a waste of money. I have no clue what to do with them. They serve as a reminder to really read the reviews.

I recently purchased a set that wasn't metallic. They were weak. The metallic paints were much better. I was disappointed in the matte colors. Won't buy those again.

No ma'am. Handmade is expected to be superior to a mass produced product. We pay more for it and expect perfection. Throughout history handmade has ALWAYS been superior to mass produced. Just because this generation is broken doesn't mean your products should be.

How funny! I had the same thoughts and did the same stuff (researching/snooping) when I came across this "brand". It definitely comes across as an attempt to make it all seem like its legit handmade. Really not cool at all. I'm so glad you did this review and will save people some time and money! 🖤
