Hatching Corydoras Eggs + New RARE Fish

  • In this video we follow up on a new method of hatching Corydoras eggs that I spoke about in my previous TH-cam video. We then check out the results to see how well it worked. I also share a new species of Corydoras that has been added to my fish room.
    If you are working with some of the entry level Corydoras like the C. Paleatus, Bronze Cory, Green Cory, etc, you will likely have decent success using ANY of the hatching methods mentioned in this video. I am working with a few Corydoras species that can be more sensitive, and needed to experiment to find a method that yielded better hatching results. I also keep a couple easier species like the Orange Venezuelan Corydoras. These still hatch at high rates, without issue, inside the Marina style fry box. Even with all this said, something has been different this year. Thanks for watching!

    If you are working with some of the entry level Corydoras like the C. Paleatus, Bronze Cory, Green Cory, etc, you will likely have decent success using ANY of the hatching methods mentioned in this video. Those methods have worked well for me in the past. However, something is different this year and yields have been terrible. Because I am working with a few Corydoras species that can be more sensitive, I needed to experiment and find a method that had better hatching results. So far it’s working well. Do I recommend you try this method? NO! Unless you are also struggling with hatch rates. Thanks for watching!

      I have 6 albino Cory's & they have been having eggs everywhere
      I would like to try & see if I could hatch the NEW 1's they just had
      I have a small shoe size tote & a jar like you just showed, I also
      have a 10 gal tank I have had running for 2-3 wks now with a small
      canister filter on it, so I'm wondering which would be the best to use
      & does it have to have a heater in what I put them in to survive & hatch ?

    Glad to see you're having success. I used to use the breeder boxes with an additional airstone to hatch pleco eggs whenever a clutch would get kicked out of cave. With the airstone hovering over the egg clutch. I think next time I am gonna try hooking some little 60gph powerheads to the intake for better flow.

    The orange lasers I purchase from you just spawned another batch of eggs. I am going to be away on vacation for two weeks so I left the eggs in the tanks. I have 30 or so fish that hatched and grew in the very well planted 40 gal breeder so hopefully some of those eggs will hatch, survive and grow(only ancistrus and laser cories in the tank). Just discovered Kens fish and fortunately they are only 30 minutes away.

    Hey Tom as always the fish room looks great! A few years back I saw some of these Corydoras Schultzei Black at a LFS, not in a display tank, but tucked away in a corner and at the time they wouldn't sell them. I was a little miffed... why have them out if you are not going to sell them? I got over it 🙃 and got some orange lasers for my daughter's tank. Thanks

    • @TMAquatics
      @TMAquatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just be careful and reduce the flow so the eggs are just being slightly rolled or pushed up the side of the tumbler a bit. Reduce even further as they hatch. The fry cannot handle being bounced around. They can also exhaust themselves quickly if they have to swim against a flow.

    Hello, I have been having problems with breeding adolfoi Corys for about a year now. There has been a 9/10 month 0 breeding activity period and now I’m having 15 to 25 eggs per week but I only have less than 10% hatch rate. Then after they hatch they go through the egg sack stage and after they eat on the third day and the morning of the fourth day they die. I have bred Corys before (the more common types) and I have been using the same method for all of them and I had way better results. Can anybody please help?

    I wasn’t having any luck with methylene blue. I cut up a Catappa leaf and put the pieces, some moss, and a few cherry shrimp in my Ziss tumbler. I’m very new to breeding Corydoras, but I would say I got at least 50% to hatch. The shrimp help me gauge the amount of air to run in the tumbler. My Corydoras Schultzei are fat and HUGE, but I haven’t seen any eggs.

    Whenever I use a hang on breeder box either for eggs or raising fry (granted Ive been raising L066, Rineloricaria eigenmanni and Duringlanis perugiae not Corydoras) I take off the air line and the base of the lift tube and attach a small powerheard Instead. It solves the flow problem, the only issue can be the flow being too strong (but there are a few solutions to this)
    Additionally, you can run multiple fry boxes off of one power head using a bit of flexi tubing, a splitter and valves.
    You do need to be more diligent with cleaning the outlet of the fry box itself though due to the increased flow actually circulating the water much better. But that is also down to how fine a grate you use on the outlet based on how small the fry are. But if you forget to clean it and it clogs the box can overflow releasing the fry into the tank.
    I think eventually I'd like to make a custom fry box of some kind with a larger outlet area to reduce the clogging/overflow risk

    • @TMAquatics
      @TMAquatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never thought of using a power head, but I can see how this could work. Thanks for sharing the idea.

    As soon as I heard "egg tumblers" and Corydoras in the same sentence I face-palmed and moved on. WHY do people think they can improve on tried-and-true known to be successful techniques with stupid, unnecessary and expensive gadgets??? Any floating or hang on breeder box (even Tupperware) an air stone and 2ppm Methylene blue and your results will be spectacular. 5% is abysmal!! First food? Infusoria sucked out of a well-seasoned sponge filter, then brine shrimp napoli (before first napoli molt). NO COST, and 90% or better success. Any other way is stupid and wrong and will give inferior results. Period. STOP re-inventing the wheel for God's sake!!!!
