Duncan Rhodes manages to explain and demonstrate three separate painting philosophies many different painting techniques in a 24 minute stream. I shouldn't be surprised at this point, but I still am. Well done, sir!
The dip method really shines when you show it off. I love the idea of starting out with such bright colors like you've done here.
Great video, I wish one thing, that the 3 figures would have been shown finished together as a comparison.
Appreciate you making this video explicitly for me, Dunc. Thanks bud your a mensch.
Any time!
Funny thing: while Nids are an army where you wanna be able to paint things fast due to how many models you'll be painting, I won my first painting competition by going completely ham on one. Was a Hormagaunt that I painted in the style of Behemoth, going a little old fashioned with a very vibrant version of the model.
Now, the dip wash model is awesome for how fast it is. You can easily set up a kind of assembly line and bang out 10, 20, maybe even 30 dudes at a time like this.
Duncan remains king 👑
Ahhh you’re too kind
Is it weird I just enjoy listening to his voice while I hobby? So soothing
Thanks for another great video, Duncan & team!
Our pleasure!
I’ve just gotten into Warhammer and I bought a few tyranids because they’re super cute! Thanks for the super informative video!
Glad I could help!
Just might have to buy a small box of Tyranids just to try out these methods, also to help my painting techniques. Thanks for the video Duncan.../Cheers!
Have fun!
I was literally just debating adding some Tyranids to my collection but was worried about hours spent painting all the little details on these guys. Thanks Dunc!
I’m a long time Tyranids player. Contrast was a massive win for mass painting hordes, and it’s what I would recommend. It’s worth using the GW sprays as your base over a cheaper product. They hold detail well and something about the surface they give works better with something like contrast that needs to be able to flow.
@@Queldonus Thanks for the advice. Do you add anything to the basecoat spray like a drybrush before adding contrast (something like slapchop) or just allow the contrast to do their job? I've rarely used contrast myself so I'm wondering about what works best. I don't mind spending a little longer on models so long as it's not hours of edge highlighting :)
If you ever consider doing this for a future video, I'd definitely like to see a conversion of a Chaos-corrupted AT-ST, I'd be curious to see what direction you could take with that "what-if" concept as a model
Thats not a bad idea! 🤔
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Thank you for the consideration!
Another amazing video!! Much appreciated as I bought the ultimate starter set a few weeks ago and need to get started painting on them. Your videos are amazing and I have watched this one a few times already.
Have fun!
I would have liked to see all three models in one picture to see the difference. Great video nevertheless.
Once thing I will say about contrast paints which I've recently fallen in love with, is that if you paint with them, try to paint one part at a time, one armour panel, one part of carapace etc. I also try not to remove my brush from the model; if you start going in and out, like Duncan said, you can tear what's already happpened, or make one section far darker or streaky which messes with the overall look.
I also don't add water to my contrast paints and I know that sounds like heresy, but most of the time I feel it's not needed.
Finally, when using contrast paints, please ensure there isn't a "blob" at the end of your brush as unlike a wash, it's nigh on impossible (at least in my opinion) to adequately distribute after it's on there, so grab some paper, do some strokes up and down with the paint on there and move to the left or right and you'll see what happens to the paint, too little will be streaky and nasty and too much will usually lead to the paint looking vastly different from where you started to where you ended.
Warhipster did a fantastic video on how to use contrast paints and he's a bit of a wizard with them to the point that I use them religiously; with thanks to people like him and Duncan, I've learned so much in such a small timeframe and painted literal 100s of models this year alone, whilst last year I painted maybe 8.
Thank you Duncan for your great videos, but also you've damned me into buying even more stuff now because I don't feel bad about leaving many minis unpainted.
What this video has done to me is make me really crave that leviathan purple because i think it looks incredible.
It’s a nice colour for sure 😊
Great video Duncan, really inspired me to paint my remaining termagants!
Go for it!
So many tricks for a beginner painter like me aswell 😀 Thank you, Duncan!
If you are painting and army get an airbrush and then spray the varnish through it. Use AK or AMMO Mig ultra matte varnish, it will look amazing and not take long. An air brush will save you so much money on primer spray cans too.
FINALLY. Been waiting for tyranids
That Magi purple really looked shocked to seen Duncan 😂
Awesome video!!!!!! There is a way that looks better, takes lass paint and is faster than those 3. Only problema, you need and airbrush (even a bbad one)
Dip, wow there's a blast from the past!
What matte varnish did you use? Awesome vid
You're my Bob Ross of miniature painting.
