That last theme was also what I did my termagants in as well, however I'm new and got the ultimate starter set and I'm not sure to paint the bigger mini's like the Psychophage. Maybe there's a suggestion on what colors to use on the weird looking vents on it's belly?
I think the 3rd one before the Black Templar but with the Screamer Pink is my favourite. I like the first but I’m a bit sick of red as a Khorne Daemon player.
Same as Chef for me - I'm going to skip the dulling down step with black templar - I think it looks really cool I'm calling my Hive Fleet - FOMO - seeing as the box release was surrounded by fear of missing out ;)
100% agree. I paint blood angels and want something other than red with my tyranids. Like the first a lot but am leaning towards that last one. What ever one i choose that ratling grime will feature. Never knew how good that colour was.
Loved the last color scheme! Like you, I don’t think the final Black Templar layer is necessary as the model looked fantastic before that. This is the color scheme I’ll be using. LOVE your videos. Keep up the great work! 😊
Aw that's so kind to hear, thanks so much! Definitely skip any steps you feel you don't need, glad you like the scheme enough to use! make sure you tag me if you post them anywhere!
Thanks Andy, this channel is really helping me get back into the hobby after a hiatus for children. It's been a while since I have been able to batch paint 20 miniatures ! I followed your purple scheme, and while it's not as good as yours, I'm pretty happy with it.
Liked them all, but the winner for me is the third one. It reminded me of old artwork so i guess the nostalgia kicked in :) Loved the video and seeing how you paint those gaunts.
3rd is my favorite. I love greys and various bright colours that go with all the awesome shades of greay. So im always partial to those types of schemes. But theyre all well done. 3rd for sure bc you can use bright green for venom or goo or whatever and that always looks cool on the nids
Have come back to this over and over now that Hive Fleet Typhon has been fully revealed. Making small tweaks to your scheme by adding the Volupus pink to the back of the head too but generally this has been so helpful
Loooove that first scheme. Beautifully done! I hope you do some more schemes, I would love to see kraken. That was my original army colour but I sold them years ago, tempted to go back to them as Kraken for 10th but that first scheme is amazing.
Great job. Always like a scheme when it's quick and easy to apply yet leaves a great result. Perfect when painting hordes Now just the hard choice of which scheme to choose. All 3 look great but I agree with you on not adding the black templar on last scheme, looked better without
I tried to replicate on bigger nids and it didn't come out to great for me😢. It was the contrast paint on the bigger armour plates and big patches of skin like tails ect, it's the contrast paint, for me it just looks awful on larger areas and I can never get a good finish like on your perfect examples
@@MediocreHobbiesit’s deserved, man. Easy to do and easy to replicate, even on the bigger minis, far more than the way the guy who’s doing an entire army of Typhon does his, and importantly, it looks great.
Order of preference for me is the order they were painted, 1,2 and 3. They looked great and quick to paint too which will be a bonus if buying the Leviathan box set.
This is awesome, thank you! i was nearly giving up on my Nids, because it was not realy fun painting them. But you showed me some easy and fast way to put out some very cool Aliens!
There are a lot of good color schemes for. Having a real hard time choosing which one to paint mine as. As for my favorite either the 1st scheme or the third scheme.
The last one is most similar to my own small force, Hive Fleet Gargamel: purple skin with a pink highlight, shiny black carapace with blue-green edges/striations, and some bright yellow markings on the carapace (sorta like a poison arrow frog) to make them pop...
Very nice examples! I've never used contrast paints before because I'm a bit too old school, but I'm definitely ready to give it a go now because these results are really nice (and quick!). One last thing, Tyranids are not the bad guys!
Those schemes are all fantastic, yet so simple! I'd go red but I have a firstborn Blood Angels army... I'd go purple but my Primaris custom chapter is purple... so maybe the last one!
Of the previewed ones, the bottom one with purple carapace and dark chitin. But I think I'd go with darker purple carapace, and blue tone for the skin over purple. And for nr 3, agreed not sold on swapping carapace-chitinskin colours between creature & gun. That might work better for big models, maaaybe. Of the ones you did, the first one has an amazing deep red tone for the skin. Just for that, it's my favorite. I think it would look very menacing. It's also close to Behemoth if you adjust the carapace; the red tone would be fantastic for Behemoth imo. And you can still add details, like a cyan-blue tongue, or a light-green tongue, and the openings on the legs & arms etc, if one wants to. Very quickly yet well done! As for army paint schemes, I'm thinking a yellow-green skin has potential. Then I don't know about the carapace; copper-y, dark green, a deep purple... I think tyranids are an army where one can get away with not using any of the 'primary' colors nor black/white.
