Hi, Matt. Just want to say that your videos have been an excellent help teaching me the techniques of mini-painting after a 10 year break, you're very good at breaking things down. My nids are pretty different to yours but the skin recipe you use is one of the best for a fast and effective pale skin
Superb video again! I like how you explain exactly what it is and why it is you do it when painting and modelling. For example I had no Idea about sprue glue and that you could even fill those gaps in! I have an unpainted psychophage with a huge gap running up the middle which does not look good, now I can fix it! Thanks again matty!
I just got started with painting 40k and miniatures in general. I have only painted 1 starter kit (3 termagants and 1 ripper swarm) and 1 box of homragaunts. I bought a lictor and a tyrannofex. Can't wait to get half as good as you. Amazing looking Norn Emissary!
I’m a beginner painting my kraken fleet. And was doing base, shade then highlight. But honestly I think your method looks so much cooler. Definitely going to attempt this on one of my unpainted models. Keep up the amazing work!
Absolutely beautiful! I've never played Warhammer 40k, only Total war Warhammer games, i'm about to buy my first figurine and i'm in love with Tyranids i don't know why.
Nice job on a really big model. That is one heck of a centerpiece. Got to say though, I'm a little fatigued of Tyranids at this point. Hope to see some more model diversity in the future. Thanks Mr. Matt. Take care.
Thanks for watching! And I totally agree; i'm getting fatigued of painting them! I have some good stuff on the chopping block coming up next. A space marine, some seraphon, and I want to get my hands on some of those new trolls for aos whenever they come out...
Hi Matt amazing vid , going to try and replicate it tomorrow on a harpy just wish I could get the paint consistency right for the lines thanks again 👍🏻
Thanks and good luck! Feel free to join the channel Discord and share your results / ask any questions (server link is in the About section on my main channel page)
I really enjoy your videos and they’ve been a huge help! A suggestion for a future video would be to see how to set up your palette for a painting session. Do you use a wet palette?
That's a great suggestion! I use a wet palette for most things. For contrast paint and washes I use a plastic palette that has wells in it. I'll try to include some more footage of my palettes in upcoming videos. Thanks!
hey, I am relatively new to these painting technics and I don't fully understand your mixing. For example, what 1:1 and 3:1 mean ? are we talking about the quantity of each colors ? and how do you mix them too ? you put a bit of water in your two colors and then mix them ? thank you !
Hello and thanks for watching! Those numbers mean the quantity/ratio of each color. So 3:1 means 3 parts of the first color and 1 part of the second color. You could measure it by brushfuls (or drops, if you transferred your paint to a dropper bottle). I mix the paints with an old brush in a plastic well palette. I don't add any water to the mix unless its specified in the video. I have tried to include footage of mixing the colors in my newer videos. Give those a watch if you can and hopefully it will help out. Good luck!
Honestly love your tutorials, you make things feel not so daunting! Quick question, if I wanted to make a carapace with a Black/Blue tint Contrast effect similar to your Kraken carapace, what paints would you use? Thanks!
Thanks for watching! I think a mix of Ultramarines Blue and a small amount of Black Templar would make a good basecoat. Then highlight with the lighter blues of your choice, depending on what kind of shade you're after. Russ Grey highlights would give you a blue-grey effect. Or you could go a more vibrant route with something like Caledor Sky. Good luck! (I have an ice themed tyranid tutorial on the way; the scales are blue but much lighter than the Kraken example. Maybe it will be helpful to you. Stay tuned!)
@@MattsHobbyHour Thank you for getting back to me, I'm trying to reverse engineer a colour scheme I fell in love with a while ago. It's proving to be an expensive endeavour!
This took me about two days. I think I could have had it finished in one but filming adds a lot of time to the process. I used sizes 1 and 0 sable brushes for most of the detail work. Series 99 from Rosemary and Co. Thanks for watching!
Hi! I've been using a modified version of this scheme for a few months now and was wondering, why not paint the carapace first? you can't really correct mistakes once you've contrasted the skin and carefully painting out the edges of red to avoid it takes me ages
thanks for watching the videos! You could absolutely change the order you paint things, if you prefer. I weighed a few options before deciding on the order of things, and there are downsides to both ways. On the troops I prefer drybrushing highlights on the skin, which saves a lot of time, and I couldn't do that if the scales were already painted. You're right though, there is always a chance to splash some red on the skin when painting the carapace, and touching it up with Bonewhite can be time consuming. I chose to paint the skin first because I think the amount of time saved by drybrushing (and being a little sloppy with the Skeleton Horde layer) makes up for any time "lost" by having to carefully paint the scales after. But if you work more efficiently the other way around, then I'd say go for it! Hope this explains my thought process! If you have any thoughts or improvements to the scheme I'm always open to hearing them. Feel free to reach out on Discord or Instagram. Good luck!
Great tutorial. I will paint my tyranids like this the next days. looking forward to the first prototype in this scheme. Just wondering, why no spot pattern on the arms, like kraken?
Thanks for watching! I didn't include the spot pattern for a couple reasons: I didn't want the tutorial to become too complicated, and also I don't really like the look of the spot pattern. But that's cool if you like it! Nothing stopping you from adding some freehand. Feel free to share your results on Instagram or Discord, I'd love to see them. Good luck and happy painting!
I bet you could, but I'm not sure what ratio you would need. I would recommend mixing a small amount on your palette and test it out first. If it looks good, go for it! Good luck!
@@Zillawill do you mean physically carve the claws to make them sharper? Or are you asking how to make the lines/brush marks look sharper? If it's the former, I would use files during the assembly stage. For the latter, it's all about having a steady hand and a really fine brush. Not much else to it! Good luck!
Awesome job on the tutorials, I love your painting style. One suggestion - that guitar track in the background is way too repetitive, it gets irritating and entrancing at the same time somehow. I would suggest trying something different to replace it.
thanks for your suggestion! I agree about the music. Part of me wants no music at all, but I guess there needs to be something. Ideally i'd like to have it quiet and unobtrusive. I will have to look at other free use tracks and mix it up a bit.
This is easily one of the best tutorials I’ve ever watched! Finished model looks spectacular!!
Thank you so much!
Lovely work these big models are intimidating but tutorials like this make it seem more accessible
thanks! Glad it is helpful!
honestly, your tutorials just get better! keep it up!
Thank you! I'll keep em coming
Brilliant scheme! I just finished mine. Thank you for very careful and clear tutorial. I will surely use your scheme for my whole nids army.
Awesome! I bet it turned out great. Thanks for watching and good luck with the rest of your army!
I would love to see you do a Tyrannofex or something with a big gun.
Gorgeous
Thanks!
I gave mine a special paint scheme. They have black skin and dark purple plates with golden spots. I call them "Hive Fleet Firefly."
Great idea! I bet it looks awesome
Pls post result
Love the little hightlights. Really makes things pop.
Thanks!
love that carapace color even before the highlights nice job
thanks! It's a useful mix that's for sure. Great for other things too!
This is unreal! Thank you for doing this. Been struggling with a scheme for my army for a while. Going into each step in detail is super helpful!
Thanks for watching! I'm glad it's helpful. Good luck!
Menacing... it's perfect. Love the eyeglow too, super easy to follow your guides.
Happy to hear that! Thank you for watching!

Will have to add it to my wish list! Hopefully I'll get around to it soon.