Looking forward seeing this in a bat rep. This sounds interesting and not meta cookie cutter (not saying your other list ideas are!).
loved this vid.. going to have to check out more of your stuff
Wow, the dip method actually came out really nice once the gloss was taken away.
Looks great. Id love to see you upgrade a larger joytoy termagant
New Era For Painting miniature
Amazing video, as usual. Great close up photography to see actual applications. Your attention to detail is fantastic. Curious, why the switch from Artis Opus brushes?
Timely content. I have a Tyranid army to paint and I was wondering how I could use speed/contrast paint to get them painted quickly.
I tried speed painting some Behemoth Termagants a while back with drybrushing, but the red bodies didn't look vibrant enough. I'd avoided drybrushing with orange because I thought that'd be too much, but maybe I should have.
Ummmm not sure what way to go but really appreciate it very much 😁😊.. love it 😊
I am finishing assembling my Tyranid part from the Leviathan box, and Dunc appear from the warp with Tyranid video. Coincidence? I think not.
Dip… 😮 “Remember me Eddy!? When I killed your brother?! I talked JUST LIKE THISSSSS!”
Judge Doom was a cultist 🤣
pls make neferata, snatchaboss on sludgeraker beast and glottkin tutorial for the painting academy only !!! ❤❤❤
Thank you! 🖌️
You're welcome!
Thank you , DRPA .
🐺Loupis Canis .
great tutorial
got any tutorials for mandrakes or druhkair minis?
Oh man, hes dipping. I feel like its 2006 all over again.
Dip looks great but im curious.
Other than the action, whats the difference between dipping and just shading, i.e. why not just broadly paint a shade like Agrax Earthshade over the whole model instead of dipping it? Itll be done faster than 24 hours.
Im having trouble understanding the perks of dipping vs just shading.
Good question, but it's the finish it gives. It's an old technique, in fact, some folk back in the old, old days would dip their minis in a wood varnish! Which is something this Dip is similar too (We think lol)
Aside from the finish as mentioned the dip does two other things. First it's a really strong protective layer, they'll take a lot more handling and beating before showing wear and tear. The second benefit it combines the benefits of an oil and acrylic wash. It's sits into the creases and depressions better than a normal wash and has the density to retain a smooth finish when a acrylic wash can be a bit spotty, while also being thick enough to stain everything more evenly than a oil wash would get you without having to put it on thick and wipe off the excess.
Dang filthy xenos bugz!! #HEAVYFLAMERBAIT

Is there a quick way to do hive fleet behemoth in the style of 3rd edition cover art? I'd bet on dry brushing being the best way to do it but I need to give it a go.
What's the difference between contrast and the wash? Aren't they both just thin paint that pools in recesses? Can i use them interchangeably?
Just built my first box of gaunts since 3rd edition and I'm very nervous to put paint to mini
My 5K primed pile of shame thanks you.
Shout out to anyone here who bought models to make a 2E Hivefleet Kill Team, only to see them disappear for 3E. Paint them and use them, forget GW!
Does the dipping technique work with other armies and paints, Thank you
Here within an hour!!!!!!!!!
First! thank you Duncan!
Yay! Thank you
Speed paint techniques implies the existence of slow paints techniques. But what importance is getting it done now matter what the techniques or the speed
So all these work on Hive Fleet Hadley's Hope or Hive Fleet Klendathu then?
HH require glazing, iirc, so no. The technique is a bit more advanced in order to go from black to blue. Good for Kill Teams, not for full armies!
What do you call a domineering pill bug?
A controly-poly.
Do these methods work for big bugs too or just the little guys?
This is how i found out Tyranids have gun eyes
Duncan help me. I need to find a Good tutorial for the Genestealers from Space Hulk game. Those colours are so confusing.
I have been painting gants for 3 days straight
I would love to collect Tyranids. Would you paint them for me? I'm sure you get this question all the time.. I've just never seen the reply.. 😔
Is it just me and wave 2 paints arent very accessible right now or am i looking in the wrong place
@DuncanRhodesDRPA Duncan, you're getting LAZY! ;)
why don't you repeat that with the colour YELLOW
I can still remember that over 15 years ago I needed AT LEAST 6 different layers for a clean yellow paint job with shades and effects!!!
I'm very interested in how it works these days with these three different types of painting
AND.....! wich Quickshde was used? the DARK , STRONG or the LIGHT Shade, each of them has a different effect
Lol...It was the Strong Shade
We need a Space Wolves version 😂