I like the new red one :) Though if I ever did an army of my own I would probably copy a scheme I saw in a battle report from Games Night, part of the Yogscast, about 2 years ago. Underside is a nice dirty red brown while the carapace is a dirty yellow green. Pretty nice contrasting colors that looked great together.
I love these tutorials! Wonder if you could do the same but for the new Kraken scheme as well? My personal fave but your contrast tutorials are by far the best I've seen!
Fantastic channel. With the red one and the last one im curious to see how a larger unit would be painted, like a screamer killer and especially what colour to do the brain on the neurotyrant.
I'll be showing how I do the brain on my own neurotyrant but it's really up to you. There's not much difference when you increase the size of the model, it actually makes it easier to paint!
Just ordered the relevant paints for the last model. Just in time for the new box set. Thanks for this. I'm fair sick of edge highlighting and to be honest this has big potential to look better than my slowly painted marine army... And much quicker.
My new nid army will have one of these three schemes, not decided which one yet but it will be one of these, they look amazing, ill be using Speed Paint 2.0 as the wife just got me the new set along with the cidadel shades, can't wait to get started, just need to build up this patrol box!
Just wanted to say, I love your simple content. I appreciate that you don't over explain everything. I also like that you don't talk like an ork or add goofy skits thinking we need extra entertainment to stay interested in your videos. Aw thanks man, really good to hear to that! Haha I put out too many many videos to have time for skits but I don wonder if it would make a difference sometimes :D Glad to hear the simple content is appreciated!
Im going to go mental 90s rave with mine. Shift paints, UV paints, tesseract glow all over everything, and the occasional classy attempt at 2nd ed schemes
I like the third one -- in black. I am painting a Nid army in swamp colours of green and beige ... not fully satisfied with it. Reconsidering life choices. Great video.
Hm I havent painted tyranids for many many years, but those I have are actually in the first scheme funny to see it being adapted into something official and with the contrast paint I might actually be tempted to paint some of these again. Love the others and the video!
I had been looking for a scheme to do for a new 10th edition Tyranid swarm (having done Kraken and way back when the mental technicolour 2nd edition colours). The middle one of these, grey skin and creepy purple shell, has sold me. Just need to think about the basing scheme to accompany them…
I really like the first and third paint schemes. I think I'd combine the carapace color from the first one with everything else from the thirds one, substituting the Drakenhof shade with Berserker Bloodhsade. I'll have to try it out otherwise I might just copy the third paint scheme for my new tyranids.
All good stuff, I am actually very interested in the Kraken scheme, I have Kraken myself but they definitely did some changes to the way its painted and I like it... if you ever throw a new Kraken scheme video I would be interested
Love the different shemes, especially the first one. @MediocreHobbies which color would you suggest using for adding highlights to the skin? Maybe Mephisto Red?
All three of these are gorgeous, been practicing my scheme in preparation, but you're definitely right that the small critters don't have good detail, it's made it very hard to guage how the color scheme would look on the larger creatures.
I think i will do the last one but with the red carapace from the first one. I think this would give the last mini a bit more contrast and interest. Looks awesome. Hope to see a lot of Nidstuff from you :)
Would you mind doing a few zerg color schemes from star craft for me? I really don't see much on yourube like it honestly and I'm conflicted on how to get that zerg color from like the cinematics of starcraft 1
I hope one of the new hive fleets are for fighting necrons since that would give more reasons for my 2 favorite factions to have more fights, my favorite scheme is the second one
that third scheme is actually really similar to one of the test schemes im trying out for my nids, though i am also interested in using GSW's borealis green colorshift paint to make the chitin iridescent
Random ass Question here as I was inspired by the nids. what would be a set of colours to use if wanted to paint Red skin Orks like a “Draenor Orc” from Warcraft ?
Thanks for the tips, i realy love the red one ! I have a question, do you dilute the contrast paint ? I try to do same thing but the ratling grime don't look the same as you ?
There are three new hive fleets? Oh my that's bad news for the Imperium. I liked 1, 3 and 2 in that order. I might try the third paint scheme since I already have a Khorne army and am really wanting to get the World Eaters.
Second and third one are my favorites (even just stopping after the basic Contrast paints or with just the drybrushing follow up), but the first looks almost the easiest to paint for a "horde" army like the Tyranids. I'll stick with my own Contrast based Tiamat Fleet scheme, though, can't let the previous models done for KT go to waste.
The last theme is absolutely fantastic, great tutorial and easy to follow along.

Love the red scheme, how would you develop it further for higher value models? Hive Tyrant, Screamer Killer for example
I’m very tempted to try it on a bigger model. Keep checking back.
I love all 3 schemes. What colour did you use on the hooves/claws on the 2nd scheme?
Emmm honestly can’t remember. Just grabbed what was close. Sorry.
